Welcome to The New Wolsey Theatre’s annual PULSE Fringe festival, your opportunity to see the newest and the most cutting edge work from the UK and beyond!

Not only is PULSE a great opportunity for you Festival Freddies to explore new cultures and experiences, but it’s also an incredibly valuable chance to socialise with like minded festival folk!

This year sees even more innovative and exciting venues added to the list, with theatre in a bed-sit, a car park and a shipping container! We’re also showcasing a selection of the newest work from the region in the Escalator Weekend, which opens the festival and we’re making it even easier for you hardcore followers to see more work with the introduction of the Festival Pass.

Escalator has been supporting performing artists and companies from the East of England since 2003 to investigate their practice and undertake a creative journey. The programme identifies, nurtures and invests in talented practitioners across art-forms who want to develop artistically and establish a market place for their work.

Escalator Performing Arts provides artists with time and space to play, test ideas and explore new directions. The emphasis is not on a final ‘product’ but the ‘process’ encouraging artists to collaborate, take risks and embrace mistakes.

The programme responds to the individual; offering learning plans, one-on-one mentorin g from practicing artists, artist led training, links to useful networks and platform opportunities to present ideas and work in progress. Highlights include live artist Holly Darton making the shift to become a solo practitioner and urban dance artist and Tom Dale, trying a series of ‘happenings’ in club spaces.

Escalator East to Edinburgh prepares artists and companies for the Edinburgh Festivals and beyond. It aims to make the exhausting Edinburgh experience more enjoyable and less isolating by providing press and PR, promoter liaison, marketing and a creative community of support up at the Fringe. The programme has previously championed Hoipolloi, NIE and Gecko and in 2010 we are delighted to be taking over 20 diverse shows up to the Festival, 8 of which you can see in PULSE look for this logo on the following pages:

Using the myth of Orpheus and Eurydice as its starting point this theatrical poem deals with love and loss, courage and cowardice, overwhelming passion and violent grief.

Orpheus and Eurydice are the golden couple of their generation, she conquering the catwalks with her extraordinary beauty and he setting stadiums on fire with his magical music. Their wedding is set to be the hottest ticket of the twenty first century. But when Eurydice is killed by an obsessive stalker Orpheus’ grief is uncontainable. He sets off to the underworld to bring his wife back from the dead and return with her to the land of the living.

Powerhouse long and mesmerising look at the daily entrance rituals in the hall of one of the country’s most venerable institutions, in a phenomenological take on our written legacy.

This time-lapse film was shot at Cambridge University Library (copyright library built by Giles Gilbert Scott, architect of Bankside Power station and the red telephone box) during the 8-week performance of a live word association game. A sequence of 485 dominant words (selected from over 7000 on-site and online submissions) appears on a light box in the hall, and on a spoken soundtrack, and takes the audience on an associative journey from Powerhouse to Albatross, via Tom and Jerry, methadone and Albania.

DANCE3 A triple bill from the new wave of dance makers

Devised, choreographed and performed by: Darren Ellis A solo for Darren and his drumsticks, this is an exploration of practice and the quest for perfection. Just as a drummer must lock and focus his co-ordination, measuring out a rhythm to entice people to dance, a simple rhythm can inspire armies to move. When the sticks take control that’s when the trouble starts.

By: Laïla Diallo in collaboration with Theo Clinkard Canadian born, Bristol based choreographer Laïla Diallo first came to prominence as a dancer with Wayne McGregor’s Random Dance before attracting attention with her own choreographic work. Here, in collaboration with Theo Clinkard, she creates physical narratives of togetherness and evokes shifting landscapes of distance and closeness.

Appel is a trio based on the live interaction between two dancers and a musician playing Bansuri (flute) and tabla and inspired in equal parts by B-boying and capoeira.

A BLANK CANVAS Foyer Installation by Heather Eddington Blends the mediums of dance, film and animation into a dancefilm installation. The dancers vividly recount their individual journeys and personal stories; nostalgically humorous and at times strikingly truthful but always intriguingly beautiful.

In 2009 Bryony had her very first STI test and found out she had a very common sexual disease. In the same month, whilst moving house, she found a box of letters, emails, love mementos and hate mail from a myriad of previous partners. Not one for looking back, Bryony was faced with the arduous task of re-tracing her sexual footsteps to see where she may have contracted her little problem. This performance is about her journey… along the way she will reminisce, tell the forbidden truths and in some cases apologise wholeheartedly for the things she has done in the name of sexual conquest and love.

