Thank you for your interest in the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and the great businesses and organizations that make up the fabric of this outstanding community.
Similar to the heroic response to the devastating tornadoes that wreaked havoc on the Tuscaloosa area ten years ago, this special community has again proven what it looks like to be resilient in the face of unprecedented adversity.
It goes without saying, but 2020 was a year like no other. None of us could have predicted the profound impact COVID-19 would have on our business community, local economy, and overall way of life. There was no “how to” guide for effectively navigating a pandemic so we were all left to just figure it out as it happened. The resulting, collective response from our citizens, though, is what I’m most proud of about this great community. Similar to the heroic response to the devastating tornadoes that wreaked havoc on the Tuscaloosa area ten years ago, this special community has again proven what it looks like to be resilient in the face of unprecedented adversity.
This organization is blessed by the leadership of a dynamic Board of Directors, the tireless work ethic and dedication of an exceptional professional staff, and, most importantly, for the remarkable businesses and organizations that make up the membership. Whether you’re a member, a new resident, or just a visitor passing through our community, we hope this Community Guide and Membership Directory serves as a valuable resource for you.

IF YOU’VE EVER BEEN TO A CHAMBER EVENT, IT’S LIKELY YOU’VE MET A CHAMBER AMBASSADOR.
This active group of business professionals volunteer their time and expertise, welcoming new members to the Chamber, and sharing ways to get the most out of their membership through an informal mentor relationship.
Ambassadors assist with ribbon cuttings and groundbreakings and can be spotted at Chamber events such as Business After Hours. A great networking experience for participants, the program is a creative resource for developing future Chamber leaders.
The next time you’re at a Chamber event, be sure and say hello to one of these great folks. Just look for the red jacket!
1. You’ve been involved with the Ambassador program for quite a while. What drew you to the program, and what keeps you engaged? I have been on the Ambassador Committee for approximately five (5) years. It has offered me opportunities I would have never received any other way. I get the opportunity to meet such a diverse group of business owners through the Chamber events and by having the privilege of attending Ribbon Cuttings for our new members. Being a Chamber Ambassador has enabled me to become a leader in the business community which has led to growth in the community and my current position at Alabama ONE.
2. The program clearly benefits participants; how can it also benefit their employers? The relationships we build through networking with fellow professionals may lead them to need your services in the future.
3. What types of businesses and individuals participate in the Ambassador program? Any business that is a member of the Chamber can have an individual be an Ambassador. The individuals could range from a being a handyman, personal trainer, attorney or in customer service.
4. What are some long-term takeaways for Ambassadors? Making connections, lasting relationship, being known in the community, learning more about your community and learning how to become a leader.

Benefits and perks. It’s often the reason behind the decision to join an organization. The Chamber offers all the benefits you’d expect from a business organization—networking opportunities, cost-effective employee training, listings in the business directory and on the website, member-to-member discounts, business advocacy at all levels of government, a professional staff at your service, and so much more
The Chamber offers all the benefits you’d expect from a business organization— networking opportunities, cost-effective employee training, listings in the business directory and on the website, member-to-member discounts, business advocacy at all levels of government, a professional staff at your service, and so much more.
However, the Chamber also delivers access to extremely valuable discounts through the Chamber Perks program, available at no extra cost to Chamber members. The Chamber has worked diligently to negotiate a savings program unlike any other, and as a result, have partnered with members to offer incredible prices on products and services.
The program includes our popular office supply discount partnership with Kyle Office Solutions, which can save you up to 65 percent on items you use every day. Through our partnership with Cintas, you can take advantage of special national contract pricing on facility services, uniform rental, and first aid and safety. Need merchant processing? Our friends at Payroc will provide memberonly discounted processing rates and world-class financial technology for your business.
The programs are already saving members enough money to pay for their membership, and then some. Chris Freeman, owner of Alpha-Lit Tuscaloosa, a company that sells lighted metal marquee letters and ships them all over the country, signed up for the Shipping Perks program through the Chamber’s partnership with UPS to offset his substantial shipping costs for the boxed letters, which weigh between 18 and 14 pounds each.
