New London-Spicer junior Avery Rich (4) and the Wildcats react after scoring a point during a non-conference match against Willmar Tuesday at New London.

NLS hopes more experience means more wins Wildcats return four starters, led by Ellary Peterson BY MICHAEL LYNE West Central Tribune

NEW LONDON — A year removed from a 2-5 record in the Wright County West Conference and a 17-13 overall, the Wildcats have four returning starters under head coach Tina Peterson in ‘22. Leading the four starters is Ellary Peterson. The senior was an allconference honor mention. A 5-9 middle hitter, she led New London-Spicer in almost all statistical categories in ‘21, achieving a team-high 190 kills (.229 hitting percentage) and 85 total blocks. She missed just five serves for a serve percentage of 98%, adding 205 digs.

“Last year Ellary took a huge step up,” Tina said. “She keeps the team together. She knows the game and recognizes the things going on — on the court. … She’s just an all-around great leader, both on and off the court.” Outside hitter Avery Rich joins Ellary to make it a pair of senior starting returnees. She held a team-high 316 digs in ‘21 and will be a key leader in the Wildcats’ back row in ‘22. A key loss in New London-Spicer’s starting lineup is setter Nyla Johnson. Johnson was a member of the 2021 AllWright County Conference team.

Falcons look for a bounce-back year After a tough go in the Central Minnesota Conference in 2021, expectations are higher for ACGC BY MICHAEL LYNE West Central Tribune

GROVE CITY — After finishing with a 2-17 overall record and 0-7 record in the Central Minnesota Conference in ‘21, co-head coaches Shawna Roemeling and Jamie Mootz and company will look to have a bounce-back year as many of their players from last season are back. “We definitely want to be more competitive than what we have been in the past,” Roemeling said. “With as many returning players as we have, we’re really hoping that that can make us shine more this season.” Senior outside hitter Hailey Wilner highlights the group of returnees. She acts as an allaround player for the Falcons and is someone to keep a close eye on. Her passing is “some of the best” that ACGC has seen,

Roemeling said. A key component to the Falcons’ lineup that is back in ‘22 is junior setter Alayna Schultz. She is a “hard-to-read” setter who will serve as a leader and provide much of ACGC’s communication on the court, Roemeling said. Commanding the middle of the court for ACGC will be middle hitters Elli Roemeling, a junior, and Ruby Klinger, a ninth-grader. Elli, alongside Schultz, will take on much of the leadership and communication pieces for the Falcons. As for Klinger, she saw some varsity playing time in ‘21, but will be a starter this season. ACGC’s senior class is made up of four players, including libero Claire Slinden and defensive specialist Kylie Blom, who will serve as team captains for the ‘22 season. Both will see lots of playing time.

Matthew Curry / West Central Tribune

ACGC sophomore Mikaili Johnson recorded two kills in the Falcons’ 3-0 loss to BOLD on Tuesday, August 31, 2021 at Grove City.

“Claire and Kylie have really stepped up and taken a leadership role this year,” Shawna said. “It’s just really fun to see and to watch them.” The Falcons opened play Aug. 26 at the Howard Lake-WaverlyWinsted Tournament.

“We’ve got a great group of girls. Their camaraderie and how they play together is different from what we’ve ever seen before,” Shawna said. “They’re genuinely excited and happy for each other, and they all have a passion to win.”

