On behalf of the Board, we also extend a warm invitation to all members to join us for the 66th Annual General Meeting of the Club, scheduled for Sunday, 26th May. I am pleased to share that Wenty Leagues continues to maintain financial stability, achieving strong results amidst a challenging landscape. 2024 holds great significance for Wenty Leagues as we continue our transformation journey with our comprehensive renovation project. This endeavour aims to elevate our venue into a premier entertainment destination, offering unparalleled experiences for our valued members and

In March our Marketing team, set out on their trek to conquer the mountain that is Mt Kosciuszko, in support of their colleague, Rebecca Gauci and raising funds and awareness for The Brain Foundation.
The team set out from Charlottes Pass at 4am, walking the first 6km in the dark. With emotions running high, the team came together to encourage, support, and assist each other in reaching their goal of getting to the top. With laughs, struggles and uphill battles the team reached their goal of getting to the top and were able to embrace their surroundings and enjoy breakfast with a view in the early hours of light.
The trek was an opportunity of a lifetime that the team was able to enjoy together and they made many lasting memories while raising awareness and funds for a very worthy cause. The trek back down allowed the team to take in the beautiful scenery that wasn’t able to be seen on the way up.
Donations from our wonderful Wenty Leagues community, helped us raise $12,030 for The Brain Foundation, to go towards research for Acoustic Neuromas.
Have you ever wondered what happens to the money that is thrown into the fountain at Wenty Leagues?
Our facilities team sweep out and collect the coins which are then donated to a community partner. Thanks to the amazing Wenty Leagues community we have been able to donate $6842.60 to Sydney Children’s Hospital’s Bear Cottage in February.
Bear Cottage is the only hospice in NSW, a very special place that is designated to caring for children with life limiting conditions. Bear Cottage is a state of the art 24-hour palliative care facility with access to some of the best medical equipment in the world.

The event was an opportunity to bring to light the pressing issues for women in today’s society and the celebrate the great achievements of women.
March marks the date for International Women’s Day. This year’s theme was inspire inclusion, aiming to eliminate stereotypes, bias and discrimination in society, as well as improving gender equity. Representatives from Wenty Leagues attended the annual event hosted by Revesby Workers.
Guests were treated to panel discussions tackling these big issues featuring; Lisa Annabel (Board Chair, Biyani House), Fariha Chowdhury (CEO & Co-Founder, Arise Foundation) and Gail Clarke (Dress for Success). Also, sharing their experiences and achievements was
Wenty Leagues hosted their inaugural Sports Lunch NRL Calcutta in support of our community partner, Family of League. Guests were given the opportunity to hear insights from past and present NRL players, Anthony Minichiello, Josh Renolds and Luke Lewis and NRLW player Corban Baxter. Calcutta is usually associated with horse racing, however, Wenty Leagues created a unique experience, in which guests were able to “purchase” their favourite NRL team.
Brad Blaze, speed artist, entertained the crowd with his unique style of entertainment. Guests enjoyed a 2course meal, and each received a goodie bag to take home.
The event was also an opportunity for Family of League to create awareness for their organisation and to raise funds to continue to support their programs. The fundraising for the event raised $22,675.

How long have you worked at Wenty Leagues?
“I joined the team last year in June. It’s been almost 10 months now, and every day feels like a new adventure.”
What do you enjoy about cooking?
“The most enjoyable part of cooking and being a chef is when you see the wonderful reactions of the people trying and eating the food that you make. Also, in cooking, I enjoy the process of turning a simple ingredient into something special or by just simply using different cooking techniques together to come up with a beautiful dish.”
Was there anything that inspired the Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib dish?
“I would say that our customers are the ones behind the inspiration of our Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib dish. We always want to give them the best, restaurant-quality comfort food they can get in Wenty Leagues, as this is their home away from home. Their feedback and appreciation for our dishes continually inspire us to push the boundaries and deliver exceptional culinary experiences.”
What do you think makes the Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib dish special?
“The Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib dish is special as it was curated by our Head Chef and all the Sous Chefs in Wenty Leagues. Our whole team considered using all the quality and sustainable ingredients from our suppliers that are available year-round. Our guests will have a whimsical dining experience as this dish has different textures that will touch their palate and has a depth of different flavours. It’s a culmination of our team’s dedication and creativity, that makes it truly special.”

