Lodge Bar and Lounge to Close for the 2021 Season for Further Renovations

by Andrew Savoy “E Clampus Vitus”.... do not worry if you don’t know what it means; nobody else does either. It sure was fun though. The local chapter of the Ancient and Honorable E Clampus Vitus, ECV for short, was on hand for the unveiling of a plaque marking the historical nature of the Brookdale Lodge. El Viceroy Marques De Branciforte 1797 ECV is the delightful name for the local chapter for a group that is considered a drinking historical society; or a historical drinking society depending on who you might ask.

Dedicating the plaque was the Noble Grand Humbug Anthony “Riddick” Moore Bailey. Also on hand to speak words of sincere and genuine thanks was the current owner of the Brookdale Lodge, Previn Patel. The weather was as nice as could be for the afternoon unveiling, and all the folks gathered were just as lovely as the weather. Governor Newsom Announces California has Joined COP26 Declaration on Zero-Emission Vehicles

the reopened Brookdale Lodge Bar. ECV followed the dedication with their yearly private party called the Widders Ball, the only event of the year strictly devoted to celebrating the female partners (Widders) of the Clampers. As the last of the revelers meandered out, the curtain fully came down on the Lodge’s 2021 season.

While the Bar will be closed until possibly February of 2022, the rest of the Lodge will remain open. The Hotel rooms, convenience store, and the fabulous Diner will continue operating, but please call ahead to verify. Don’t forget to check out the new plaque on the brick column out front! The Bar will undergo additional renovations aimed at making it even more enjoyable and efficient. Plans to open the area between the Bar and Brook Room as a game room are in place. Besides the two free pool tables and steel tip dart boards, rumor has it a table-top shuffleboard will also be brought in. Next season looks to be even better than this last year. Word has it that ECV Branciforte 1797 is opting to make it their permanent “homebase” bar once reopened.

More good news for the Brookdale Lodge is that the permits have finally come in for other major

renovations. The Mermaid Room and the Brook Room dining hall will begin to have work done on them. There is no word yet as to how long this will take as repairs are extensive, but it’s currently spoken about in terms of two years for the famous dining hall. It will be a long process, but no doubt it will be stunning when finished and restored to its former glory.

No doubt, the community is thrilled to have part of our majestic historical Lodge back in working order and active with various festivities. No doubt, we will all be anxiously awaiting the return of its glory, with the Clampers as Historic guardians alongside.

Published: Nov 10, 2021 - Governor Gavin Newsom today announced that California has signed on to a global agreement bringing together nations, states and regions, vehicle manufacturers, businesses, investors and other partners dedicated to rapidly accelerating the transition to zero emission vehicles. Launched by the UK COP presidency, the COP26 Declaration on Zero-Emission Cars and Vans aims to achieve 100% zero emission vehicle sales by 2035 in leading markets, and no later than 2040 globally.

The Governor provided pre-recorded remarks for COP26 Transport Day today lauding the agreement and lifting up California’s world-leading policies to usher in a clean transportation future.

California last month surpassed one million zero-emission vehicle sales, a top export for the state. In Glasgow, California Air Resources Board Chair Liane Randolph participated in the launch of the joint declaration today.

letter from the publisher Happy Holidays Friends, Blessing to all of you. This year may be better than last year when we were sheltering in place and not seeing our families. It is nice to think that many of our holiday traditions can be celebrated again with friends and family.

As we enjoy having our loved ones around us again, let us not forget our friends and families who lost their homes last year. It is a great time to remember them and use those generous hearts to support a non-profit. There are so many wonderful causes who would love a contribution this year. Let me remind you though, that a non profit status is difficult to maintain for a reason. It gives oversight for the money we send. Please give all that you can but also know who it is going to and make sure they are legit. That applies to organizations which will use the money to help

so many people, like those families who lost their homes.

Outside of the holiday donations, here is one tradition my family has done in the past that I would like to share with you. It is not an original idea mind you. Our dear friend Dennis Gobets came up with this one. Dennis used to write for the paper. He was my mentor in getting the paper operational. He passed away several years ago. I still miss him.

My youngest son and I went to Abbots and bought a newish backpack. We filled it with warm clothes, socks, a hat and a scarf.

