Dear Alumni and Friends, as we reflect on another impactful year at wentworth,

I am struck by the powerful sense of momentum that defines our university today. This year at Wentworth has been one of significant milestones, building upon the transformative plans shared in our Institutional Master Plan and reinforcing the core values that make Wentworth so exceptional.

We are immensely proud to celebrate 50 years of our Cooperative Education program, a testament to the hands‑on, experiential learning that has become a hallmark of a Wentworth education and a launchpad for thousands of successful careers. As you’ll read in these pages, this anniversary provides us all an opportunity to reflect on the program’s profound impact and its continued evolution to meet the needs of today’s industries. As industries evolve, so does our approach—integrating fields like Artificial Intelligence into our curriculum and co‑op experiences to ensure our graduates remain at the forefront of innovation.

This year also marked the resounding success of our Inaugural Wentworth Weekend. It was inspiring to welcome so many alumni back to campus for engaging events like the Alumni Panel, the Black & Gold reception, and the Gala. The energy and connection felt throughout the weekend reinforced the deep connections and lifelong bonds within our community. Further evidence of our forward trajectory is the continued strong enrollment at Wentworth. As Joe Dacey, our new VP of Enrollment Management, shares, this success is a direct result of our strategic investments and the growing recognition of a Wentworth education’s value.

Building Connections

Inaugural Wentworth Weekend Highlights Alumni and Student Achievements

BY EMILY MARRS Under a canopy of autumn colors, Wentworth Institute of Technology launched its inaugural Wentworth Weekend, transforming the campus into a vibrant hub of connection and celebration. More than just a series of events, the weekend underscored Wentworth’s dedication to preparing career-ready graduates and fostering a lifelong community.

Wentworth Celebrates: Honoring our Partners, Building the Future kicked things off, when President Mark A. Thompson presented the Co‑op and Career Lifetime Achievement Award to Joe Fallon ’77, Hon. ’17 (read more in “Wentworth’s Golden Ticket”).

The gala included an alumni panel, which centered on the built environment, as well as graduates’ career success. Participating were Wentworth Board of Trustees

“I’m happy to tell you that Wentworth is thriving,” said President Thompson to a Watson Auditorium audience.

The panel addressed critical industry trends and highlighted the impact of a Wentworth education.

“A Wentworth education is a great return on investment for any of our students that come here. Their careers are going to grow exponentially, and they are going to be part of such a thriving city that there’s great, rich history in,” explained Conti. “And we all have shaped this city in our own special ways through the projects we’ve worked on, through the people we’ve worked with, and the legacies we’re going to leave behind.”

Added MacNeil, “Don’t be afraid to ask the question.

at the environment around you and take advantage of a wonderful city for someone who wants to practice working in the built environment.”

Bond encouraged, “If you love this industry, lean into it.

Be willing to learn, be willing to listen. And then when you get to that point in your career, give it back. That’s really what I would ask of all students, Wentworth students, and anyone in this industry alike.”

Wentworth Weekend also featured a range of activities designed to engage the entire community, including student showcases (like the Leopard Launch Marketplace and Pitch Competition), athletic competitions between alumni and current students, and social gatherings that fostered connections across generations of Leopards.

Wentworth Professor Looks Back at Lasting Legacy

Curiosity and Connection: Ted Greene’s Approach to Education

Professor Emeritus Leon Cort, a fixture at Wentworth Institute of Technology, is nearing full retirement after 43 years, though his passion for teaching economics keeps him returning to campus. “For me, Wentworth is home,” he states.

Even after officially retiring three years ago, Cort continues to teach micro- and macroeconomics, driven by his love of the subject and the challenge of engaging students outside their primary fields of study. “I like the challenge of getting them excited about a course that’s not technically an academic focus of theirs,” he explains.

Joining Wentworth in 1982 after roles at Goodyear and Roxbury Community College, Cort found a lasting home and community. “I never regretted that I came here, and I’ve never been tempted to go elsewhere, because I’ve made so many lasting lifetime friends,” he reflects.

A recipient of the UMOJA and National Society of Black Engineers STEM ADVOCATE awards, Cort’s teaching has evolved alongside the ever-changing landscape of economics, focusing on sparking curiosity and critical thinking. “I teach to get students curious, and to get them to question generally accepted positions, especially in economics,” he says.