BY MICHAEL LYNE West Central Tribune

BELGRADE — Behind third-year head coach Alanna Hunter, the Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa Jaguars are poised to be in similar territory as in ‘21 when they were the Central Minnesota Conference champions. After remaining undefeated with an 11-0 record at home en route to finishing the season with a 23-8 record as the Section 6A runner-up, BBE returns four starters and loses five key players from its 2021 roster. “We have some incredible returning offensive players, but have a new setter and many new defensive players this season,” Hunter said. “This team has some great leaders and I am looking forward to watching them take this team as far as we can go.” Senior outside hitter Ava Mueller leads the group of returnees for the Jaguars. She was voted the team’s player of the year in ‘21. A West Central Tribune All-Area Honorable Mention in ‘21, Mueller posted a team-high 411 kills, adding 173 digs, 46 service aces and 31 blocks. The other three returnees for BBE are senior middle hitter Allison Dingmann, senior outside hitter Abby Berge and junior middle hitter Brooklyn Fischer. Dingmann led the team with 43 total blocks. Fischer received second-team all-conference honors. A key loss is libero Emily Kern, who now plays for St. Cloud State. She was a member of the All-State team and the West Central Tribune All-Area team. She led the team in digs (495), serving points (338) and ace serves (62). Kern, in her senior season in ‘21, set school records in career digs (1,726) and career service aces (188). Senior Dacia Szczesniak will serve as BBEs new setter this season. She played in seven sets in ‘21. “Dacia has been very impressive this summer,” Hunter said. “She communicates well on the court with her teammates and works hard to make adjustments for them.” The Jaguars began their ‘22 campaign Aug. 30 against Osakis.

Braves hope to battle their way up the standings Six players — led by McGeary — return for Benson BY JOE BROWN West Central Tribune

BENSON — With six players back in the fold and a new head coach, the Benson volleyball team is hoping to climb up the West Central Conference standings. The Braves finished last in the West Central last year with a 1-11 mark and were 6-23 overall. Looking to turn around Benson’s fortunes is new head coach Ainsley Anderson. Five seniors — Libby McGeary (defensive specialist), Emma Krusemark (setter/right-side hitter), Ellie Krusemark (outside hitter), Lilly Slaughter (outside hitter) and Kyra Gronseth (middle hitter) — return to the lineup after being starters in ‘21. Another starter at middle hitter returns in junior Kaylin Grube. McGeary will look to patrol the back row after coming up with 347 digs last year to go with 21 ace serves and 21 set assists.

“She is a strong defensive specialist and covers the court well,” Anderson said of McGeary. “She will be an asset to our defense this year.” Slaughter and Gronseth are slated to be the big hitters for the Braves at the net. The 5-foot-7 Slaughter recorded 171 kills along with 226 digs and 25 ace serves. At 5-9, Gronseth tallied 78 kills, 21 ace blocks and 14 ace serves last season. They will be counted on to keep the Braves’ offense afloat as the team looks for a new setter following the graduation of Adysen Himley. “Lilly is a high-energy all-around player,” Anderson said. “She is a powerhouse at the net, a strong server and a great defensive player.” On Gronseth, Anderson said, “(She’s) a huge asset to our front row. She is a strong hitter and puts up a big block.” Benson got the ‘22 season underway on Aug. 25 in Madison against Lac qui Parle Valley.

BOLD looks to make moves in section Warriors reached 2A-North championship in ‘21 BY JOE BROWN West Central Tribune

OLIVIA — A season removed from making the Section 2A-North championship, the BOLD Warriors are hoping to go even further in 2022. After posting a 22-5 record last fall, BOLD is shifting around some of its pieces to find the right lineup for another deep postseason run. The Warriors’ top returner is junior Delaney Tersteeg. The West Central Conference setter of the year in ‘21, she’ll make the move to the back row to serve as the team’s libero. Tersteeg had 413 set assists, 150 digs and 27 ace serves last season. “Delaney has a great court presence,” said third-year head coach Baylie Kubesh. “Her quickness and ability to read on defense will be key to running our back court.” Filling in Tersteeg’s former role at setter will be sophomore Layla Pharr. She recorded 304

assists, 72 digs and 36 ace serves. She’ll set up an offense that is looking for firepower following the graduation of outside hitters Leslie Snow and Caylee Weber and right-side hitter Abby Meyers. “Layla is coming off a great freshman season,” Kubesh said. “As a sophomore, she has grown into a natural leader and will be who we look to to run our offense.” Senior Mari Ryberg is also changing roles. An All-West Central honorable mention at middle blocker last year with 96 kills, 133 digs, 41 ace blocks and 25 ace serves, she’ll move to outside hitter. “Mari is a very versatile and veteran player,” Kubesh said. “Her athleticism will be a key in our team’s success.” Junior Ady Knake shifts from right-side hitter to outside hitter. Also returning at the net is junior Kenzie Visser at middle blocker. “Ady has worked hard to

