FOREWORD Birmingham’s Black History Month has become an important feature of the City’s event calendar since the mid-1990s. As the most diverse Core City in the UK, Birmingham holds its diversity dear and the City Council is mindful of the need to reflect on its development, to learn new and inspiring stories, and include as many people as possible in considering the impact of black history on our identity in the 21st Century. Throughout October, residents and visitors will be able to take part in various cultural activities. It will be a month of celebration, with vibrant and uplifting content, and a great opportunity to explore Black history and the relevance of Black contributions in the United Kingdom and worldwide. Congratulations must go to the partners and organisations involved in organising and co-ordinating the month’s activities across Birmingham. Our thanks, in particular, go to Blackstory Partnership,
which includes PFG Consultancy, Inspiring a New Generation, Recognize Black Heritage and Culture and Mykal Wassifa Brown CIC, who have compiled an exciting programme of events including a spectacular 3 part launch event at the Legacy Centre of Excellence (formally The Drum, Aston) on Saturday 28 September 2019. I am confident this programme will appeal to a wide range of tastes and interests and hope that 2019 will be another successful year for this important initiative.

WELCOME For the 4th year in succession Blackstory Partnership is proud to produce and host Birmingham’s Black History Month 2019 Brochure and Launch Event at Legacy Centre of Excellence. Blackstory Partnership expresses its thanks to Birmingham City Council for enabling Birmingham’s Black History Month Launch and Brochure to be produced each year, since 2016 by the partnership. This year's official launch is taking place over a full day to capture all ages. The day's program consists of inspirational, educational and informative activities for all to participate. Our 2019 brochure includes activities, events and exhibitions that are taking place across Birmingham during October. We have not captured all of the events and activities taking place during Black History Month. We appreciate if you could visit the website to inform us of any events during October and beyond.

Professor Toni Morrison (Chloe Anthony Wofford Morrison) was a writer extraordinaire whose legacy will live on only if her works are placed into the hands of future generations. We pay homage to Professor Morrison by demonstrating how she was a modern day – Auset (Isis) an ancestor returned to help us remember, reconnect and heal. She demonstrated to us how to make visible to the world both our collective and personal stories of struggle and victory.

Pre-Windrush to the Present Day A History of Black Representation on Stage at Birmingham Hippodrome FREE Exhibition Within 12 months of opening, on 24 September 1900, Jimmy Richardson the first black performer at Birmingham Hippodrome took to the stage. The intervening years have seen at least 92 further black-led acts take to the Hippodrome’s stage. In 2019, as Birmingham Hippodrome celebrates its 120th birthday and co-produces a brand new production of The Color Purple, we are delighted to present a heritage exhibition in collaboration with Blackstory Partnership that celebrates the long history of black representation on our stage.
