NOW for a Good Read In October, nature puts on a magnificent show for us as the trees shed their leaves and the nights draw in. Why not snuggle up with a good book and read about those silent giants standing guard in the garden.

Eucalyptus - Murray Bail This is a modern fairy tale about a widower called Holland and his beautiful daughter, Ellen. She, along with his vast collection of eucalyptus trees are his two most prized possessions and when Ellen turns nineteen, Holland reveals that he will let her to marry the man who can identify all the varieties of gum trees on his property. Of course, Ellen’s not too pleased, and doesn’t think much of the suitors who show up. That is, until a mysterious stranger appears and her curiosity suddenly gets the better of her. The Lie Tree - Frances Hardinge Faith’s father is found dead under mysterious circumstances, leaving Faith determined to get to the bottom of what happened. She finds a set of drawings that lead her to a strange tree that seems to flourish and grow when lies are whispered to it. The Lie Tree’s fruits bear hidden secrets and Faith will have to try and separate the truth from the poisonous fiction. Snow Falling on Cedars - David Guterson Set in the remote American Pacific Northwest, this is the story of a community rocked by the murder of a local fisherman. San Piedro Island is not the sort of place you’d want to make enemies, and when JapaneseAmerican, Kabuo Miyamoto is accused, it becomes clear that among the beautiful cedars lies a painful history. A wonderfully atmospheric book that’s full of suspense and tragedy. Eats, Shoots and Leaves: The Zero Tolerance Approach to Punctuation - Lynne Truss A must-read for anyone who has ever felt frustrated by unnecessary commas on menus, who has shuddered when the incorrect ‘your’ is used in an email and for anyone standing in the queue at the ‘ten items or less’ (fewer!) checkout in the supermarket is simply torture. Read, digest and enjoy. The Faraway Tree - Enid Blyton Joe, Beth and Frannie have moved into to a new house and discover this fantastic place right on their doorstep. They quickly make friends with Moonface, Saucepan Man and Silky the fairy and are transported to different lands and places. The series is a childrens classic and it’s like a big bear hug on a chilly October evening.

NOW at Rye Meads

Leaf Litter Are you swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves, either from trees in your garden or from a neighbours? Leaves that are allowed to build up can cause problems - on the lawn they smother the turf grasses, causing patches of die back, due to lack of light and oxygen. If the crowns of less tough herbaceous perennials or alpines are covered in leaves, they too start to deteriorate. So you need to do something and the sooner the better! A spring-tined rake is perfect for the lawn, and can also work well on a gravel drive. If you have a large lawn or a lot of leaves the easiest way to deal with them is to mow the lawn. Provided you keep the grasscollector on the mower, when you empty it you’ll have a fantastic mix of grass clippings and chopped leaves. On beds and borders you can pick up the leaves by hand, or invest in a leaf vacuum or blower. After collecting them, make leaf mould, which is a fantastic soil mulch or conditioner…for free! Leaves are best rotted down on their own (they take longer to decompose than the rest of the stuff in your compost heap and need less air and warmth), so make yourself a simple and inexpensive leaf mould bin. Drive four stakes into the ground to make the corners of a square, and attach chicken mesh around the outside to make a cage. Stack the leaves in, tread or firm them, then add water if they’re dry and water if the weather remains dry. Chop up larger or tougher leaves (like horse chestnut) first so they rot down much faster - either mow them or ‘chop’ them with a sharp spade. Avoid very spiky leaves, and those that are leathery and tough - mainly evergreens such as holly, laurel and camellia, or those from sycamore and plane. You can speed the process up by adding a leaf mould activator. You can also make leaf mould in a good quality bin liner, cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag, loosely fold over the top and weigh it down with a brick, and leave outside. If you don’t like the idea of black plastic, there are some lovely jute mesh bags which can used in the same way while the leaf mould is forming, but will eventually rot down and add to the useful material you produce. Whichever method you choose you should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but leave it a bit longer and it will be even better!

Hertfordshire Orienteering Club informally known as Happy Herts (HH)

Orienteering is a sport in which you find your way around a course between control points marked on a specially drawn coloured map while choosing your own route. You can walk or run at your own pace, and may even get to see places that others don’t as these events are often held on land with no public access. Courses range from about 1·5km for children and beginners to over 10km for experienced adults. The challenge of navigating quickly and accurately, while on the move, makes for an extremely enjoyable sport and provides a mental challenge to add to physical exercise in often beautiful countryside. Is Your Life Being Run by Your Emotions? Our emotions are designed to constantly flow and change (e-motion = energy in motion). But sometimes we can get stuck in overwhelmingly negative states and end up feeling stressed, anxious, depressed, fearful, angry, useless, stuck or unhappy. These negative states can change our behaviour and hold us back, making us feel as if we are no longer in control of our lives. If you have been experiencing negative emotions, would you like to explore what is behind them and to understand how you can change or manage them so that you can begin to feel happier, healthier and more confident? Emotional Freedom Techniques Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) is a clinicallyproven therapy which is becoming increasingly popular. It is often used within the sporting and performance industries and celebrities who have famously used it include Lily Allen, Madonna, Michael Ball, Alex Reid and Michael Flatley. EFT can be used on anything and can help to clear negative emotions, make peace with past traumas, change unhealthy beliefs, transform destructive patterns and even help with pain and physical problems. It allows you to uncover blocks, improve confidence and increase general happiness and wellbeing.

How does EFT work? Traditional counselling focuses on talking about problems to make sense of them. With EFT we use questioning and visualisation techniques to get in touch with the subconscious mind so that we can explore what might be behind the negative emotions. We then make specific statements about what we have found while tapping on acupuncture points to help release any stuck emotional energy. The phrases we use, along with the tapping, allow cognitive changes to happen quickly and clients usually experience big shifts in how they think and feel. Is it safe? EFT is very safe and gentle and is suitable for working with big repressed traumas as well as more current issues. Strong emotions can be released in a safe, painless and controlled way, leaving you feeling much happier and lighter. How many sessions will I need? EFT is faster than traditional talking therapies. Some issues will literally shift in a session while others will take longer, especially if they are built on complex childhood programming or if they have many different aspects to them. Why not come and try a session and see what EFT can do for you? eleanor@perfectlyyoueft.com www.perfectlyyoueft.com