His connection to Wentworth extends beyond his professional life, with multiple family members attending and teaching at the university. He values the institution’s commitment to providing opportunities for diverse students, echoing the founder’s vision. Says Cort, “This school has created opportunities for students with a vast variety of backgrounds, and I would love to see that live on.”

Ted Greene’s 22-year career in the School of Engineering was defined by his dedication to student engagement. He cherished the unique personalities of each class and prioritized fostering meaningful discussions. “One of my favorite parts about teaching has always been getting to know the students and learning how to deliver the course material to engage each unique cohort,” he said.

With a background in material science and manufacturing, Greene transitioned to teaching after a decade in industry, driven by a love of learning. He aimed to capture students’ evolving interests, creating a classroom environment where curiosity was encouraged. He consistently reserved time for student questions, believing in the importance of a “classroom environment that was safe for curiosity and questioning—and for wanting to learn.”

Greene’s impact extended beyond the classroom, as former students often shared how his teachings proved valuable during their co-op experiences. He fostered lasting connections, celebrating their successes. He also valued his colleagues and actively participated in faculty governance.

Now retired, Greene looks forward to pursuing personal projects, exploring the corporate adoption of additive manufacturing, and enjoying quality time with family. He embraces the flexibility of his newfound freedom, ready for the next chapter.

Leading Enrollment Toward a Vibrant Future

5 Questions with Joe Dacey As Vice President of Enrollment Management, Joe Dacey, Ed.D. brings nearly 20 years of successful enrollment leadership experience to Wentworth, including impactful roles at Stonehill College, MARKETview Education Partners, and Boston University. He recently earned his Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership from Boston College, where his research focused on trends and impacts of college affordability.

President Mark A. Thompson praised Dacey’s “in-depth understanding of Wentworth’s strengths” upon Dacey’s hiring in June and noted his “collaborative and compassionate approach to leadership.”

In this Q&A, Dacey shares his insights on the current enrollment landscape and his approach to attracting and supporting the next generation of talented students.

Greg Abazorius: What brought you back to higher education, and why Wentworth?

Joe Dacey: The potential impact of higher education has become a personal and professional commitment that goes well beyond a job. This is a moment when students, families, and institutions are facing a novel set of decision dynamics. Having had the luxury of spending a year doing intense consulting and market analysis work at a variety of institutions, I felt an impulse to deliberately look for a place that could offer families something different, that could provide students an education that is truly unique, experiential, and relevant to the future.

So, it was the distinctive combination of what gives me a sense of purpose, the desire to be part of a community that is so student-focused, and the opportunity to contribute to an institution that’s well positioned for the future of higher education.

Abazorius: I think your background gives you a pretty informed view into the long-term health of higher ed. Do you feel like Wentworth is on the right path?

Dacey: There’s no question. We’re providing students with a learning dynamic and environment that they are clearly hungry for, and we’re able to deliver it in a place and in a manner that is difficult to find out there.

Wentworth’s recent increase in applications, the improvement in yield, positive momentum with retention— that’s an affirmation that priorities are aligned, and the right decisions are being made at the highest levels of the institution.

Abazorius: Your team is focused on prospective students, but you strike me as someone who also thinks about the big picture. How does the enrollment piece of things fit into the overall student experience?

Dacey: It’s more important than ever for our students to feel confident and empowered to serve as advocates for the institution. The conversations they’re having with their families, neighbors, classmates from high school, even their followers on social platforms, all carry significant weight. Investing in something that’s going to improve the student experience needs to take priority. That’s true both in terms of the students’ immediate learning objectives and long-term professional goals, outcomes, and satisfaction. Each student’s capacity and impulse to tell their own Wentworth story and reflect passionately on their education carries an incalculable reputational weight.

Abazorius: When you think about the next few years in terms of opportunities here at Wentworth specifically, what are you keeping your eye on?

Dacey: There is momentum around Wentworth’s position in the market. We’re more than 14% ahead in applications for the Class of 2029. I think this is one small reflection that the things students are choosing or prioritizing when deciding where to apply are the things that Wentworth is doing best.

We have an academic program portfolio that is aligned with some of society’s greatest needs. What does the world need? Competent, ethical, creative leaders in the industries most critical to the future economy. The applied sciences, architecture, construction management, information technology, climate resilience, cybersecurity, and engineering industries are expected to solve existential challenges posed by the issues like climate change, the proliferation of AI, America’s crumbling infrastructure, and energy dependence. We’re uniquely well-positioned to tell a compelling story about an education that is particularly worth it not only because these are rewarding careers but also because they are aligned with some of humanity’s greatest needs. The academic expertise is already here.

