From our Principal The Foundation’s work has touched every corner of our School. Through the Renaissance Women’s Scholarship Fund and the DalCorp Scholarships Program, which celebrated its own remarkable 20th anniversary, we have opened doors for talented students whose backgrounds and experiences enrich our entire community.

These scholarships represent more than financial support; they embody our conviction that potential should never be constrained by circumstance.

Looking at the achievements of the Wenona Foundation in 2024, I am struck by the profound impact that comes from a community united in purpose. The Wenona Foundation’s 25th anniversary year demonstrated what is possible when generosity meets vision; when individuals who believe in the transformative power of education choose to invest in young women who will shape tomorrow.

Your contributions have enabled us to maintain the state-of-the-art facilities that support exceptional teaching and learning. From the Athenaeum to the spaces where our students collaborate, create, and discover their capabilities, each investment strengthens the foundation upon which young women build their futures.

The events throughout 2024 - from the Sports Lunch that raised an extraordinary $250,000 to the gatherings that brought together Alumnae across generations, reflected something essential about Wenona: we are a community that understands the responsibility we hold to

those who follow. Whether through financial gifts, dedicated time, or professional expertise shared with students, each contribution creates ripples that extend far beyond what we might immediately see.

As we look ahead, our commitment remains clear. We will continue ensuring scholarships for deserving students and building facilities that enable innovative teaching. We will foster the connections between current students, Alumnae, and friends of the School that make our community so distinctive.

As the Foundation celebrates its 25th anniversary, we continue to honour the foresight of past generations by ensuring today’s Wenonians benefit from exceptional opportunities.

Through scholarships that open Wenona’s doors to deserving girls and capital projects such as the Athenaeum, opened in 2020, the Foundation’s impact on the School has been remarkable.

The Foundation works to provide state-of-the-art teaching and learning facilities, supporting the School for both today and tomorrow.

Events Game Changers: Wenona Foundation Sports Lunch The Wenona Foundation’s Sports Lunch on 3 May celebrated women in sport while raising an extraordinary $250,000 for the Renaissance Women’s Scholarship Fund.

The event featured a stellar lineup of sporting figures including as MC, former professional AFL player, Jude Bolton, along with a panel comprising Executive General Manager Operations, Rugby World Cup Australia,

Jane Fernandez, Chairman of the Sydney Swans, Andrew Pridham AO, Director at Maverick Sports Management, Rob Juric, Former Olympian, Dr Hannah Buckling, and professional National Rugby League Women’s player, Jada Taylor. The hugely successful event far exceeded its $200,000 target, enabling a full scholarship for a student in Years 7 to 12 for 2025.

The Athenaeum’s West Commons hosted a special anniversary dinner in early August, marking two decades of the DalCorp Scholarships Program. The evening brought together past and present Scholars, donors, and educators to commemorate a program that has opened doors for talented young women since 2005.

Current Boarding Captain Gemma Turkington shared her journey: “When I discovered Wenona and its DalCorp Scholarship, I was convinced it would be a good fit. It was such a great feeling when I found out I had been selected.”

The Wenona Foundation International Family Breakfast welcomed families from diverse cultural backgrounds to connect with each other and the broader School community over breakfast at the Independent Theatre on June 2024.

Past scholars include Camilla Guest, now specialising in Family and Criminal Law, and Michelle Picone, who works in workplace conduct investigation.

Both credit the scholarship with transforming their lives.

The gathering brought together international families and other members of the Wenona Parents’ Association with educators from the Senior Leadership Team, providing an opportunity to strengthen relationships and ensure every family feels genuinely included

in School life. Principal Dr Briony Scott and Executive Director of Wenona Foundation and Advancement Ms Marie Soghomonian, addressed the group, emphasising the value of a diverse parent body.

Meanwhile, Wenona Parents’ Association President, Ms Sharmila Soorian, spoke at length about the many pathways for families to engage more deeply with the School.

