St Albans Shakespeare Festival This year marks the 400th anniversary of the death of the greatest and most famous playwright in history. Running until June, the Festival celebrates Shakespeare’s legacy through a variety of artistic media. Many events will take place at the Maltings Arts Theatre, home of OVO theatre company, the Festival organisers. Romeo and Juliet 5th May 1.30pm & 7pm Maltings Arts Theatre Let’s All Dance Productions An edgy, explosive production engages audiences of all ages, with its high energy Hip Hop. The lovers and their contemporaries communicate via text, their words magnified and projected onto backdrops, clothing, the floor, props and skin. Jacqui Dankworth 20th May 8pm Maltings Arts Theatre For the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death, Jacqui thought she would visit the musical settings of Shakespeare’s poetry inspired by, and taken from, the seminal 1964 album “Shakespeare and All That Jazz” composed by her late father, Sir John Dankworth, for her mother, Dame Cleo Laine. The arrangements include settings such as Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer’s Day, O Mistress Mine, the story of Macbeth and a comical setting of Shakespeare’s complete works. The brilliance of the music, the genius of Shakespeare’s poetry and world class musicians combined with Jacqui’s emotional and virtuosic voice will make for a very special concert. As You Like It 26th - 28th May 8pm 28th May 3pm OVO Roman Theatre of Verulamium It’s 1967. Pressured by the generation gap, lovers Rosalind and Orlando escape the city and journey to the Forest of Arden where they become entangled in a beguiling game of love, lust and mistaken identity. This vibrant and uplifting interpretation of Shakespeare’s glorious comedy is a magical trip to the summer of love, complete with live sixties soundtrack set in the atmospheric surroundings of the Roman Amphitheatre for another of OVO’s hugely popular open air productions.

The Abbot’s Kitchen in St Albans Cathedral is a great place to enjoy lunch and refreshments Their ethos is to only use nothing but the finest quality ingredients from local suppliers. Abbots Kitchen Scones The gentler you are with this dough the softer and lighter your scones will be. 125g self-raising flour 4 tsp baking powder 200g caster sugar 275g butter (chilled) 450ml milk (keep some to brush the tops) Set the oven at 185°C Sift all dry ingredients together. Grate the butter into dry ingredients and then crumble by hand to a sandy consistency. Add enough milk to bring together to create a soft dough. With your hands gently bring together and press flat. Cut out (don’t twist the cutter, as this will cause them to pinch and rise unevenly) brush tops with milk and bake for 12 - 15 minutes. Eat with clotted cream and jam while still warm.

If you don't fancy taking on all three disciplines, you can share the load in a team of up to three. You must be 12 years+ and under 18's must be accompanied by an adult. Five Miles to Fabulous 7th May & 11th June From Morrisons, Hatfield Road at 9.30am, meeting by the cycle stands. These are easy-paced, womenonly rides. The leader selects the route based on weather, group preference and any interesting themes or events on the day of the ride. You will cycle for a bit, have a coffee stop and ride back. In spite of the ride name, it’s often more than five miles, usually nearer ten!

Jutland 100 honours those who lost their lives at Sea, 100 years on from the Battle of Jutland, the largest naval battle of WW1 The Battle between the Royal Navy and the German High Seas Fleet was fought over 36 hours on 31st May 1916. It saw the loss of 6,094 Royal Navy seamen and 2,551 Germans, but failed to break Britain's blockade of the North Sea. While both sides claimed victory, the damage to the German Fleet was such that Germany avoided fleet -to-fleet engagements for the remainder of the war. The Royal British Legion is encouraging the country to commemorate the sacrifices and contributions made by all those from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy, fishing fleets, shipbuilding towns and coastal communities who continue to guarantee our maritime nation’s security in peace and war. The Legion is the nation's biggest Armed Forces charity, and national custodian of Remembrance. De Havilland Needs You Many of the aircraft at de Havilland Museum are on display outside and exposed to the weather, including the last example of the Comet 1A the world’s first Jet Airliner. To ensure their survival they must be protected; the Museum has been given permission to build a large Hangar costing around £1.5 million, they have £400k but still need to raise a further £1 million and so have launched ‘Buy a Plaque’, a lasting way to make a donation by buying an engraved brass plaque that will be permanently displayed in the new hangar. The Museum receives no on-going financial support from the government, lottery grants, or any external corporate sources. Their funding comes entirely from ticket sales, ‘Friends of the Museum’ memberships, merchandise sold in the Museum shop and bequests and donations.
