THE BEST TIME TO VISIT JAPAN From spring flowers and autumn leaves to atmospheric snow falls and summers full of festivals, Japan is a year-round destination. But when is the best time to visit? That's a secret we'd love to share! Spring in Japan conjures images of cherry blossoms, but this season has so much more to offer! Wait until the blossoms have fallen and you'll get a whole host of other blooms, milder temperatures and fewer fellow travellers to share the views with. The autumn colours stretch from September to late November and even beyond on the more southerly islands - travel later in the season for crisp, sunny days and plenty of seasonal snacks and treats. Cherry blossoms and autumn leaves might be bucket list experiences but exploring Japan outside of the most popular months may allow you to experience Japan at its very best.

Weather Between April and mid-June, there is an ideal weather window for exploring. Gone is the chill of winter but the humidity of summer is still a good way off. The forecast is usually dry and temperatures mild, with sunny days that help the vegetation grow green and vibrant.
Glorious Nature Once the cherry blossoms are out of the way, nature goes to work in earnest. As you journey through the country on your tour, you’ll find vibrant plum blossoms, fragrant wisteria, fields blanketed in pink and white moss phlox, vivid blue nemophila and many more. Travelling through the countryside or visiting temples and traditional Japanese gardens, your explorations will be backed by the verdant greens of fresh leaves on the trees – earning this time of year the nickname ‘green season’.
What to expect With dreamy, flower-filled views, comfortable weather for exploring and fewer travellers (with the exception of Golden Week in early May, when you’ll get lots of local tourists), the spring and early summer are a glimpse of a more authentic Japan. The temples and gardens of Tokyo can be admired in all their glory, Tokyo feels less bustling and its parks wonderfully lush, Mount Fuji can be viewed through a frame of vivid flowers and backed by hazy blue skies. In Hokkaido, you can enjoy a more gradual arrival of spring, as the winter snow melts away and is replaced by flowers and greenery, while Shikoku is blanketed in azaleas and wisteria, its orchards fragrant with blossom. In the cool of the spring evenings, an onsen is a necessary cultural experience, soaking away the adventures of the day in the warm waters.

AUTUMN Japan does autumn perfectly, with sunny days, comfort foods and fall colours galore. While autumn leaf viewing can make things busy, the fact that the season lasts a long time really helps visitors to avoid the crowds. September is when temperatures begin to drop after the heat and humidity of July and August, the trees slowly beginning to change from greens to the vibrant shades of the autumn. Beginning in Hokkaido in the north in mid-September to October, this sweep of colour reaches Tokyo and Kyoto in mid to late November (mid-December for more southerly islands) setting temples, parks and gardens blazing.

Weather Again, the weather is ideal for exploring – starting warm in September, as the year progresses days stay mild but become crisp and dry, then cool and refreshing as November passes. The combination of sunny days, clear blue skies and the fiery foliage give the country an almost golden glow, the variety of trees producing a painter’s palette of reds, oranges, browns and yellows.
Time to Feast Autumn in Japan is known as ‘shokuyoku no aki’, the season of appetite – we suggest you go hungry! With a cuisine that is so focussed on seasonality anyway, you can expect some delicious experiences. Join in the harvest celebrations with fresh seafood, fresh fruit, roasted nuts and comfort foods like oden, a one-pot stew. Vendors of slow roasted Japanese sweet potatoes appear on the streets in the evening, and all sorts of chestnut treats go on sale. Look out for matsutake mushrooms, nashi pears, persimmons, grapes and the smooth, mellow hiyaoroshi sake.
What to expect Honshu is ablaze with autumn colours in late November to early December – an ideal time thanks to less visitors and cooler, drier weather. Many of the most popular temples and gardens will look extra spectacular backed by vivid foliage and crisp blue skies, while Mount Fuji is often looking at its snow-capped best in the cooler, clear air. Head north to Hokkaido and you may find snow, further south and you may be able to bask in late summer-like temperatures. Onsen are always a good idea in autumn, perfect for keeping warm and relaxing on cooler nights and you might even catch the beginnings of the Christmas decorations and illuminations.
