fter a recent lunch, where she showed me samples of her work, I realized that Missy Harris has been The Illustrator of West Austin. For decades, her stylish drawings have graced magazines and advertisements, and promoted society events. She’s thoroughly West Austin and she loves talking about attending private 1st and 2nd grades at Miss Huberich’s School for Young Ladies in Tarrytown; Wooldridge Elementary; O. Henry: and then Austin High and the University of Texas, where she was a Tri-Delt. Her grandfather was Edmond Rather, the general manager of The University CoOp for 50 years and her father was Wroe Owens, a prominent attorney who had a career with the FBI and involvement in the entertainment business in Los Angeles. Wroe was also an entre-

preneur who had a knack for connecting with others with innovative ideas. On that note, he was driving an electric car along Pecos in the 1960s and 70s. Missy’s childhood memories: living on Oakmont before moving to Hartford Road, the Chicken Shack and Lung’s Chinese Kitchen. El Matamoros, Matt’s El Rancho, and Piccadilly Cafeteria downtown, Victor’s for a romantic dinner, and Maroon Mill and The Holiday House for burgers. Missy always had a knack for illustration, and she was influenced by her mother’s drawing “pretty faces” and inspired by paper doll books. She remembers childhood summertime art lessons from Sally Archibald, with classmates Sylvia Irwin Betts (Mrs. Charles Betts) and Barbara Roberts. “I loved getting movie magazines and the fashions I saw by Edith Head, Jean Louis, and others.” Her favorite gifts were legal pads from the Co-Op and pencils. “I would turn the pad sideways and the margin rule would be my ‘stage’ for drawing ballerinas and fashion models.” There was no doubt about her choosing the University of Texas, due to all of her family members who attended it and her grandfather’s managing the Co-Op. “Everyone knew I could draw and decided I would major in art.” Missy says that there was no fashion illustration major back then. But she was thrilled when a guest artist came to a class and showed how to draw taffeta and furs. Professor Ralph White allowed Missy to draw imaginary magazine and newspaper ads which were juried for a grade. She was told time and time

ABOUT MISSY’S DAD

Wroe Owens’ involvement in Hollywood came in his mid-career. He mentored actors/clients, such as Jim Brewer and Justus McQueen, who adopted the screen name LQ Jones. Building on his associations and clients in Tinseltown, Wroe started producing movies, the most prominent one being “None But the Brave.” He also had contacts and involvement with John Wayne’s BatJac Productions; James Arness, Jeff Chandler, and other stars; and projects with Bud Boetticher, onetime husband of Debra Paget. He often frequented New York City, taking his wife, Missy, and her sister Melissa (now Jackson) along. Missy had her horizons broadened by viewing theatre, opera, and ballet in Manhattan and eating at restaurants like Sardi’s. On one unforgettable trip, they dined with a famous comedian Jerry Lester and saw a live production of “Show of Shows” with Imogene Coco, Sid Caesar and Carl Reiner. In Hollywood as a teenager, Missy had her makeup done by one of the legendary Westmore brothers. Melissa played a part that was filmed, but cut from an episode of “Gunsmoke.” One leftover from those days — Missy has a black-and-white film that she thinks is a Western — it’s still on a reel in a canister.

She has drawn sketches of Willie Nelson for the Brackenridge Gala; Darrell Royal; Coach Frank Broyles, for a private party; and of Bobby Bones for a Helping Hand Champions Luncheon. For 32 years, Missy has been working for the Texas Senate Publications and Printing as administrative coordinator, under the lead of the director working with the printers, computer artists, etc. Previously, she was the Executive Secretary of the Texas Federation of Women’s Clubs and Secretary for the Bachelors of Austin. She currently has some children’s books in progress along with other projects. Of course, she is proud of her two daughters, Stacia Harris Price and Kara Harris Norris, who have continued the West Austin tradition of graduating from Austin High and UT. “Maybe I was dismissed as a sorority girl when I was in school, but I did get to use my art and I continue to do so and enjoy it,” Missy says. “I’m having fun! Why stop now?”

