WESLEYAN SOFTBALL’S FUTURE IS LOOKING BRIGHT!

Ken Carlyle, New Varsity Softball Coach

After a successful baseball career that spanned high school, college (University of Mississippi), and professional baseball (Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves organizations), Coach Ken Carlyle had little experience with softball. That is, until one of his daughters expressed interest in the sport

and he began coaching her teams when she was a youngster. Being a part of her softball journey gave Carlyle a passion for helping female athletes excel in the sport. Today, Carlyle owns the "Next Top Recruits" organization which fields 15 softball teams, among other sports, serving girls aged 10-16 years.

WESLEYAN SOFTBALL, CONTINUED When Dr. David Ray, Head of School, and Joe Woodward, Athletic Director, talked with Carlyle about the Wesleyan softball coaching position, Coach Carlyle believed "it was a great fit.”

Ray added, “With Coach Carlyle and Coach Cecil on board-and what will be a new home field-we are excited about what’s ahead for Wesleyan softball.”

As a strong believer, Carlyle has high goals for the team but wants to make sure their foundation is solid. Carlyle explained, “We’re looking to grow these young ladies in their faith, as players, and in their game. We also want them to have fun!” Alongside Carlyle will be Wesleyan softball alumna and 2nd grade teacher, Cayla Cecil serving as pitching coach. Carlyle says he’s looking forward to building on the success that the Wesleyan program has had through the years. He believes Cecil will be a strong support as a coach and as someone who knows the program well.

New Softball Field and dugouts under construction!

This fall, Carlyle has been pleased with the turnout he's seen with voluntary practices for middle school girls at the Centennial Campus. They’ve spent time on the basics with some girls, while helping others hone their skills. In Spring 2023, Wesleyan’s varsity softball team will enjoy playing on a new home field on our Sandy Ridge Campus. After breaking ground last spring, the field is taking shape quickly. Currently, construction is underway on the home and visitor dugouts (see pictures above and on right). Fencing and stadium seating will follow. According to Dr. Ray, the field will be a smaller version of the existing baseball field, adjacent to the pavilion and upper parking area.
