A Message from Your Superintendent Hello Willoughby-Eastlake families! Thank you for taking time to read this month’s Community Update. I hope that you are well and healthy! Spring of 2022 has arrived and we have many things to celebrate! This week, the district produced a video summarizing a decade of accomplishments with regard to our facilities and student opportunities. In addition to the exciting developments shared in this video, we also celebrate the accomplishments of many students across the district. Our young thespians have just finished their play, "Matilda the Musical"; we have a young student from North High School, Victoria Safradin, competing in the U.S.A. U17 Women's World Soccer Team; several senior athletes have committed to play sports at the college level; students across the district are receiving academic scholarships to assist with their transition to the next phase of their education and students of all ages have completed state testing in their classrooms. It is thanks to the hard work and dedication of our families, staff, community members and the students themselves that these accomplishments have occurred!

As we prepare to close the books on another school year, I wish everyone a safe month ahead. Our senior students will be attending their senior prom, families will host graduation parties, people will prepare for vacations and the excitement that comes with the end of the school year will fill the air. TREASURER'S UPDATE Willoughby-Eastlake Treasurer's Department - Fiscal Responsibility It is the job of the Treasurer to oversee the spending of the district and to ensure that all funds are spent in a manner that is fiscally responsible. Among many things, the Treasurer and his department: Provide sound financial guidance that assists the district in the decision-making process Protect the fiscal health of the district Complete all accounting, payroll and financial reporting for the district including: payroll and benefits, accounts payable and receivable, and prepare an annual budget for publication While completing these tasks, it is most important that this oversight occur while being good stewards of the tax dollars allocated to Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools. During the 2021-2022, Willoughby-Eastlake has been able to consistently offer a quality education while saving money in several areas. Some of these cost-saving measures include: A one-time savings of $2,050,000.00 obtained through contract amendments with Petermann Transportation
An annual savings of $10,000.00 as a result of the implementation of SCView - a paperless system for recordkeeping
An annual gain of $16,875.00 as a result of strategic investments
A one-time savings of $637,563.00 as a result of bond refunding

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS NORTH HIGH PRESENTS "MATILDA THE MUSICAL" The North High Ranger thespians have finished their recent production, "Matilda The Musical." After two difficult years, Deb Isom (North High drama teacher), shared, "Our North Drama Club is on the upswing. They are flourishing, creating and busy. Their hard work resulted in a fantastic show and I couldn't be more proud!"
CARDINAL CREDIT UNION "MAD CITY MONEY COMPETITION" Cardinal Credit Union's goal is to provide students with real-world financial experiences, before they go off to college, or embark on other endeavors, following high school. Through the Mad City Money initiative, they continue to prepare young adults for future financial responsibilities. At the conclusion of this real-world learning experience, the Mad City Money Competition, the Cardinal Credit Union generously awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship money to both North and South seniors.

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS WILLOUGHBY-EASTLAKE "ART SPLASH" ART SHOW It was great to see all of our young artists that came to the Art Splash Show at the Board of Education. Congratulations and great work!
CAREER OPTIONS PROGRAM SEEDLING SALE The Career Options Program annual Seedling Sale is now open and offers a variety of seedling plants ready for your garden. Career Options is a Willoughby- Eastlake program providing high school students the opportunity to learn about various careers and build employability skills. SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS GRANT STUDENTS GOING ABOVE AND BEYOND This amazing group of ladies, who volunteer with a special needs student at Grant Elementary, went above and beyond this Easter. They created an Easter basket and surprised their young friend while at school, hiding eggs for her to find. This group has formed a great relationship and have engaged in activities that will change their lives! Thank you ladies, for showing amazing kindness. BABCOCK SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS Mr. & Mrs. Babcock were owners of a local car dealership and strong believers in career technical training, preparing students for employment and assisting them to pursue their education after high school. Because of this commitment to education, they formed the Babcock Vocational Educational Trust. This trust, continues to help students each year and provides much-needed equipment for career technical programs. This year, ten WilloughbyEastlake students were the recipients of the Babcock Scholarship and were awarded a total of $11,000.00. Congratulations students and thank you to the Babcock Vocational Educational Trust!

SCHOOL HIGHLIGHTS NORTH HIGH CAREER EXPO DAY This month, during a Career Expo, students at North High School had the opportunity to speak with numerous local employers including representatives from the military and technical training programs. "We are excited to provide this event for our students. It helps them to think about life after high school while making valuable connections with future employers. In addition to this, students are able to develop crucial 'soft skills' that they do not always have the chance to refine in the classroom. I greatly appreciate our staff members that assist to make this possible." Eric Frei, North High Principal
PURPLE STAR SCHOOLS - CLASS OF 2021 Willoughby-Eastlake City Schools is proud to announce that eight schools in the district have been recognized as Ohio Department of Education Purple Star Schools. The schools presented with this award are: Jefferson, Longfellow, and Royalview Elementary Schools; the School of Innovation; Eastlake, Willoughby and Willowick Middle Schools and North High School. To meet the requirements for the Purple Star Award, schools must first designate a liaison between military-connected students, their families and the school. It is through these efforts and commitment to serving and supporting students and families connected to the United States armed forces and Ohio National Guard that they are recognized with the Purple Star designation. Congratulations to the Purple Star Class of 2021.

SCHOOL VIEWS SOUTH HIGH SCHOOL Thank you, Willoughby Kiwanis and the Willoughby South Key Club for helping with the Chagrin River Cleanup! The Willoughby Kiwanis Club is a service organization that supports activities that benefit children.

NORTH HIGH SCHOOL Congratulations, Victoria Safradin, and the U.S. U-17 Women's Youth National Team, on your 20-0 victory over Grenada while setting a record for the USA soccer team! Victoria is a junior at North High School and is proudly representing the United States as a goalie on the U.S. U-17 Women's Youth National Team. The team also won their second match against Puerto Rico 13-0 and their third game against Costa Rica 5-0, leading them to the Sweet 16 round of tournament play.