Side by Side Kids “Heart of a Lion” Gala By Anne DeVries On October 12, the Side by Side Kids (SBSK) organization held its 5th annual Heart of Lion Gala at Austin Country Club. The sold-out event featured award-winning television journalist Leslie Rhodes as MC. NBA Hall of Famer David Robinson was the keynote speaker. SBSK serves Pre-k through fifth-grade students in some of Austin’s most under-resourced areas. It was established in 1996 to provide after-school academic support and spiritual growth for economically disadvantaged students in the Austin Independent School District (AISD). They aim to provide each child with a brighter future by encouraging and equipping them with new skills and a faith-based approach to life to help them reach their highest potential. Volunteers and paid staff at SBSK work during the academic year to greet students warmly after school each day. A structured program designed by University of Texas professors and SBSK staff includes snack time, academic support, recreational activity, and character-building bible lessons encouraging children to pursue a relationship with Jesus Christ. Sarah Ribeiro, Vice President of Development and Communications for SBSK, is a committed contributor to the organization’s ongoing growth. She shared that the primary challenge for SBSK is funding. There are currently over 100 students on the waitlist for the after-school program. More classrooms are needed, each requiring supplies and staffing. The Heart of a Lion Gala brought volunteers, SBSK staff, board members, and supporters of the cause together in a focused effort to raise more funding. Encouragement for the shared endeavor was further ignited by the inspiring message of the event highlight, a talk by David Robinson, nicknamed “The Admiral” due to his years at the U.S. Naval Academy before his NBA career. His words energized the room as he spoke about the noble virtues needed to be a good human being and the importance of education and strong character, all values shared by the SBSK mission. Visit their website at www.sidebysidekids. org for more information. Donations, paid staffing positions, and volunteer opportunities are continuously being accepted to maintain existing classrooms and work toward moving children from the waitlist into a classroom.

Austin Smiles to Honor Austin Doctors Bill Davis and Carolyn Biebas The 37th Annual Wish Upon a Smile Gala celebrates Austin Smiles’ dedication to transforming the lives of children with cleft lip and palate in Central Texas and Latin America. This year’s gala is Nov. 4 at the Oasis on Lake Travis at 5:30 in the evening, just in time for sunset. The gala takes on special significance this year, as Austin Smiles awards the 5th Annual Cullington, Fox, Beckham International Service Award to Dr. Bill Davis and Dr. Carolyn Biebas. Davis, one of Austin Smiles founding surgeons, dedicated his career to care of children born with cleft conditions. His compassion has been demonstrated through his engagement in dozens of international medical missions and his service to children in Central Texas. Biebas, a revered anesthesiologist in Austin, has been with Austin Smiles since its inaugural mission, and is still lending her talent and leadership on Austin Smiles’ current sites in Mexico, Guatemala and El Salvador. The Austin Smiles community is grateful to these two individuals for making a difference for 37 years. Without their humanitarian leadership of providing safe, comprehensive, quality surgical care, many children would have gone without care. This award symbolizes Smiles’ volunteer-driven mission, honoring exceptional contributors who advance its transformative purpose. Austin Smiles mission supports children with cleft conditions, affecting 1 in 700. Collaborating with local and international partners, it ensures comprehensive care from infancy to adulthood. Obituary

Fred Hagen McMahon, Jr. NOVEMBER 16, 1942 - OCTOBER 1, 2023

Ed and Susan Auler at Fall Creek Vineyards in Tow, Texas.

Ed Auler JULY 28, 1945 – OCTOBER 14, 2023 Ed Auler, age 78, died on Saturday, October 14, 2023. An Austin native and a graduate of McCallum High School and the University of Texas School of Law, Ed loved his hometown and Texas. In 1967, Ed married Susan Teeple, his partner for life. After graduating from UT, in addition to his practice of law, Ed took over the cattle breeding and production on his family’s ranch. But inspired by what they saw on a trip they took to France in 1973, Ed and Susan decided that they would establish a winery and make Texas a respected wine region. After study and research, they began their professional journey in a renovated garage in 1979, and in 1983, they opened Fall Creek Vineyards in Tow, northwest of Austin. They accomplished

what they set out to do -- Ed and Susan’s leadership played an important role in making the Texas Hill Country one of the most prominent wine regions in the country. The list of national and international awards that the Aulers amassed for their wines is extensive and began almost as soon as they started production. Over the years, Ed and Susan became icons of the business, known as the “First Family of Texas Wines.” In 1986, they established the Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival to publicize the Texas wine industry. This event is now one of the leading wine and food events in the country, allowing world-class winemakers and chefs to display their skills. Ed was an Advisory Board Member of Frost Bank, a Board