“I was already getting a little bit of a discount, but the UPS Chamber Perk is now giving me a discount of 33 percent,” Freeman says. The savings far exceed the cost of his Chamber membership and add value for his company, which employs seven people in Brent.
The Chamber team continues to look for ways to save you money and assist your company, adding a Workers Compensation Fund benefit in 2020, and paycheck advance and health insurance to the family of Chamber Perks in 2021.

A must-see for black heritage scholars and amateurs alike, the Murphy African-American Museum is located near downtown Tuscaloosa. The lifestyle of affluent black citizens in the early 1900s is depicted in this house built by William J. Murphy, the first black licensed mortician in Tuscaloosa. Changing exhibits of local, state and national achievements of African-Americans are offered. African-American contractors built the two story bungalow in the late 1920s with brick and hand-hewn sills salvaged from the old State Capital building in Tuscaloosa.

1. Recent months has been a challenging time for people who enjoy getting out and enjoying live music, festivals, and events. How are West Alabamians coping? I think we have all had to tap into our creative mindsets to learn how to cope with not being able to have large social gatherings. From virtual music events to “drive thru” bridal/baby showers and birthdays, it is amazing to see all of the various ideas that have come as a result of West Alabamians not letting the conditions of the pandemic get in the way of the things that are worth celebrating in life.
2. The team at Tuscaloosa Tourism & Sports has been second-to-none in supporting both businesses and organizations during the past year. What helped your team in focusing your efforts? With the strong leadership and willingness from our President & CEO, Don Staley, our organization was able to find creative ways to serve our community, while still following COVID 19 safety guidelines. We had a strong desire to assist our local hospitality industry, first responders, the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama’s Small Business Relief Fund, and The Bama Theatre, just to name a few. We could not have made this possible without a unified effort from having such great partnerships in our community.
3. As our community moves forward, what is your short-term goal for your organization for 2021? Industry data shows that sports tourism and leisure travel will be the first to return. We have started to implement a strategic marketing plan that will heavily target the leisure traveler within a three-to-five-hour drive radius from our area. We are also set to attend as many trade shows we can so that we stay in front of planners/event organizers in 2021 and remind them that Tuscaloosa is the perfect destination for every kind of traveler!
education and in assisting the preservation of our region’s historic artifacts. By maintaining the historic Queen City Park along the Black Warrior River, the Transportation Museum plans to advance knowledge and appreciation of Tuscaloosa’s local and regional history and natural resources through exhibits, museum educational programs and educational outreach efforts.
West Alabama has long been blessed with a thriving, vibrant, and engaged arts community. The community’s cultural assets are interwoven with its economic progress and continue to enrich the exceptional quality of life.
Not only does the area offer a wide range of musical, performing, and theatrical events, the community’s focus on public art can be seen throughout Tuscaloosa. Following the Chamber’s impactful Benchmarking Trips, members of the business and arts communities partnered to bring new pieces of public art to West Alabama for all to enjoy. Pieces include “Structural Mechanics,” by Ted Metz and “A Holt of Trees,” by Steve Davis, in downtown Tuscaloosa, “Kaleidoscope,” an installation at Snow Hinton Park, and the “red reveal” mural on University Boulevard by Florida muralist Jason Tetlak. While in the downtown Tuscaloosa area, be on the lookout for the Monster Takeover! Professional artists have recreated childrens’ drawings of monsters in small bronzes, which have been placed around the downtown area and the Tuscaloosa Riverwalk, so you can go on your own monster hunt!
For those inclined to hear music from all genres – artists from the Zac Brown Band to Odezsa – the city of Tuscaloosa’s outdoor amphitheater seats 7,470 and features state-of-theart sound, visual and electronic infrastructure, and amenities. It hosts many concerts and events plus serves as a platform for the cultural arts in the area.
The Arts Council and its member organizations provide a coordinated year-round calendar of events.
“The Arts Council plays a vital role in the West Alabama community at large, contributing to citizens’ quality of life through programming that reaches people of all ages, says Sandra Wolfe, Executive Director, The Arts Council of Tuscaloosa. “Our educational outreach has continued to expand through the years with more direct contact with local teachers, curriculum, and the overall classroom experience using the arts as a catalyst for growth. This, combined with newer programming such as the Public Art project, will help guarantee a bright economic future for our citizens and will be a magnet for those attempting to find a city and community where they can settle and flourish.”
