A Message from Your Superintendent Hello Willoughby-Eastlake families!

Thank you for taking time to read this month’s Community Update. I hope that you are well and healthy!

The 2021 - 2022 school year has come to a close and we have celebrated another class of seniors. Congratulations to the Class of 2022 and to your families for a job well done! This month, I had the privilege of speaking to our preschool families and I referenced a saying that was shared with me, "The days pass slowly, but the years fly by." I am sure that the parents of our seniors, and even our preschool students, find truth in this statement. As these two groups of students prepare for the next chapter in their lives, the next few years will also pass quickly. Whether your child is a preschool student, a senior, or somewhere in between, I hope you have time to enjoy making new memories with them during the summer months.

TREASURER'S UPDATE Willoughby-Eastlake Treasurer's Department Updates Two times per year, the treasurer is responsible for reporting an updated five-year forecast to the State of Ohio. This information is also provided to the community and the Board of Education.

The current forecast has been adjusted to reflect the impacts of House Bill 110. The provisions in this bill determine the state funding allocated to each Ohio school district.

The cost to operate Willoughby-Eastlake Schools is approximately $8 million/month and the recommendation by the Government Finance Officers Association is 60 days in cash reserves (savings account), which is $16 million.

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS NORTH HIGH 2022 DAZZLE AWARDS NOMINEES Congratulations to the North High thespians for being nominated for the 2022 Dazzle Awards. The Dazzle Awards, presented by Pat and John Chapman, are affiliated with the Jimmy Awards/The National High School Musical Theatre Awards and recognize the importance of musical theater and arts education in Northeast Ohio high schools. At the May 21st ceremony, students performing in "Matilda the Musical" were recognized for their work.

North High and "Matilda The Musical" were nominated in the following catagories: Best Student Orchestra Best Technical Execution Best Scenic Design Best Costume Design Best Musical (Tier 1 - school musical budget less than $12,000)

Congratulations to the North High Chorale for earning a superior rating at the OMEA State Adjudicated Event. What an awesome achievement!

TRANSPORTATION - 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools and Petermann Transportation strive to provide our students safe transportation. The 2022-2023 alternate bus stop request form is now available on the WilloughbyEastlake website.

Willoughby-Eastlake Schools Community Update

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS INNOVATORS OF THE FUTURE PROGRAM Willoughby-Eastlake teacher, Ashley Tagle received an $850 grant this year from the Partners for Science and the Lakeland Community Foundation. This grant was used to create an initial STEM integration program called the Innovators of the Future. Ms. Tagle utilized these funds to lead a collaborative effort between The HIVE Makerspace at Lakeland Community College and two 4th grade classrooms at Jefferson Elementary and Longfellow Elementary.

The program teaches students elements of the design process in order to solve problems for their teachers and peers. This year's project gave the students the opportunity to redesign elements of their peer's classroom, build prototypes and work to refine their process and product with our partners at the HIVE Makerspace at Lakeland.

This month, both classrooms traveled to Lakeland Community College in order to refine their prototypes and then present them to the opposite classroom.

"This has been a valuable experience for all of our students and has opened their minds to new possibilities in STEM fields and in higher education as well as problem solving skills," stated Ms. Tagle.

Kudos to all for creating some fantastic designs!

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS ART SPLASH / FRAME DONATION

EARTH DAY CLEANUP Eastlake Middle School students spent Earth Day helping to beautify their community. Students worked to clean up areas around Eastlake Middle, Thomas Jefferson, and Bruce Yee park. The students learned the importance of Earth Day and had a great time!

DISTRICT NEWS & INFORMATION BRECKENRIDGE PEN PAL PROGRAM / WILLOUGHBY MIDDLE SCHOOL Throughout the school year, eighth grade students from Willoughby Middle School participated in a pen pal program with the residents of Breckenridge Village. Each student is paired with a resident and they have opportunities to exchange letters. As a culminating event, the students meet their pen pal during a luncheon.

During the month of May, Breckenridge Village held the annual luncheon, during which time, the students and the residents met face-to-face. This program gives students an opportunity to refine their writing skills and also develop important relationships with members of the community.

Thank you Breckenridge Village for giving Willoughby-Eastlake students such a warm welcome!
