When I was 14 years old, I auditioned for a summer production of Hello, Dolly! The entire process was very exciting for me as I had spent my middle school years attending Pueblo, Colorado’s Summer Musicals as an audience member just waiting for the day that I could audition and be a part of the cast. By then, I already knew that I wanted to pursue theatre in some form. After being cast in the show, the directors asked if I’d be willing to play a very particular role in the ensemble. The role was one-half of the dancing horse that they planned to add to the musical numbers. That’s right folks, my major musical debut was that of a horse’s rear end in Hello, Dolly! It marked the beginning of my onstage career, and, quite honestly, I couldn’t have been happier because I loved performing. It was definitely a time in my life where I aspired to seize any opportunity that came my way because I was just so thrilled to be a part of something so special.

I didn’t choose Hello, Dolly! as our winter musical because I did the show in high school. I chose it because of its undeniably encouraging theme of ‘seizing the day.’ Our story is riddled with characters who are trying to figure out what’s next for them. They have one of two choices to make. They can remain where they are or choose to step out in faith and face the adventure of life head on. Our main character, Dolly Levi, not only is the catalyst for many of the characters seizing the day, but she is bold enough to take her own advice. She firmly decides that she will not stand by and watch the “parade pass her by.” Her vibrant and witty urgency is very convincing, and we hope that she—and the other characters—inspire you to seize your own day, not let the parade pass you by, and actively seek life.

Two well-known verses come to my mind when thinking about what it means to actively seek life. The first is Psalm 118:24: “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it.” It is so reassuring to know that we can seize our day because the Lord Himself made it for us to seize. We can be glad in the process of living it out— good or bad—because He handcrafts our days for our good and growth. Sometimes it’s hard to see that. Sometimes it’s hard to rejoice amidst the little intricacies that make up our day. Nevertheless, God wants us to have this approach because He has created a very specific parade route for each of us to walk with Him. In Romans 8:28, it says, “And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose.” While God understands the scope of His big purpose as it pertains to the entire world, He is a relationship-driven God who cares about our trajectory as individuals. He cares about the choices we make and what we choose to do with our time. He cares about our talents and gifts. He cares about how we view Him and where we’ll end up. Not knowing our personal purpose can be very daunting. This is why we must remind ourselves that we have a God who knows what it is already, a God who has cared from the start, and a God who has rescued us through His Son, Jesus Christ, so that we can confidently accomplish that purpose without fear or anxiety.

Placing our faith in the Creator of Days and Establisher of Purposes will undoubtedly spur us to seize each day unto Him and to rejoice that we get to be on the parade route fulfilling our purpose with a King who loves us, cherishes us, and wants us there with Him.

Production Notes

Choosing to do a musical that takes place in the 1890s brings about its own special history lesson. The cast, crew, and directing staff have grown to have a special appreciation for the oddities of the Victorian Era. It has been a delight to compare the differences between then and now. We hope you enjoy our list of bizarre Victorian facts and comparisons, as follows:

The Victorian Era spans the lifetime of Queen Victoria which was from 1837-1901. Since televisions and movie theatres were not invented yet, people fed their need for entertainment by attending the theater or music hall. Nothing was recorded. It was all live. Congratulations! You’re practicing this right now!

For the middle and upper classes, the way people would meet their significant other was by pre-arranged marriages, by attending dances, or by hiring a matchmaker—like Dolly Levi. This is a stark contrast to swiping right nowadays…or is it? #Match.com

Victorians were fans of body modifications such as using a corset or buying hair extensions to achieve the Gibson Girl look. Gentlemen sported pomade slicked back hair and grand mustaches. Also, tattoos were on trend for criminal and royal alike. While there was no plastic surgery, they did alter their physical appearance for aesthetic purposes and enjoyed some ink art like we do today.

Many families took family photos together particularly if a loved one passed away. In this case, they would all dress in their mourning black, gather around the deceased, and pose for a family picture. This was a way to capture their loved ones in memory even if they were already dead. Can you imagine what they would do with the technology of the selfie?

Victorians were fascinated with world-wide exhibits and exposure. Many people made the effort to go off on explorations or to bring rare artifacts—like mummies—to the public for display. That sounds so much more exciting than just Googling something!