develop her offensive game throughout the offseason,” Kubesh said. “Improving her vertical and her overall volleyball IQ will give her an advantage over blockers.” On Visser, Kubesh added, “Kenzie is a work-horse and has become a key offensive threat for our team.” BOLD’s season got underway Aug. 30 at Morris/ChokioAlberta. The Warriors’ home opener is on Tuesday, Sept. 6 against Benson.

New CMCS coach hopes to keep the tradition going Lexi Scott, Class of ‘15, takes over Bluejays’ program BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

PRINSBURG — Central Minnesota Christian has a proud volleyball history which includes nine state Class A tournament appearances from 1997 to 2006. Included are state championships in 1998, ‘99 and 2000 and a state runner-up finish in ‘97. Lexi Scott, one of CMCS’ proud alums from a more-recent generation, hopes to continue that tradition as the Bluejays’ new head coach. Scott is a 2015 graduate of CMCS. She replaces Jill Haan, who retired after last season’s team finished with an 8-7 record in the rugged Camden Conference and 18-10 overall. Scott watched from afar as an assistant coach at BOLD. She’s a former University of Sioux Falls player with a degree in exercise science and psychology who works as a physical therapist assistant in Olivia. Scott said that Haan mentioned to her that she was moving to Iowa and was wondering if she might be interested in taking over the program. Her answer was a quick yes. “It’s kind of exciting,” Scott said of

being the new head coach. The Bluejays have four seniors: defensive specialist Desi Larson, setter Ava Schneiderman, outside hitter Cora Watson and defensive specialist Angie Morris. “I think they are all pretty competitive volleyball players,” Scott said of her senior class. There are seven juniors, led by outside hitter Lilly Mellema and middle hitter Lauren Taatjes. Both started last year. Taatjes is 6-foot. Mellema is 5-11. Also expected to contribute is Janessa Erickson, a 6-foot-1 middle hitter seeking her first significant varsity time. Avery Duininck is a junior setter also expected to contribute. CC Roiseland is a junior libero expected to make bigger contributions this season. Two ninth-graders are expected to play: outside hitter Carrie Mulder and right-side hitter/setter Emmi Braem. Mulder saw some action as an eighth-grader. “We expect to be competitive again,” Scott said, noting that the conference again will be difficult, led by MACCRAY, Minneota, Canby and TracyMilroy-Balaton.

Eagles eager to get started CCS has five seniors to lead it into CAL competition BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

WILLMAR — As the Community Christian School Eagles embark on the 2022 season, new head coach Rebecca Westin would like you to know a few things. “First is that we would glorify God on our team,” Westin said, “and that we would play some amazing volleyball.” There are five seniors on the squad. All are hard workers, receptive to learning. Leading the way is Sophie Bollig. She’s a captain and “very, very talented in all aspects of the game of volleyball,” Westin said. Setter and co-captain Alaina Holien also is a leader. “She’s huge on communication,” Westin said. “Communication is one of her biggest aspects. She’s always talking.” Katrina Velyan is a middle hitter/middle blocker and one of the taller players on the team.

Lilly Weber is a back row player and defensive specialist. “She’s very good at serving as well,” Westin said. “She’s a very solid server.” Kylee Tollefsrud is a front row player and right-side hitter. She also has good size. Also on the varsity is junior back row player Anna Lindgren and sophomore outside hitter Gabbie Bollig, Sophie’s sister. “She’s a huge hustler,” Westin said. “She’s definitely a hard worker and willing to learn.” Two ninth-graders also will contribute to the varsity: middle hitter Lexi Nelson and setter Grace Strom. Strom will rotate at setter with Holien and also contribute as a right-side hitter. CCS plays in the Christian Athletic League. While all the schools are small, the geography they cover is enormous. Teams playing volleyball are: Cambridge Christian, the Rochester Area Home School Defenders, the South Metro Huskies, Valley

Christian School of St. Croix Falls, Wisconsin, St. Cloud Christian, Faith Christian of Foreston, Immanuel Lutheran of Mankato and Hope Christian Academy of St. Paul Park. “We definitely will come against some tough opponents for sure,” Westin said. Westin is in her second year with the program. She coached the junior high team last year. She looks forward to coaching the varsity team, which she said is loaded with players good attitudes who are eager to learn.