The breakfast underscored our commitment to creating an inclusive community where families from all backgrounds feel welcomed and supported, enriching the Wenona experience for everyone.

Renaissance Legacy Luncheon The Wenona Foundation’s inaugural Legacy Luncheon at The Langham Hotel brought together Alumnae, Bequestors, and Custodians whose generosity continues to shape the School’s future.

Executive Director of Wenona Foundation and Advancement Marie Soghomonian welcomed guests, sharing her own connection to Wenona. “As an Alumna from the Class of 1992, a past parent, a past Foundation Board member, a donor and a Bequestor, I understand the many ways we can contribute to Wenona’s future,” she said.

The gathering included members of the Wenona Board of Governors, Foundation Board members, Alumnae, and past Board members. A highlight was the launch of the Renaissance Legacy

Circle, honouring Bequestors and Custodians who have chosen to leave a lasting legacy.

Then Principal Dr Briony Scott spoke about how the community’s generosity directly impacts students’ learning experiences, including through attracting and retaining exceptional educators who inspire students to reach their full potential.

Foundation Cocktail Party The Wenona Foundation Thank You Cocktail Party brought together donors and supporters in West Commons to acknowledge the meaningful impact of their contributions to the School.

The evening recognised how Foundation support enhances educational opportunities and

enriches the experiences of Wenona students. Through the generosity of donors, the School continues to provide resources and programs that nurture potential and create pathways for young women to flourish.

A significant moment was the launch of the Renaissance Women’s Scholarship, established to provide full tuition support for a Year 7 student in 2025.

This scholarship embodies the Foundation’s commitment to making a Wenona education accessible to exceptional students who might otherwise face financial barriers.

The event also honoured outgoing Principal Dr Scott with the presentation of a specially commissioned artwork titled ‘It Takes a Village’ by Deputy Head of Boarding and professional artist, Ms Angela Ferreira.

Volunteer Thank You Breakfast

Volunteer Thank You Breakfast Over 60 volunteers gatherded in October for a breakfast celebration recognising their profound contribution to Wenona’s vibrant community. The event, hosted by the Wenona Foundation, acknowledged the volunteers who enhance our School environment and enrich students’ academic and social experiences through their time, effort, and resources.

The majority of attendees were members of the Wenona Parents’ Association (WPA),

whose efforts contribute to Wenona Foundation fundraising. “The WPA does a tremendous job in promoting a strong partnership between the School and the parent community through its many activities and events,” said WPA Treasurer, Mr Haydn O’Brien.

Parent Volunteer, Ms Michele Baric has overseen the Wenona Uniform Sale every year for a decade: “The Breakfast was a lovely gesture emphasising Wenona’s gratitude to its parents,” she said.

The celebration reinforced the vital connection between volunteering and our motto, Ut Prosim, that I may serve.

New Parents’ Welcome Dinner

New Parents’ Welcome Dinner The Wenona Foundation New Parent Dinner brought together families beginning their Wenona journey for an evening of genuine connection at the Independent Theatre’s Seaborn Room.

New parents joined current families, Wenona Parents’ Association members, Foundation representatives, Board members, and staff for a relaxed, conversational gathering. The evening reflected the School’s understanding that welcoming new families requires the personal connections that transform them

into valued community members.

The Independent Theatre’s graceful architecture provided an ideal setting as conversations flowed naturally over dinner.

New parents discovered shared experiences and began forming supportive networks, while current parents deepened their friendships and shared insights and staff offered perspectives on how Wenona’s programs and values translate into daily student life.

These early relationships form the foundation for collaborative partnerships between the School and home, creating a supportive ecosystem where young women flourish throughout their years at Wenona.

Celebrating 20 Years of DalCorp Scholarships The DalCorp Scholarship Program was established in 2005 as a partnership between the Wenona Foundation and The DalCorp Foundation.

In 2024, we celebrated the 20th anniversary of this transformative program that provides excellence in education for young women who would not otherwise be able to attend Wenona.