Member of St. David’s Hospital Foundation and a Past Board Member of St. Andrew’s Episcopal School. Ed was also a Past-President of the Admirals Club of Austin and Tarry House. However, Ed’s greatest passion in life was his family. As a father, Ed coached youth basketball and spent countless weekends with his sons hunting and fishing. As a grandfather, Ed was often present at school and sports activities. Ed is survived by his wife Susan, their children, Chad (Stacy) and Mark (Clary), their grandchildren, Yates Auler, Charles Auler, Ash Auler, Daisy Auler and Shelby Auler. The family requests that anyone wishing to honor Ed’s life make contributions to Austin Ridge Church or West Austin Youth Association.

Hagen McMahon passed away peacefully in his Austin home on Sunday, Oct. 1, embraced by the love of his family. He was a one-of-akind, larger-than-life, true Texas gentleman who loved people, animals, adventure, and the challenge of negotiating a win-win business deal. He was involved in bank management, governmental relations, business consulting, investment banking, and oil and gas interests for more than 50 years. He served as executive director of the Independent Bankers Association and represented their interests at the Texas Legislature and in Congress. During his banking career, he served as an advisor to four Presidential Administrations on matters concerning banking legislation and federal regulations. He was an enthusiastic Kappa Sigma brother and served in various leadership roles as an alumnus of the University of Texas Tau Chapter. He oversaw the design and construction of the Kappa Sigma Lodge in 2010 and Warren Residence Hall in 2016. He was chosen in 2010 as the Kappa Sigma Tau Man of the Year, the highest honor bestowed to a Kappa Sig alum by the University of Texas Tau Chapter. In 2005, Kappa Sigma National Fraternity honored him with the John G. Tower Distinguished Alumni Award. The Tau Chapter honored him with the Frank C. Erwin Award in 2005, 2006, and 2007.

Fred Hagen McMahon Jr.

His priority was his family and close inner circle of friends. He was known for his sterling character and as a rainmaker for helping many people in their careers. He loved the ocean and family time at Port Aransas, boating trips in the Pacific Northwest, the San Juan Islands, and the Mediterranean Sea. He was a licensed pilot, scuba diver, and entertaining raconteur. He earned a Bachelor of Business and Economics from UT Austin and an MBA from the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University. His survivors include his loving wife, Susan, son William Wroe “Beau” McMahon; Fred Hagen McMahon III

and his wife, Victoria Sicola McMahon; Wynne McMahon Kennedy and her husband, John Vandervoort Kennedy; four grandchildren, Avery, Lucy, Walker, and Hagen IV; sister, Carolyn Kirklin; nephew Brad Kirklin, his wife, Natalie, and their three children; niece Meaghan Kirklin Conrad, her husband, Charles, and their two children; and a host of extended family members with whom he remained close throughout his life. Anderson High School Project Graduation benefits from parking space fundraiser The Anderson High School Class of 2024 Project Graduation event will provide all Anderson High School seniors with a safe environment to celebrate graduation night, a drug-free and alcohol-free all-night party. Project Graduation has been provided by Anderson High, parents, and community supporters since 1999, and, typically, about 85 percent of the graduating class attends the free event that includes entertainment, food, games, prizes, fun. This summer’s Anderson Parking Space Fundraiser was one of many fundraisers during the year to support Project Graduation. Thanks to corporate and individual sponsors, seniors