Abazorius: How could alumni or donors get more involved at the recruitment level, if they wanted to?

Dacey: One way is around time and story, whether it’s on your LinkedIn profile or other social media presence, the embrace and celebration for the level of influence Wentworth might have had in your life. Keep us informed of how your experiences here have helped you innovate and advance. The other way is physically being on campus.

New Chair, Leadership Named to Wentworth Board of Trustees One of Wentworth’s biggest champions over the years— Rose Conti—was named chairwoman of the Board of Trustees this year, leading a leadership group that also includes Doug Karam ’79, B.S. ’83, as vice chair; Travis McCready, Hon. ’22, as treasurer; and Rick Grundy ’03, Hon. ’21, as secretary.

Deeply involved in the university community, Conti— who is vice president of Interiors and Special Projects, Life Science at Lee Kennedy Company—is the first woman to be elected as chair of the board, of which she has been a member since 2020. A Class of 2012 Construction Management graduate, she previously served as president of the Wentworth Alumni Association, is a member of the Women@Wentworth programming committee, was formerly the chair of Wentworth’s University Advisors, and was given the Gold Leopard Award in 2017.

Karam, founder and president of KVAssociates Inc., has been a member of the Wentworth Corporation since 2012, and has served on the board of trustees since 2014. He is currently a member of the Facilities, Long Range Planning, and Academic Affairs committees.

With more than 25 years of experience leading public, private, and nonprofit ventures, McCready is executive director and national practice leader for Jones Lang LaSalle’s (JLL) Life Sciences Industry Practice, and the former president and CEO of Massachusetts Life Sciences Center. He received an honorary degree from Wentworth in 2022.

Grundy serves as president and COO for AVTECH Software Inc, having initially joined the company as a Wentworth co‑op student in 2001. Elected to the board in 2023, he is the chair of the Trusteeship and Governance Committee, and is a member of the Executive, Compensation, and Inclusive Excellence committees.

He received an honorary degree from Wentworth in 2021.

Joining the Wentworth Board of Trustees as new members this year are David Chang, Paul Chrestensen ’73, Scott Epstein ’78, Cyndee Hoagland, and Mark Stoever ’97, Hon. ’16.

A Thank You to Greg Janey It is with deep gratitude that Wentworth Institute of Technology acknowledges Greg Janey for his recently completed tenure as Chair of the Board of Trustees.

Janey’s leadership and dedication to Wentworth have been admirable, leaving a lasting positive impact on its community.

A proud Wentworth alumnus, Janey has had a longstanding connection to the university. His distinguished 40-year career as President and CEO of Janey Construction Management and Consulting Inc. brought invaluable expertise to the Board. Elected as Chair in 2019, Janey’s tenure was characterized by a commitment to progress and transformation.

Throughout his service on the Board of Trustees, which began in 2013, Janey has been instrumental in helping to guide Wentworth through a period of significant growth.

And his passion for education and community spirit extends beyond the boardroom. His scholarship program for Boston Public School students in STEM exemplifies his belief in education’s power to change lives and communities, a value central to Wentworth’s mission.

Wentworth’s Golden Ticket: 50 Years of Co‑op Success

The story begins in 1974 with a simple request. Joe Fallon—a then enterprising Wentworth Civil Engineering student—approached his neighbor, Boston-area developer Thomas J. Flatley, seeking a part-time job. Flatley, who was developing apartments in Malden, Mass. at the time, recognized the value of practical experience and contacted the director of the Malden Redevelopment Authority (MRA) to assist in finding Fallon a part-time position there. This seemingly ordinary interaction between neighbors sparked an extraordinary legacy, marking the genesis of Wentworth’s co‑op program.

50 YEARS OF CO‑OP SUCCESS

This year marks the golden anniversary of Wentworth Institute of Technology’s renowned cooperative education (co‑op) program. For half a century, this program has been the Institute’s not-so-secret weapon, forging a path for students to gain real-world experience, build invaluable connections, and launch successful careers.

Fallon went on to establish The Fallon Company in 1993, becoming one of the most successful real estate developers in Boston history. An avid philanthropist, he is currently chair of the company, and his son and fellow Wentworth alum, Michael Fallon, Master of Construction Management ’16, is the CEO. Joe Fallon spoke during Wentworth Weekend this fall at a campus event honoring him with the inaugural Co‑ops & Careers Lifetime Achievement Award.