Dawson-Boyd hopes big numbers, experience lead the way Blackjacks have six starters back and 45 players in the program heading into 2022 BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

DAWSON — The Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks are focused on improvement after going 6-12 in 2021. They base their hopes on excellent numbers throughout the program and four seniors who have been key performers. Leading the way is outside hitter Kate Dahl, a 5-foot-9 outside hitter who has started since eighth grade. “She has a lot of strength and has a big court awareness,” head coach Hailey Gritmacker said. Also back is senior setter Chelsie Husby. She was a full-time starter last season after getting playing time as a sophomore. She’s 5-foot-7. Madison Selchert is a defensive specialist. Experienced KMS aiming for a better season After some unusual struggles in 2021, the Fighting Saints are more experienced and have more depth BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

KERKHOVEN — After a long run of being toward the top of the Camden Conference, 2021 turned out to be quite different for KerkhovenMurdock-Sunburg. The Fighting Saints wound up going 0-11 in the Camden’s North Division and 7-21 overall. It was a surprise to Joquel Molenar, who is in her 11th season as head coach. “Our record was pretty poor last year,” Molenar said. “We were close in a lot of our matches, but we couldn’t finish off a lot of games. “Our conference is very tough. I’m looking for us to be a lot better record-wise.” The reason for optimism is eight seniors, six of whom started. All saw playing time last year. The group includes outside hitters Julia Carlson, Shakira Olson and Katie Klaphake. Middle hitter Taylor Haats, who was an honorable-mention All-Camden pick, was voted the team’s best offensive player. Carlson was voted as having the best team spirit. Also back is senior libero Elsa Gjerde and senior defensive specialist Josie

Gerde. Elsa Gjerde was voted the team’s best defensive player. “The girls are looking really strong,” Molenar said. “A few have stepped up into leadership positions and that was needed. Last year, we didn’t have a lot of confidence. This year, we’ll have a little more grit and fire and a little more depth.” Also back is sophomore Savannah Peterson, who was voted as the team’s most improved player. They’ll try to make up for the loss of Grace Collins and Karli Jensen. Collins was a three-year starter at setter. Jensen was a defensive specialist. “I think we’ll surprise a few people this year,” Molenar said. “I think it’ll be a good year.” A key player to watch will be Olivia Noble. The junior setter will be running the offense for the first time on varsity. “Noble is our starting setter this year,” Molenar said. “She has been waiting for her chance out on the court and is already doing some great things. “She has great hands, is a consistent setter — already — and is also an offensive threat as well. She is quick and can jump … Look for her to be noticed making an impact immediately out on the court.”

three returning starters and a new head coach. At the head of the bench this season is Brooklyn Gould, who takes over for Molly Hennen. Along with the 11-12 overall record, the Eagles were 2-9 in the Camden Conference. “LQPV is ready to compete this year,” Gould said. “We have a great group of athletes and we want our community and teams to have the LQPV volleyball team on their radar. Our team has put in a lot of work this summer and has learned so much before the season even started.” One of LQPV’s top attackers returns this fall in senior 5-foot-11 middle hitter Paige Meyer. She was an All-Camden honorable mention and an Academic AllConference pick. She finished with 112 kills and 36 blocks. “Paige is our strongest hitter on the team and very adjustable to sets,” Gould said. Quarterbacking the offense is another returner in senior setter Ayanna Gipson. Gipson finished with 240 set assists and 22 ace serves. “She’s a great setter and is scrappy in the back row,” Gould said of Gipson. The final returning starter is junior libero Isabel Gerdes. She had a teamhigh 263 digs in ‘21. “She’s a scrappy libero,” Gould said. “She’s quick and a great passer.” Also returning to the mix is senior setter Rylee Lund. She is back on the floor after missing last season due to injury. “She’s an all-around athlete that can pass, set and hit,” Gould said of Lund. The Eagles opened the season at home against Benson on Aug. 25. Their first conference match was Monday, Aug. 29 at home against Ortonville.

