mission statement The Wesley School builds confidence and encourages independence through a challenging academic program that stretches each student to reach the highest level of individual achievement within a supportive, nurturing environment.

Wesley cultivates in students strong creative, physical, and spiritual foundations to prepare them to be productive and respectful contributors to a global society.

To Our Wesley Community This was a truly historic year for Wesley, and I am thrilled to have been a part of it! We saw several significant accomplishments—not the least of which being the opening of our new Arts and Administration Building. Starting off the school year with a fabulous ribbon cutting set an amazing tone. I’m still finding confetti! We also unveiled a new Long Range Plan which will provide us with a guided path on which to set our sights for years to come. Lastly, our Annual Giving campaign this year highlighted Athletics and Imaginative Play. The education of a Wesley student is more than just what happens in the classroom, and this year we were able to give the students new options and opportunities to expand their education through play. I’d like to thank each and every one of you for supporting us with your gifts as we develop creative ways to further engage our students in their Wesley experience.

Over the last four years, The Board of Trustees has subscribed to Robert Bade-Powell’s advice and left our school a little better than we found it. It was my privilege to serve at the chair of the Board during this time and then pass the baton with good faith in the future of Wesley.

While the chair has changed, the mission of The Board of Trustees remains the same — to protect and promote the long term interests of The Wesley School. To that end, the Board adopted a new long range plan last spring. To develop and finely tune this plan, we had a committee comprised of trustees, school administration and faculty, and parent representatives working over a period of two school years. The four pillars of the plan — Ignite, Inspire, Include and Invest — provide a road map to ensure our school is positioned for an ever brighter future.

With the Board teaming with John Walter and the administrators and faculty, The Wesley School is building on excellence.

spotlight Athletics & Imaginative Play Do you remember the joy of childhood when you could run outside and join a pick-up football game with your neighborhood buddies, chase after grasshoppers in the field, play stick ball until somebody broke a window, ride your bikes down to the creek to catch frogs, or spend the afternoon roller-skating with your best friend? Those are some of the fondest memories of being a child back in the day. No computers, no video games, and movies were a special trip to the theater.

The Wesley School has not forgotten these joys. In this modern world, children still need a safe place to run, jump, climb, scramble, and be children. We know our children love this because every year our field is used so much, the grass is completely worn off. Every summer we plant new grass; we carefully rope off the field to let it take root, water it, feed it, gently mow it, and by winter, we are left with bare patches of earth and muddy children with smiles on their faces. That is one of the reasons this year our focus for our Annual Giving campaign was Athletics and Imaginative Play. This summer thanks in part to support from Annual Giving, we were able to replace the field sod with durable turf. We now have a soft, springy field for our children to practice soccer, build forts, do cartwheels, tumble and run.

Thanks to your generous support of Annual Giving, we are able to enrich the outdoor experience for all our children.

A

nnual Giving is essential to the ongoing success of our school and currently makes up approximately 4% of our budget. Funds raised are primarily unrestricted and go toward the general operation of The Wesley School. Annual Giving impacts all students and faculty every day in every way. In 2016-17, our Annual Giving campaign highlighted Athletics and Imaginative Play to build understanding, appreciation and support for these key areas of a Wesley experience.

In 2016-17 Wesley achieved 100% participation from our Parents, Trustees, Faculty, Staff, and Administrators. Our consistently high levels of participation say a lot about our Wesley community. We care deeply for our students, our community and the strength of our school. Grandparents, alumni families, foundations, corporate matching gifts and friends of Wesley made up the remaining total contribution of $385,000. Thanks to the generosity of our community, Wesley was able to enhance our programming and enrich the experience for all our students.

A

burst of colorful confetti marked the opening of our incredible new Arts and Administration building on a beautiful September morning. The 5,500 square foot, two-story building will be the new home to our stellar language arts program in the Rafalski Family classroom and our history program whose second story windows look out on a decidedly “Florentine” view of the bell tower and red tiled rooftops. The Green Family multi-media art studio is furnished to promote flexibility in room configuration, easily housing a painting class one period and a robotics lesson after school. Construction includes the welcoming Hoffman Family reception area and a new teacher work room and lounge to further promote collaboration and creativity among our faculty, staff and administration.

Our engraved brick pathway is a wonderful example of our community coming together to create something larger than each individual could achieve on their own, and a reminder that at our foundation are the many families past and present who make the Wesley experience available for generations to come.