“I’ve been part of the Wenty Leagues family since June 2023, so it’s been approximately 10 Months filled with learning, growth, and delicious moments.”

“What I enjoy most about cooking is the constant learning, endless possibilities, and a chance to build a personal connection with our members. There’s something magical about creating dishes that bring people together around the table. It’s not just about food, it’s about creating memorable experiences”
Was there anything that inspired the Apple Pie Calzone?
“It’s inspired by seasonal produce and a chance to showcase our slow-fermented dough, which is fermented for 48 hours. We wanted to create a dish that celebrates the nostalgia of a classic apple pie that many people would have grown up eating.”
What do you think makes the Apple Pie Calzone special?
“It’s our take on a calzone and a classic apple pie, baked fresh in a wood-fired oven and served with ice cream. Its simplicity makes it special, allowing the quality of ingredients and the talent of our team to shine through.”

Benjamin Lewis Jones, a titan of Rugby League and former Wentworthville Magpies player and coach sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 92.
As we reflect on his remarkable life, let us celebrate the milestones that defined his journey and the enduring impact he had on the Rugby League fraternity.
Born and raised in Swansea, Wales, Jones’ passion for both Rugby and Rugby League ignited at a young age. His talent quickly became evident as he rose through the ranks, playing for professional Rugby team Neath, at just 17 years of age. After serving a year in the Navy in 1949, Jones was selected for the British Lions tour of New Zealand and Australia in 1950, scoring 79 points across 8 games.
Late 1952, Jones made the switch across to Rugby League signing for Leeds, which at the time was a record fee of £6,000. One year
The Wenty Bowls Club has much reason to celebrate in the coming month, as both the men’s and women’s teams have had incredible success in their Pennant competitions and are headed to State Finals.
For the women’s team, led by Di Worthington, the journey was nothing short of a privilege. “My thoughts… such a privilege to be chosen to play for Wenty League’s, but also for us as a team to put it all together and get through to State playoffs,” expressed Di with gratitude.
With their sights set on the State playoffs, the women of Wenty have been working hard in preparation, with the support of the club behind them. Elizabeth Varecka echoed this sentiment, expressing her pride in representing Wenty at the State level alongside a remarkable group of ladies. “So proud to represent our Club, Wenty, at the State level with a great group of ladies. We will do our best to make our club proud,” she affirmed, embodying a spirit of unity and determination.
later, Jones made his International League debut for Wales, and then went on to tour Australia in 1954. As well as the Welsh nation, Jones represented Great Britian across a number of years - making 15 appearances between 1954 – 1957 and scoring in each of these games for a total of 150 points.
After an incredible 12-year stint at Leeds and multiple records broken, Jones accepted an offer to come to Australia and more specifically, the Wentworthville Magpies as a player/coach role in 1964.
Success soon followed, with the Magpies winning the second division competition in seven out of the eight years Jones was at the helm. Even with these outstanding results, ultimately it was believed that the proximity to Parramatta held back Wenty from promotion to the Sydney First Grade competition, with Cronulla and Penrith securing the two NSWRFL spots.
The tenure of Jones at the Magpies saw him play 87 matches as Captain/Coach, scoring a total of 856 points (18 tries and 401 goals). In the 1965 season alone, Jones kicked an incredible 108 goals and scored 3 tries, as he ended the season with 228 points. This success is arguably unrivaled by any player or coach at the Magpies, and thus came the deserved recognition of Jones being named five-eighth for the Wenty Team of the Century in 2012.
Off the field, Jones enjoyed the incredible lifestyle that Australia and Wentworthville had to offer. Teaching Mathematics at Riverstone High School, Jones also volunteered to prepare and coach the inter-school Rugby League team, and was a valued member of the community before returning to Leeds in 1972.
Wenty Leagues offers our deepest condolences to all of Mr Jones’ family and friends.