The beautifully-restored 1930’s style Bama Theatre is a performing arts center in downtown Tuscaloosa that offers music, dance, theater, stage productions, film and educational programs. The facility is the only “atmospheric” style theatre in the state of Alabama.
The Dinah Washington Cultural Arts Center (CAC) opened in 2013 to bring the arts and cultural community together in downtown Tuscaloosa. It houses a black box theatre/workshop space which is perfect for family programming, educational opportunities and rehearsal space or community meeting space for rent. In addition, the CAC houses offices for local arts groups and gallery spaces for The University of Alabama.
A state-of-the-art teaching and performing theater, the Bean-Brown Theatre, is located on the campus of Shelton State Community College and is home to Theatre Tuscaloosa.
The Moody Music Building on the University of Alabama campus provides an annual calendar of cultural and entertainment experiences, featuring national and international performers and artists – from classical and opera to jazz and popular. The Moody Center is also home to the Tuscaloosa Symphony.
The University of Alabama Department of Theatre and Dance presents performances at the Gallaway Theatre, as well as plays in the Allen Bales Studio Theatre. The University’s Department of Dance offers unique performances throughout the year, including Dance Alabama in Morgan Auditorium.
Exhibits of student, faculty and internationally recognized visual artists are featured in the Sarah Moody Gallery of Art.
At the Kentuck Art Center, in historic downtown Northport, you’ll find working artists’ studios nestled around a courtyard beside a Gallery Shop. Monthly exhibitions are held. The Kentuck Festival of Arts, held in October, has become one of the South’s most prestigious and recognized arts festivals.
As Alabama’s fifth largest city, Tuscaloosa – and neighboring Northport – serves as the regional hub for many activities. A popular destination for shopping, entertainment, and dining, visitors can find a range of options in the community, no matter their taste.
Shopping districts such as Midtown Village, Legacy Park, the Downtown Business District, and Historic Downtown Northport offer a wide variety of big box stores, specialty shops, and boutiques sure to please the most discerning shopper.
Retail development is a high priority here in West Alabama, and the Chamber has partnered with the City of Tuscaloosa to not only coordinate economic development efforts, but to assist with recruiting and retaining great businesses you’re sure to love.
Consider yourself a foodie? You’re in luck. We’re fortunate to have fresh seafood from our catfish ponds and from the nearby
Gulf Coast, and excellent produce from our local farmers’ markets. We have excellent farm-to-table options.
There’s no better place to find a taste of the South than Tuscaloosa County’s soul food restaurants and barbecue joints. However, a gourmet burger, upscale fine dining options and everything in between can be found in our chic downtown eateries and along the scenic Black Warrior River.
No matter what you’re in the mood to try, dining in Tuscaloosa County is a delicious experience.
1. Downtown Tuscaloosa is a vibrant, lively city center. What about downtown makes it special to the community? Downtown is special because of several reasons: It’s centrally located and close to campus. It’s made up of locally owned businesses: retail shops, restaurants and professional businesses, these are people from our community. We mirror the image of what we want this area to look like.
2. Most communities have faced challenges in the past year, but West Alabama has come together. How do you think supporting each other has helped small businesses? Small business is the cornerstone of any community. I’ve lived here my entire life, when the rest of the world has experienced hardships, somehow we are in this bubble and the pressure doesn’t feel as great here. It’s because WE support small businesses! Our local government and The Chamber were giants in helping and leading during the pandemic.
3. What would you like to see moving forward in 2021? Moving forward, I would like to see more emphasis on supporting small/local businesses. Continue to create better paying jobs, to keep students in our community versus when they graduate, they pack up and leave and just getting back to normal!

