Westben is a place where nature, music and community come together. It’s set in a beautiful, rolling meadow in the territory of the Michi Saagiig (Mississauga) Anishinaabeg also known as Northumberland County. The birds, frogs, and breezes have always been a part of the concert experience since The Barn was built in 2000. Now, as we recognize the threats to biodiversity and other intersecting environmental challenges around us, Westben would like to be a more responsible steward for the environment and promote sustainable and equitable living in the area. In April 2022, we started our Sustainability Team. While it may be a ‘drop in the ocean’ considering our planetary climate crisis, it’s been highly fulfilling to come together with folks and local community organizations interested in caring for the long-term health of this special place.

If you are interested in joining our sustainability team, we would love to have you! Commitment is flexible based on your capacity and any background is welcomed. Maybe you’re more interested in the planning and visioning of what holistic sustainability might mean? Perhaps then you’d like to join our monthly meetings to update, co-create and implement our sustainability action plan and exchange dreams. Or maybe you’re more interested in sharing or picking up new skills on the ground, getting your hands dirty? Perhaps then you’d like to help our birdhouse and bird habitat project to protect at-risk birds on the property, or help plant native flowers with our hula hoop garden project, or assist in our early attempts at a circular waste station. Please email ben@westben.ca for more information.
