by Wendy Sigmund The Santa Cruz Mountain’s Second Annual Harvest Festival was a great success with plenty of vendors selling everything from toffee to beautiful custom made jewelry, soaps, and clothing. Then there was the entertainment. Take One, The Bootleggers, The Troubadours, and Freesia Raine, just to name a few of the bands which delighted the crowd.

The Harvest Festival was held on Saturday September 29 in the empty lot between Taqueria Los Amigos and the building housing Jenna Sues and the Boulder Creek Bulletin. The neighbors in the Junction Park area are expressing their frustration of the lawlessness October Recreation

“I have seen people smoking pot, drinking, and people sleeping in their car,” neighbor Jennifer Perry said at the Wednesday night meeting. She went on to explain that her children want to go play by the river, but she cannot let them due to the people who hang out there every day. “I even saw a man stumbling around the park so drunk he could not even take care of his child [which was with him])”.

The board member encouraged her to call the sheriff. To this she replied, “I can only call so much”. This approach is not working. The board then encouraged all neighbors to call and call often. The more phone calls the sheriff ’s office receives the more likely they will be to send a car down to the park.

Board member Galt agrees that this is a problem which is recurring and has agreed to personally join the effort in walking the park and making a presence.

All concerned citizens are encouraged to call the sheriff ’s department if they are uncomfortable at one of Boulder Creek parks or witness law breakers. SLV HiStory The Black Knight of Zayante vs. Joaquin Murrieta

by Matt Hill Harry Love was born in either Vermont or Texas, perhaps in 1818. No records exist as to his origin, and it remains a matter of conjecture. As a boy, it is said that he knew both Davy Crockett and Sam Houston, and since Love’s brother died at the Alamo, this seems likely. Harry himself fought with Abraham Lincoln in the Black Hawk War of 1831.

According to Governor Jerry Brown in a statement issued in July 2011 after he signed the bill into law he said, “I am signing this bill because establishing a fire protection and prevention fund in SRA (State Responsible Areas) will reduce the General Fund costs and ensure property owners in developed wildland areas pay for a portion of the fire and emergency response services they receive”.

Then there is the issue of how the bill came to be.

This is a fee and not a tax. A new tax requires a two-thirds majority vote in the California State Assembly whereas a fee requires only a simple majority. The fee passed with all democrats voting for it and all republicans voting against.

When the war with Mexico broke out in 1845, Love became a captain in the Scouts under General Zachary Taylor. For the next two years, as a scout and express rider, he rode alone for hundreds of miles to reconnoiter distant outposts. He tried his hand at gold mining during the California gold rush, but had no success. So he became a deputy sheriff at Santa Barbara, and with statehood status occurring, he became a State Ranger.

The fee is troubling at best for many struggling SLV homeowners. It is important to note that refusal to pay this fee can result in enormous late fees and could result in a lien being placed on your property by the State of California. You can, however, write ‘paid under protest’ in the memo section of your check.

The Boulder Creek Fire Protection District has adopted a resolution (12-04) formally objecting to the new fee.

They state that the fee will provide no additional services to the people of this valley. In addition, included in a press release issued by the BCFD Board in September of 2012, they state that California’s Master Mutual Aid System has been a model for the rest of the nation for decades and this fee will jeopardize the collaborative efforts between local agencies. They are concerned also that any future measures supporting local fire protection, prevention and paramedic services will simply not be approved by voters on top of the SRA fee.

“If the State Legislature wishes to reduce the burden on the State’s General Fund for CAL FIRE costs, an alternative and more equitable mechanism is necessary,” said District Board President, Rick Rogers.

Love’s claim to fame arrived when a bounty was raised by the newly minted State Legislature. As a ranger, Love was charged with searching out the notorious Mexican bandit Joaquin Murrieta and his associates. Captain Harry S. Love and his handpicked rangers set out in search of Murrieta and his sidekick Three-fingered Jack Garcia. After many wrong turns and hundreds of miles of fruitless searching, Love and his men were finally tipped off to a band of suspicious men camping in the remote Cantum Canyon, fifteen miles northeast of Coalinga.