Charitable non-profits exemplify the best in all of us, and West Alabamians are well-known for lending a helping hand. On any given day, you can find volunteers serving hot meals at one of our soup kitchens. You might find a group collecting school supplies or nonperishable food. Perhaps you are part of a rally at work in support of the United Way of West Alabama and its 26 partner service agencies. “United Way of West Alabama’s 26 partner agencies impact 1 out 4 individuals in West Alabama and rely heavily on support from the local community. Whether it’s corporate philanthropy or individual donors and volunteers, local support allows these nonprofits to focus on their mission and provide valuable services to those in need as opposed to directing their efforts on fund-raising,” says Jackie Wuska, UWWA President & CEO
You might be volunteering with Community Service Programs of West Alabama, which is dedicated to improving the quality of life for low-income and vulnerable populations. In the event of natural disasters, you will see the Tuscaloosa community join forces to repair the damage and go beyond to help those affected. Organizations such as Temporary Emergency Services, who help families and individuals in crisis situations year-round, are particularly important in times of great need.
The Community Foundation of West Alabama focuses on growth and stewardship of permanent charitable resources and is a catalyst for improvement in the community, supporting a wide range of non-profit organizations. Charitable gifts to the foundation fulfill the community’s most critical needs. During the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the CFWA partnered with the Chamber and the City of Tuscaloosa to establish the Small Business Relief Fund, which dispersed more than 1.25 million in funding to 305 small businesses across West Alabama.
Many nonprofit service agencies serve the area and are supported by caring and generous citizens who know the importance of a strong social service network in the community. There are countless situations where your life could be enriched by one of Tuscaloosa’s social service agencies.
“When you donate or volunteer for a nonprofit, you are doing yourself and the charity a service. It improves overall mental health, gives a sense of purpose and generally provides a sense of happiness to YOU. For the nonprofit, any amount of funds or time you are able to give goes an extraordinary way in being able to provide services the community needs on a very limited budget and staff,” says Wuska.
1. While always a force in the community, the non-profit organizations in West Alabama were instrumental in helping those in need recently. Why was it important for non-profits to go above and beyond? During difficult times, our production is often described as “above and beyond” but really, this is our daily modus operandi, at all times. Most non-profits fulfill unmet basic needs and it was important that we developed ways to continue providing services, despite the medical climate.
2. Non-profit organizations often work with small staffs and budgets. How have those involved with these organizations demonstrated commitment in challenging times? Staff and volunteers have shown commitment through continued hard work, maintaining professionalism while showing compassion and empathy; and sacrifice of time further exemplifying commitment to the missions of the organizations.
3. How do you feel our non-profits will continue to make an impact in the community going forward? We will continue providing top-notch services through innovative and creative measures, while maintaining clients’ and staff/volunteers’ safety in the forefront of service implementation.
Since 1871, the Tuscaloosa County School System has provided educational opportunities for students that currently number approximately 18,700. The system’s facilities include 34 schools: two primary schools, seventeen elementary schools, eight middle schools, six high schools, and one resource center for students with special needs.
The mission of the Tuscaloosa County School System is to educate and empower all students to be college and career ready graduates – prepared to make positive contributions to our global society. Our beliefs are:
■ High expectations are necessary to achieve goals and expand opportunities for all.
■ Education is a shared responsibility that positively impacts the quality of life.
■ Equity, fairness, accountability, and fiscal responsibility are foundations of our decision-making. Safe, well-equipped, student-centered schools support student success.
■ Diversity and individual learning needs are respected, included, and valued.
During its most recent district accreditation process, AdvancEd commended the system for having a “laser-like focus” on the instructional program. The review noted that the system makes effective analysis and use of data, is committed to curriculum alignment, revision, and works to recruit and develop a high quality professional staff.
Part of that commitment to the instructional program includes the school system’s active participation in the Alabama Reading Initiative as well as the State’s Math, Science and Technology Initiative. In additional, the system received an A+ College Ready Grant, which is designed to increase Advanced Placement courses in key subject areas of math and English and to increase the number of students who earn qualifying scores on AP exams.
A virtual learning program has been developed and launched in an effort to meet the diverse needs of students. Through the virtual learning program, students may revisit standards and content; recover lost credit; obtain advanced credit; and also maintain pace with class work in the event an illness or accident prevents them from attending school on a regular basis. Enrollment in this innovative and flexible program is on the rise.
The Tuscaloosa County School System also has an active Adopt-A-School program, participates in the Parent Teacher Leadership Academy, and enjoys a host of partnerships with post-secondary, business, and community organizations.
