Creative Learning uses the arts to develop creativity, unlock potential, explore diversity and celebrate identity. Clear? If you’ve taken part, bought or commissioned work, or seen what we do that statement probably makes sense, but if you haven’t it might take some explaining.

So here goes...

We use the productions, artists, skills and resources of the New Wolsey Theatre to increase your understanding of how theatre works, to develop your own creativity, to broaden your knowledge about a subject or the world around you, or to give you a better understanding about yourself.

We even apply the techniques we use in a rehearsal room to give people the opportunity to see what motivates their own behaviour.

We deliver a service to schools and colleges, a programme of projects and events for children, young people and the community, and a platform for students, arts educators and teachers to gain new skills and share good practice.

AND we provide over 20,000 opportunities to participate every year.

CHILDREN & FAMILIES Drama Club

Storymaker

Children’s Shows

Saturday Morning Drama Club is for primary school aged students.

There are 2 working groups, the first for 7 - 9 year old’s and the second for 9 - 11 year old’s.

Storymaker is a traditional piece of storytelling for children aged 3 - 6.

Storymaker runs once a month on a Saturday Morning during the professional seasons upstairs in the New Wolsey Theatre Bar. Storymaker is also available for schools, libraries, and community venues to buy.

Children’s Shows at the New Wolsey Studio are presented once a month, excluding the summer break, and run for an extended period up to and over Christmas. The work is made up of a variety of touring productions from established and emerging Children’s Theatre companies.

The Storymaker has two outcomes, Little Story for 3 and 4 year olds lasts for 20 minutes and is followed by a structured playtime and Big Story for 5 and 6 year olds lasts for 25 minutes and is followed by the opportunity for the participants to make their own version of the story that has been told. An actor from the New Wolsey Theatre performs the story, directed by the Associate Director.

The programme is designed to meet the needs of younger children aged 2 - 7. Tickets are sold at £7.00 per head, without discounts for sitting on knees or concessions. Productions perform between either 2 or sometimes 3 times through the day.

The groups meet in term time working in 2 blocks of 6 weeks running in each term for 36 weeks of the year. Each half term has an aim, but the specific objectives are developed in consultation with the participants.

The group is led by the Drama Club Leader with an Assistant. There are approximately 20 members in each group.

Members pay £120/£90/£60 per year and there are (limited) bursuries available. The groups are auditioned annually running in line with the calender year.

The performances held at the NWT are split into two sessions. The first is Little Story, half an hour after the story finishes, the second is Big Story.

This successful provision is complemented by the Storymaker offer, and is succeeded by some events in the main programme and the Drama Club offer.

YOUNG PEOPLE Youth Theatre

Young Company

Young Associates

The New Wolsey Youth Theatre is for 11 - 16 year olds who enjoy drama and want to learn more.

Weekly workshops, regular projects, and productions are designed to increase participant’s theatre knowledge and experience, as well as developing confidence and social skills.

The New Wolsey Young Company is for 16 - 21 year olds who are considering a career in the arts. A programme of skills and training sessions combines with three annual productions, access to entry level employment and ongoing engagement with the industry to make a high quality platform for committed young people to develop their abilities as theatre makers.

The Young Associates are young people aged 18 - 21 who are actively pursuing a career in the arts, and want to gain first hand knowledge and experience in a professional theatre environment.

Working closely with the Creative Learning Team and the Senior Management Team, the Young Associates contribute to programming decisions with specific reference to representing the needs of young people in the repertoire, work with various teams to develop pathways for other young people to follow into their department or practice, and are expressly mandated to create work that promotes theatre to young people who feel that the arts do not reflect them or their values.

There are 3 working groups, the first for 11, 12, and 13 year olds, the second for 13, 14, and 15 year olds and the third for 15 and 16 year olds. There are approximately 20 places in each group.

The groups meet weekly in term time. All of the groups are facilitated by the Creative Learning Practitioner. The third group will amalgamate with the Young Company for the Summer Term.

The group is mentored by the Associate Director. All participants are offered the opportunity to perform in one or more of the productions, the first directed by the Associate Director in the Spring Term, the second directed by a Freelance Artist in the Summer Term, and the third devised or directed by the group themselves in the Autumn Term. The Young Company will amalgamate with Group 3 of the Youth Theatre in the Summer Term. The Young Company is fundamental component in the Creative Learning Offer, key to the development of our themes, a consistent example of the impact of our process and a regular showcase in our community.