Opponents will need to keep track of her along the net,” Swenson said. “Olivia never quits and is extremely competitive… It’s hard to put a ball on the ground anywhere near her.”

Middle hitter Izzy Pennertz and defensive specialists Ciarra Resmen and Grace Braaten round out the big five senior group returning for Swenson’s Dragons. Pennertz ranked second with 190 kills and third with 54 blocks in ‘21. Resmen tallied 118 digs, 17 service aces, 12 assists and three kills. Braaten ranked third in digs (215) and receptions (272) in ‘21, adding nine service aces, nine assists, one kill and a block. Junior outside hitter Morgan Falling and sophomore outside hitters Asha Ehlers and Anna Sorgatz round out the Litchfield starting returnees. The three played in a combined 145 sets in ‘21. Three key losses the Dragons will be without this season are Kaity Kuzler, Addi Marquardt and JoJo Schultz. Kuzler ranked first in kills (197). Marquardt was first in digs (373) and digs (373). Schultz ranked fourth with 120 digs. The Dragons began the season Aug. 26 at the Rush City tournament.

New head coach takes over at MACCRAY Assistant coach Tory Boruwer takes over the Wolverines, who were 20-8 last season BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

CLARA CITY — Welcome Tory Brouwer as the new coach at MACCRAY. She takes over for Therese Bourne after being a varsity assistant last year. The Wolverines are coming off a good season. There are four starters back from a team that finished 9-3 in the Camden Conference North Division and was 20-8 overall. The Wolverines lost to Canby in the Section 3A playoffs 3-2 after opening the playoffs with a 3-1 victory over Renville County West. Key losses from 2021 include libero Ella Bourne, outside hitter Kylee Kimpling and right-side hitter Gabrielle Randt. This season, they’ll rely on all-stater Sydney Thein, a setter and outside hitter who will be one of the players to watch in the area. She led MACCRAY with 363 kills and “was a consistent back-row defender while also (recording) 342 set assists,” Brouwer said. Also back is senior outside hitter Jordan Thein, junior setter Annie Bourne and freshman middle blocker

Brielle Janssen. Janssen is a “successful middle hitter who has expanded her game over the summer and contributed 37 blocks last year,” Brouwer said. Another player to watch is Lexi Numi. She’s a sophomore middle blocker who “worked hard to develop her game and can play multiple positions,” Brouwer said. Brouwer describes MACCRAY as “a young team with potential and the ability to improve. (We) lost multiple key players from last year’s team with the chance for new athletes to step up.” The Wolverines opened the season Aug. 25 at Lakeview, then had a match scheduled for Aug. 30 at Ortonville. In fact, MACCRAY has four straight road matches to start the season, including Sept. 1 at Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa and Sept. 8 at Yellow Medicine East before its home-opener Sept. 13 against TracyMilroy-Balaton.Then, it’s two more road matches before the Jaguars again play at home Sept. 20 against Minneota, which finished second in the state in Class A in 2021.

