Why I belong
"Joining the Chamber has been one of the best decisions I’ve made for my business. The networking opportunities and resources have been invaluable. I’ve met so many great people and learned so much from the events and workshops. Additionally, the Chamber has provided a great platform to showcase our company, and the resources we offer, such as our medical app called the BIG4 Health App and the new lifestyle approach meal replacement products called BIG4 Health Ingredients that can help prevent and reverse high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, and obesity. I highly recommend the Chamber to any business looking to grow and succeed."

CHAMBER PRESIDENT WARNER TO RETIRE THIS FALL
BY LINDA VANDERWERF WEST CENTRAL TRIBUNE
Ken Warner, longtime president of the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, has announced his plans to retire effective October 6th, the 38th anniversary of his beginning to work in the Chamber of Commerce industry.
Of that 38 years, 33 of them have been spent in Willmar. Warner’s time in Willmar was split by a two-year stint working for the St. Cloud Area Chamber of Commerce. He worked in Willmar from 1988 to 1995 and returned in 1997 after his time in St. Cloud.
In his letter to the board, he wrote, “It’s been a privilege and honor to serve the members of the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce. Together with a committed staff and hundreds of active volunteers, we have successfully built an organization dedicated to advancing the business interests of our members and the Kandiyohi County community.”
Warner wrote that he has “thoroughly enjoyed” his time at the chamber.
Reflecting on his career in an interview, Warner, 65, said he liked to look back on the community organizations and projects that were first discussed in the chamber offices after someone walked in and said, “Hey, I’ve got an idea. ... The majority of them weren’t because of anything I did, but I was able to be part of the team and see
some of these things happen.”
Among the accomplishments he listed — Willmar Lakes Area Convention and Visitors Bureau, Willmar Area Community Foundation, Destination Playground at Robbins Island, completion of the Highway
23/71 bypass around Willmar and the four-lane expansion of Highway 23 between Willmar and Interstate 94.
“It’s fun to drive around Kandiyohi County and see things I remember working on,” he said. “So many people do things because they want to do the right thing, not for the kudos and the attention.”
Willmar was named an All America City in 2005, something Warner recalled with pride. The award recognized the community’s efforts to deal with its growing diversity.
“We’re still dealing with it,” he said. The community’s efforts to welcome and integrate newcomers have led to continued recognition. Leaders from communities with changing populations now contact Willmar for guidance in navigating the change.
Perhaps the biggest challenge of his career came in recent years, “from the pandemic to everyone needing employees to requests for help so businesses continue to grow and prosper,” he said in his letter to the board.
The chamber lost dozens of members during the pandemic, he wrote, and he hopes they will eventually come back.
Warner said he plans to stay in Willmar after his retirement and hopes to find something to do part time.
“It’s been a fun career,” he said. “It’s going to be hard to not be in the middle of the fray.”

Why I belong
"I consistently support the Willmar Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce for a few reasons. First, assuming I put the time and energy into it, the Chamber is a great avenue to network with others. Second, I believe belonging to the Chamber is a must as a business owner, because of the final reason. Who better than the Chamber to lobby for you and place your interests first as a business owner? Our State is run by many with crazy ideologies who have no clue how business works, and are good talkers and not good doers. It’s difficult as a business owner to stand up and make a stink about these iniquities, but when the Chamber advocates for our causes and values, they do it on our behalf without me having to place my name on every opinion I have. We need a strong local Chamber to advocate for our interests as capitalists in this ever-increasing socialistic world."

“Atwater Ford signed up with the Willmar Chamber, at the urging of Milo Hallberg! He called on us for radio advertising, and was always trying to sign up new Chamber members. Atwater Ford has always done a significant percentage of our business with folks and businesses in the Willmar area, and we thought it was our duty to support the business community through the Chamber in return. We haven’t taken as active a role as we could have, but not because we haven’t been encouraged to—Ken has done a marvelous job at urging without being too pushy. I am proud of how vibrant OUR Chamber has remained over these 30+ years that Atwater Ford has been involved, and hope it will continue well into the future.”

IT’S ALL ABOUT WORKFORCE
KCEO
Kandiyohi Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (KCEO) partners with local businesses to create a realworld educational experience. Juniors and seniors from Willmar Public Schools, ACGC, and New London-Spicer are selected from a rigorous application process to participate in this year-long course. Instead of learning about entrepreneurship in a classroom, students will visit 20-30 local businesses and hear from over 50 guest speakers. Students create their own businesses and present them to local banking investors and entrepreneurs via private meetings and an annual trade show.
Student Job Fair & Career Expo
A workforce development program that brings together area employers with high school students in an interactive environment that allows them an opportunity to inform students about their company or organization. Recruit for full-time or part-time jobs and internships while identifying longterm prospects.