When they arrived in Benicia, they were met by a relieved governor who presented Captain Love and his men with the $5,000 dollar reward. LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, We suppose it is no surprise that Bruce McPherson has been appearing at local events and knocking on doors, showing how he now cares about the San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley because he is running for office.

This recent interest is in stark contrast to Eric Hammer’s concern. We support Eric for 5th District Supervisor because he has a true commitment to community that we respect. It has been life-long and hands-on. He has worked for local nonprofits, for our business community, for our parks and schools, for folks in need-motivating people to come together to solve problems and improve our lives. He is smart and well organized-a real leader.

Dear Editor, There have been a string of robberies in the area of Bear Creek and View Drive; two on Lanktree, two on or Neely (sp), and one on Amity. The culprits have been spotted casing the area during the day in a dark blue sedan driven by two Hispanic men. One sits in the car ready to drive while the pother scouts around houses and rips them off. The car has been seen on West Park, on Manzanita, View Drive, Bear Creek Road, and other nearby areas. Obviously, ninety percent of the population of this country is not going out of its way to avoid processed food products that contain GMO’s. Again, that is not what this is about. It is about our right to know what is in our food.

It is about the right to choose what we feed our children, ourselves, are aging parents, our pets, our livestock. Despite overwhelming scientific evidence that genetically modified corn, soy, sugar beets, alfalfa and a smattering of other little marvels of Monsanto technology are very, very bad for anything with a beating heart, an exoskeleton, leaves and roots, and the soil they grow in, these corporations (let’s name them, shall we? Monsanto, Cargill, DuPont, Dow, BASF and Bayer are the big ones), have managed to silence scientists all over the world who threaten to expose their products for the damage they do to us. They are contributing tens of millions of dollars (perhaps hundreds of millions before this election is over) to defeat Prop. 37.

We always, always become what we eat. Let us never forget that. Bt corn and soy have been modified at the very level of their DNA (as is true with all genetically modified organisms) to, in this case, blow out the guts of insects. These crops have been altered from food products for humans and livestock, as well as incidental species like two-spotted ladybugs and Monarch butterflies, to a pesticide. This corn and this soy are pesticides. What does that mean for anything and everything outside of the bugs they were designed to target? Well, there’s this: a dramatic increase in leaky gut syndrome since the year following the introduction of Bt corn into our food supply. So, a product engineered to blow out the guts of insects is slowly, very slowly blowing out ours as well. Scientists have found that the gene responsible for creating the toxin found in Bacillus thuringiensis (or, Bt) is not destroyed in the human digestive tract as Monsanto has consistently

Who is in charge around here? Boulder Creek is an unincorporated town. According to wiki.answers, an unincorporated town will have no selfruling government established and is often just a named location, usually governed by the larger political division within the county in which it is located (in our case, Santa Cruz). We do not have a mayor or city council, no city hall, no courthouse.

So who runs Boulder Creek? Well, the short answer is County Supervisor for District 5 (so it is easy to see why this upcoming supervisors race should be important to us). Right now our county supervisor is Mark Stone. He is in charge of the entire area called District 5 which includes parts of the City of Santa Cruz, Pasatiempo, Scotts Valley and the entire San Lorenzo Valley. With such a large area, he cannot possibly give his full attention to everything that is important to us here in Boulder Creek. So then, the question still remains, who makes the decisions that shape our town?

We have only one elected governmental entity in town: the Boulder Creek Parks and Recreation Department, which has a publically elected board.

People of Boulder Creek and Brookdale will have the opportunity to vote for three new board members, or keep some that we currently have.

The only one not running for re-election is Eric Hammer because his sights are set on the District 5 County Supervisor position. The incumbents are Tess Fitzgerald and Brian Valdivia. Newcomers include Richard Chatoff, Kimberly Main and Michael Watson. The BCB would like to extend an invitation to all five of these candidates to introduce themselves to the community in a letter outlining who they are and why they think they are the right person for the job. We also welcome letters from members of the public who would like to comment on one or more of the candidates.