“The truth is that when I came to Wentworth, I really needed discipline and Wentworth was a school that had discipline,” he told the Watson Auditorium crowd. But despite the amount he was learning, his one complaint was that there was not a good way to study and earn income at the same time. Enter MRA, which said they would hire Fallon, but that he had to work during the day.

THE FLATLEY LEGACY: SEEDS OF CO-OP SUCCESS The impact of the Flatley family’s generosity is deeply felt at Wentworth.

Thomas J. Flatley’s own experience as a student here, followed by his grandson Thomas J. Flatley II’s graduation from the Construction Management program, highlights a multi-generational connection.

Dan Flatley, Thomas J.’s son and a Wentworth Trustee Emeritus, continues this legacy of support through his work with The Flatley Foundation. The Foundation’s transformative $1.75 million gift in 2020 established an endowed scholarship fund, empowering local students to pursue their passions in the life sciences at Wentworth.

“I approached Professor (John) Heinstadt and said, ‘I have a class with you in the afternoons. I’m going to propose that we put a program together where I can work in the afternoons and get credit for it,’” Fallon remembered.

“He really didn’t reject it right away.”

Heinstadt would ultimately approve the idea, freeing Fallon to work for—and get paid by—MRA, provided Fallon could pass a “final exam.”

“I asked, ‘Well, how are you going to do a final exam?’

And he said to think about what I’ve been working on,” said Fallon, who put together a high-velocity wind instrument for Heinstadt based on environmental work he had been conducting. Heinstadt accepted the work and Wentworth’s co‑op program was officially born.

The Numbers Speak for Themselves

The impact of the co‑op program is undeniable. A total of 28 Engineering students punched the clock at their respective co‑op jobs in 1975, and Denise Dostoler became the first woman co‑op student to graduate from Wentworth. In the decades since, the program has only continued to expand.

Since the fall of 2014 alone, more than 18,000 Wentworth students have completed at least two co‑ops and were employed by more than 3,700 employers.

Data from the Class of 2023 reveals that 93% of graduates were employed or in graduate school within six months of graduation. The average starting salary was $71,000 and 98% of those employed are working in their respective fields of study. And one in three Class of 2023 students were hired directly by their co‑op employer.

More Than Just a Job

Wentworth’s co‑op program isn’t just about getting a job; it’s about gaining a competitive edge. By alternating between periods of full-time work and full-time study, students immerse themselves in their chosen fields, applying classroom knowledge to real-world challenges, and developing a clearer sense of their career goals.

Luana Mesquita, Architecture ’25, has completed co‑ops at Nault Architects and SMMA. She praises the co‑op program’s ability to shine a light on what working full time will be like after graduation. “I have this adult life experience.

I do real work and make my own money,” she says. “I’ve been learning and understanding so much. Sometimes you have to go out into the real world and just do the work.”

Joe Galluzzo, Construction Management ’24, feels similarly. He is also an example of the 40% of Wentworth graduates who are offered a full-time position with their co‑op employers, becoming an assistant superintendent with Consigli within the last year.

Rick Grundy began his time at AVTECH Software as a co-op and today holds the position of President and CEO.

“[Co‑op] was really good for me and my knowledge of the industry. Not only do I get to see things I learned in class come into play, but it’s also good to see what I want to do and what I know that I don’t want to do.”

For Aymene Bali, Biomedical Engineering ’25, a co‑op at MGH earned him skills related to his degree and beyond.

“I gained hands-on experience in troubleshooting medical devices, which is crucial for a biomedical engineer.

I also improved my research and communication skills by interacting with vendors and gathering detailed technical information,” he said.

Partners in Success

At the heart of Wentworth’s co‑op program is the Co‑ops & Careers Office, led by Assistant Provost Robbin Beauchamp. This dedicated team provides comprehensive support to students throughout their co‑op journey, offering personalized guidance, co‑op preparation, and career advancement activities.

The office also works closely with prospective employers to help them recruit the talent they need.

“We act as a vital bridge between students and companies. We actively collaborate, understanding their needs and showcasing the skills our students possess,” Beauchamp said. “This partnership is essential for ensuring a strong talent pipeline.”

year, including preeminent names across a spectrum of industries. The success of the fair underscores how far the co‑op program has come and the importance of industry and Wentworth collaborating together.

