St Albans Shakespeare Festival 2016 marks the 400th anniversary of the death of the greatest and most famous playwright in history. Running from March to June, this Festival celebrates Shakespeare’s legacy through a variety of artistic media including theatre, choral singing, symphonic music, poetry, stand -up comedy and dance. It takes in all 37 Shakespeare plays (and poems) in some form, comprising 31 performances by 14 different artists and companies in a dozen locations across the city. Many events will take place at the Maltings Arts Theatre, home of OVO theatre company, the Festival organisers.

Five Miles to Fabulous Ride 5th March Ladies why not start the cycling season on International Women's Day. Meet at Morrisons, Hatfield Road, St Albans at 9.30am by the cycle stands.

The rides are for women who want to cycle, but are put off by the state of the roads, the traffic and lack of suitable group rides. This is an easy 5 mile ride with a coffee stop, using quiet roads and traffic freeroutes. The ride gives an opportunity to gain confidence and discover routes that avoid busy roads.

Tom is offering a day of wildlife and nature photography at Rye Meads Nature Reserve. He knows the reserve like the back of his hand and will be an excellent guide as you walk around.

He’ll be focusing on the key skills needed to help you improve your photography, and will answer all your questions.

When the Hospice was chosen to be the main beneficiary of the St Albans Half Marathon, I saw the Walking Half Marathon event and I thought: ‘why not?!’ I emailed my personal trainer and asked if he thought I could do it - he did, so I applied and added it to my bucket list!

Battle of Berkhamsted Common Walk 6th March 4pm This Battle was a historic victory for ordinary people who saved this open space from wealthy landowner, Lord Brownlow who enclosed the common for his own use. In the dead of night on 6th March 1866, a specially commissioned train brought carriages of East End hard men and labourers to Tring. By moonlight, they joined locals to tear down the iron fences that Lord Brownlow’s agents had erected around the common. Easter Events & More Knebworth House

Dogs and Daffs Charity Dog Walk and Fun Dog Show 13th March Banish those winter blues and put your best foot forward for charity. The beautiful grounds of Hatfield House will be open for walkers and their dogs with four rambles for all abilities.

There will be a fun dog show where proud owners can show off their faithful friends in categories such as ‘Most Handsome Dog’, ‘Dog Most Like its Owner’ and ‘Prettiest Bitch’.

A vet will be on hand to discuss the benefits of micro-chipping and owners will have the chance to have a professional photo taken.

Organised by the Digswell Place Group Riding for Disabled Association the event hopes to raise much needed funds.

Easter in the Gardens & Park 25th & 26th March Explore the Maze and Dinosaur Trail, enjoy the spring flowers and birdsong, try out the new Bouncy Castle in the Adventure Playground, ride on a Vintage Bus and take part in the Children’s Easter Quiz Trail. £1 Jousting 27th & 28th March 12.30pm & 2.30pm The Knights of Arkley are jousting again with the turrets and towers of Knebworth House providing a spectacular backdrop to the action. Costumed knights on majestic warhorses will gallop across the arena in a fantastic display of horsemanship while others will demonstrate their skills in hand to hand combat.

Before each performance children will have a chance to try fighting for fun with the knights and their squires at ‘Knight School’.

The Green Dragon Bowmen will also offer visitors the chance to try archery for a small charge.

A Successful 10 Years I first came up with the idea of Women with Waders 10 years ago. It started off with just two of us, and I soon realised I had come up with a good idea, a pond maintenance company run by someone who had experience in the aquatic trade and knew about ponds.

Since then we have seen a steady growth in business and our workforce increased to 13 during our busiest period last summer. As many of you may know, we are no longer an all female company; some of our team are men.

One highlight of the last 10 years was my time on BBC Radio 4`s Women’s Hour. I was chosen, along with two other women in business, to be featured for a year showing the highs and lows of running a small expanding business. I was given a mentor for the year who taught me a lot; the whole experience was invaluable. Even now, new customers mention they first heard of Women with Waders on Women’s Hour.

Another highlight was in 2012 when we won “Most Enterprising Business” in the FSB’s Hertfordshire Business Awards. It dawned on me that other people thought I had a great business too.

2015 was also a great year for Women with Waders when the demand for our services was unprecedented; mainly due to the great bunch of people who work for WWW. Apricot and Cumin Pork Shoulder There are few traditions I love more than a meltingly slow-cooked roast, pork shoulder lends itself particularly well to this, its natural fattiness ensuring that the meat stays moist. It also means that it’s almost impossible to mess up. Pork remains good value, and there’s always leftovers for the rest of the week.

My Weekend Kitchen programme, on BBC Three Counties Radio features recipes every week, pulling together easily cooked, very tasty food suitable for tight budgets. This recipe was created by one of our regular guests, Theo Michaels (MasterChef 2014). He stuffs pork shoulder with a fruity sweet filling, making the roast very moreish.

1 kilo pork shoulder, de-boned 1 large onion, thinly sliced Several cloves of garlic, still in their skin Stuffing: 2 ripe apricots, chopped 5 dried apricots, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped Large pinch of rosemary leaves, chopped 4 sage leaves / Salt and pepper

Glaze: Squeeze of lemon Pinch of ground cumin Olive oil / 4 tbsp apricot jam Squeeze of honey Cornflour, for the sauce Pop the sliced onion and garlic cloves into a roasting tin. Unroll your deboned pork shoulder, mix up the stuffing ingredients and layer the mixture onto the pork. Roll the pork back up and tie with string. Lay the pork, cut side down, in a roasting tin, add 125ml water, cover it tightly and roast at 170C / 150C fan / just below gas mark 4 for 2½ hours, it’s ready when the meat is meltingly soft. Once ready, leave to rest on a board for 20 minutes, sieve the juices from the tin into a pan, simmer and add a little cornflour. Keep stirring well and leave the sauce to cook and thicken. Mix together the glaze ingredients, pour over the pork and pop it back in a hot oven (230C / 200C fan / Gas Mark 8) for 10 minutes to crisp up and go golden. Serve with roast potatoes, vegetables, the cloves of garlic from the pan and the lovely gravy.

Clean For The Queen 4th - 6th March A campaign launched by Country Life in partnership with Keep Britain Tidy to clear up Britain in time for The Queen’s 90th birthday in June. It hopes to rally volunteers to clean up their local areas and includes a special clean-up weekend on 4th - 6th March.
