everyone can climb “During the Easter holidays my friend Lewis and I tried out the climbing wall at Westminster Lodge. It was the first time I had done it and I felt quite worried about whether I would be able to climb the wall. The instructors were really kind and helpful to everyone who took part as we were all at different levels. First we played a game that helped our technique and skill called ‘bouldering’. Then we did ‘traversing’ which means moving across the wall from one side to the other. On the walls there are ‘roots’ and you try to follow them up the wall. I managed to reach the top and felt very proud to achieve this on my first attempt. The biggest wall they have is 12m high, I managed to get halfway up, you have to be strong to get to the very top! When someone is climbing up the wall you have to ‘belay’ which means supporting and pulling on the rope so that it’s as tight as possible when the person is climbing which makes sure they are safe at all times. I would recommend trying out the climbing wall to anyone as it was really fun to do.” Mollie, age 11

Kimpton May Festival
Kimpton village is hosting its 49th May Festival from 3rd to 6th May. This four day event starts on Friday with the Art Show opening night in the 13th century church and an exclusive English Wine Tasting Event hosted by Mark Buckenham of The Wine Society. The Festival theme this year is ‘Toy Box’, what was your favourite toy growing up, maybe it was a board game or a cartoon character? Saturday’s street procession of up to 30 themed floats will almost certainly include some of your favourites. Saturday night’s concert ‘Kimpton Entertains’ has in the past helped launch a few showbiz careers, with hopefully some more this year. Sunday night showcases local brilliance of the cerebral kind at ‘Brains of Kimpton’ while the new ‘Music Night’ has music galore with ‘Oasiz’ providing a great tribute act, supported by ‘Nick and the Sun Machine’ together with other local bands. Children’s activities include fairground rides, a football tournament, maypole dancing, the comedy clown duo ‘Wacky Tumblairs’ and sheep dog herding, not sheep, but geese - good luck Shep! Beating the Bounds The ancient ceremony of Beating the Bounds will be re-enacted on 5th May at 2pm starting from Kingsbury Watermill in St Michael’s Village, St Albans. The procession, led by the Mayor and officers of the District Council, including the Town Crier, will follow the medieval boundary of the town as defined in 1327. At key points, various dignitaries will be ‘bumped’! It’s free to join the walk, the route is just over 2 miles long and takes around 2.5 hours. Beating the Bounds 2012

Midnight Walk This year, the event on 11th May will start and finish for the first time at St Albans Football Club, Clarence Park. There will be a choice of 10 or 5 mile walks around the streets of St Albans starting at 10pm. Men are welcome to join the ladies and are encouraged to wear something pink! Get on your bike for Grove House! Following the popularity of cycling inspired by Team GB’s successes last summer, Grove House is introducing ‘The Herts Cycle Challenge’ giving local residents the chance to show their cycling skills while raising money to support local families dealing with life-limiting illnesses. The Challenge will take place on 21st July, starting and finishing at the Old Albanian RFC, St Albans. The event offers two different routes covering 10 or 50 miles and caters for experienced cyclists as well as novices, families and children. Both routes will take you through the beautiful countryside of Hertfordshire, with plenty of opportunities to refuel and take in the stunning scenery surrounding the local villages. oak apple day Hertfordshire Garden Show Knebworth House 4th - 6th May
In the past 29th May was known as ‘Restoration Day’ or ‘Oak Apple Day’ and celebrations date from 1660 and the restoration of Charles II. In his diary Samuel Pepys said that Parliament ordered the 29th May, which was the King’s birthday, to “be kept forever as a day of thanksgiving for our redemption from tyranny and the king’s return to his government, he returning to London that day”. As a result until the mid 19th century there were church services of thanksgiving. But there were other celebrations on this day too. Oak boughs and oak apples were used for decorations. One writer in the 18th century noted that in Barnet every horse, carriage and carter was decorated with “oaken boughs and apples in memory of this once famous day”. Children sang a special rhyme: “Twenty Ninth May, Royal Oak day, Give us a holiday, Or we’ll all runaway” And if they caught anyone not wearing an oak apple in memory of King Charles, they were