For the men’s team, they faced a fierce battle in the Zone Finals, as Grade 3 faced off against Greenlees Park in a showdown that tested their resilience and resolve. Despite facing stiff opposition, the Wenty boys secured a 2-shot win. “I have been lucky that this is my seventh State Pennant playoff with Wenty Leagues, but it doesn’t mean that this one is any less exciting.’ expressed John Sunderland. “Great playing in a team environment and I am still with the same majority and core group of blokes that have gone away together over the last six years. We are so grateful and appreciative of the support we get from the Leagues Club. Our goal is to win the very first NSW State Flag for Wenty!! Let’s Go!!”
As both teams prepare for the State finals, with the men drawn at Belrose in the Metro area and women heading to sunny Ballina on the far north coast, they receive support from the club, coaches, managers, and fellow members.
Wishing the teams the best of luck in their finals as they embody the spirit of excellence within the Wenty Bowls Club.
Wenty Leagues Dominates State Pennant at Division 3 Level
Wenty Leagues Bowling Club has emerged as a force to be reckoned with, clinching victory in both the men’s and women’s competitions at the Division 3 level, securing the Zone championships with impressive displays of skill and determination. As they set their sights on the State Finals, slated to commence on the 21st of May, the men’s playoffs are scheduled to take place at Belrose in Sydney, while the women’s team will journey north to Ballina, eager to stake their claim for a coveted State Flag.
Pink Charity Day - ‘Betty Hammond’ Memorial Triples
The Pink Charity Day, held in memory of the esteemed Betty Hammond, proved to be a resounding success on Thursday, April 11th. Drawing nearly 80 enthusiastic participants, the event unfolded with a delightful morning on the greens followed by a heartwarming sit-down lunch, adorned with notable speeches, trophy presentations, and the announcement of raffle winners. A staggering sum of close to $1500 was raised for the Cystic Fibrosis charity, leaving attendees inspired and uplifted. Shirley Hammond, daughter of the late Betty Hammond, expressed her gratitude and touched hearts as she pledged an additional $1000 in prize money for next year’s event.

• Major Pairs: Lyn Palo & Robyn Eagles claimed victory over Dot Cragg & Marie Farmer, 22-19.
With the NSW Champion of Champions event looming on the horizon, Wenty Leagues extends their best wishes to their Major Champions— Emmett McLeod, Nick Redcliffe, Lyn Hickey, Lyn Palo, and Robyn Eagles—as they prepare to represent the club in nearby Sydney Clubs in the coming weeks.
Men’s Championships Results
• Minor Fours: Kevin Furniss, Charlie Sciberras, Mick Galli, and Adam Ashton emerged victorious over John French, Steve Baldwin, Peter Macqueen, and Nathan Townsend, with a score of 22-15.
• Club Triples: Lance Williams, Nick Redcliffe, and Trent Whittingham will face off against Scotty Lambert, Eric Crabtree, and Dale Maitland in the final.
As we approach the climax of the Zone stage of the Open Gender State Pennants, the Wenty Magpies have four Grades performing exceptionally well. The Zone 10 finals are scheduled for the weekend of May 18th & 19th, and we anticipate fierce competition as Grades 2, 4, 7 White, and 7 Black vie for a Zone 10 Pennant Flag, aiming to secure their spot in the NSW State Pennant Finals. Stay tuned for further updates on their results in the upcoming journal articles. As the club gears up for more thrilling competitions, members are reminded that entries for the Consistency Singles and Major/Minor Graded Pairs will be closing imminently, urging them to seize the opportunity to showcase their skills and vie for glory on the greens.

Unfortunately 2023/24 wasn’t the year for any of our senior teams.