were able to customize their own parking spot on campus before the start of the school year. On Aug. 11-13 family and friends joined together to create parking space designs full of creativity and personality. If you are interested in making a donation to the AHS Class of 2024 Project Graduation for the event, scan the QR code. It takes a village, y’all. Megan Helmbrecht and Beth Payan are Anderson Project Graduation 2024 co-chairs. The date of Anderson Project Graduation will be announced as Austin ISD announces 2024 high school graduation dates. Nicole Netherton Joins Pease Park Conservancy as New CEO Pease Park Conservancy has announced that Nicole Netherton has been selected as its new chief executive officer. She was most recently the executive director for Travis Audubon, a position she held for five-and-a-half years. Netherton joins Pease Park Conservancy at a pivotal time. After fundraising for and managing the renovation of the southernmost seven acres of Pease Park, the Conservancy reopened Kingsbury Commons to the public in the summer of 2021. With support from the City of Austin through a Park Operations and Maintenance Agreement (POMA), the Conservancy has taken primary responsibility for the operations, maintenance, and programming

of Kingsbury Commons and shared responsibility for conservation efforts throughout the entire 84 acres of the park. Looking ahead, the Conservancy will work with the City on a plan to expand the standard of care that the community now enjoys in Kingsbury Commons to all of Pease Park. Netherton said, “I am excited to be a steward of a place that is so important to Austin’s past, present, and future, both for people and for nature. Caring for green space in our cities affects our health and wellbeing and we owe it to ourselves and to Mother Nature to protect these spaces. We have to balance the needs of the people who love the park and the needs of the ecosystem so that both can thrive.”

About Pease Park and Pease Park Conservancy Pease Park Conservancy was formed in 2008 and celebrates the diverse ecology and history that make Austin’s first public park valuable and unique. In partnership with the Austin Parks and Recreation Department, the Conservancy works to restore, enhance, and maintain this public green space for the sustainable use and enjoyment of all. Unfolding across 84 acres owned by the City of Austin, Pease Park is a series of connected green spaces running along Lamar Boulevard from West 15th to West 31st Streets.

Great Halloween Costumes From The Past

— Compiled by Forrest Preece

In honor of this month’s spooky celebration, I decided to ask some of the more fun-loving people I know around town to send me photos and stories about their favorite costumes.

3. If you could have dinner with three people – dead or alive, at any time in history—who would they be? My father who died early and Oscar Wilde (what a conversation). Those two would be more than enough. 4. If you had to pick three musicians for a playlist, who would they be? Joni Mitchell, Laura Nyro, and The Beatles

Johnny in his home, 2013

5. Favorite book and TV show? Old Yeller and I Love Lucy 6. Most powerful movie you have seen. Saving Private Ryan 7. Favorite place in Austin? My home

Kristen and Aaron Day At a Halloween work party hosted by Kristen’s former CEO, she and her husband Aaron came dressed up as Johnny Cash and June Carter. “The band just assumed that Aaron and I could sing and asked us to perform! I still can’t believe we found the nerve to belt out ‘Jackson’ in front of so many colleagues,” Kristen says.

9. What did you want to be when you were growing up? A fireman 10. Which living person do you most admire? Any special ed teacher 11. What makes you happy? Waking up and realizing how blessed I am … didn’t wake up in Ukraine …

12. Best advice you ever received? From my mom … if you can’t say anything nice …

Peggy Pickle and Donald Cook In Peggy Pickle’s words: “For years, my late husband, Donald Cook, and I belonged to a dance club which held three dances a year. The October dance was a Halloween costume party. The year we went as Egyptians we won Best Costume. I had a terrific black wig and Don was a well-fed Pharaoh. A major anachronism was the Pharaoh’s bifocal glasses. But hey, if you can’t see, you can’t rule the Middle Kingdom.”

Susan Bergstrom On one occasion, Susan Bergstrom went with Peggy and Don to their Halloween dance party, dressed as Baby Jane Hudson, the main character in “What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?” In Peggy’s words, Susan “out-Bette Davised” Bette Davis that night.

The Pugh/Remadna family No column on West Austin Halloween costumery would be complete without a photo from the Pugh/Remadna family. Here you see Lynn Remadna (center) with her dad and mom, Robert and Norma Pugh, all dressed up for a Halloween party. Bob was known for clowning around as a headless man and many years, he had an invisible dog on a leash. Thanks to Lynn’s son Nabil for supplying this photo.