Then there is the Boulder Creek Business Association, which is a group of business owners that promotes business in the town of Boulder Creek.

As an organized group they have the opportunity to guide the direction of our town as well. According to their mission statement, “The purpose of the BCBA is to maintain a healthy economic

So what does the BCBA really do and how do they do it? They organize town events and pay for them through fundraising efforts at those events. These events include the Fourth of July Parade and BBQ, the Tree Lighting and welcoming Santa for Christmas, and coming up later this month, the Boulder Creek Halloween Sidewalk Party. The Red Hat Red Hot Golf Tournament and the Installation dinner are fund raisers to pay for these events along with the money received from membership.

These events are important to the residents of Boulder Creek. Many of us live in this community for the small town feel and community events like these contribute to that feeling.

They are not to be missed, creating cherished memories for the young people of the Valley.

So this is a very valuable function of the BCBA. That is not all the BCBA has taken on. There is the Light the Town CANpaign, which is trying to raise money for year-round lights for Boulder Creek’s downtown buildings. The idea is to create a warm and inviting evening atmosphere to welcome visitors and residents.

And speaking of lighting up Boulder Creek, there is another issue at hand: our new street lights. Recently a notification was received that the street lights in town were to be replaced. A forty-eight hour deadline was all that was given to approve the lights that CalWORKS planned to install. A special PG&E grant would cover the costs involved with the installation (to answer one reader’s question in a letter to the editor which appeared in the September 14 issue).

The BCBA immediately protested and managed to get County of Santa Cruz Senior Civil Engineer Jack Sohriakoff to come and discuss the types of streetlamps available in order to allow residents a say in which style would be finally chosen. Because of the extreme short notice given for this meeting, attendance was lower than hoped for. Members of the BCBA were present, as well as a few local residents and a representative of the SLV Museum. Between those present, an agreement was reached to have a more decorative style of streetlamp installed rather than the highway-style lighting that Cal WORKS had originally proposed.

BCBA board decided that the street intersections in town should have taller, more industrial streetlamps for safety reasons, with the more decorative lamps in between. (Note: CalTrans requires this lighting only at the junction of Hwy 9 and 236 because it is an intersection of two highways.) The BCBA made this decision without public input. Chris Cullier, vice president of the BCBA, stated that they were primarily concerned about safety and felt these larger lights would illuminate an entire intersection and thus they should be installed at each major intersection in town.

Who gives them this authority? Well, in a way, we do. Or at least our predecessors did. Our town is structured in such a way that grants decision-making rights to the BCBA and the Department of Parks and Recreation. What the rest of us might say at meetings and in the press has no teeth because these organizations are not bound to decide according to the wishes of the majority of Boulder Creek residents (not that they don’t, but that they are not bound to).

So that is the structure we have in Boulder Creek.

The people who make these decisions are elected, but not in a democratic way. In order to vote for a board member of the BCBA one must be a member of the organization. To be a member you must own a business and pay dues. You are rewarded for your service with promotion of your business on the BCBA website, a discount if you want to rent space on the sign coming into town, and you get an opportunity to help organize town events.

In Boulder Creek we do not have a mayor or a city council. Is it really that Boulder Creek is run by a Business Association? If you have a complaint, a suggestion, or want to see something changed you must submit it to the District Supervisor.

Perhaps that is part of Boulder Creek’s charm.

‘No government’ is the way Boulder Creek has always been, and maybe the people here like it that way. But someone make decisions around here. Make sure you know who those people are. That is the way of a healthy democracy.

