The embarrassment of riches afforded by the world of opera makes putting together a season both easy and hard. There’s the balance between retouching old favourites and the excitement of new music. There’s a wealth of interesting productions and new singers to hear. Although, ultimately, it’s a unique experience for everyone, because opera is about a joy in the human voice and great storytelling, leading us to celebrate and examine our lives and shared histories. And we all come to that from different places.

Bringing together a couple of my great loves – opera and cricket – looks like vanity programming in the restaging of Carmen at the WACA but I can’t think of a better place, a more celebrated place, to play out a story so large you feel a stadium couldn’t contain the love and jealously of just two people.

Because opera is ever new, we look to one of the masterpieces of recent times with Sondheim’s Into the Woods, staged here by a great Australian export, Cameron Menzies, from Northern Ireland Opera. Witty, shocking, and moving in equal measure this production received rave reviews and sell out crowds in its recent premiere season, a must see for anyone who said or thought “I wish….”

In his only Australian production, German- born director Harry Kupfer’s staging of Verdi’s masterpiece Otello comes to Perth for the first time. Set in the recent past, Kupfer’s lens investigates our hero’s heart and sees that even the purest love can fall foul of jealousy and confusion. A massive chorus, a huge

set and an incredible Australian cast will drive one of Verdi’s last masterpieces to its inevitable, shocking conclusion.

Since its premiere in 2021 Koolbardi wer Wardong has been travelling around Noongar boodja bringing its timeless story to new singers and new audiences. With a final tour to Bunbury the magpie and crow might rest, but the work of superstars Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse goes on. Stay tuned for an all new work, developed this year and next that will change the way we think about love and the land we walk on.

The development of local talent is central to the retelling of stories in a way that speaks to us in the here and now. Matt Reuben James Ward has developed a body of work that is beautiful, thoughtful, challenging, and exciting. In an allnew production of La bohème we see this talent leave its fingerprints on a masterwork of the opera canon while swooning to the most beautiful music ever written.

Of course, none of the above would be possible without our supporters, audiences, corporates, governments, donors and artists. My heartfelt thanks to them, also to our board, and the remarkable WAO team, nimbly led by the unflappable Carolyn Chard.

West Australian Opera is proud to announce the second Wesfarmers Arts commission from Gina Williams and Guy Ghouse.

What would you do for love?

Set in York, in the heart of Ballardong Country, Wundig wer Wilura tells the story of Walwalling (Mount Bakewell), the place of tears, and Wongborel (Mount Brown), the sleeping woman.

Wundig is a handsome young warrior of the hills people who falls in love with Wilura, a beautiful girl from the valley people. But when forbidden love and family politics raise the stakes, we discover a love and passion that has lasted 3000 generations.

‘This story is uniquely West Australian and very special to the Ballardong people of York, many of whom are descendants of those who walked this land at the time of Wundig and Wilura. For years opera has been a platform for sung stories to be shared, for culture to be celebrated and for language to transcend on a universal level. It makes opera a natural home to share first nation stories, to demonstrate the power of language and the importance of legacy to connect and speak to us all’

YOUNG ARTISTS PROGRAM

West Australian Opera is committed to nurturing the next generation of opera talent via the Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist Program.

In 2023, Wesfarmers Arts Young Artists are Bella Marslen (soprano), Jillian Halleron (soprano), Ammon Bennett (tenor), and Jake Bigwood (bass).

The Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist Program offers a mentorship experience for Western Australian artists that includes coaching, masterclasses and performance. The program aims to develop technical skills and stagecraft. The support of Wesfarmers Arts and the Bendat Family Foundation, who support the Bendat Scholarship, has seen alumni build successful careers on opera stages locally, nationally and internationally.

‘I’m very excited to work more with this talented group of future opera stars. Opera is one of the most difficult crafts to master and singers spend many years developing their talent, gathering experience and maturing vocally and dramatically. The flexibility in our program to continue our mentorship over multiple years provides a unique opportunity for ongoing training, support and performance opportunities. The Wesfarmers Arts Young Artist Program has produced many artists who have graced stages here and around the world, I expect Bella, Jillian, Ammon and Jake to continue this fine reputation’
