A Message from Your Superintendent I hope that this newsletter finds you and your family well and that you had a restful Spring Break! It is hard to believe that we are in the last quarter of the school year. This is a very exciting time of year for our students, particularly our seniors. They are in the process of preparing for graduation and the next chapter of their lives. To their parents, it probably seems like it was just yesterday that they entered kindergarten! The time passes so quickly. This week, our seniors will be sent a link to enter information that will be displayed at graduation. Please encourage your student to fill this out so that we can honor them. There have been many great things happening in and out of our classrooms. I hope that this month you will be able to enjoy one of the student activities on our campuses, a play at the PAC or catch a game at one of our schools.

TREASURER'S UPDATE Congratulations Willoughby-Eastlake Treasurer's Department! This month, the Auditor of the State of Ohio, Keith Faber, presented the Treasurer's Office with the Auditor of State Award with Distinction. In addition to this award, Willoughby-Eastlake has been given a four star rating by the Office of the Auditor, with respect to transparency in government. The StaRS Rating System is a measure that determines whether or not government entities are compliant with Ohio Sunshine Laws. In addition to being evaluated as "compliant" entities are also recognized when they go beyond meeting Sunshine Laws. Willoughby-Eastlake was rated compliant and also recognized for meeting all seven of the best practices in this area. This is the highest possible rating that can be achieved. SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS North High Marching Band and Choir During Spring Break, the North High Marching Band and Choir traveled to Disney World in Orlando, Florida to participate in the Magic Kingdom Parade. This trip was the culmination of four years of fundraising done by each student and their families in order to pay for the trip. "I was so proud to see our students performing. They have worked tirelessly to prepare for the trip and were amazing at Disney," stated Scott Sell, North High Band Director. "The students and their families faced several hurdles due to COVID-19 over the past two years but never lost sight of their goal, the trip to Disney! This was an incredible experience and better than anything I could have imagined!" Along with the Marching Band, the 49 members of the North High Choir traveled to Disney. While there they had the opportunity to participate in a recording workshop. Choir Director, Devra Levine stated, "Traveling to Disney with our students was a great experience for them and also for me, as their director. The workshop allowed them to experience singing and performing on a whole new level. Every student reported that they loved the trip and wish it had lasted even longer!"

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS Eastlake Middle Art Contest Winners Congratulations to the Eastlake Middle School students who received ribbons from Willoughby Mayor Fiala at the Willoughby Arts Collaborative opening ceremony for their artwork. Each student designed work that fit the Middle School prompt, "Traditional Family Foods/Meals." There were also several students whose artwork was accepted to this show and will be displayed throughout the District during the next few months.

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS South High Digital Fabrication Students at South High collaborated with Replay For Kids to modify toys and assistive technology for children with special needs. During the process, students had to take apart the toy, find the correct button and solder new connections onto the small button. Once the new connections were in place, they drilled a small hole in the side of the toy for the new wires to go through. At the conclusion of their work, they had converted 30 toys to be distributed by Replay for Kids.
1:1 Technology Update The Willoughby-Eastlake School District was able to purchase Chromebooks using funds provided by the Federal ECF Grant. It has been a goal of the district to increase access to technology so that all students would have computers available to them on a 1 to 1 basis. After Spring Break, we will roll out 1:1 in grades 3 through 5. The remaining students in grades 6 through 12 will receive devices when returning to the classroom in the Fall. For the final group of students, those in grades K through 2, technology will be provided to them through classroom Chromebook carts.

CONGRATULATIONS Ashley Chase North High School Class of 2024 Ashley won second place in the Ursuline College 2022 High School Writing Contest. Her poem, "Fill my Mind with Knowledge" was chosen from over 100 entries. Congratulations Ashley!
Julie Oostdyk Grant Elementary School Classroom Teacher Mrs. Oostdyk was inducted into Eastlake North High's Hall of Fame for track and field! Congratulations!
North & South High Acadec Teams
This month, the teams from both North and South competed at the State Competition! Great work students!
Royalview Elementary School Royalview received a PBIS Grant for $5,000 from the state SST (State Support Team) and also a $5,000 STEM Grant from Batelle for Kids. Great work Roadrunners!

EACH CHILD READS GRANT The Willoughby-Eastlake School District was one of only 12 districts in the state to be awarded the competitive Each Child Reads Grant. The participating buildings will receive professional development and support for teachers and principals to improve their ability to provide instruction for children with dyslexia. This work will then be replicated in each of the other elementary school buildings.
