Reimagine19 is a purpose driven plan designed to improve the academic performance of our students and reimagine the classroom of the future. The plan is predicated on the belief that we have the will and the capacity for change.

Through the integration of the components of Reminagine19 the district is working with community partners to create meaningful and relevant educational pathways using realworld learning for traditional learners and adult students.

Access to technology in our modern facilities will enhance great teaching and student engagement. The strategic and laser focused goals combined with rethinking the school day and addressing the whole child will help to remove some of the barriers that hinder student achievement.

The ambitious plans implemented through ReImagine19 will give Willoughby-Eastlake students the preparation they need for life after graduation.

1 RETHINKING THE SCHOOL DAY As part of our vision for our schools, we must address how we can utilize our time with students in order to maximize authentic learning and student engagement. The traditional approach to scheduling classes has been referred to as making students “prisoners of time.” As a nation, we have continued to manage learning around schedules designed more than 50 years ago and those schedules have not changed. It is time to plan for learning around the needs of students and see if we can offer alternatives.

High schools and middle schools continue to deliver instruction in 40-55 minute blocks, which has been the model for generations. Elementary students are often subjected to fragmented schedules that disrupt classroom instruction. For this generation of learners and the generations to follow, we must think differently to meet their needs. It’s time for us to rethink the school day, how classes are scheduled, and how we can best deliver instruction.

Learning doesn’t just happen during traditional school hours. Students can and should have access to resources at varying times, on-site, at alternate locations, and, if needed, via technology.

We don’t have all the answers yet, but as a part of our strategic plan, we are willing to commit to exploring alternative school schedules and the utilization of instructional time.

Research of schools across the country tells us that a well-crafted schedule opens opportunities for flexibility in teaching and learning, creating an increased level of engagement for staff and students.

As part of our commitment, we will look at the effective use of space, time, and resources. We will explore flexible schedules and innovative teaching practices and how those two things support each other to create an inviting and appealing educational climate in which to learn. The power of innovative scheduling is that it provides quality time for teaching and learning, encourages a positive school climate, and allows for variances in student learning time.

REAL-WORLD LEARNING

Every day, teachers are faced with establishing the most effective way for their students to learn the course material and also help students see the relevance in their learning. We want our students to become self-directed learners who develop problem-solving skills they can employ in their current courses and in their life outside the classroom. At the heart of real-world learning opportunities is the ability to create authentic learning experiences for students.

Students must meet the standards and demonstrate mastery of skills at every grade level and equally as important, is the application of those skills. Using problem-based learning techniques enables students to work with peers to solve complex and authentic problems while demonstrating their knowledge of content as well as their reasoning and communication skills. Teachers are as excited and motivated as the students when they are empowered to be facilitators of learning by creating and supporting an educational environment that promotes innovative thinking. As students solve problems, they learn important lessons by following a design process, facing challenges and failures, and through perseverance they experience a sense of achievement and personal success.

Facing these challenges, our teaching and support staff have already begun to use problem-based learning techniques in their classrooms. Extensive professional development has been and will continue to be provided to support our educators as they incorporate problem-based learning in their classrooms. In problem-based learning experiences, students often become the leaders as their teachers support their quest for information and help foster their interests. Students can tackle problems and build skills that will enable them to be more confident as they pursue higher education opportunities and strive for competitive employment.

EDUCATIONAL PATHWAYS By providing students with multiple opportunities to explore their career and higher education interests, they will be in a better position to make decisions regarding their post-secondary career and college options. These options, or educational pathways, provide them with a glimpse into workforce trends and enable them to investigate how their interests and strengths align with future options.

Our goal is to produce learners with improved career and college readiness skills. We will do this by continuing to provide career technical programs through our partnership with Excel TECC, postsecondary institutions and community-based industries who provide internship experiences.

We will also continue to assist students to develop skill sets to meet the needs of employers and prepare them with the academic skills, knowledge and training which will lead to success in their career or further educational pursuits.

TECHNOLOGY As our society moves further into the 21st century it is vital to ensure that our students are prepared for what lies ahead. The World Economic Forum, in their 2016 “Future of Jobs” report, estimates that 65% of students will work in jobs that have not yet been invented. By implementing technology along with problem-based learning and 21st century skills, we will better prepare our students for their future.

In the past few years, the Willoughby-Eastlake City School District has made significant progress in establishing a strong technology infrastructure in our schools and offices and in providing access to technology for our students, teachers, and support staff. Steady progress has also been made in regard to the knowledge and skill levels of our teachers, administrators, and support staff in the basic use of technology.

Our networks are being improved every year. Our wireless infrastructure is designed to support 1:1 computing. The number of wireless access points has tripled over the past four years. The district is working to improve the Wide Area Network to better support the high capacity needed in the buildings for online learning and 1:1 computing. The location of the district’s new administration building will further enhance the district’s ability to establish a stronger district-wide network.

The district computing ratio has gone from 5:1 to 3:1 over the past several years. The School of Innovation has been piloting 1:1 computing for the district over the past two years. Willoughby-Eastlake’s goal is to begin the rollout of 1:1 in 2019 to designated grade levels. In addition to devices, the district is working on a plan to provide professional development to all of our teachers. We don’t just want devices available, we want them integrated into all parts of our curriculum.

The district is not only moving forward with hardware, but is also pushing the boundaries with the use of software and analytics in order to improve instruction. Most of the district’s curriculum series have an online component that is interactive and engaging for students. The district uses Northwest Evaluation Association Measures of Academic Progress (NWEATM Map) to gauge student progress toward learning outcomes and employs Illuminate to analyze all testing data in the district.