Dominos resumed from Christmas and holiday break on 1 February Dominos are played each Thursday at 7.30 pm near the Magpie Bar. Payment of $1 is required by 7.15 pm to enable the draw to be made. Players usually play as a two person team and teams are drawn at random. There may be a singles or triples game depending on the number of starters. Most games finish around 9pm.

February saw our AGM and the reappointment of the existing Committee, and a small function was held to announce and congratulate of the Fishing Club winners for 2023.
The Club Champion for a second year in a row was won by Anand (Senior) Nandoo; Second Place went to George Schembri, with Third to Stephen Sakalak.
The Monthly Biggest Bag was won by Anand Nando with 10.84 kg. Biggest Snapper won by Mick Prestipino weighing is at 3.24 kg, a great size. Biggest Morwong won by Manny Buhagiar weighing in
at 1.58 kg, another good size. The Biggest Fish of the Year was the Snapper weighing 3.24kg caught by Mick Prestipino. Congratulations to all.
The results from the fishing trip in late January was 4 Morwong, 1 Snapper, 3 Leather Jackets, 1 Pig Fish, 2 Long Finned Perch, 14 Flat Head, 7 Maori Wrasse, 7 Sergeant Baker and 1 Sweep. The Biggest Fish went to Kwan with a 0.91kg Flat Head, well done Kwan. From the numbers you can see the catch was small, nevertheless the anglers all enjoyed their day out on the water.
Fishing started at the 120 metres with sinkers not holding bottom, so we drifted to 180 then to 200 metres. The Boat Captain changed spots a few times however, the fishing was not good, lastly, we moved to around 50 – 60 metres before heading back to Kiama Wharf, the fishing was better with angles able to hold bottom. While not a lot of fish were caught a good day out just the same.
Our next trip wasn’t until late February, the weather while not perfect was still acceptable, there was a strong current to contend with, we still went out.
The fish caught was: 28 Morwong, 5 Snapper, 4 Leather Jackets, 6 Pg Fish, 10 Flat Head, 7 Sergeant Baker and 3 Sweep. The biggest fish caught was shared by two, Pat Dengate with a 1 kg Snapper and Anand Nadoo with a 1 kg Morwong, well done boys. The biggest bag with 4.71 kgs went to Anand Junior.
The March fishing trip was a great success with 16 Morwong, 5 Snapper, 1 Pig Fish, 7 long Finned Perch, 45 Flat Head, 3 Sergeant Baker and 62 Latchet. The biggest fish as caught by Mick, weighting 1.23 kg, type of fish was not provided, and the biggest bag coming in at 12.86 kgs was caught by Anand Junior. The weather was great with a 10-knot wind making it very pleasant on the water.
The Small Boats weekend went a head in early March with small numbers this time, the fishing while not great still saw members enjoying themselves with a lot of banter when they got together for the barbeque and the local Bowling Club dinners.

I hope this report finds everyone well and settling into 2024 nicely. Although in saying that, we are almost a quarter of the way into the year. Is it just me or are the days rocketing by?
So let’s get into it. Our Presentation Night was celebrated in January and I am certain everyone enjoyed themselves. Congratulations to all the winners and runners-up. A big congratulations to Ryan Payne who was our Clubman of the Year. Ryan had an exceptional year cleaning up at a considerable number of events.
In the previous report, I detailed that the 2024 calendar started with our Guzzler of Guzzlers. We have kicked off the bulk of our 2024 calendar events with our doubles Match Play being held in the January/February period with the final played at Penrith on the 18th of February.
Line honours went to Tim Fuhrmann and Avner Dahari with the runners-up Sione Fangupo and Manatu Fatu. Congratulations to all.
February also saw the hosting of our AGM which resulted in the election of our new committee members:

