I think you’d have to agree with me – they certainly don’t look their advanced age.

With their short white frocks, perky ringlets and sweet faces, they’ve clearly retained their childlike charm over all these decades. We have the artistic expressiveness of my Aunt Grete to thank for these timeless figures still bringing joy to young and old alike after 85 years. Quite a remarkable thing, isn’t it?

To commemorate this event, we naturally wanted to do something very special for our angels – and all our friends and collectors who’ve faithfully accompanied us on our decades-long journey. So we’ve sent our Birthday Angel on its way to spread warm joyful wishes on this momentous occasion. We’ve featured our Birthday Angel on the cover and provide more information about this unique figure – only available through early 2009 – on page 4.

I would also like to invite you to join us as we peek into our hallowed sanctum – our Sample Cabinet. As one of the most important fixtures of our company, it holds a vast collection of one-of-a-kind designs and rare items from the rich 90-year history of our workshops. In our article on page 9, you can read more about the childhood memories I personally associate with this mystical cabinet and the treasures of a completely different kind we found when renovating it.

We moreover present an entire series of beautiful new items in this issue, all available as of 2008 in your favorite outlet. These include a historical Knitting Lady to once again enrich our collections – the first of her kind for more than 60 years.

And, as always, you’ll meet another long-time company employee in these pages, one whose family history has been intertwined with our workshops for generations.

Gerlinde Lange is the painter who adorns our fanciful Spring Music Boxes with perfected flowers and whimsical details, making this new item into something very special in more ways than one – and bringing you melodic spring greetings from the workshops of Wendt & Kühn.

The year 2008 is dedicated to the 85th birthday of the famous little angels with the spruce-green wings and eleven white dots. The celebration also carries through to our new series for this year – with the sweetest anniversary wishes in this Year of the Angel being carried on the wings of a very special emissary: the exclusive Wendt & Kühn Birthday Angel. Like each of her many siblings, our Birthday Angel also sports the unmistakable green wings which have made our cherubs so famous all throughout the world. Our Birthday Angel will only be available through early 2009.

This special creation commemorates the long history of these angels with their green wings and eleven white dots: the very first celestial musician made its trade fair debut in 1923, kicking off a triumphal procession of winsome white-frocked herald angels that has yet to cease. These very first angels came bearing a violin, a flute and a torch, by the way. Our diminutive cherubs are very sociable creatures, continually embracing new instruments and pursuits over the years. Today, in addition to 66 musical emissaries, the Grünhainichen angel flock comprises 50 other winged creatures (including Cupid and Angels on Sleds). Our angels were celebrated as far back as the 1937 World’s

Fair in Paris, taking home the Gold Medal and the Grand Prix. The Birthday Angel is the youngest figure of this successful angel series, her colorful blossom a sure sign of many more fruitful years over which the medley of tiny angels will continue to flourish. Our Birthday Angel is accompanied by an entire flock of other darling cherubs, poised to strike up a melodic birthday round with their array of instruments. The Angel with Bassoon on clip demonstrates her aptitude with this very demanding instrument while our Sitting Angel with Triangle has it much easier – although both are as charming as can be!

Another very special addition is the Angel with Barrel Organ. The elaborate design of the ornate barrel organ evokes a wistful touch of nostalgia. Looking down on the whole spectacle from her lofty perch in a star, the Angel with Flute delights in her place of honor in this celestial angelic orchestra. For many years our suspended angel graced the heavens alone, but as of 2008, we will be issuing a new suspended angel every single year, beginning with the Suspended Angel with Violin – the perfect addition to your Christmas tree or even as a lucky charm at home or at work. Naturally, when the topic of birth-

days comes up, the topic of birth is sure to follow. To mark such a joyful event, Wendt & Kühn now presents a particularly jubilant memento: a long-legged Stork with Swaddled Infant – guided by a sweet little angel on his back. On slim red legs, our stork strides through the grass to bring this blessed baby to its new home.

You can even specify exactly what he should deliver – a baby boy or baby girl.

Tiny pink or light blue dots on the stork’s bundle are an immediate clue as to the treasure snuggled inside.

An engaging series of sweet, innocent Marguerite Angels first came to life on Olly Wendt’s drawing board in 1935, although at that time only in very limited editions. More than 70 years later, Wendt & Kühn decided to re-issue these precious treasures, three each in 2005, 2006 and 2007. Due to the strong demand voiced by our collectors, this series was then continued in 2008. The “Marguerite Angel with light ring”, the “Marguerite Angel with knitting needle & thread” and the “Marguerite Angel with hare & carrot” have now secured their spot within this group of merry little ambassadors and will certainly gladden the heart of any collector come Christmastime.

Spring awakens and with it, the growing desire to work wonders in one’s own garden. With watering can and rake, our two industrious gardeners clear all traces of winter away from their freshly-sprouting flowers and work the soil to ensure the most cheerful blossoms all summer long. Even a colorful butterfly has already alighted atop the small mound of flowers to herald in the coming of summer.