Tens of Wenona DalCorp Scholars have now graduated from the School. Creative, resilient thinkers, they are contributing to society in a vast range of ways, guided by our values of Courage, Strength, Grace, Wisdom, and Kindness.

Camilla Guest (2007) Camilla specialises in Family and Criminal Law in a familyowned practice in Dubbo, having completed a Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Law through the University of New England and a Masters in Applied Law (Family Law) in 2017. “The DalCorp Scholarship helped me become the person I wanted to be and I’m grateful for the generosity I’ve received. Wenona gave me the courage and confidence to pursue my career path,” Camilla says.

Michelle Picone (2014) Currently employed at a consultancy firm, Michelle assists an independent investigator conducting reviews of workplace conduct. She completed her law degree at the University of

Sydney in 2020. According to Michelle, “Being awarded the DalCorp Scholarship opened up a world of opportunities for me.

Through accessing a Wenona education, I was taught to be an independent and critical thinker.

Without the DalCorp Scholarship, I would not have attended this amazing School”.

Jada Taylor (2021) A National Women’s Rugby League fullback from Tamworth, Jada Taylor starred for the Sharks in their maiden campaign after making the switch from the Roosters. Following a year out due to injury, she returned in August 2025, helping the Sharks to a rousing defeat of the Warriors. Beyond the field, Jada serves as Indigenous Program Coordinator for the Sharks.

Reflecting her love of children, she’s studying to be a primary school teacher.

Evett Baranov (2009) From criminology lecture halls to Silicon Valley, Evett Baranov’s career demonstrates the value of following an unconventional path. Following a master’s degree and IBM internship, she joined Workday, becoming Global Digital ABM Lead for EMEA and APAC. She championed inclusive marketing across five regions.

Now Head of Global Marketing at LEAP Legal Software, Evett builds the company’s global marketing organisation, bringing creativity and empathy to campaigns connecting people across cultures.

Alumnae: Past and Future The connection between Wenonians spans generations, creating a network of accomplished women whose commitment to the School and to each other has shaped Wenona’s development in remarkable ways.

This spirit of connection dates to the School’s earliest days.

Some Alumnae felt so strongly about Wenona’s mission that they returned to lead it. Former Woodstock student, Miss Dorothy Messiter, served as Headmistress in 1920. Alumna Miss Edith Ralston succeeded her, purchasing Wenona that same year and serving as its head until 1963. Dr Briony Scott, Principal from 2011 to 2024, was another Alumna who exemplified this enduring bond between past and present.

A Legacy of Service When the Old Girls’ Union was founded in 1927, its purpose was clear: unite current and past students, support the School’s work, and maintain connections across the years.

Today’s Alumnae continue these objectives, serving as an advisory committee to the Principal and supporting the School’s evolution.

The tradition of Alumnae philanthropy began early. Miss Ralston supported the Nicholson daughters when their parents

travelled overseas, providing them space in the Boarding House. In 1960, the Old Girls’ Union established the Edith Hooke Memorial Scholarship for students demonstrating excellence in scholarship, sport and citizenship who needed financial support to complete their final two years. Alumnae financed this scholarship through creative means, including a cookbook they compiled and sold in 1978.

Ms Barbara Jackson, who led the School from 1967 to 1994, articulated the philosophy that continues to guide Wenona: “I have tried to further the School’s motto Ut Prosim, that I may serve by preparing students academically to meet the challenges of the world beyond School while not losing sight of the fact that a Wenona student should be a contributing member of the community by sharing her talents and her concern for others less fortunate than herself.”

This philosophy lives on. As parent and Alumna Ms Michele Baric, who has supported the annual Second-Hand Uniform Sale for a decade, reflects: “As an Alumna familiar with the School motto, Ut Prosim, I think it is very important for students to see that service does not finish at the School gate but is a lifelong commitment.”

Connecting Across Generations Today, the Wenona Foundation strengthens these connections through professional networking opportunities, career insight panels, mentoring programs, reunions and social gatherings.