Congratulations to all those elected. It is my sincerest hope that we can double down on last year’s efforts and enhance our club for the benefit of all.
We started the Cock-of-the-Walk with qualifiers at Studley Park. This event is played over the majority of the year with the final played at Antill Park in December.
One of our members (Sione Fangupo) suffered an embarrassing start at Studley Park on the first tee with an air swing. What a lousy way to start his round.
Our annual trip away took place on the 10th of March which took place in the Hunter Valley, playing three quality courses, The Vintage, Cypress Lakes and Rydges. We were fortunate enough to experience great weather and as always, enjoyed great company.
Our Summer Ambrose took place at Campbelltown on the 17th of March with our winners being Sione Fangupo, Manatu Fatu, Joe Cannon and Anthony Fedele. Runners-up were Steve Adams, Brian Adams, Alan Thompson and Matt Pittas. Well done to all teams.
Our last event for this journal was our yearly challenge at Gosford Leagues with a resounding 350 points to 270 win to going to Wenty.
Thus far, we have had ten guzzlers over our first eleven rounds. The first three clubman positions are Manatu Fatu (114pts), Brian Adams (73pts) and Alan Thompson (51pts). We also have our Foursomes event, Leagues Club Cup and Stableford Championships coming up in the next couple of months. I will have results in the next journal.

Goshin Ju-Jitsu teaches a system of unarmed defensive techniques, using an attacker’s momentum against them, which is traditionally based and adapted for modern day situations. It is a modern form of the ancient Ju-Jitsu system, where knowledge, not strength, is required to defeat your attackers.
Ju-Jitsu is a Japanese martial art that can be enjoyed by women, men and children from 8 years of age.

We held our AGM on20/3/2024 with good attendance from Members. The President thanked the committee and members for their help and support for the past year. The whole committee were returned same as previous year.
Our next championship will be Mixed Pairs on Wednesday 20th June. Results will be in next report.

Monday nights’ shoot out is still up and running, with wining prizes range from $40.00 to $5.00 per night, depends on the number of participants each night. Entry fee is still $5.00 per person.

In November 1964, a request was made by 7 members of the Leagues Club (including Life members Ken Darke and Maurie Wheatley), who played social squash, to establish the Wentworthville Leagues Club Squash Club.
Hence, this year is our 60th Anniversary and arrangements are in hand to celebrate this Diamond Jubilee event in conjunction with our 2023 Annual Presentation Night, on Saturday evening 1st June 2024 from 6.00pm in the Blaxland Room West at the Leagues Club.
All current and ex-playing members and their partners are welcomed to attend, the cost being $40.00 per head which includes a 2 course meal and beverages. Tickets can be purchased at the Leagues Club or via the Club’s website.
To celebrate the event a special 60th Anniversary Shirt has been designed together with a key ring.

Our special guest speaker will be Mr. Geoff Hunt AM MBE, who is widely considered to be one of the greatest squash players in History, having been ranked the World Number 1 player from 1975-1980. He won 178 of the 215 tournaments he contested including 4 World Titles.
The 2024 AGM will be held in the Lawson South Room at the Leagues Club on Monday 3rd June 2024 at 7.30pm.
After 10 years of outstanding service as the Club’s Secretary, Graeme Mitchell is stepping down and hence we are looking for one of our members to take on this very important position.
Our Club had 15 teams participating in the 4 Divisions of the Western Districts Spring Pennant. The Grand Finals were held on 6th December 2023 and the Club was successful, winning 3 of the Divisions.

It is with deep regret that we report the passing of one of our members Bob Galea who was a Life Member of our Club.

The Swimming Club is currently on winter break with the summer season commencing on Sunday 13th October, 2024. However, Cumberland Council have decided to keep the pool open (they are heated) during the months of April to September from 6am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 7am to 4pm Saturday, Sunday and Public Holidays.
Should you be a Cumberland Council Senior Resident you are entitled to free admission each Tuesday and Thursday. So if you feel like some brisk exercise over the winter months this may be the place to go.
Whilst we are on winter break we have a good number of members attending the Kings Legacy Carnival at Dubbo over the June long weekend. The carnival has been going for a quite a while firstly at Wellington then at Queanbeyan for over 30 years and now at Dubbo. It’s a good time for old friends to catch up. Funds are raised from raffles held over the weekend with all proceeds going to Dubbo Legacy.
We will be having a social event during the winter months so that we can catch up.