When it comes to bait the most wellliked is peanut butter on a small piece of cotton, other successful baits include dried fruit, bacon, and pet food. Whatever bait you use, make sure it is well attached to the trigger of the trap. Some folks use string or thread to keep bait in place so it’s hard to remove. I know we all grew up thinking that cheese is the best bait, thanks to Tom and Jerry, but it’s not. When it comes to placement the best area is going to be a secluded area where the rat has been known to travel. Areas with droppings, signs of gnawing, or that yucky smudge mark, are good areas to set traps. Place them against the walls or on the beams so the rat is forced to cross over it. For Norway rats set the trap close to walls so that they extend from the walls at a right angle with the trigger nearly touching the wall, they should be set in pairs. For the pesky roof rat, the traps should be set off the ground, for example, screwed to the roof rafter, or wired along pipes. Because of the rats’ neophobia issues, sometimes it is best to attach the trap with bait, but not set it for a few days, this gives that rat a sense of security.

But then when you do set it…bamm! It will get that rat, at 2:00am of course!

Rodenticides (toxic baits) are an alternative when rats are present in large numbers or traps are not reducing an infestation. You might have noticed recently that the bait you always used is not on the shelf anymore. Sounds like light bulbs huh? As of May 2011 the EPA banned many of the familiar baits that we had sold in the past. This is an effort to reduce poisoning to wildlife and risk of exposure to children. So now bait must be sold in ready to use disposable bait stations that are child and wildlife resistant. Boulder Creek Hardware, now being a store with feed and agriculture supplies, is able to sell the professional rodenticides for agricultural use that may not be available at other stores. We even now stock an OMRI listed (Organic Materials Review Institute) bait, but which-

ever rodenticide you choose, it is very important to follow the instructions that come with it.

There are some other control methods. You can try asking Fluffy to go out and get them, but if the rat is a Norway it might be the same size as fluffy, and because of that Fluffy might just want to turn the other way and high tail it outta there! I know our Jack Russell, Sprocket would hunt them down, it is in his DNA, but honestly I don’t think I want Sprocket to have rat breath.

Years ago, out on the ranch, we had a bad infestation in the dirt and we were able to flood the rats out with a garden hose and then turn all the dirt over with temporary success. Oh they ran!

Speaking of running rats… that reminds me of the rats that were standing outside of Johnnie’s Super. One of the rats got an idea. He said “OK this is what we’re gonna do, we’ll run inside, past Adrienne the cashier and get as much cheese as we can and we’ll meet back here.” So they do it… and when they get back the first rat asks the second rat “what kind of cheese did you get?” and he says “American,” which pleases the other rats very much, as it’s one of their favorites. Then the second rat asks the first rat “what kind of cheese did you get?” and he replies “Cheddar,” which again pleases the rats. So then the first two rats ask the third rat “what kind of cheese did you get?” to which he replies “nacho cheese.” “Nacho cheese?” asked the other two rats. “There’s no such thing as nacho cheese.” And the third rat says “Well, as I was running out of the store I heard Emily the manager shouting, Hey! That’s not-cho cheese!”

If you are cleaning out a building that has been closed up, such as a cabin, shed, or garage, or areas where rodent nesting material have been found, follow these steps.

1.

Air out the building for at least 30 minutes by opening windows and doors. Leave the building while it is airing out.

2.

Wear latex or rubber gloves and a dust mask while cleaning.

3.

Avoid raising dust that may spread the virus through the air: Do not vacuum, sweep or dust. Carefully wet down areas with disinfectant before cleaning.

4.

Use rags, sponges and mops that have been soaked in the disinfectant solution to wipe down counter tops, cabinets and drawers, mop floors and baseboards.

5.

Mix a solution of 1 cup bleach to 10 cups water or use a household disinfectant.

6.

Steam clean carpets, rugs, and upholstered furniture.

7.

Thoroughly spray or soak any dead mice, droppings, or nesting areas with disinfectant or bleach solution.

8.

Wash clothes and bedding in hot water and detergent. Set the dryer on high.

9.

To dispose of contaminated items, including dead mice, put them in a plastic bag. Seal the bag and put it in another plastic bag. Seal the outer bag and put it in your outdoor garbage can.

When you are done, disinfect or throw away the gloves you used. Wash your hands or shower with soap and hot water.