Dr. Keri Johnson Superintendent, Tuscaloosa County School System
1. School systems have made rapid adjustments to make the best choices for children in their community. How was your system able to successfully accommodate the needs of your wide variety of students? It has been the dedication of our faculty and staff that has made this school year possible. The pandemic caused us to quickly rethink how we deliver instruction to our students. Our system gave students and families the choice of on-campus or remote instruction, depending on what best fit their individual situation. While the challenges have been great, we’ve learned some valuable lessons over the past year. But it has simply
been the dedication and determination of our educators that has allowed TCSS to continue serving our students over the past year.
2. What has TCSS gained from this experience that will be impactful moving forward? There’s still much to learn and refine, but we have learned a tremendous amount about best practices for how technology can enhance learning for students. We will continue refining and implementing technology as we move forward. At the same time, the past year has reinforced what we already knew, as far as how meaningful in-person, teacher-led instruction is for students.
3. What’s the biggest short-term goal for the system in 2021? We have a number of goals ahead for this year, and as we look toward the upcoming school year. However, one of the most immediate is having a successful conclusion to a year that has presented so many challenges, yet provided so much growth. We also look forward to safely celebrating some of the important year-end milestones that we didn’t get to experience last year.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools are home to more than 11,000 students, from pre-k to high school. The facilities include 21 schools: 11 elementary schools, 4 middle schools, one K-8 school, 3 high schools and 2 program sites dedicated to specialty education: one for students receiving alternative education, and a career technical facility for grades 9-12.
TCS has a well-rounded academic program designed to prepare students for college or career. From Pre-K to magnet programs, from performing arts programs to an innovative career technical program, there is something for all learning styles. The system’s Pre-K program has doubled in size over the past 10 years and now stands at 34 classrooms serving students systemwide. From dual enrollment/dual credit programs with area universities, to robust performing arts programs, to hands-on STEM/STEAM learning, TCS students are exposed to many pathways to academic success. The system’s graduation rate is 86 percent and rising.
The Tuscaloosa City Schools also has a strong commitment to professional development. Of the more than 760 certified staff members, 68 percent hold advanced degrees. TCS is dedicated to growing accomplished teaching through individualized professional learning opportunities, including
1. Students, parents, and faculty alike have faced a challenging environment recently. How was your system able to quickly adapt to provide the best learning experience possible? We are fortunate to have so many dedicated and talented educators who were willing to assist in whatever ways were needed to support students and their families. As I think back to the early days of the pandemic, teachers were there to serve meals and connect with families. These experiences allowed them to understand what our families faced as we quickly designed and implemented an at-home learning program. Their creativity and enthusiasm for the work made the transition easier in the early days. However, as time wore on, it has been their commitment and expertise to continuously rise to the occasion to meet the needs of students. The work hasn’t been easy, but it has been vitally important. I cannot thank them enough for their professionalism during this time. That said, we are looking forward to a return to the pre-pandemic days of school and educating students five days a week this fall.
2. What is one lesson you have learned that you will take going forward? What has become increasingly evident is the power of a high-qualified teacher connecting with students to do this work. The role of a teacher cannot be understated. Through it all, we have used teacher voice as part of our decision-making to provide a safe and robust learning environment in spite of the pandemic.
3. Is there a short-term goal you are focusing on for 2021? We know that some students may have seen learning loss this year, that’s why we’re gearing up for a return to learning in the fall. We don’t have a moment to waste.
For TCS, that starts with our popular summer learning program, which is being offered to families free this year, thanks to CARES Act funding. The early days of this program were supported by the Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama and helped establish its credibility in the community. When students return in the fall, families can expect to see five-days of robust instruction each week.
the development of a comprehensive National Board Certification support system.
A long range strategic plan includes designing and delivering an innovative curriculum that ensures success and achievement for all students; recruit, retain and reward talented employees to serve students; and design and operate facilities that have optimal learning environments. TCS is continuously working to prepare students for success in college or career, and in life!

The area is experiencing solid economic growth, making West Alabama the perfect place for a business to grow and succeed.
West Alabama is home to responsive, well-managed governments that deliver the leadership needed to move the region forward. Elected officials in
Tuscaloosa, Northport, and Tuscaloosa County emphasize a strategic, combined approach to governing.