Harvey Norman Women’s Premiership & Ron Massey Cup
How good is it to have the footy back ...
Our Ron Massey are off to a flying start, 2 from 2 for the season thus far. Round 1 and the team travelled up the M4 to take on Penrith Brothers and came away with a convincing 44 – 0 win. Round 2 and the boys are away again, this time to Hills and after some late changes to the team named on Tuesday, especially with both halves withdrawing late in the week, the Ron Massey team prevailed with a hard fought win 19 – 6.
A big congratulations to Josh Minhinnick for playing his 100th game for the club. With the season having a break over the Easter weekend round 3 sees the boys travelling to T.G Millner to face a much improved Ryde Eastwood. Round 4 is a bye for the Ron Massey side with round 5 seeing a new initiative for the NSWRL and the Ron Massey competition introducing a ‘Magic Round’ with all Sydney Shield and Ron Massey games to be played at St Marys stadium. Coincidently, we play St Marys in the final game of the weekend,
4.00pm on Sunday the 21st of April. Our first home game for the season comes in Round 7 where we host Mounties at Ringrose on Sunday the 5th of May, Sydney Shield at 12 noon and Ron Massey at 2.00pm. We would love to see you there.
Our Harvey Norman squad is also starting to take shape with the appointment of Lino Salafai to the head coach position. Lino brings an impressive resume with vast experience both as a player and through his coaching credentials being involved with Penrith through junior representative programs, Samoa U/18’s and U/23’s, Ron Massey level at Cabramatta, to more recently an assistant to Jamie Soward at St George NRLW.
We also welcome Joe Galuvao to the assistant coach position, another with vast experience appearing in 240 NRL games, including 2 premierships in 2003 and 2011, and also represented Samoa and New Zealand.
Welcome also Maherau (Milo) Arona who will take over the manager position, once again with plenty of experience managing Cook Island representative teams, and introducing Hannah Norrie who will take on the position of Strength & Conditioning coach for 2024. Most of the players pencilled in for Harvey Norman positions for Wenty in 2024, Round 1 is Sunday the 7th of July which is also Family Fun Day, will start the year playing Women’s Opens for Wenty United, a lead up competition for the Harvey Norman season.

Members’ Guests must adhere to the same rules and regulations that apply to Wenty Leagues Club Members, including but not limited to, dress regulations, behaviour, condition of entry and other Wenty Leagues Club Policies.
Wenty Leagues is a family friendly venue and we welcome children of all ages. To ensure the comfort, safety and enjoyment of all patrons, the following policy has been adopted for Minors when they are on Club premises:
• Minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult at all times whilst on Club premises. “Responsible Adult”, in relation to a Minor, means an adult who is:
a) parent, step-parent or guardian of the Minor,
b) the Minor’s parents spouse or de facto partner, or
c) for the time being standing in as the parent of the Minor.
• Minors are not allowed in the Wenty Cafe, Magpie Bar, TAB or the Gaming Floor area (even when accompanied by an adult).
• Minors will not be admitted to enter Club premises after 9pm.
• Minors are required to leave Club premises by 10.00pm Sunday to Thursday, and 10.30pm Friday to Saturday.
• Minors may be permitted to remain on Club premises after the above times in the following circumstances:
a) They are attending a private function.
b) They are dining in The Plaza in which case they must leave the Club as soon as they have finished dining.
c) Permission has been granted by the Duty Manager or Club Supervisor
• The accompanying responsible adult is to ensure that their Minor behaves in an appropriate manner when on Club premises and refrains from behaviour which is likely to cause discomfort or inconvenience to other patrons. Such behaviour includes, but is not limited to, loud squealing and running around unsupervised between tables.