ready with bunches of stinging nettles. In another rhyme they would chant “Show your oak apple, Or I’ll sting thee” Houses, shops and inns would be decorated with spring flowers, and there were often fetes. One such fete used to take place in St Michael’s village. Charles H Ashdown writing in 1893 recalled that from Gorhambury Lodge to the open area around the bridge there was a line of stalls. The street was decorated with flags and oak branches. But the highlight was a procession led by the ‘Mayor St Michaels’ dressed in the “most fantastic manner” and riding on a donkey. There was also a greasy pole in the yard attached to the Angel Inn, which previously stood at the junction of Verulam Road and Branch Road. Anyone who succeeded climbing it won a prize and there was dancing by torch light late into the night. But why the oak apple and greenery? This recalled how during the Civil War Charles escaped capture by hiding in an oak tree. Oak Apple Day was finally abolished as a public holiday in 1859. urban beach weekend
Verulamium Park in St Albans is one of six venues to gain new beach volleyball courts after the Olympics, made with sand taken directly from Horse Guards Parade and the training courts in St James' Park. To mark the opening of the courts on Saturday 25th and Sunday 26th May St Albans City and District Council will be hosting an ‘Urban Beach Weekend’ of free beach activities for the whole community to enjoy including free taster sessions, free tournaments and free coaching with local club coaches. recipes from Abbots Kitchen at the Cathedral May is a month of celebration. Although summer does not officially begin until June, May Day marks its beginning. May Day celebrations have their origins in Roman times, when the Festival of Flora, the Goddess of fruit and flowers was held annually from 28th April to 3rd May. It’s now celebrated on the first Monday of the month. Traditionally on this day village folk would cut down young trees to stick into the ground on the village green. They were decorated with flowers and ribbons, and the children would dance around them weaving the ribbons into plaits around the pole. This symbolised a welcome to the summer planting months. Once the warmer weather appeared crops and fruits began to grow and without the modern forms of storage we have today ways to utilise these were needed. One popular way was jam and preserve making. Rhubarb was a particular favourite why not try using it in a Bakewell Tart.
rhubarb and ginger jam
25g / 2oz root ginger, grated 1kg / 2lb 4oz rhubarb, diced juice of 2 lemons 1kg / 2lb 4oz granulated or jam sugar 600ml / 1 pint water 100g / 4oz candied ginger, chopped Combine all the ingredients in a large saucepan, cover with a clean dry cloth and leave to stand in a cool (not cold) place overnight. Place over a medium heat-high heat and cook, stirring often, until thick and clear, this should take about 20 -40 minutes. While your jam cooks sterilise your jam jars by boiling in water for 10 minutes. Then remove leaving upside down on a clean cloth to dry. Once cooked skim off the foam top, then ladle the jam into jars loosely place lids on top, when cold tighten lids. Store in a cool dark place eat within 6 months.
rhubarb and ginger bakewell tart pastry 125g / 5oz plain flour 75g / 3oz cold unsalted butter, diced 25g / 1oz caster sugar 1 egg separated pinch of salt
filling 2 heaped tbsp rhubarb and ginger jam 150g / 8oz unsalted butter at room temperature 150g / 8oz caster sugar 3 beaten eggs plus 1 egg yolk 150g / 8oz ground almonds zest of 1 lemon 1 tbsp flaked almonds
First make your pastry, either by hand or in a processor. Mix together the flour, butter, sugar and salt until they resemble breadcrumbs. Add the egg yolk and 1 tsp of water mix until they form dough. Flatten into a disc, cover in cling film and chill for about 40 minutes. Roll out the pastry on a floured board to about 3mm thickness. Line a 20cm wide 3½cm deep fluted tart tin with the pastry; prick the base with a fork and chill for 20 minutes. Bake blind (using parchment paper and baking beans) for 20 minutes until pale in colour, in a pre heated oven 180c fan / 160c / gas mark 4. Take out the parchment paper and beans; glaze the base with egg white and cook for a further 2-5 minutes, cool slightly. Cream together the softened butter and sugar gradually add the beaten eggs and egg yolk. Fold in the ground almonds and lemon zest. Spread the jam over the base of the tart and carefully top with the almond mixture. Bake for 20 minutes, then scatter the flaked almonds on top and return to the oven for a further 15-20 minutes until golden and set. Serve warm with custard or cream or cold for afternoon tea.