Senior-less Lakers ready to surprise Minnewaska enters season with seven juniors on the squad BY JOE BROWN West Central Tribune

GLENWOOD — Though there isn’t a senior on the roster, the Minnewaska Lakers hope to play beyond their age. Three juniors — Haley Shea, Avery Fier and Dreya Barsness — are back in the starting lineup for the Lakers following a 7-20 campaign in 2021, which included a 2-10 West Central Conference record. Minnewaska has seven juniors on its varsity roster along with two sophomores and an eighth-grader. “Most of the team played together on varsity for two or more years,” said Lakers head coach Michele Johnson, “so we will rely on our past experience and leadership.” Shea will play at the net as the team’s setter. In her career, she has 670 set

assists, 241 digs, 34 kills and 20 ace serves (95.5% serving). Barness is an outside hitter and she returns as the Lakers’ top hitter. She has career totals of 166 kills, 178 digs and 38 ace serves. Fier will see time as both a middle hitter and an outside hitter. Her totals include 161 kills, 472 digs and 28 ace serves (95.5% serving). Shea, Barness and Fier all were voted captains for this year. Other juniors on the roster include: middle hitter/ right-side hitter Miaya Guggisberg; and defensive specialists Brookly Meyer, Grace Zenk and Amanda Lorhe. Minnewaska’ first match was Tuesday, Aug. 30 at Benson. The home opener is Thursday, Sept. 1 against BOLD. The Lakers will play in a conference that includes the defending state Class AA champion Sauk Centre Mainstreeters.

Minnewaska’s Addy Kath recorded three kills in the 3-0 loss to Montevideo on Thursday, Sept. 23, 2021 in Montevideo.

Koenen back in Thunder Hawks’ rotation Last year’s West Central MVP among Montevideo’s leaders BY JOE BROWN West Central Tribune

MONTEVIDEO — Spearheaded by one of the area’s top offensive players, the Montevideo Thunder Hawks are ready to climb the West Central Conference standings. Montevideo wrapped up the 2021 season with a 10-15 record, including 5-7 in the West Central. The Thunder Hawks will also have a new coach on the bench this season as John Mader takes over for Ashley Palmer. Mader will have the reigning Most Valuable Player in the West Central Conference in 6-foot-3 senior middle hitter Avery Koenen. In ‘21, Koenen finished with 417 kills, bringing her career total to 681. She also had 175 digs, 63 ace blocks, 22 ace serves and 18 set assists last season. Koenen was also picked Academic All-State. She is committed to play basketball at Division I North Dakota State University next season. Another senior will be at the net for Montevideo as setter Tenley Epema returns to the lineup. Six juniors will help fill roles on the floor: Maren Nelson, Avery Williams, Kiya Blom, Taya Weber, Callie Augeson and Addie Olson. Two sophomores are also vying for playing time in Teagan Epema and Emmie Koenen. Last year’s 10 wins were the most by the Thunder Hawks since going 15-13 in 2017. That is also the last year that Montevideo posted a winning record. The Thunder Hawks opened the season at home on Tuesday, Aug. 30 against West Central foe Melrose.

PAYNESVILLE — Led by Nicole Humbert, who is entering her 10th season as Paynesville’s head coach, the Bulldogs will look to build on their 5-2 record in the Central Minnesota Conference from the ‘21 season. Paynesville returns four starters — senior outside hitter Kyleigh Tangen and senior libero Emma Stanley and junior outside hitter Emma Flanders and junior middle blocker Maddie Frieler — this season. The four starters helped the Bulldogs to a 22-4-1 overall record in ‘21. One key loss in Paynesville’s lineup comes at the setter position in Aubrie Spanier. A senior setter in ‘21, Spanier led the Bulldogs with 864 assists, accounting for 88.4% of the team’s assists. Tangen is a key player to watch this season. She’s a four-year starter standing at 5-10 and was a member of the 2021 West Central Tribune AllArea volleyball team. She led the team in kills (463) and was second in digs (251), adding 35 service aces and 27 total blocks. She has committed to the

University of Sioux Falls, an NCAA Division II program in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. “Kyleigh understands her leadership role on the team,” Humbert said. “She is a positive competitor on the court.” Another key performer to keep eyes on during Paynesville’s season is Flanders, who stands at 5-10. She ranked second on the team in kills (215) and service aces (51), third on the team in digs (219) and tied for third with Tangen in total blocks (27). “Emma has a powerful swing at any position and consistent passing,” Humbert said. “This combination makes her presence felt on the court through her athleticism and volleyball IQ.” Stanley, a defensive specialist listed at 5-4, led the Bulldogs with 620 receptions and 254 digs in ‘21, tallying 26 service aces and the second-most assists on the team with 57. Up the middle, Frieler returns for Paynesville. She ranked second on the team with 35 total blocks, recording 28 kills, nine digs and two assists. The Bulldogs began their ‘22 season Aug. 26 at the Howard Lake-WaverlyWinsted Tournament.

