Wesleyan Wolf Jr. Players present:

LAW & ORDER: Nursery Rhyme Unit

Law and Order: Nursery Rhyme Unit By Jim and Jane Jeffries Produced by special arrangement with Pioneer Drama Service, Inc., Englewood, California

Director’s Note WARNING: The show which you are about to watch offers no life lessons, no hidden depths to plumb, and absolutely no content worthy of literary or theatrical analysis. None of the characters have anything remotely important or sensible to say, and some of them are downright SILLY. If you exit the theater RIGHT NOW, you’ll probably make it safely to your vehicle before the next grueling hour of egg-related puns ensues. What? You’re still here? Oh, we’re glad! While the directors, cast, and crew of this play can’t offer you much in the way of profound content, we believe you’re in for something even better: some serious heart medicine. Proverbs 17:22 tells us: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine, but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” I don’t know about you, but I’ve felt dried out at times during the past eighteen months. Aspects of our lives that once were simple are now fraught with complexity. As we seek to serve God in the desert places, it’s hard to imagine that God wants us to be merry. We usually think of merriment as a byproduct of happy circumstances, but the Scriptures give us a different view: joy as a spiritual discipline. In Nehemiah 8:10, the reluctant leader exhorts the Children of Israel to put away their sorrow, saying, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” In the wake of the daunting task of rebuilding and defending Jerusalem, God uses Nehemiah to speak of joy – not as a reactionary happiness, but as a diligent practice. Not only does our Father want us to be joyful, but He bids us rely upon joy in Him as the source of our strength. In John 15:11 (after the teaching of the True Vine parable) Jesus says, “These things I have spoken to you that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.” Christ wants us to be a joy-filled people. This joy isn’t dependent upon the perfection of outside circumstances; it is a free and undeserved gift from our loving God. Christ with us, Christ IN us, is JOY. As we laugh together for the next hour, let us give thanks to our Creator for the gift of a merry heart. If you share even a fraction of the joy we’ve had in preparing this show, you’ll leave this place having taken a dose of very good medicine, indeed. Jenn Jordan Middle School Director

Production Notes Little Bo Peep (abandonment issues): “Little Bo Peep has lost her sheep And doesn’t know where to find them…”. Mary (neurotic, thinks she’s being followed): Mary had a little lamb; its fleece was white as snow, And everywhere that Mary went, the lamb was sure to go.” Jack (low self-esteem, obsessed with proving himself): “Jack be nimble, jack be quick; Jack jump over the candle stick.” Georgie (does not respect personal boundaries): “Georgie Porgie, Puddin’ and Pie, Kissed the girls and made them cry.” Little Boy Blue (can’t hold down a job, depressed): “Where is the boy who looks after the sheep? He’s under the haystack, fast asleep.” Jack and Mrs. Sprat (a couple with some very unhealthy ideas about nutrition): “Jack Sprat could eat no fat; his wife could eat no lean, And so betwixt the two of them, they licked the platter clean.” When you really think about some of our most beloved nursery rhymes, you have to wonder how ANY of these characters could function in society. Their respective rhymes have really set them up for some serious issues! It’s no wonder they end up seeking the help of Dr. Foster, who runs the L.O.S.E.R.S. support group (Love. Optimism. Self-Esteem. Respect. Support.)! Even Beautiful Swan isn’t truly happy with her lot (Can you imagine actually having been named “Ugly Duckling”?). If you’d like a deeper dive into the backstories of many of tonight’s colorful characters, check out their full stories! We owe these misfits a lot – not only for their catchy rhymes, but for the excellently unexpected way in which they’re woven together in this story of an egg, a wall, and murder most fowl.