Then we went to Rite Aid and bought travel size toiletries. We finished it off with sweet treats.

After my son was happy with the contents, we went downtown Santa Cruz and handed the bag to someone who looked like they could use it. We didn’t say anything except “happy holiday’s”. As we walked away we heard him say, “wow; Reeses, I haven’t had those in years.” My son still talks about that day and how it made him feel.

I would recommend this activity. It was truly magical.

Zero-Emissions - Cont. global partners to build a clean transportation future,” said Governor Newsom. “This is the most impactful step we can take to fight climate change and it will take partners working together across all sectors of society to accelerate the transition. As the fifth largest economy in the world, California will continue to use our market power to push zero-emission vehicle innovation and drive down costs for everyone as we clean the air and create a healthier future for our children and the planet.”

California is home to more than 485,000 clean energy jobs and the state’s renewable energy and clean vehicle industries lead the nation in growth. Since taking office, the Governor has taken bold action to eliminate harmful emissions from the transportation sector and drive the transition to zero-emission vehicles. Governor Newsom made a historic commitment to require that sales of all new passenger vehicles be zero-emission by 2035 and aggressively decarbonize heavy-duty vehicles such as trains, trucks and buses. The state has targeted emissions from the heavy-duty sector with bold action to reduce pollution in disproportionately impacted communities.

The California Comeback Plan includes a $3.9 billion package to accelerate our zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) goals, including funding for clean vehicle infrastructure and to help drive consumer adoption of ZEVs. Earlier this year, Gover-

nor Newsom joined a bipartisan group of 12 governors from across the country calling for the Biden Administration to create a path with the states to ensure that all new vehicles sold in the U.S. will be zero-emission in the near future and amplify states’ investments in ZEV charging and fueling infrastructure.

California today also assumed leadership of the Transportation Decarbonisation Alliance, a unique collaboration bringing together countries, cities or regions and companies as the major drivers in sustainable, low-carbon mobility, and unveiled a Call to Action on Zero-Emission Infrastructure developed in partnership with the Netherlands to support public-private collaboration on the deployment of charging infrastructure.

Led by Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, California’s delegation at COP26 last week highlighted the state’s groundbreaking policies to combat the intensifying climate crisis and joined with international partners, top U.S. climate officials and representatives from other states and regions to discuss efforts to enhance collaboration on a wide array of climate action.

Lieutenant Governor Kounalakis participated in events with White House National Climate Advisor Gina McCarthy and Special Presidential Envoy for Climate John Kerry, among others, and signed on to Scotland’s Edinburgh Declaration, making California the first U.S. state to join this global network of governments pledging action to protect biodiversity.

Ben Lomond Yule Tree Blaze

by Lisa Robinson In the 1930s, the San Lorenzo Valley took Christmas very seriously.

In fact, so seriously that it had a lighted trees contest along San Lorenzo Valley Drive, now referred to as Highway 9, promoted and sponsored by the Big Tree Lighting Association.

In 1938, there were ninety-four entrants; Ben Lomond must have looked grand with multiple large illuminated trees: “Ben Lomond Yule Tree Blaze” reported the Sentinel.

The Ben Lomond Community Club decided that year that they would plant a permanent tree to be decorated annually. The tree was to be planted at the intersection of the highway and the north end of mill street on a triangular plot donated by George Guthrie.

The intent was to make Guthrie’s Corner a park, and so the club appointed a Monument and Christmas Tree committee. They held a card party, playing bridge, whist, and pinochle, to raise funds.

The twenty-five foot redwood tree was planted in mid-November and illuminated on November 30. The final touch, a star, was added the following day. They were not quite sure how they were going to place the star, but resident John Larson, an old-time sea-faring man solved the problem using a long ladder and “deftly thrown ropes.”

This would likely take around 18 months and would include considerable public input.

The Ben Lomond school children erected a tree on the Stirling Point at the corner of Love Creek and the highway. The boys were given the task of getting the tree, and the ornaments were made by the girls.

The Ben Lomond Fire Department also had a “so beautifully lighted” tree, which was first illuminated on Thanksgiving.