“We as industry professionals need to be involved at Wentworth,” said Chairwoman of Wentworth’s Board of Trustees Rose Conti, Building Construction Technology ’90, Construction Management ’12. “We need to train the students in what the workforce environment is like.”

Conti, who serves as vice president of Interiors and Special Projects/Life Science at Lee Kennedy Co., has long been involved with Wentworth students, attending various events and acting as a mentor. By engaging more with students, she says, the more that hiring managers can assess a student’s readiness and align their expectations accordingly.

“We want them to know what’s important and what’s truly going to be applied when they come to a job and work on a site or work in an office,” said Conti. “The intersection for us where we all meet is the great opportunity we have to change and shape their lives through this great program that’s been set up.”

“Our co‑op program—thanks to industry partners—is the gold standard,” he said.

Evolving with the Times

Over the past 50 years, Wentworth’s co‑op program has continuously evolved to meet the changing needs of students and the demands of the modern workforce. The program has expanded to encompass a wider range of industries and disciplines, providing students with diverse opportunities to gain experience in their chosen fields.

The Co‑ops and Careers office has also demonstrated remarkable adaptability, transitioning to virtual formats for events like career fairs and employer information sessions in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. They also launched the “Inside Industry Right Now” series, bringing together employers, students, staff, and faculty to discuss the pandemic’s impact on the workplace and the evolving skills employers seek.

Looking Ahead: The Future of Co‑op at Wentworth

Wentworth remains steadfast in its commitment to providing students with the best possible co‑op experiences. The future of the program focuses on expanding partnerships with industry leaders, preparing students for success, and adapting to the changing world of work. As of fall 2024, students are now required to complete “Introduction to Cooperative Education,” a class designed to equip them with the skills and knowledge necessary for a successful co‑op search and workplace experience.

With a strong commitment to innovation and a focus on student success, Wentworth’s co‑op program is poised to remain a cornerstone of the institution’s educational mission for years to come. The program’s success not only benefits individual students but also contributes significantly to the development of a highly skilled workforce in the region and beyond, solidifying Wentworth’s reputation as a leader in experiential education.

Artificial intelligence. It’s no longer a futuristic fantasy. AI is here, it’s real, and it’s rapidly transforming the world as we know it. Wentworth Institute of Technology recognizes both the potential and the challenges of AI and is actively preparing its community for this technological shift while being excited about the future.

Balancing Innovation with Responsibility

Wentworth is committed to embracing AI while ensuring its responsible implementation. President Mark A. Thompson and Provost and Executive Vice President Sophia Maggelakis established an AI Steering Committee, a multi-departmental group charged with developing a comprehensive AI policy and process, incorporating input from faculty, staff, students, and external experts.

“Together, we can harness the power of AI to drive positive change and uphold the highest standards of academic excellence,” said Maggelakis, noting that AI subcommittees have also formed across Wentworth’s schools.

Vish Paradkar, VP of Digital Technology Services, emphasized the need for a unified approach. “We want to explore AI but be cautious as well,” he said. He added that while some existing university policies might apply, a separate AI policy and a campaign to promote it are necessary.

Associate General Counsel Beth Devonshire explained, “Many policies we’ve seen have focused only on academics.

AI impacts everyone, so we wanted to make sure our policy is inclusive, and that people understand guardrails as we encourage its use.”

Devonshire noted the Steering Committee, comprising representatives from various departments, aims to create a unified approach to policymaking by leveraging their diverse viewpoints. She also emphasized that the guidelines will be fluid, adapting to the rapidly evolving nature of AI technology.

Academically Focused

While AI is a new phenomenon to some, Wentworth has already integrated AI into its curriculum: the Applied Computer Science master’s program offers an AI/machine learning concentration; Biomedical Engineering students study AI in disease diagnosis; and courses cover AI for Gaming, Classical AI, and Embedded AI. Maggelakis and Thompson plan to introduce new AIfocused courses and programs. “The demand for AI skills in the job market is rapidly increasing,” said Maggelakis.

“Our students should learn about AI, and they should learn by using AI.” They also stressed the importance of addressing ethical and societal implications of AI, like bias and privacy. Plans include integrating AI modules into existing courses, highlighting real-world applications, and using project-based assessments. Wentworth’s seven-year academic master plan will also incorporate AI-related provisions.