This work makes up the central activity in our talent development offer. It is our aim to extend this profile to gain industry recognition by supporting their journey onto drama courses and other preprofessional qualification routes and by profiling their activity in industry publications.

The Young Associates are employed for specific tasks and volunteer for others. The Young Associates are administered by one member who is given weekly paid hours to maintain communication between them and the rest of the New Wolsey Teams.

This member also generates with the Associate Director the agenda for the regular Young Associates meetings, and sits on New Wolsey Theatre Board meetings to update the board and ask and answer questions.

SCHOOLS & COLLEGES Partner Schools

Learning Lounge

Partner Schools is new. Since we launched Creative Learning in 2008 we’ve been working really hard to find the best way of providing schools and colleges with what they want and what they need from us. 100’s of workshops with 1000’s of participants later we think we’ve got it. We will be offering 3 exceptional packages that will make a major impact in schools and colleges, and give every student the chance to take part in the arts.

The Learning Lounge connects teachers with artists, actors, practitioners, facilitators and educators in the informal sector.

There are 4 annual events providing the opportunity to share ideas, discuss good practice and build links across the sector. Each event culminates in the attendees going on to watch a performance at the New Wolsey Theatre or Studio.

Each package lasts for 12 months and includes performances from the new Touring Company, a series of curriculum linked workshops and performances, guaranteed work experience placements, an industry day at the theatre, reduced price tickets for productions at the New Wolsey, advance notice of upcoming shows, and more.

For Schools and Colleges outside of Suffolk the offer can still be made but only at a higher cost to reflect the reduction to Suffolk Schools due to the continued financial support from Suffolk County Council’s Children and Young People’s Directorate. The Partner Schools offer is designed to completely replace all of our ad hoc activity in schools and colleges within 2 years. At which point we will only work with partner schools and colleges. The programme will be delivered in large part by the in house team, with significant support from freelance artists and practitioners.

The event is by invitation only, and does not make a charge to participants. This is part of our recognition of the strategic position of the New Wolsey Theatre in challenging, supporting and developing practice thereby increasing the health of the sector and introducing new ways of thinking.

Teacher Tickets Teacher Tickets provides formal educators with increased access to the repertoire by providing them with early notices and information on programming choices.

Teachers will be given concessionary discounts and offers, as well as early and late notice offers for group bookings.

Access to the scheme is by paid membership, with a set number of places included in the partner schools offer.

ON TOUR In Schools

In The Community

On Tour uses professional actors, designers, writers and directors to develop original theatre for schools, and builds on the success of our produced work by targeting and increasing the range and number of performances.

On Tour builds on the success of our produced work (Fragmenting, Taken Leave, Springboard, and Write Now) by focusing and developing the range and number of performances in the community.

In addition to the work we have originated for secondary school touring (No Ball Games), and the Youth Perform project we will devise and develop a new primary school tour and further performances in secondary schools. The aim is to establish our School and Community Touring activity as a regular feature in the programme of activity in Suffolk schools, and to work with Partner Schools to develop new work that directly meets their needs.

We will refine the current offer of work developed or originated for the Pulse Festival, various community performances and projects with local writers to a responsive and targeted programme of productions, interactions and site-specific performances of work that reflect the needs and changing aspirations of the constituents in our community and engages with people who have come to believe that theatre does not represent them or their values.

BEHIND THE SCENES Open Day The New Wolsey Theatre presents a biennial Open Day that provides children, families, and adults in the community with the opportunity to participate in activities and events at the theatre, increase their knowledge of how the industry works, and deepen their ownership and engagement. It is a key part of our aim to demystify the experience of visiting the theatre, and also acts as a major part of our participatory engagement with the community.

Backstage Tours Regular Backstage Tours will be offered when we have productions in the New Wolsey Theatre space for 1 week or more. There will be a minimum of 4 tours offered on a Saturday either prior to a matinee or evening performance, there will also be specific dates identified when we can offer school or group bookers a tour to enhance their visit. There is a fixed charge for each participant without any concessionary offers. The tour developed for both the industry days and the open days is well tested and engaging.

