Inheritance Tax - Are You Liable?

recent survey showed that two thirds of those liable for Inheritance Tax (IHT) are unaware of the current nil rate band thresholds. It’s therefore no surprise that in the last seven years IHT payments to the government have double from £2.4 billion for the 2009/10 tax year to £4.8bn for 2016/17. Inheritance tax is the tax paid on your estate after death. When you die, the government will assess the value of your assets, less any debts, to calculate how much IHT is owed. The current nil rate band is £325,000. There is no tax payable on the value of an estate below this amount, but for any part of an estate valued above this, IHT is payable at a rate of 40%. It is important to know which of your assets are included as part of your estate. Frequently mistaken assets include; property, pension savings, vehicles, life insurance policies,

agricultural land, business assets and nonexempt gifts. All of which could be liable depending on your individual circumstances, it’s best to seek professional advice if in any doubt. Research has shown Frequently that a worrying 38% mistaken assets incorrectly believe their include; property, main home is not liable pension savings, for inheritance tax. Despite the introduction vehicles, life of an additional ‘main insurance residency nil rate band’ policies…. in 2017, the value of many properties in the current market will mean they are over the threshold and not totally exempt. July marked the 150th anniversary of the start of passenger services from St Albans station to London on the former Midland railway line. For most of the mid-1860s thousands of workers, called navvies, were employed constructing the railway on what had been green fields at the eastern end of the town. The workers lived in huts on site and had their own off licence as well as the nearby newly built Midland Railway Inn (now The Horn) in which to spend their wages. The workers’ encampment was disbanded in 1867 when the contractors put material from 700 workers’ huts up for auction. The goods station at St Albans came into use on 9th March 1868. Passenger services began on 13th July 1868 but terminated at the Metropolitan Railway Company’s Moorgate Station as St Pancras station was still under construction. The formal opening of the line took place on 1st October 1868. A 2nd class return cost 2 shillings and the Government required the railway company provide a number of trains each day with cheap tickets at 1d a mile. There were several fast services into St Pancras, a journey time of 32-34 minutes. Passenger bookings trebled between 1872 - 1901 to just over 140,000 a year.

Flamstead Scarecrow Festival 17th - 19th Aug Each year residents from Flamstead village create fabulous scarecrows and display them around the village, and visitors can vote for their favourite scarecrows. The festival is run by volunteers for charity, this year they will be raising funds for St Leonard’s Church, the historic church which is in threat of closure if the roof is not repaired.