The Importance of Ethics

“Ensuring AI is used ethically and responsibly is very important for maintaining integrity, fairness, and transparency,” said Thompson.

Wentworth has been developing frameworks and policies around AI use.

“Such work will ensure that AI systems and their purposes are clearly communicated to all stakeholders, and that we protect the privacy and data of students, faculty, staff, and other stakeholders, and implement robust security measures to prevent misuse or breaches of AI systems,” Thompson explained.

Workshops and seminars will foster an ethical AI culture, addressing topics like bias and privacy.

Robbin Beauchamp, Assistant Provost for Cooperative Education and Career Development, highlighted the importance of teaching ethical AI use: “Ethics need to be taught, and you need to be discerning. AI doesn’t have all the answers and sometimes it makes stuff up.”

Her team helps students use AI tools effectively, including for resume and cover letter creation, while ensuring the final product reflects the student’s own voice. “If somebody uses AI to create a cover letter, we coach them on how to turn it into their own voice,” said Beauchamp. “You don’t want to show up as a different person in an actual interview.”

AI Training

Wentworth is committed to training its faculty and staff in AI. “Training is essential to ensure faculty can effectively integrate AI into their teaching, scholarship, and creative activities and service roles,” said Maggelakis.

Professional development funds will support workshops and online courses. Paradkar’s team is exploring online resources for staff, and Beauchamp’s team recently completed an AI boot camp.

“Our advisors should be available to students for AI-related advice just like they are for any other careerrelated topic,” said Beauchamp.

Technology Services and the ATLAS Center (formerly Teaching and Learning Collaborative) are developing an “AI@Wentworth Guidelines” document to facilitate AI exploration.

An Exciting Future

“Being open to change is in our DNA, and we see AI as a new wave of technology that we need to be nimble about,” said Paradkar. “We want to transform our operations and curriculum to ensure students are marketable and that our operations leverage the new tech. For faculty and staff, people want to make mundane tasks easier so that they can focus on what they are passionate about and be more efficient.”

Technology Services is evaluating AI tools and exploring infrastructure needs for increased processing power. Beauchamp’s team is investigating AI for creating sample resumes.

“Integrating AI into university operations can enhance efficiency, reduce costs, and improve the overall student and staff experience,” said Thompson.

Potential AI applications include managing bookings, automating form processing, advanced chatbots, energy

optimization, enhanced security, and intelligent tutoring systems. Thompson and Maggelakis will involve the community in AI implementation, begin with pilot projects, and partner with industry and other universities.

“As a university, we are uniquely positioned to lead the way in navigating this landscape,” said Thompson.

“By fully exploring and leveraging AI, we can enhance our educational offerings, advance research capabilities, improve administrative efficiency, and make a positive impact on the community and beyond.”

IN REMEMBRANCE

Wentworth Remembers Its Champions This past year, the Wentworth community mourned the loss of several valued members, including former Board of Trustees members and dedicated faculty.

Their combined vision, generosity, and steadfast dedication to Wentworth’s values have left an enduring legacy on our institution. As we remember them, we reflect on their remarkable contributions to our university and extend our deepest condolences to their families, colleagues, and loved ones.

Robert Boyden A Norwood, Mass. native, Bob earned associate degrees in Machine Construction and Tool Design (1952) and Engineering Technology (1958) from Wentworth. His connection to the institute was deep, following in the footsteps of his father, Howard C. Boyden, a 1927 alumnus.

After serving as a fighter pilot in the Air Force and in the Air Force Reserve (retiring as a Lt. Colonel), Bob joined his father’s plastics company, eventually leading it as president after its acquisition by General Mills. He later founded his own successful venture, Boyden Molding, Inc., which he ran until retirement.

Bob’s commitment to community was extensive. He served as founding director of the accessibility workshop PRIDE, president of the Taunton Rotary Club, and held leadership positions at Bristol County Savings Bank, United Way of Taunton, Morton Hospital, and the Taunton Development Corp. He was also Senior Warden of St. John’s Episcopal Church. His dedication to Wentworth culminated in serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for eight years (1992–2000), the first alumnus to hold this position in 125 years. He received an honorary Doctorate in Engineering Technology from Wentworth and delivered the summer commencement address in 1998.

A deep passion for Wentworth led Bob and his wife, Carol, to include Wentworth in their estate plans. “There is no question that any success I’ve had in life is primarily due to Wentworth,” said Bob in 2018. “It seems proper to give back. I’m happy to put my name on the list of those who have given in the hopes that it will inspire others to donate as well.”