But the largest, most spectacular and elaborately decorated tree, was the ninety-eight foot redwood tree of Big Tree Lighting Association located in the Brook Lomond tract. The high intensity mercury vapor and sodium vapor lamps to “bring out the natural green of the tree at night,” were shipped from the East and installed by Coast Counties Gas and Electric, with the transformer and cable being laid concealed underground. It was illuminated on weekends and holidays since the fireman’s dance at Halloween and would stay illuminated from dusk to midnight from December 1st through January.

Winners of the lighting contest were awarded their ribbons at the Del Mar Theater in Santa Cruz at the end of December. The Ben Lomond School won first prize in the schools category and the Ben Lomond Community Club won first prize in the Senior Organizations category.

The individual category was won

by Al Malone of Boulder Creek.

He was awarded the “honor of outstanding achievement”. His display, although simple, gave a warm effect. It consisted of moss laid on the limbs of a fir tree, flooded with the light of a blue-cellophane covered floodlight.”

On the Water Front (November, 2021)

The November 4th SLVWD Board Meeting attracted more than 40 members of the public as District Manager Rick Rogers reported that the owners of the Big Basin Water Company (BBWC) had recently requested in writing that the San Lorenzo Valley Water District (SLVWD) explore possible consolidation with BBWC. BBWC is a private, family-owned water company that services roughly 500 homes north of Boulder Creek. Its infrastructure was seriously damaged by the CZU Fire in August 2020, and BBWC has attracted increasingly negative attention in recent months from both dissatisfied customers and concerned state officials.

SLVWD Directors unanimously expressed a desire to help neighbors in need, but they also stressed their responsibility to protect SLVWD and its ratepayers from paying for the cost of a potential consolidation. SLVWD has already been providing emergency assistance on a limited basis to BBWC and its water customers (e.g., SLVWD supplied a repair crew on October 21st after a mainline break caused a system outage), but the BBWC letter was the essential first step for moving beyond this. An official consolidation would require that the District complete the formal local review process specified by California’s Local Agency

The public sentiment (both from BBWC customers and current SLVWD customers) at the November 4th Board meeting was strongly in favor of exploring a potential consolidation. People had questions about the ultimate cost for BBWC customers, but Rick Rogers said this would depend on the outcome of engineering studies and the pursuit of funding opportunities. He said that state funding is likely to be made available, but he also stressed that the active support and involvement of current BBWC customers would be a key factor in a successful consolidation. County Supervisor Bruce McPherson voiced his support as well, and the Board voted unanimously to move forward with further discussion between BBWC and SLVWD. The Board also received and approved an extensive and long-awaited report from Akel Engineering analyzing and identifying key issues with the District’s current infrastructure. The full document is known as the SLVWD Water System Master Plan and is available at: https://www.slvwd.com/sites/g/ files/vyhlif1176/f/uploads/2021_ slvwd_master_plan_final_report. pdf The report concluded that the current system is seriously undersized in many areas with regard to fire-flow requirements, and it used a detailed hydrologic model to assess performance across various scenarios. It prioritized upcoming infrastructure improvements and estimated spending requirements for capital improvement at between $3.3 and $4.2 million per year from 2021 to 2026 and between $2.1 and $2.8 million per year from 2027 to 2041. Potential strategies for funding these improvements will be discussed at future Board meetings. Meanwhile, the Board is holding a special meeting at 6:30 PM on November 10th to formally present the Water System Master Plan to interested members of the public (via Zoom).

The next regular Board of Directors meeting is scheduled for 6:30 PM on December 2nd (still via Zoom).

Is It a Good Idea to List Your Home During the Holidays?

by MJ Stearns The holiday season is typically not peak listing time for real estate. But with the current situation, low inventory with great demand, it might not be such a bad idea. There are a few buyers then, say, in May or June, meaning that homes tend to take longer to sell during the holidays, so sellers often wait to list until spring.

This might not be the same for 2021.

Selling your home during the holidays can be tricky. Some people need to sell over the holidays, and some buyers have no alternative but to buy a home during the winter months if they’ve been given notice at a rental.

Are you ready to sell your home this holiday season?

Pros for selling during the holidays: With there being a low supply of homes, and not a lot of competition, you may benefit from the lack of inventory. Reduced inventory over the holidays generally means less competition from other sellers. Homeowners who want to sell during the holiday season won’t have too much competition. That puts them in the driver’s seat.

