INSIDE Coronavirus Disease How will W-E help keep students healthy?

A Message From Your Superintendent Dear parents, guardians and community members, While Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools does not have a confirmed case of COVID-19, caused by the coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), we are aware of the heightened concerns in our schools and in our community about the spread of this virus. Your child’s well-being is my primary concern and I am committed to keeping that at the forefront of the district’s priorities.

The district is closely monitoring all recommendations from the United States Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the Ohio Department of Health and the Lake County General Health District for guidance regarding this new virus.

Based on recent reports, COVID-19 is not actively circulating in Ohio. If the district becomes aware of any student or staff member diagnosed with this virus, we will follow all recommendations set forth by the Ohio Department of Health and will notify our staff and parents and guardians as we do with any and all communicable illnesses in our buildings.

On the next few pages of this Community Update, you will find some of the current protocol that is followed within our district for handling communicable diseases. You will also find recommendations made by the Ohio Department of Health to minimize illnesses of any kind, to include the flu and COVID - 19.

If you or a family member begin to show signs of a respiratory disease and believe it may be COVID - 19, please contact your healthcare provider and inform them of your symptoms. They will give you recommendations as to how you should proceed.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact my office or your school nurse for answers regarding this and all diseases that may impact your child.

What Practices are Currently in Place?

Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools works to be proactive at all times.

The district takes precautions on a daily basis to prevent the spread of communicable diseases and germs. Some of the measures taken daily include: 

The use of the Clorox Total 360 System, an electrostatic sprayer used to combat germs



Daily cleaning and disinfection of all parts of our buildings and classrooms



Daily thorough cleaning of all buses



Consistent use of hand sanitizer in all classrooms and in shared spaces



Consistent. age appropriate messaging to students reminding them to engage in proper hygiene during the school day

Working Together Maximize Student Health Please join Willoughby-Eastlake staff as they remind students about the importance of proper hand washing. The general public is encouraged by the CDC to watch these videos to review the importance of hand washing.

Students in Grades 6 to 12

Students in Grades K to 5

In addition to sharing these videos with your children, our staff will also be reminding your children to engage in the following practices that have been identified by the Ohio Department of Health : 

Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. If soap and water are not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. The district will have additional hand sanitizer available in our school buildings for student use, please use it as needed.



Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.



Avoid close contact with people who are sick.



Stay home when you are sick.



Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.



Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces.



Avoid shaking hands, especially with those that appear to be ill.

Symptoms of COVID - 19 (Coronavirus) The coronavirus that is causing concerns has symptoms similar to other respiratory illnesses.

Sore throat



Shortness of breath

Anytime a student experiences a high fever, it is recommended that they return to school after he/she has been fever-free for 24 hours without the use of fever-reducing medications.

Although health officials believe the risk to our school community is low at this time, Willoughby-Eastlake is committed to being proactive and to partnering with our families to keep students safe and healthy.