Each year they present the Alumnae Spirit Award at Foundation Day, recognising a Senior College student who has contributed to the broader community through significant acts of service.

Throughout 2024, accomplished Alumnae returned to campus to share their professional journeys with current students. Panel discussions covered fields from finance to medicine to law, with a special International Women’s Day event bringing together voices from across industries.

These conversations offered current students something invaluable: a glimpse of the paths that lie ahead from women who have walked them.

The Foundation also supported milestone reunions throughout the year. The White and Blue Reunion, in its tenth year, brought together 60 Alumnae who departed the School four or more decades ago. Among the guests was Mr Robert Peel, whose connection to Wenona dates to 1941 when he attended Kindergarten, a fascinating glimpse into the School’s history when boys were part of the community until 1953.

A Life of Service: Vicki Schramko’s Enduring Connection When Vicki Schramko (Edwards, 1962) returned to the School not long ago to speak with Year 3 students, she brought with her more than seven decades of Wenona memories. She shared stories of Miss Ralston’s inspiring assemblies, of her mother catching the evening bus to volunteer as the first secretary of the Wenona Association, and of the School’s Junior Red Cross Club that would shape the direction of her life.

“I joined Wenona when I was 10, so I’ve been a member of this community for a very long time!”

Vicki reflects. She says her feelings of membershi come not only from simply about attending the School but embracing a philosophy of service that would define her decades beyond her graduation.

Former Headmistress Miss Ralston, whom Vicki remembers as “a brilliant and inspiring woman,” worked closely with Red Cross headquarters and established her ‘Special Squad’ of Wenona students who were Junior Red Cross members.

Through this program, Vicki discovered capabilities she did not know she possessed.

“I learned so much through my Red Cross association leadership skills, organisational skills, the ability to delegate to effectively achieve what needed to be done.”

These skills proved foundational.

The head of Junior Red Cross, recognising Vicki’s abilities, asked her to become an organiser of all

clubs in New South Wales and recruit more school principals to build up Junior Red Cross within the state school system.

It was an extremely challenging role, but her Wenona training had prepared her well. When she identified that 12-yearolds in need were minding their siblings during school holidays without proper skills, she started a babysitter’s course. “All my experience needed to conduct this work came from my years as a young Red Cross Special Squad member at Wenona.”

Her Red Cross career advanced through various roles, eventually leading to her appointment as Director of Voluntary and Community Hospital Services, responsible for 30,000 volunteers.

She later spent five years at the Smith Family, continuing her focus on community service.

One of her most fulfilling roles, however, has been unpaid.

Together with her husband Peter, her ‘soulmate’ through 59 years of marriage, Vicki completed a Certificate IV in Mental Health.

Drawing on their own lived experience with mental health challenges, they supported clients who needed more ongoing care than psychiatrists and mental health nurses could provide. “We would take them out on picnics, visit them in nursing homes.” Among those she supported were Wenona Alumnae, including Libby Evans, the dux of her class, with whom she stayed connected through online cups of tea during COVID-19.

Now living in Queensland, Vicki continues to reach out to Alumnae in her area. “It is not always easy to make new friends later in life, so connecting with Alumnae is a great way to expand your friendship group.” She previously led the Melbourne Old Girls’ Union for three years and maintains friendships across generations, including with internationally recognised musician and composer Christine Pan (2015), who performed at the 2024 Celebration of Wenona concert.

Vicki’s story exemplifies what Miss Ralston and subsequent Wenona leaders have always emphasised: that service does not finish at the School gate but becomes a lifelong commitment.

Through her career, her volunteer work, and her ongoing connection to the Alumnae community, Vicki demonstrates that Ut Prosim, that I may serve, is not simply a motto but a way of living.

Renaissance Legacy Circle Building our Future Together The decision to include Wenona in your Will is deeply personal.

As a Wenona Custodian, you become part of a community that shares your commitment to this vision. The Foundation hosts gatherings where Custodians connect with each other and with current students, witnessing firsthand the impact of their planned generosity.