There is more time for showings with lots of people taking time off over the holidays: you may find it easier to squeeze in showings during off hours than you would during spring/summer months when everyone is working or taking vacations.

Homebuyers are more serious.

If buyers are buying in the winter, it’s probably because of a change in their circumstances, such as a job change or moving to be near a fami-

ly member. They’re most likely motivated to get the deal done quickly.

It is still very much a sellers’ market right now.

Cons for selling during the holidays include the following: It’s harder to keep your home looking good. The holidays are an inconvenient time to be ready for a home showing at a moment’s notice. Not everybody keeps the house spickand-span when cooking, wrapping gifts, and throwing parties, and the outdoor curb appeal is much harder to achieve in the winter.

Low offers could come from firsttime homebuyers who don’t know any better, thinking you are desperate for selling at this time. Buyers might try to negotiate or give you a lowball offer. Picking the right agent helps with this process. They do all of the negotiating for you.

Tips for selling this season: Scale back the holiday decorations.

If you decide to keep your home on the market through the holiday season, try to scale back on your decorations. Too many decorations can be overwhelming and distracting to potential buyers.

Minimizing decorations will make your home feel more spacious.

When a buyer enters your home, you want them to imagine putting their furniture in each room and making the place their own, and they can’t do that if the holiday decorations are dominating the area.

The End of Daylight Savings Time Brings

Danger to Wildlife

Native Animal Rescue, along with several other rescue organizations, notices right after the Fall time change, an increase in Wildlife injuries due to rush-hour traffic now happening at dusk, when a lot of our forest creatures are starting to become active. When the great horned owl in the barn now hunts for prey, it’s usually just before sundown. Our deer populations also come out to forage at this time; bucks are also chasing mates during this time of year. When most of us are on our way home from work, the majority of the animal populations are still adapting to shorter days and it becoming dark earlier.

Our wildlife, including deer, are carrying on as normal, not knowing of the concept of time. Come Autumn,those same deer have become long accustomed to darting across the road, day after day for weeks on end, right around the hour of 6 p.m. When the human clock suddenly turns back to Pacific Standard Time (PST), those same sunset-darting deer find themselves crossing the road at the very height of rush hour. That’s when bad things happen to good deer — and good people in cars and trucks as well.

So I thought this month’s column would be a good reminder to plant the seed of caution for the influx of wildlife we at Animal Rescue received this time of year; injured owls, deer, racoons and skunks, that have had altercations with vehicles. And of course the best reminder is the deer and other wildlife we see that didn’t make it on the sides of the road more frequently this time of year.

As the sunlight fades, the end of daylight saving time pushes rush hour into dusk, the time when many animals are most active. It’s also harder for drivers heading home from work to see anything trying to cross the road. It is good to keep in mind, all wildlife are struggling to find food, having to search farther and further out to keep their bellies full. So during fall please keep in mind that we’re not the only ones on the road trying to get home or get our dinner.

Keeping Our Moods Up This Winter

by Marcey Klein BS, CNC Darker overcast days, and more temperate weather summarize the next several winter months ahead, but it is nothing to get down about, as there are ways to keep our spirits high and our bodies happy.

Probably the most important thing we can do is exercise several times a week. The endorphins produced by our bodies during exercise are very mood lifting, and the detoxifying effects while we sweat are great for our livers. The right kind of exercise can be a powerful tool in age reversal. Make sure the exercise is not breaking down more than it’s building, and that

it’s appropriate for your age and lifestyle; yoga, tai chi, weight lifting, some aerobic movement like dance, and rebounding, will enhance our lives. Mixing it up is important, joining a class will give you motivation, and finding workout partners can really help us become more accountable. Now is the time to do it. The key for success is to get the heart pumping and your body moving.

Another beneficial modality to lift up our moods is to drink Tulsi Tea, also known as Holy Basil.

This plant is amazing for your health, your mood, and can really destress the body as it assists in deactivating and removing the destructive fight or flight hormone cortisol from our bodies. If someone is really having a difficult time coping this winter, try taking the concentrated version sold in

Vitamin D plays a big role in improving our moods. I have heard it been called the mood hormone a few times, as vitamin D actually acts like a hormone more than a vitamin. This sunshine vitamin does not get manufactured in our bodies nearly as much in the winter months, as we are not getting the sun that we did in the summer.