Post Show Talks The New Wolsey Theatre offers its audiences the opportunity to get closer to the production they have seen through post show talks with the cast and creative teams. Attendance from the theatre or visiting companies is by prior agreement and the talks are available to ticket holders at no further cost.

WORK EXPERIENCE Placements

Industry Days

Work Experience placements are offered to young people considering a career in the arts at Key Stage 4 and above in mainstream education; specific supported placements are also offered to excluded young people being supported through the Referral Service. A Work Experience guaranteed place is included in the Partner Schools Package that undertakes to provide 2 placements for every secondary school. Suffolk New College and the New Wolsey Theatre are delighted to be working in partnership to deliver an Edexcel BTEC Level 3 course in

Industry Days are a brilliant way to introduce a group of students to the theatre industry and theatre professionals. These half day workshops include a backstage tour of the theatre, a practical workshop and the opportunity to meet the team. They are designed to illuminate the profession and demystify the organisation. Industry Days are included as work experience offer for primary schools and some special schools.

Production Arts

The new course will be available to students from September 2012 and will be based in the professional environment of the New Wolsey Theatre, Ipswich.

However, students will have access to the excellent facilities and support available at Suffolk New College. There are only a few colleges in the country that offer this course, the nearest being in Thurrock or Lincoln. This unique collaboration is a response to the impending skills shortage that has been identified by the National Skills Academy and is designed to provide work-based learning and invaluable insight into working at a busy venue which presents theatre, dance, music, children’s shows, youth theatre and the annual Fringe Festival.

Internships is new activity designed to provide entry level employment on fixed term contracts for people wanting to explore working in the arts and graduates looking for their first employment in the industry.

OPEN SEASON Placements

Open Platform

The Open Season provides access to our venues, facilities and resources for the amateur and community sector in the local area.

It’s their chance to display their achievements in a professional environment, celebrate their identity and showcase their talents. The season includes performances of small scale drama in the New Wolsey Studio, runs of performances of major musicals in the New Wolsey Theatre with our schools festival, charity and community focused events, and performances from the New Wolsey Young Company in between. Places are offered on the basis of a successful application.

Applications are required to express an understanding of the potential audience for the work to be presented, demonstrate artistic ambition, or good cause i.e. historical or contextual.

Open Access provides structured opportunities for advice, guidance and mentoring, as well as increased access to the New Wolsey Theatre to the local amateur and community sector as a part of our ongoing commitment to supporting the development and sustainability of the amateur sector. We will offer time limited packages specific to their needs, advice, guidance and some mentoring will be offered at no cost, however specific forms of support and training will include a charge to the participant or group.

Packages are offered on the basis of a successful application.

Applications are required to express an understanding of the need for support and a description of what is required, which can include artistic guidance, technical training or marketing support etc...

The Open Platform is a web based resource. The page provides ongoing access to free and paid resources. Scripts for devised projects such as No Ball Games, workshop plans, design specifications etc will be offered at no cost thereby extending the life of these resources. We will also offer some resources at a cost such as the sets from Young Company/Youth Theatre productions that cost too much to store and therefore can be offered with a small charge.

TEAM BUILDING Role Plays Working with actors from the New Wolsey programme the Creative Learning Team will create short interactions, role plays and sketches designed to reflect the training or learning needs of a corporate client. We will build on our success in delivering short performances for Learning and Skills Council and the Suffolk Leadership Consortium by promoting our capacity to deliver this as a service to the wider business community.

Establish a new programme that uses theatre to transform perception, increase personal confidence and illuminate decision making. We will provide local businesses and corporate clients with bespoke training designed to provide them with the means to develop their businesses for the future.

The New Wolsey Theatre is well placed to provide corporate and private business clients with high quality entertainment attached either to the repertoire or by designing performances for specific events. This will take the form of small scale events for small parties, dedicated performances within a longer production run, and full scale performances commissioned for notable events.

This falls into 2 distinct strands: 1: W orking with an identified corporate training provider under the umbrella of the New Wolsey Theatre to offer specific packages around customer service, negotiation, etc.

2: U sing the skills and expertise of the Creative Learning Team to provide enrichment opportunities including Combat Training, Make-up Training, Team Building etc.
