SYDNEY HARBOUR ICEWORKS
As humans we are drawn to the sea for many reasons. It’s our ancestral home where life first evolved. It represents voyages of old, food that sustains life, adventure, mystery, danger, safety, hope, companionship and a constantly evolving beauty.
In many ways – the sea strips our lives down to its barest elements. Survival, warm, cold, an endless horizon, the tide comes, the tide comes out.
But the sea is not simple. It’s full of places we can’t get to let alone see. And questions, creatures and interconnections we’re barely able to understand.
Like the sea – Gav’s ice works connect us to something visceral. Colours we can’t help being drawn towards. Shapes and movement that seem familiar and make us feel good.
Also like the sea – they seem simple but aren’t.
Each the result of decades of trial and error. Techniques that anyone can try, but no one else has the heart, determination, curiosity, skill and perspective to achieve. Each moment and touch in their creation has the opportunity to take a new path, create new details and become something different entirely as they freeze and melt in different places, temperatures and environments.
For me – Gav’s ice works take me to where I grew up. The greatest harbour in the world joined to the endless ocean by the heads just a few kilometres from where we are now. Beautiful, endlessly appealing and where something different can and will happen no matter how often and how closely you look at it.