Research has shown that we have twice the amount of serotonin in the brain during the summer months than in the winter, and that people who are lowest in vitamin D are many times more likely to suffer from depression.

We have vitamin D receptors in the brain, and this vitamin may affect the proteins in the brain that play a role in mood, learning, and memory, not to mention vitamin D and the part it plays in immune benefit. 5,000 IU a day taken regularly can be sufficient.

Make sure to eat the right type of fats for your brain. Our brain is made of roughly 60% fat, and mostly long chain polyunsaturated fats like omega 3’s. The omega 3 fats from wild salmon, sardines, mackerel, oysters, herring, flax, chia, hemp, and walnuts our brains love. Our brain is also

made up of some saturated fats as well, that’s why coconut oil and fats from pastured meats and butter are so good for us. Proteins are also important for our brains because the amino acids that make up these proteins are used by our bodies as raw material to make our mood enhancing neurotransmitters. Having a protein and fat source at every meal is important for not only balancing our blood sugars, but for giving us the raw materials necessary for building healthy neurotransmitters. We can also take L Theanine, one of the building blocks to making our feel good neurotransmitters.

Eating a variety of foods, keeping our plates colorful, and eating seasonal and fresh ingredients will give us phytonutrients, antioxidants, and nutrition to build a better and happier you this winter.

The Art of Giving Thanks ~ It Starts in the Heart

by Lori Suzanne Holetz As we watch another year slip into the past and we arrive at the time we celebrate Thanksgiving, we are reminded to be thankful. However, it is also a good time to begin to be thankful on a daily basis.

Developing an “attitude of gratitude” is a simple and extremely profound way to shift energy in our life from negative to positive, as we watch how life responds to us within this choice.

This daily practice is simple enough. It only requires that you stop for a brief moment, think upon your life, and find even the tiniest thing you are happy and grateful for. It can be as small as being thankful for your daily meal, or as big and full as the inventory of your entire life and all the blessings you can identify; friends, family, a roof over your head; yesterday, today, and tomorrow. It starts within your heart. Gratitude resides there and is aligned with a loving way of being.

When we begin to take a closer look at our life with a positive attitude, many good things can be seen…. it is truly a matter of perspective. We can sit back and review the past two years of pandemic, separation, job or home loss, family shifts of routine, and much more, and either take a viewpoint of how messed up it all has been, or we can look at the bright side. Bright side, we have

all been “sent home”, with an opportunity to slow down, drop the frenetic micro-details, and have the tremendous blessing of time to reflect on what is truly most important in our own particular situation.

We are being taught by profoundly challenging global circumstances to stop, assess, and find the goodness that does surround us daily.

One simple exercise to help get into the daily rhythm of ever-present thankfulness is to make a specific time, best in the morning before the day gets going, and write down one specific thing you are thankful for. It only takes as little as a few days of consistency to create that shift within your life.

Before you know it, you will be creating a new, supportive pattern that has the potential to shift your entire life, into an amazingly positive direction. County Public Health Awarded Grants for Traffic Safety Programs The County of Santa Cruz Health Services Agency is pleased to announce that the Public Health Division is the recipient of three grants totaling $448,000 from the California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) that will prioritize impaired driving prevention, as well as the safety of bicyclists, pedestrians, and child passengers. Each grant will be used for a variety of community-focused activities that include: Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety ($170,000) • Delivering bicycle and pedestrian safety classroom presentations in schools.

• Distributing bicycle helmets and lights to low-income community members.

• Conducting walking field trips and on-bike safety trainings.

Child Passenger Safety ($53,000) • Collaborating with local partners to conduct car seat checkup events.

• Offering Child Passenger Safety Technician (CPST) certification training.

• Distributing child safety seats to parents and caregivers, including car seat inspections and education.

Impaired Driving Education and Resources ($225,000) • Educating Alcohol Merchants about best practices for limiting youth access to alcohol.

• Providing Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Place of Last Drink surveys to law enforcement for educating bars and restaurants.

