Each year Penistone Camera Club takes part in an inter-club competition with Holmfirth and each year a special subject is chosen as one of the elements within the competition. This year the theme is Reflections.
Normally only five images would be selected to represent the club, but this year, because of the Covid 19 pandemic, and because we have not been able to meet together, we have been looking for alternative ways to encourage club members to share images, so we’ve decided to put together a book using the online platform ISSUU.
These images present different interpretations of the reflections observed by the photographers of the club. They may also encourage your own reflections.

Andrew Hobbs I am interested in how images of reflections in photography can present many different types and styles of images, from the beautiful view to abstract art; from mirror image to a visual puzzle; from a different way of observing a scene to a fleeting glimpse of a fragment of a place in time. In modern Western societies reflective surfaces proliferate in different forms. Modern architecture makes use of reflective surfaces in the cladding for buildings, in large windows and in street furniture. Architects using reflective materials have to consider not just the appearance of the building they are designing but the surroundings it will reflect. The camera phone can also become a mirror. Several modern artists use reflections in their work to challenge and ask us to reflect on how we see the world and who we are. Beverley Pepper’s sculpture in the Seattle Sculpture Park, ‘Perre’s Ventaglio III’, uses the changing natural light to heighten the optical effect of the herbaceous surroundings in which it is located. 6

Adrian James The Daimler radiator reminded me of one of the first cars my father owned, which caused me to reflect on the passage of time and to think back to the days when many cars had elaborate radiators, unique to their brand, unlike many of their modern counterparts.
The impact of some modern buildings lies not only in their shape, form and size, but in the sometimes rich and pleasing patterns they can create through the way in which they simultaneously reflect and distort their surroundings.
In the now seemingly global competition to reshape city skylines with ever larger and more complex designs, older skyscrapers have too often created deep, dark canyons in the cityscape. More modern skyscrapers have made extensive use of glass to create large reflective surfaces, which open up these areas.