This helps the district determine where more resources are needed for the proper instruction of our students and to progress monitor individual student growth.

Finally, the infusion of technology is allowing the district to launch exciting new course options. Our two high schools are engaging students in courses such as a drone class that enables students to earn their drone pilot’s license, VEX robotics and introductory STEM courses to introduce students to engineering, biosciences and aeronautics, just to name a few.

Students are experiencing augmented reality software that will open up new worlds of learning and potential careers. We have also launched the WE Experience class focusing on digital media, design, marketing, and communication. Future classes could include app development and others. The rollout of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards to the district will also help the district move forward to ensure that each grade level is getting the proper technology exposure at the right times. Technology is an exciting and ever-changing world that we fully embrace as part of the educational experience for all students and staff.

MODERN FACILITIES Our goal is to ensure that our facilities support an innovative and inspirational learning environment while serving as a community asset.

Student-Centered Learning We have no idea what the world will look like in five years, much less 60 years from now, but we do know one thing students will need to know for the rest of their lives: how to be lifelong learners and problem solvers. We are charged with preparing students for a life of learning in our future world and providing them with an environment in which to do so. In essence, it involves student collaboration, project-based learning and critical thinking, and bringing technology to the student. Instead of a teacher lecturing to a group of students on only one topic, information on a variety of related topics is being pulled from the student through many methods of communication and expression. We understand the methods and materials for educating children are constantly changing and that these trends have a direct impact on educational facility design.

We feel these trends have a direct impact on educational facility design today. Our designs must address current methods, but also be creative, forward thinking, and most importantly, flexible.

South High School

Understanding Flexible Learning Spaces With flexible spaces to accommodate as many of the learning styles into any given space as possible, we can move away from a model of single-purpose spaces to multifunctional areas. It helps to think about modification of spaces using the ideas of adaptability, flexibility, and variety. What stays constant is the building ergonomics, natural ventilation, natural light, acoustics, etc. Other aspects of the building, such as the size of the rooms, the type of equipment in the spaces, and the type of technology supported in the classroom should be able to be changed over the years as necessary. Flexibility is more than simply incorporating moveable walls. Other options may include transparent glass or roll-up doors leading to a common space for breakout learning, moveable furnishing systems on casters, flexible wall partitioning systems to create larger or smaller learning spaces, adjustable height work surfaces or extending learning to the outdoors. With ever-changing technology and curriculum and increases or decreases in student population, classrooms and administrative spaces must be adaptable to accommodate different learning environments.

THE WHOLE CHILD The purpose of the whole child goal is to help our students, their families, and the community to be successful. GREAT TEACHING In Willoughby-Eastlake our goal is to improve student achievement by putting students first, providing high quality instruction, and maximizing time on task. Great teachers, first and foremost, are kind, caring, and compassionate people, who put the needs of their students first. Great teachers understand that if a student does not feel safe, cared for, and valued, that the student will not be able to achieve their best. Great teachers are culturally aware and responsive to their students’ needs. They respect the backgrounds of all students and embrace diversity within the classroom. Putting students first and creating a caring, safe, and engaging learning environment for all students is the greatest priority.

Great teachers engage in professional learning opportunities to hone their skills in order to provide high quality engaging learning experiences for their students. They also understand that not all students learn in the same way nor at the same pace. Great teachers gather qualitative and quantitative information about each student, so that they can tailor the learning experiences to meet each student where they are and move them toward their greatest potential. A great teacher is a facilitator in the classroom and knows when it’s most effective to instruct and when students need time to explore independently and/or collaboratively. Great teachers in all content areas understand the importance of literacy skills and provide reading and writing opportunities daily.

Great teachers love learning just as much as they love teaching. Each moment of every day is an opportunity to teach, learn, and grow; therefore, time on task is maximized and never wasted.

ADULT EDUCATION The support our school district provides for students doesn’t end with high school graduation. We ensure that we support the development of a strong workforce and higher education opportunities for our students beyond a high school diploma. People throughout the Northeast Ohio community are seeking options to enable them to continue their education and assist them in acquiring skills to improve their prospects of becoming employed, advancing their careers, and making the successful transition to new careers. The district’s adult education programs provide workforce training to improve and enhance the work experience of individuals, as well as the community, by providing a pool of highly skilled employees.

Meaningful workforce training that increases job opportunities helps reduce poverty rates and improves generations of high school graduates who transition to meaningful careers. Our programs support the state’s Ohio Means Jobs initiatives to increase employees for in-demand occupations.

The Adult Education Department already offers several medical career programs leading to certification, including: Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN), Medical Billing and Coding Specialist, Medical Assistant, State Tested Nursing Aide (STNA), and Phlebotomy. Our goal is to have an LPN to Registered Nurse (RN) program in place, as well as to start an Aesthetics Program, welding, and trade programs as options for adults. We plan to be the premier provider in our area, to meet the needs of healthcare vacancies in the greater Cleveland area, and to bridge the gap between entry level nursing and the numbers of professional nursing employees needed to improve patient outcomes.

As a provider of a K-12 education, our priority is to not only prepare students to enter college or a career following high school graduation, but to continue to support them and others in the community to prepare them for employment, help them advance in their careers, and to ensure that the local workforce is skilled and ready to support and provide services in our community.

PARTNERSHIPS An important goal of Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools is to build business partnerships that are mutually beneficial and support long-term relationships. Partnerships are designed to give our business community the opportunity to donate resources to our staff and the students, who will be the workforce of tomorrow.