A Note from the Chamber President
Who would have believed I would have been so fortunate to spend 33 years as the President of your Chamber! One thing I’ll always remember is it’s never good bye, it’s always until next time. I’ve had the opportunity to meet, work with and appreciate all of the people that I have connected with as your Chamber President. It always seems our paths cross again. In fact, it’s quite amazing when that happens. It’s so fun when you get that call, email or text or even run into someone from the past in an airport or even in other countries. I bring this up because I had the opportunity to leave and return to Willmar. To my knowledge I never burned bridges with any of those I have met as you never know when you might have to walk over that bridge again. Probably my most important takeaway
while being in the Chamber business for 38 years.
There have been good times and bad. There have been challenges along the way that really did turn into opportunities. I tell everyone that I have ever interviewed that no day is the same at a Chamber and no day drags on. It’s always wow, it’s the end of another work day and the list I had for today will get it tackled tomorrow. That’s what I have completely loved about this job – the people, the variety, the highs and the lows, but most importantly at the end of the day hopefully making a difference.
As I was writing this, an email popped up from the St. Paul Chamber which contains their President and CEO’s weekly blog. As I read it, I thought this is me, the Chamber and the Kandiyohi County community, and I need to ask if I can borrow her quote.
“And what I realized was that I, myself, am Yesterday. I don’t quite know when it happened, I didn’t believe it first, but – yes – I am Yesterday. The shift is underway towards Tomorrow and we, together, are burdened with the responsibility of ushering it in”. B. Kyle, President & CEO St. Paul Chamber.
So, as I say “see you later”, I look forward to remaining part of the community and watching the succession plan for the Chamber and community take shape with new leadership, ideas and vision. This career has been more than I could have imagined as a kid from Windom where it all started at that Chamber in 1985. Thanks for believing in me and giving me the chance to have a job that I never really considered a job, but an opportunity to make a difference.
Why I belong
“When I moved to Willmar in 2016 (not knowing many people) I found the WLA Chamber events as a great avenue to meet people. As such, I give back by utilizing the membership directly anytime I’m looking for resources for my business. I’m proud that I first look local (and at WLA Members) for any business needs.”

5 JOB INTERVIEW MISTAKES TO AVOID
JOB INTERVIEWS ARE STRESSFUL. BESIDES ANSWERS TO TOUGH QUESTIONS, EMPLOYERS LOOK FOR COMPETENCY CLUES WHEN WEEDING OUT CANDIDATES. HERE ARE FIVE MISTAKES TO AVOID WHEN YOU’RE IN THE HOT SEAT.
1. ARRIVING LATE. Showing up late without notifying the hiring manager will hurt your chances of getting the job. Managers often have numerous interviews to get through on the same day. Failure to arrive on time shows a lack of respect for their time.
2.FAILING TO ASK QUESTIONS. During the interview, the recruiter will ask you if you have any questions. Having nothing to ask suggests you’re disinterested or have done little research. Prepare questions
ahead of time.
3. DISSING PAST EMPLOYERS. No matter how bad your experience was in a previous job, badmouthing previous employers won’t look good on you. Stay positive and focus on what you’ve learned from your experiences.
4. DISCUSSING MONEY OR TIME OFF. Unless the employer has already mentioned it, don’t bring up salary expectations or time off. Instead, focus on how your
skills make you the perfect candidate.
5.FAILING TO FOLLOW UP. Send the employers a message several hours after the interview and thank them for their time. Repeat key points from the interview to show your engagement and reiterate your interest in the job. This keeps you top of mind. Finally, dress for success. Avoid smart casual attire and wear professional business clothes to give yourself the best chance.

WE VALUE OUR EMPLOYEES
At West Central Steel we know the importance of having the right people on our team. As a family‐owned company, we value our employees and know our success is tied to their success.
We help manufacturers and fabricators grow their businesses by providing carbon steel distribution and parts processing. Our business started in 1949 as a steel scrap yard. Since then we have evolved to a leading steel distributor and parts manufacturer. By focusing on our customer’s needs we have built a reputation for being responsive, reliable, and innovative.
As a steel distributor, we purchase steel from steel mills throughout the country by truckload, railcar, or barge load. Then sell the steel to manufacturers and fabricators in the five-state area. Many times, the steel is delivered the next day. This allows customers to save money with reduced inventory and lower material handling costs.
Our parts processing capabilities include saw, torch, plasma and laser cutting for both flat and three-dimensional steel shapes. In addition to cutting parts, parts can be formed with press brakes capable
of bending steel up to 1 inch thick at 30 feet wide.
We are continually growing and have done 9 expansions over time. In 2018, the company opened the largest expansion yet with an 85,000 square foot parts processing facility. The new facility contains cutting-edge technology to save customers time and money. As an example, we saved a manufacturer over 1,000 production hours over a year by using the latest technology to drill and tap over 30 holes on a part that was 7-foot by 10-foot and 1-inch thick, that they were previously drilling by hand. Investing in the future is integral to how we do business whether it is in our people, relationships, technology or the community. We are involved in many workforce development initiatives in the area. Kandiyohi Creating Entrepreneurial Opportunities (KCEO) and Manufacturing and Processing Careers (MAP) with area high schools are two key initiatives we sponsor. With manufacturing jobs in high demand, the programs expose high school students to great jobs in the community and strengthen the manufacturing base in the area.
We are proud members of the Metals Service Center Institute (MSCI) and the North American Steel Alliance. Both organizations broaden the benefits that we deliver to our customers and employees.
If you are interested in joining a growing company start the process of becoming a West Central Steel team member today by completing our online application.