Jaguars start fresh in 2022 With 10 seniors graduated, Renville County West will have lots of new faces in the lineup BY TOM ELLIOTT West Central Tribune

RENVILLE — The Renville County West Jaguars are starting with a clean slate in 2022. Most of the talent that took up varsity time in 2021 is gone. “We graduated 10 seniors from last year’s team, so there are many openings in the lineup this year,” said head coach

Ricahrd Schrupp, who has a 49-31 career record in three seasons. “This should make for a competitive season as we look to improve on the 13-15 record from last year.” Five starters graduated, including middle blocker Hannah Pharr (275 kills), Alice Hanson (234 kills) and Addison Tanner (691 set assists.

One starter is back: Ellie Wulf. She’s a 5-foot-7 senior outside hitter who had 75 kills and 259 digs last season. Wulf is one of two seniors on the roster. The other is Alexis Navarro, a 5-6 defensive specialist. A player to watch is Rachel Jakel. The 5-9 junior outside hitter had 51 kills in limited playing time as a sophomore and will be counted on for bigger things in 2022. She is one of five juniors on the roster, including Hannah Savig (5-3), Laila Ridler (5-8), Emily Lippert (5-7) and Coraley Bryan.

Sophomores are Heidi Beckendorf, Johanna Braun (5-8) and Avery Roxberg (6-2). “A strength of this team is we have many different players that can attack the volleyball,” Schrupp said. “A key for us this season will be serve-receive and defense.” The Jaguars opened the season Aug. 30 when it played host to Red Rock Central. RCW opens Camden Conference play Sept. 6 against KerkhovenMurdock-Sunburg in Renville. Then, the Jaguars get one of the Camden powers in Canby on Sept. 8, playing the Lancers on their home court, before heading to the Montevideo Tournament on Sept. 10.

Sting look to stand tall YME focused on improving from 10-15 record in ‘21 BY JOE BROWN West Central Tribune

GRANITE FALLS — With a steady core of players back in the fray, new head coach Alexis Peters hopes to boost the Yellow Medicine East Sting in the highly competitive Camden Conference South Division. Peters takes over for YME from former head coach Alyssa Johnson. In 2021, the Sting went 10-15 overall and 4-7 in the Camden. “I believe one of our big strengths will be our team chemistry and experience,” Peters said. “We have a solid group of upperclassmen that have been playing together for many years. Most of our upperclassmen have two-plus years of experience playing at the varsity level.” Among the top returners is 6-foot senior middle hitter Ruby Bones. She was YME’s team MVP last year while being named All-Camden honorable mention and Academic All-Conference. “As a middle last season, she had a .300 hitting efficiency, which is impressive for a middle,” Peters said of Bones. “She is also aggressive defensively at the net, coming in with 105 ace blocks last season. She is a smart player and finds ways to score for our team.” Three other seniors are back for the Sting. They include setter Aria Peters, outside hitter Hannah Stark and defensive specialist Kayla Nordaune. Another senior, Gracie Kleven, will look to help YME’s attack as an outside hitter. In the back row, junior Kiara Sakry returns at libero. Sakry finished with 247 digs, tops among returning players. “Kiara’s been our starting libero for the past two seasons,” Alexis Peters

said. “She has such a calm demeanor in the back row, reads the ball so well and makes those big defensive plays for us. I am excited to see what she will bring to the team this season.” The Sting opened the 2022 season on the road against Wabasso on Thursday, Aug. 25. The home opener was Tuesday, Aug. 30 against Paynesville. “With (our team’s) experience at this level, and being able to read the ball so well and knowing what different shots will score for us at the right time is going to be huge for us,” said Alexis Peters.