Jan Piccarini For 18 years, Jan served as Office Manager for Baker Testing Services in Rockland before retiring in 2016.

Simultaneously, she worked at Mass. Fire Prevention Inc., where she served as Finance Director since 1984.

Following the loss of her son, Michael, a 1998 Wentworth graduate, Jan and her husband, Alan Smith, established the Michael R. Piccarini Scholarship Fund in his memory. Through an annual golf tournament, they tirelessly raised over $200,000, significantly increasing the scholarship’s impact. Initially supporting one student, the fund now awards $5,000 each to three architecture students demonstrating financial need.

Jan’s dedication extended to serving on the Wentworth Corporation and receiving an Honorary Alumni Award in 2016. Her unwavering commitment has supported over 35 students, providing more than $140,000 in scholarships since 2012, ensuring Michael’s memory lives on through the success of future architects.

“My son knew in elementary school that he wanted to become an architect, and Wentworth allowed him to achieve his dream,” she said in 2022. “Establishing a scholarship in Mike’s name, and donating to Wentworth, allow Mike’s memory to live on in other students’ ability to pursue their dreams.”

Jonathan Ripley Originally from Staten Island, Jon was a professor of English and Philosophy at Wentworth for more than 40 years. Adored by students and colleagues, he was ultimately named Professor Emeritus. He co-authored textbooks, Writing by Design and Communicating for Business Professionals, and recently completed a memoir. A kind and gentle man, Jon was a supportive friend, avid golfer, gelato lover, and lifelong scholar.

Kenneth Carr Ken Carr, a microwave pioneer, left an indelible mark on technology and medicine. Born in Cambridge, Mass. in 1932, Ken’s career began after graduating from Tufts University and serving in the Army Reserve. He contributed to radar systems for Philco and Sylvania before co‑founding Ferrotec Inc. In 1962, his team developed a crucial ferrite switch for a U.S. spy plane, enabling critical photographs of Soviet missile sites during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Ken also consulted for NASA and pioneered microwave medical applications. Crucially, he convinced the FDA of the safety of microwaves in medicine, leading to life-saving technologies like blood warmers and cancer detection radiometers. His entrepreneurial spirit led him to found Microwave Medical Systems, earning him 56 patents and an honorary doctorate from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 1992. Ken also served on Wentworth’s Board of Trustees.

A recipient of the IEEE’s Microwave Pioneer Award, Ken dedicated his life to innovation, co-founding Advanced Cardiac Therapeutics (ACT) to develop microwave ablation for heart tissue and later forming Applied ThermoLogic (ATL) in 2013. Demonstrating his commitment to education, he served as a STEM Ambassador for Maine, lecturing to young students, and became a trustee of the Dearborn Foundation, providing engineering scholarships.

Marilyn Stern Marilyn was a dedicated educator and passionate advocate for the humanities. After earning degrees from Skidmore, Boston University, and Boston College, she taught at Wentworth Institute of Technology, inspiring students to appreciate literature and the power of language.

A champion of faculty, she served as Federation President, strengthening support and recognition.

Marilyn taught at Wentworth for more than 30 years, achieving the rank of Professor of English/Humanities and serving as Academic Department Head and Professor of English from 1996 to 2001. Her students could often be found at her home for the holidays, and many would visit with her years after graduating. She was a passionate orator with a love of Shakespeare and inspiring critical thinking. She continued to publish research and present at conferences after her retirement in 2017.

Beyond the classroom, Marilyn was a devoted mother and grandmother, a talented singer, and an accomplished cook known for her legendary chicken soup. Her lifelong love of learning and commitment to fostering intellectual curiosity touched countless lives.

Carl E. Petersen Born in Winthrop and raised in Marblehead, Carl graduated from Salem State University (1964) and Northeastern University (1966). He dedicated his career to education, beginning at Northeastern before joining Wentworth Institute of Technology, where he served as an assistant professor of social sciences for 44 years. A passionate advocate, Carl served on the Salem School Committee for over 28 years, including a term as Vice Chairman, and was active in numerous civic organizations.

Carl was instrumental in establishing the North Shore Regional Vocational School District and was appointed Honorary State Auditor. Above all, Carl cherished his family, finding joy in their Maine home and golfing with friends. He will be remembered for his dedication to education, community service, and his deep love for his family.
