Spotlight on South Korea

South Korea reopened its borders to international visitors on 1 April after two years. What is it about this country that appeals to so many? Is it the history dating back to centuries, or perhaps the eclectic combination of traditional culture and fast-paced cites? Or perhaps it’s the abundance of natural landscapes, stunning coastlines, and endless food options to enjoy. We delve deeper into this exciting and intriguing nation and some of the must-see areas.

Gyeongju

Also known as the ‘Museum without walls’, Gyeongju city was the former capital of the Silla Kingdom which ruled Korea from the 7th to the 9th centuries. There is an incredible amount of history here with a number of tombs, pagodas, palace ruins and rock carvings than anywhere else in the country. Just beyond the city is the magnificent UNESCO World Heritage Bulguksa Temple which is considered the pinnacle of Silla architecture. Nearby Seokguram Grotto is the perfect spot to view the stunning sunrise. Gyeongju is also home to stunning natural scenery including Namsan Mountain which was regarded as a sacred place during the Silla period. There are hundreds of temples, pagodas and Buddha sculptures as well as scenic hiking trails to enjoy.

Jeju Island

Jeju Island is the largest island of Korea and is also one of the most relaxing holiday spots thanks to the the stuning beaches, relaxing treaments, local delicacies and the spectacular natural environment of this volcanic island. Volcanic lava tubes occupy almost 10% of the islands area and as such the island has been designated a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site. The island has no shortage of sights and unique experiences. ‘Must-sees’ include Seongsan Ilchulbong Tuff Cone, formed about 5,000 years ago from an eruption of magma on the ocean floor.

Many flock here to see the magnificent sunrise. Explore the lava tubes, more specifically Manjanggul Lava Tube which is more than 8kms long. Jeju is also renowned for the powerful sea-women (haenyo) who dive 10-20 metres without any breathing apparatus.

Busan

Busan is one of Asia’s most important seaports, yet is one of the more laidback cities of South Korea making it a popular choice for a relaxing getaway. Here you’ll find lots of character and traditional features as well as mountains, beaches, temples and delicious seafood. Get a bird’s eye view of the city atop Busan Tower, visit the Jagalchi Market, one of South Korea’s largest seafood markets or walk over the Oryukdo Skywalk, a glass bridge set on a seaside cliff.

Over on Haeundae Beach, best known for its sailing having one of the largest marinas in the country, enjoy the many shops, restaurants, cafés and hotels along the beach, also South Korea's longest.

Did you know? The village of Gamcheon has terrace houses painted in vibrant colours with murals and sculptures created by the residents.

The village is also known as the ‘Machu Picchu of Busan’.