Over the past several months I have been observing a house along the drive through my neighborhood.

The house was repossessed from its owners by a bank. An eviction notice was tacked to the front door and the family who lived there slowly began to pack up their belongings to move from their home.

As I passed the house with its vacant windows I noticed the only thing planted in the front yard was a For Sale sign that hung over the white picket fence that runs along the road in front of the residence.

There was mostly bare soil on either side of the front walk that leads up to the front door. The people who moved from the home didn’t do much gardening so the yard was really a blank canvas. The house sat waiting for its new owners only a short while, and then one day as I drove by the ‘For Sale’ sign read ‘Sold.’ It was exciting to think that the house would not fall into disrepair under the ‘Bank’ ownership.

Once the new family moved in, the house came to life with activity. Cars were parked in the driveway, boxes were being carried in and unpacked, curtains were being hung, and the lights were on when I would drive by at night. Very soon, in the sunniest corner of the yard, the owners made a small raised bed with river rocks as a border to hold soil in place for a garden yet to be seen. On my next drive through I noticed that in the river rock raised bed there was a teepee made of sticks and strings and small pole bean plants were planted to climb up the teepee, as well as a couple of tomato plants.

Then not long after that came squash plants planted to one side of the walk along the picket fence.

On a warm summer Saturday afternoon as I drove from my home down to get the mail at the bottom of the road I passed by the house where the new owner was out tending her vegetable garden. I rolled down my window and remarked to the woman over the picket fence that her garden looked great. She smiled and said “thank you.” She was very proud

of her work. The beans were climbing the teepee poles and the squash had grown huge leaves and were b eg inning to cover a lot of ground. A few days later as my wife and I were coming home we stopped at our mail box to pick up our mail and noticed that one of the neighborhood residents walking on the road stopped to admire the new vegetable garden and had struck up a conversation with new homeowners. The garden behind the picket fence, like food, had become a catalyst for neighbors to engage, to share advice and ideas, and for friendships to possibly sprout and grow. Now there are huge sunflowers nodding over the fence and a circular fire pit area to gather around on cool evenings. I enjoy the idea that front yards have become more of a gathering place where once people mostly used their back yards for entertainment and recreation.

On the corner of Hwy. 236 and Jamison Creek Road there is a garden display where a family has placed an old hay wagon that they use as a stage for their seasonal array of flowering plants, lights and props to celebrate spring, summer, winter and fall. This summer they arranged beach chairs and a surf board along with summer flowering perennials and below the wagon along the road there is a stone wall where pumpkin plants are sprawling and they will soon be center stage for the fall display. I have commented to the artists how much I enjoy their hard work and appreciate their dedication.

In my own garden my wife and I celebrated summer by having a garden-to-table dinner where we invited friends and family to share a dish made from their own home grown vegetables, fruit, and or from the local farmer’s market. We set a long table in the gar-

den where we dined and toasted to sharing life with one another. Gardens are about life and the journey.

My vegetable garden is looking like it worked hard this summer; I am harvesting lots of tomatoes and lemon cucumbers, still a few zucchini, and my son planted ‘Piel de sapo’ melons. The melons are small but sweet. Next year we will give them more room. Now is the time for canning, freezing or drying vegetables and fruit.

Now is the time to take tired plants out and begin a winter garden. Here are some cool season crops to choose from, lettuces, kale, chard, beets, peas, brussels sprouts, broccoli and cabbages, collard, parsnip, kohlrabi, radish, rutabaga, sorrel, spinach, turnip, artichoke, carrot, cauliflower, celery, endive, fennel, mustard, parsley, peas, and potatoes, chive, garlic, leek, onion, salsify, and shallot.