Austin Community Raises More Than $60,000 to Benefit CureDuchenne at Annual Ladies Luncheon Leading global nonprofit CureDuchenne held the annual Ladies Luncheon at the Austin Country Club, which raised more than $60,000 to help find a cure for Duchenne muscular dystrophy. The Ladies Luncheon was started by Austin residents Tim and Laura Revell and hosted this year by Venus Strawn and Jennifer Stevens. The event invited guests to experience an “Afternoon in Palm Beach” complete with fine dining, inspiring speakers, raffles, and a fall fashion show. Leslie Porter and her son Grant, who is 12 years old and has Duchenne muscular dystrophy, spoke about the challenges of living with the disease, their worries for the future, and what a cure would mean for them. Tim and Laura Revell learned their two sons Timothy and Andrew were diagnosed with Duchenne, the most common and severe form of muscular dystrophy, at two and five years old. At the

time of their boys’ diagnoses, treatments and information on Duchenne was limited. The Revells began to research the rare disease and connected with CureDuchenne for resources. Tim and Laura have created several fundraising events to raise awareness and funds for CureDuchenne, including marathons, galas and the annual Ladies Luncheon. To date, the family has helped raise more than $6.2 million. Duchenne muscular dystrophy is a fatal genetic disease that affects roughly 1 in 5,000 male births. Individuals with Duchenne are typically diagnosed as toddlers, lose the ability to walk in their early-teens and often succumb to the disease in their mid20s. Since CureDuchenne was founded in 2003, the organization has raised more than $50 million for research and funded 17 research projects that have advanced to human clinical trials. T

he Women’s Symphony League of Austin (WSL) hosted the 68th Annual Jewel Ball on Saturday, September 16, 2023, at the Hilton Austin with more than 1000 guests in attendance. This year’s Jewel Ball CoChairs, Olivia Derr and Julia Null, and their committee of 75 volunteers created a magical evening

“Under the Texas Stars.” The evening celebrated and recognized the Diamond Queen, five princesses, and six escorts from Austin, honoring the support of local families for the WSL and Austin Symphony Orchestra. The WSL also invited six outstanding college-aged young women and men from across the state of Texas to represent their local symphony organizations as

members of the Visiting Jewel Court. “We are honored to have chaired this year’s Jewel Ball, continuing this cherished Austin tradition that benefits the Austin Symphony Orchestra,” said cochair Olivia Derr. “It is with great pride that we celebrated the families of our Royal Court and their commitment to the arts in Austin

and the state of Texas,” said cochair Olivia Derr. “The highlight of the Ball was the presentation of our Royal Court, though we introduced new concepts to raise funds that will benefit the Austin Symphony Orchestra,” said co-chair Julia Null. “The funds raised by the Jewel Ball support education programs of the Symphony that will reach

50,000 K-12 students over the next year.” The Jewel Ball also included presentation of the Junior Royal Court, comprised of 10th grade students serving as Belles and Beaux, seventh grade students serving as Maidens and Squires, and children five to eight years old serving as Trainbearers to the Royal Court.

2023 Jewel Ball Honorary Chairs

Frank and Melissa Jackson The Women’s Symphony League proudly recognizes Frank and Melissa Jackson as Honorary Chairs of the 68th Jewel Ball. Melissa joined the Women’s Symphony League in 1980, and Frank joined the Knights of the Symphony soon after. The Jacksons have a significant history with these organizations, where service is truly a family affair. Melissa and Frank’s son, Wroe Jackson, is a member of the Knights and has volunteered his support to emcee the Jewel Ball for the past 12 years. Of note, Melissa chaired the 29th Jewel Ball: “Once Upon a Time” in 1983, under the leadership of President Marion More, making this the 40th year since her role as Ball Chair. For decades, Melissa has served as the Bow Mistress for the Royal Court, teaching each of the ladies how to perform the beautiful full court bow, also known as the Texas Dip. The Jacksons believe that the members of the Women’s Symphony League are unsung heroes of musical education. Their countless hours of service in educating young people and introducing music at an early age are vital to a child’s development and well-being. Funds raised from the Jewel Ball enable the Austin Symphony to do just that – further an appreciation of music across our community at all ages.
