This man, little-known in the UK and even in his home town of Harpenden, is renowned in China with statues in multiple cities and celebrated as a hero for rescuing a school of 60 boys by marching them 700 miles out of danger away from the invading Japanese army. He died 80 years ago aged just 30, an event commemorated in China, and now in Harpenden too.