In 2019, the City of Tuscaloosa enacted Elevate Tuscaloosa, a communitydriven process for strategically investing in education, cultural arts, tourism, parks, recreation, and connectivity.
In 2019, the City of Tuscaloosa enacted Elevate Tuscaloosa, a community-driven process for strategically investing in education, cultural arts, tourism, parks, recreation, and connectivity. In 2020, the City recognized the impact of COVID-19, and initiated Restart Tuscaloosa, a $15
million investment in public safety, neighborhoods, small businesses, experiences, and local agencies. Included in Restart Tuscaloosa was $1 million for the Small Business Relief Fund, a fund developed by the Chamber in partnership with the Community Foundation of West Alabama and the City of Tuscaloosa to aid small businesses impacted by the pandemic. The fund aided more than 300 small businesses in West Alabama and disbursed more than $1.25 million in funding.
West Alabama has a highlydiversified base of companies and offers an environment for companies looking to grow in a variety of sectors. These companies benefit greatly from the talented workforce produced by our area colleges and universities.
The EDGE Incubator and Accelerator is a perfect example of a resource available to growing businesses and startups alike. Resources from the university, the city, and the chamber support a vibrant ecosystem of entrepreneurship, business growth, and personal enterprise in a 26,000-squarefoot facility designed for collaboration and innovation.
The EDGE offers businesses a place to work, while also hosting workshops, forums and gatherings for the entrepreneurial community. The facility is but one example of the focus on an innovative business climate and knowledge-based economy.
Anchored by a rich history in manufacturing, logistics, business services, automotive, and more, the Greater Tuscaloosa area is poised to become a leader in the areas of aviation
aerospace; athletic and sport technology; cyber security; life research; retail and commercial; transportation; and water resources.
Business and industry in Tuscaloosa County continue to thrive on diversity. With the University of Alabama, Stillman College, Shelton State Community College, two large public school systems and a number of private schools, education is big business in Tuscaloosa County. The University of Alabama alone has an economic impact on the Tuscaloosa Metro Area that in the billions of dollars, with the average impact of a home football game averaging close to $20 million.
Healthcare is also a major component of West Alabama’s component, and a large employer. DCH Health System has two hospitals; DCH Regional Medical Center and Northport Medical Center. The Veterans Administration Hospital is a large complex, and Bryce Hospital provides in-patient psychiatric services.
Approximately 30 percent of the nonagricultural workforce has jobs in government, healthcare and education. Sixteen percent of the 95,000 nonagricultural workforce finds itself in manufacturing. Those manufacturers include BFGoodrich, Nucor Steel, JVC, Johnson Controls, ZF Chassis Systems, Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Hunt Refining, Westervelt and many others. Automotive, electronics, plastic injection molding, steel, wood products, food products and chemicals are just some of those manufacturing concerns whose marketplace is the world.
Tuscaloosa is also proud of its homegrown businesses. Large companies such as Randall-Reilly, Fitts Industries and Phifer Wire Products were born and raised in Tuscaloosa County and are prospering today. Construction, transportation, finance, insurance and real estate also thrive in Tuscaloosa County.
Our retail trade is growing and is concentrated in the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport mostly, where more than
20 percent of the workforce sells everything from specialty items to chic clothes to outdoor gear and sport utility vehicles. We are fortunate to have an excellent mix of big box retailers, unique boutiques, and “mom-and-pop” stores from which to choose.
The small businesses – the backbone of the economy and close to 90 percent of the Chamber’s membership – find Tuscaloosa County to be an outstanding investment opportunity for small business development and new business startups. In fact, the TuscaloosaBirmingham corridor consistently ranks in the top 20 markets in the U.S. for entrepreneurial success.
Our strong major banks, credit unions and other financial institutions have combined deposits of several billion dollars and represent an exceptional base for meeting the needs of an expanding economy and growing community.
The Chamber assists with strategic planning, technology development, training, site assistance, marketing and other business-related initiatives. The Chamber has also been charged with assisting with Tuscaloosa City Hall’s economic development functions.