Fall is a great time for planting. Perhaps you have a place for a new tree or shrubbery, or an addition to your perennial border. Annuals for springtime blooming will be in the nurseries this fall, and there are many to choose from.Since they need some early warmth for roots to become established planting time is late September through early October. The best of spring’s annuals are sweet alyssum, bachelor’s buttons, calendula, Canterbury bells, Chrysanthemum multicaule, Chrysanthemum paludosum, dianthus, holly hock, Iceland poppy, larkspur, linaria, nemesia, nierembergia, pansy and viola, phlox, snapdragon stock, sweet pea, and sweet William. Fall is also time for planting bulbs such as narcissus or daffodils, tulips, babiana, Brodiaea laxa, crocus, freesia, dutch iris, gladiolus, homeria, ipheon, ixia, lachenalia, moraea, muscari, Nerine bowdenii, Ornithogalum thrysoides, sparaxis, Sterbergia lutea, Steptanthera cuprea, Tritonia crocata, and watsonia. Fall planting is like taking a blank canvas and painting it with color that will appear much later than your brush stroke.

Money Has anyone started talking to you about money yet? No matter how young or old you are or how rich or poor you are, it’s never too late to start educating yourself about money and what to do with it. The more you know about saving and investing your hard earned cash, the more money you will have. Now, just like everyone says, money doesn’t make you happy.

But the smarter you are with your money, the more opportunities you will have in life.

Do you know how saving and checking accounts work? Do you know how ATM and credit cards work and what the difference is? Do you know how to invest money for the best ROI? (Return on Investment – otherwise known as interest) There is a lot to learn. The internet is a good place to start, but it can be overwhelming. Cabrillo has some great extension mini-classes both in person and online. (Might be a little early for that if you’re under 18.) The American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) has a great website for beginners called www.feedthepig.org. They even have ways for younger kids to save. About. com also has some great trustable information.

Talk to your parents. Ask them what they know.

What are their values about money? What do they think? Parents, talk to your kids! (Remember to be smart about using the internet. You shouldn’t have to type in anything about yourself or pay any money to get valid information.)

If you haven’t already, start a savings account at a local bank here in the Valley. We have lots of them, full of very nice people that will help you. If you are under 18, you’ll need a parent to sign for you. If you just deposit $50 a month, you could save up to $600 in a year plus interest. Then you can start putting that money into accounts that give much better interest. After a while, the way your money compounds over time, you will be amazed how much you have.

OK, so let’s say you are super low income or under the poverty line. There are still lots of things you can do. It will just be a little harder, but in some ways a little easier. Get in the habit of saving $1 a week. Educate yourself on what programs are available to you. Find out how to get financial aid for college or a trade program after high school. Make an appointment with one of our local family resource centers to figure out what your options are.

No matter where you are starting from, remember this: No one is more responsible for taking care of you than you. The more you know, the more financially independent you will be.

I encourage you to overcome whatever fears or embarrassment you may have and start asking questions. This is a whole subject in school that is so crucial to your life that seems to get skipped over. Don’t let it happen to you.

Since the introduction of genetically modified crops into our food supply, there has also been an increase in diabetes, autism, Alzheimer’s disease, the list goes on. You can look them up for yourself. It is terrifying and heartbreaking. And it does not affect a small slice of the world’s population. Virtually anyone who consumes processed foods is introducing, in the most intimate way possible, these organisms into their own bodies.

What will become of us? What will we become?

It would be easy to add paragraphs to this essay describing in detail other similar horrors, because there are many. What would be the point of that? Remember, this is not an article about public health and safety. This is about our freedom. If we exercise our free choice to purchase processed foods in a conventional grocery store, the way the majority of citizens of this country still do, then it is also our right to know what they consist of. Naturally, the best possible outcome would be that, as a nation, we refuse to buy these products altogether and feed our families simply prepared organic food. This is not going to happen, at least not without a revolution.

Proposition 37 is a revolution. Do you see that? I see it. It will have a cascading affect, as it already has in the fifty other countries in which labeling laws have been passed. People will be able to finally see what is in their food.

They will change their purchasing habits because of that. Manufacturers will drop GMO’s like the hot potato that they are. We will all be safer and healthier, and Monsanto (the developers of products like DDT and Agent Orange) will have to find a new way to screw things up.