This work has been supported by The Junction and Arts Council Escalator Scheme. Sex Idiot will be part of the East to Edinburgh 2010 programme funded by the Arts Council.

Invisible explores the contemporary phenomenon of mass migration to Britain highlighting questions around 21st century mobility, international migration, immigration, cultural, national and personal identity.

A work in development Moments of Encounter is a site-specific performance work created for a market square context.

Created in collaboration with volunteer performers, Moments of Encounter is inspired by the daily rituals and patterns of movement inherent within a market place. The performance explores everyday interactions and gestures to create new and re-configured meaning and inter-relations.

As the accepted boundaries of exchange fluctuate and blur, performers combine with passers-by to create an immersive, interactive work that can be experienced from the outside and within - involving the spectators themselves as part of the theatrical frame and real-time performance.

In 1976, the best ever Polish football team played against arguably the best ever Iranian football team in the Montreal Olympics.

This match featured the world renowned players Tomaszewski, Lato and Deyna for Poland as well as the great Ali Parvin for Iran, nicknamed ‘The Sultan’. Such a clash of talent led to a memorable game with Poland edging to a 3-2 win against Iran and going on to gain the Silver medal.

In a humorous slide lecture/performance, visual artist Chris Dobrowolski and 30 Bird artistic director Mehrdad Seyf discuss football, revolution, swimming, chess, love and Subbuteo aided by footage from the match, specially created installations and stills of their family histories from the present day to WWII. Both artists are from migrant families and their experience of everyday life isn’t defined by one culture. Poland 3 Iran 2 truly captures how much two people from seemingly completely different backgrounds have in common both locally and internationally.

A one-woman show that begins with a girl walking the streets of London searching for the next party, navigating her way through a city she believes has all the answers.

Full of expectation and hope and on a quest to make her life just like the movies, she isn’t prepared for the party not being what it seems as she encounters a series of reality checks epitomised by dead-end jobs, disillusioned characters and the immeasurable cynicism of her generation. Then, in the hangover after the successful Olympic bid celebrations, she finds herself on one of the trains blown up on 7/7. In the seconds the bomb takes to explode, it throws her and London into the chaos of fallibility.

Certain Dark Things is an intimate and powerful family drama set under Franco’s religious dictatorship of the 1950s, featuring the company’s trademark ‘in the round’ performance, beautiful live music, and magically inventive storytelling.

The effects of Franco’s attempt to suppress the Basque culture are still felt today. In Certain Dark Things, You Need Me tell the story of a young Basque boy and his sexual awakening in a climate of fear, as those around him struggle under the intense pressures of family, politics and religion.

The piece first premièred at the 2008 Hightide Festival with a company of Basque, Spanish, Catalan and British actors and is staged in the round with live music. Following this success, the piece completed a sell-out run at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2009 and is now touring the UK.

3 3D Camera Obscura is a site responsive artwork that captures the unique character and life of Ipswich town centre to offer viewers a fresh perspective of Ipswich.

This immersive sculptural installation interacts both with the audience and its environment by mixing traditional photographic techniques with anaglyph 3D stereoscopic technology used in cinema (two colour filter left/right eye separation). Viewers are invited to observe the projected moving image through corresponding coloured glasses, experiencing the illusion of depth in the rendered depiction of everyday encounters and passers by.

This piece depicts the switch-over point: when a mother who has given all her life now needs care and love herself. It’s often upsetting and untimely, but also very frustrating for those around.

At the heart of this play is the life of 85 year old Nora Giddings.

Her daughter, Caroline, the once lively, creative woman has been slowly disappearing for the past couple of years, but her decline has become now more worrying. Caroline now suspects that her mother is not coping well with day to day living. Up until now, she has been only too willing to be convinced that Nora is managing.

In Burning Out, Katherine May guides us through a dream-like landscape, immersing us in the story of two women linked by an invisible thread. We are invited to peer inside the author’s world as she creates and manipulates her characters.

Burning Out challenges the traditional author reading, drawing in bespoke sound (designed by Tim Blazdell) and live video performance. It invites new audiences into literary performance, including those who will never read the book.

Tales from the Bar of Lost Souls is a new theatre show and workshop project made as a collaboration between The National Theatre of Greece, Cyprus Theatre Organisation and imitating the dog as part of the British Council Creative Collaboration programme. “imitating the dog, a company at the forefront of testing the nature of theatre” The Guardian imitating the dog experiment with the role of story-telling and narrative in contemporary theatre.