The Chamber’s Diverse Business Council (DBC) works to foster growth and competitiveness of minority-owned
businesses in West Alabama. It provides a network of support for these businesses, facilitates mixers, workshops and other educational opportunities to improve business skills/knowledge, and seeks funding sources. The committee also serves as a minority prospect base and recruiting source to fill leadership roles within the Chamber and other civic organizations.
The Tuscaloosa/Birmingham region is among the best places in the nation to start and grow a business, according to numerous economic development and business sources including Forbes and Kiplinger’s Personal Finance magazines. Tuscaloosa County and its surrounding area offer all of the components necessary for a business to succeed and grow.
Even as retail and other sectors continue to grow and thrive, city leaders have begun to move the community toward an experience economy. As residence and visitors alike have begun to express interest in events and activities the whole family can enjoy, partnerships have formed to bring in revenue- and tax-generating events, including the Tuscaloosa Regional Air Show, the USA Triathlon Collegiate Club National Championships, and a host of festivals and music events.
Since its inception in 2015, West Alabama Works has focused on recruiting, training, and, more importantly, empowering a skilled workforce by collaborating with area businesses and industry leaders to increase awareness of our regional workforce needs. Workforce development starts with the idea that everyone – every job seeker, student, teacher, employee, and citizen – in West Alabama has a role that directly affects the region’s viability. West Alabama Works actively seeks to change preconceived notions about the different pathways to success. There are many ways someone can be successful in the community – some roads lead to college while others lead to certifications and a direct pipeline into the workforce, but all roads to success can provide happiness, purpose, and outstanding quality of life. To attain this goal, it takes a strategic whole community approach to strengthen our region –individuals, businesses and industry partners, educators and administrators, government officials, and all other players need to buy into this effort to affect change in the most dramatic way.
Initiatives like the Educator Workforce Academy, a one-year program designed to empower our leaders in education with knowledge of real-time workforce needs, encourage a sustainable K-12 pipeline to well-paying careers in West Alabama. Educators representing all 9 Region 3 counties have graduated from the program and are now better equipped to explain different career pathways to their students. Additionally, West Alabama Works supports implementing a comprehensive career technical curriculum in school systems. To directly engage with students, an annual event called Worlds Of Work (WOW) has been held since 2015 and showcases the key industries available right here in West Alabama. The WOW event specifically targets 8th graders and focuses on educating them about their potential career technical education options during their high school studies. Students and their parents/guardians will navigate the different worlds through a game-like interface of a virtual exploration platform scheduled to
launch in the spring. This platform will continue as a companion site to future in-person WOW events. Additionally, a virtual reality component will be added to the school outreach program this year to further illustrate the availability of fun and interesting jobs in the region. For older students who have already chosen a career-technical pathway, West Alabama Works offers WOW 2.0 as a channel to connect directly with regional industry partners for potential careers after graduation. Businesses are highly encouraged to get involved in both WOW and WOW 2.0 if they want to make a huge impact in our youth’s lives and reach their future workforce.
Providing resources to job seekers and the underemployed is also a major focus of West Alabama Works.
Providing resources to job seekers and the underemployed is also a major focus of West Alabama Works. By connecting with this population wherever they might be on their career journey, West Alabama Works can guarantee that they have the resources to succeed, whether that is further training and education or simply the opportunity to interview with the right position. With the Career Connect system launch, our workforce center navigators have communicated with job seekers via more than 72K text messages, 500 phone calls, and 12K chat messages in the past year, yielding an abundance of connections and placements. West Alabama Works also connects with job seekers via in-person outreach events throughout the region. In the span of two months, our team traveled over 400 miles, hosting pop-up outreach events across the region.
West Alabama
Works takes satisfaction in being an industrydriven model that actively engages with business at all levels.
West Alabama Works takes satisfaction in being an industrydriven model that actively engages with business at all levels. Through meetings and site visits, we keep the conversation going to connect the dots better. Currently, West Alabama Works focuses on collaborating with West Alabama’s most significant industries: automotive, construction, healthcare, manufacturing, and professional services. They are the backbone of our region and should be a point of pride. These relationships with business directly influenced our main goal: to shine a light on what makes West Alabama great and continue enhancing our region through education, recruitment, and, most importantly, empowerment of our greatest strength - our people.