The Joyous Kitchen Pumpkin Buttermilk Waffles/Donuts and Ginger Spice Butter & Maple Whiskey Glaze

by Joy Stewart This article features the same batter in not one but two ways, with a sweet, spicy, boozy glaze recipe that’s simply magical. It all starts with fresh pumpkin puree and a special ginger and pumpkin pie spice butter that doesn’t seem to photograph well, but nevertheless is absolutely divine! The butter is actually a wonderfully all purpose fall dessert addition--try it in your next apple or pear crumble or in your next apple or pecan pie.

Initially, I wanted to use the puree I got from roasting my own pumpkins for baked donuts in my new mini donut pan. But the idea of pumpkin waffles just wouldn’t quit haunting me, so I decided to try adding pumpkin to a buttermilk batter, to make the donuts extra fluffy and so that the batter can double as a pumpkin waffle batter.

I knew the short cooking time for waffles and mini baked donuts would hardly allow any spices added to the batter to toast properly and reach their fully toasted potential, so I decided instead to make a ginger and pumpkin pie spice butter to top the waffles.

Alternatively you could toast the spices in the butter you’re using for the batter before cooling it off and adding it in.

When I served the waffles, I slathered on a generous amount of ginger spice butter and lots of real maple syrup. I served the donuts

glazed generously with the maple whiskey glaze I made by using the maple syrup, some whiskey, confectioners sugar and the ginger spice butter.

Pumpkin Buttermilk Waffle & Donut Batter 1 cup all purpose flour, sifted 1 cup whole wheat flour sifted (or you can use all purpose flour) 2 Tablespoons baking powder 1 Teaspoon baking soda 1/2 Teaspoon salt 1 cup packed pumpkin puree 3/4 cup well shaken buttermilk 1 cup whole milk 4 1/2 Tablespoons butter, melted and cooled 2 extra large eggs 1/4 cup brown sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Method Sift all dry ingredients together in a medium sized mixing bowl.

Whisk together eggs, milk, buttermilk, vanilla and pumpkin.

Add dry ingredients to wet ingredients and stir just enough to combine.

Add sugar, then butter and stir only enough to combine.

Bake in a mini donut pan or use a waffle iron immediately.

If you’re making waffles, spread with spice butter (see recipe below) and serve with warmed maple syrup. If you’re making donuts drizzle with glaze (recipe also below).

Ginger & Pie Spice Butter 1/2 Teaspoon ground cinnamon 1/2” piece of ginger, peeled & grated 4 Tablespoons butter 6 spice cloves (round parts only), crushed 1/4 Teaspoon Nutmeg 1/4 Teaspoon allspice Method In a small saucepan over very low heat, melt butter.

Add spices and ginger and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 5 minutes.

When you can smell the spices in the kitchen they’ve been incorporated. Remove the butter from the heat and allow it to cool.

Serve on your waffles and/or use part of it to make donut glaze.

Ginger Pie Spice Maple Whiskey Donut Glaze 1 Tablespoon ginger spice butter, melted but cooled 1 Tablespoon confectioners’ sugar 1 Tablespoon grade B maple syrup 2 Tablespoons good whiskey Method In a bowl combine whiskey, spice butter and syrup.

Whisk confectioners sugar in until the glaze is smooth.

Ladle generously over donuts.

BOARD TO CONSIDER REDISTRICTING PLANS After numerous public meetings and extensive public input, the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors will consider several final maps and plans to redraw County supervisorial districts at its Nov. 16, 2021, meeting.

Posted as “Preliminary Final Maps for Redistricting” on the County’s Redistricting 2021 site under “Mapping & Data,” the proposals seek to adjust county supervisorial boundaries to account for population changes within the districts and preserve communities of interest. Every ten years, local, State and federal governments undergo a redistricting process based on decennial U.S. Census data. The Board will take public testimony on several proposed changes, including those offered by individual community members. The redistricting process has been overseen by the Advisory Redistricting Commission, but final map approval is the responsibility of the Board of Supervisors.

The proposed changes to the current supervisorial districts may impact the Apple Hill neighborhood in Watsonville, the East Harbor neighborhoods in Santa Cruz, the city of Scotts Valley (currently split

among two districts along Highway 17), or the Midtown area of Santa Cruz between Harbor High school and Branciforte Middle School including an adjacent pocket down Water Street.