RESKILLING
The World Economic Forum estimates that half of all employees worldwide will require reskilling by 2025 due to technological advancement. Reskilling can help increase a company’s bottom line by bringing out its employees’ full potential.
Both reskilling and upskilling strategies help your company foster a culture of learning in the workplace and help your employees adapt seamlessly to change.

HOW TO ATTRACT MILLENNIAL EMPLOYEES
ACCORDING TO A SURVEY BY DELOITTE, BY 2025, 75 PER CENT OF THE WORKFORCE WILL BE MADE UP OF MILLENNIALS. AS AN EMPLOYER, YOU MUST LEARN THIS GENERATION’S MOTIVATIONS, NEEDS AND EXPECTATIONS TO ATTRACT, ENGAGE AND KEEP THEM IN YOUR COMPANY. HERE ARE FIVE THINGS TO CONSIDER.
1. HIGHLIGHT VALUES. Millennials want to work for a company with values that align with theirs. For them, a job isn’t just about a paycheque. It’s very much about having a purpose and making a difference.
2. CREATE FLEXIBILITY. Millennial candidates are looking for a job that offers a worklife balance. For example, they’ll prioritize companies that offer remote or hybrid work schedules.
3.PRIORITIZE ADVANCEMENT.
Career progression is a top priority for millennial workers. They’re much more likely to stay at a company if they feel upper management is invested in their careers. Ensure you have strategies and policies in place to facilitate career progression.
4. OFFER CONTINUED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES. Millennials want to advance and learn new things to progress in their careers. They’ll seek out employers who can provide these opportunities. Investing
in training and development can help catch and keep their attention.
5. EMBRACE TECHNOLOGY. Technology is essential to the millennial workforce. Therefore, integrating popular technologies and platforms into your business can give you a decisive edge in attracting this generation.
Ensure your company continues to grow and thrive by appealing to millennial employees.

4 POWER SKILLS YOU CAN LEARN
EMPLOYERS TRADITIONALLY CONSIDER SOFT SKILLS, LIKE ADAPTABILITY AND RESILIENCE, DESIRABLE BUT LOWER PRIORITY THAN ROLE-SPECIFIC HARD SKILLS. HOWEVER, AS DEMANDS FOR SPECIALIZED EXPERTISE SHIFT EVER-INCREASINGLY, THOSE CONSISTENT, NICE-TO-HAVE TRAITS ARE BECOMING SO VALUABLE THAT HR PROFESSIONALS ARE NOW CALLING THEM POWER SKILLS. HERE ARE FOUR LEARNABLE POWER SKILLS YOU CAN UPGRADE THROUGH TRAINING OR COACHING.
1.MINDFULNESS. If you already have a personal mindfulness practice, you know how beneficial it is to your mind and body. Mindfulness training can also help you navigate challenging workplace situations and improve your job performance.
2. DIVERSITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSION. Many organizations seek to build social and economic value by representing society in full rather than select groups. You can add value to your
resume and enrich your work experience if you promote diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace.
3. COMMUNICATION. From public speaking to faceto-face conversations and Zoom etiquette, there’s always room to improve your communication skills. Select a communication skill you’d like to improve upon; you’re sure to find a course or a tutor to help you grow your skill set.
4. CONFLICT RESOLUTION.
Some people are born peacemakers, but anyone can learn effective strategies for handling workplace conflicts. Whether you’re in leadership and must moderate employee disagreements or you want to improve engagement with colleagues, conflict resolution training can help.
Explore the lifelong learning course offerings at your local college or university to discover opportunities to expand your power skill toolkit.

3 BENEFITS OF USING PODCASTS IN YOUR RECRUITING STRATEGY
WHEN FILLING A POSITION WITHIN YOUR COMPANY, IT CAN BE HARD TO CONVEY WHAT YOUR HIRING MANAGERS ARE LOOKING FOR IN A WRITTEN JOB POSTING. RECENTLY, THE CITY OF EDMONTON BEGAN RECORDING SHORT PODCASTS ALLOWING THEIR HIRING MANAGER TO INFORM POTENTIAL CANDIDATES ABOUT DIFFERENT ROLES. HERE ARE A FEW REASONS TO TRY IT FOR YOUR COMPANY.
1.INSIGHTFUL. A podcast is a quick and easy way to digest information about a job without requiring much reading. The hiring manager can give candidates an immediate insight into the position and work culture.
2.IMPACTFUL. Unlike text, audio recordings have a high emotional impact.
Hearing someone’s voice feels more sincere and honest than a written posting. Consequently, a podcast can instill a sense of trust, encouraging more people to apply.
3. ACCESSIBLE. Many candidates are busy and may not have the time to read several written
job postings. Having information about job openings in podcast form allows people to multi-task and job search on the go.
Finally, podcasts are a costeffective and engaging way to reach people with unique skill sets who no longer look in traditional places for information.
