BENSON — After a 3-6 season with a loss in the opening round of the Section 4A playoffs, Braves head coach Adam Foslien and company will compete in a tough Mid State Blue Sub District once again in ‘22.

Benson is led by West Central Tribune All- Area and All-District team member and fouryear starter Thomas Dineen.

A senior running back and defensive end, Dineen tallied 1,220 yards and 12 touchdowns on 198 carries. He also had 34 tackles, 4-1/2 sacks and 5-1/2 tackles for loss in ‘21.

No one has more career rushing yards (2,503), career tackles for loss (20) and career sacks (18) than Dineen.

The Braves’ offense will have its trio of power in ‘22. Alongside Dineen, senior quarterback/defensive back Ryan Tolifson and senior wide receiver/ defensive back Juan Espinoza are back.

Tolifson threw for 610 yards and five touchdowns. He ran for 227 yards and six touchdowns.

“These three will be a large part of our offense and defense,” Foslien said. “We have installed some new schematic things to utilize their athletic abilities and allow them to be the biggest threats possible.”

Benson has nine newcomers to its lineup in ‘22. All nine saw some varsity experience in ‘21, but will all have increased roles this season. Each player will look to make an impact, both offensively and defensively for the Braves.

“The Braves football team is one that lacks experience and depth, but is a group of guys who dedicated themselves in the offseason in the weight room. Hopefully that carries us in the season,” Foslien said. “Our district and section are absolutely loaded.”

Benson hosts Kimball at 7 p.m. Sept. 2 to begin its ‘22 campaign.