Much love for detail and a whimsical childlike design make these spring figures tiny ambassadors of the joy and smiles which spring bestows on us all. For the Goose Family, today is a festive day at the big pond: Mrs. Goose and Mr. Gander, decked out in their finest, make a courtly pair on parade. Her light blue bow is fashionably paired with her elegant stand-up collar and jaunty yellow wide-brimmed bonnet. Not to be outdone when it comes to elegance, Mr. Gander sports a crisp black top hat and a proper yellow walking stick – a truly dapper figure.

First day of school – what an unforgettable event! These tots, so excited to soon join the ranks of the Big Kids, have donned their finest, too – a favorite dress and a smart suit. And what would the first day of school be without a book satchel on one’s back – finally, they are Schoolchildren for all the world to see! Bursting with

pride, they each also have their own huge school cone – heavy, yes, but certainly not a burden as they are packed to the brim with goodies and treats to make this first day of school all that much sweeter.

Collectors of our annual figure editions now have twice as much reason to celebrate: the whimsical Bavarian Girl, our nominated Figure of the Year for 2007, is no longer alone! She met her new friend on her stroll into the city – Bavarian Boy, whom we now present as our 2008 Figure of the Year. Perhaps even our own Cupid had a hand in this chance encounter… As with all our annual editions, our dashing Bavarian Boy comes in his own elegant passepartout presentation box to lend a worthy setting to his genteel nature.

To see the most industrious of craftsmen at work, simply step into our workshops.

These are worlds unto themselves, filled not only with innumerable tinkering hands creating our unmistakable figurines, but also where our own genuine journeymen come to life from simple pieces of wood. Three of them have been on their journey travels since 2007; wherever they go, winning the hearts of all those who appreciate fine craftsmanship. They are now joined by an energetic Brickie with Brick and Trowel and Carpenter with Hacksaw and Plane. Grete Wendt created the altogether seven-man group of figures after the end of World War II as

Dresden was being rebuilt. Today, apart from devoted collectors, these industrious lads also delight all those with a vested interest in the building trades whether as a do-it-yourselfer or a seasoned professional – perfect to commemorate passing a Journeyman or Master craftsman examination or finally moving into a home of one’s own.

Two sweet little girls in polka-dot summer dresses dance around a nosegay of blossoms atop our enchanting Spring Music Box (illustration on page 8). All the while, the 18-tone Swiss music works plays the melody: “Kommt ein Vogel geflogen” (“A Bird Comes A-Flying”). Frolicking with unbridled joy amidst the warm sunbeams, the two children scamper across the flowering meadow to pick daisies for their mother. Particularly distinctive is the elaborate hand-painted body with its colorful swath of flowers. To exemplify all our music box painters responsible for the blossoming of such miniature works of art, we will introduce you to Gerlinde Lange on pages 12-13. We recently roused this design from its decades-long slumber in our archives. How wonderful that these carefree children now once again dance their springtime roundel for us!

What better way to crown the end of a beautiful day than with a nostalgic Evening Song (illustration on page 8) from an artistically hand-painted Wendt & Kühn music box? Already in our collection for many years, this beautiful music box now also comes with a wind-up mechanism.

The richly painted body of this melodic work of art is an enchanting depiction of a sleepy village under a star-studded sky. A little girl kneels atop the music box singing a lullaby to her baby sibling and gently rocking the infant to sleep. The assortment of tiny trinkets strewn next to the girl attests to an eventful day full of play, fun and gaiety.

Rainy afternoons are meanwhile made cozy by inviting a few close friends over for a relaxing knitting circle. The knitting needles clink, the fresh coffee steams and the chit-chat abounds.

The re-issue of our classic Knitting Ladies showcases their beautiful handiwork as never before. These full-figured ladies have been at the top of collector wish lists for many years. They hide balls of yarn under their skirts; the ends pulled out to the knitting needles from small bags on their arms. These Knitting Ladies made their first appearance in 1930/31 in a grand assortment of colors and shapes.

Beginning in 2008, we are reissuing the first of these figurines in what will again become an extensive series. This charming young lady in the Biedermeier style, captivating in her fancy white hat and pink dress bedecked with dainty daisies, is a true gem. You can now look forward to a new Knitting Lady every year – because these ladies are at their finest among company.

Colorful Tales from the Sample Cabinet Anyone who has ever visited our workshops in Grünhainichen can regale you with tales from what is undoubtedly our company’s most famous room: the Sample Room with its huge Sample Cabinet.

The door directly on your right when you enter the old half-timbered house opens to a room in which the company’s most cherished treasures have been sheltered for more than 90 years. The heart of the Sample Room is the huge Sample Cabinet, among the new company’s first acquisitions shortly after its founding; in fact, this was the very first company-owned furnishing. By now, it’s simply inconceivable to think of our workshops without it.

The Sample Cabinet which Grete Wendt had built still stands in the same place as it did when she commissioned it. Long ago needing to be enlarged, its vintage aura is what makes it so special to visitors coming to view its display of samples from our world of figurines. And as it was, so it remains: as if peering into a great opened book, those who come to visit simply stand in awe before it. These beautiful pieces from Wendt’s visionary “toys and knick-knacks” roots have lost none of their power to enchant. Even as we call it our “grand” Sample Cabinet, it is of course still too small to hold all the figurines and music boxes created since the company was founded. One spies many unusual things when standing mesmerized in front of the cabinet – models and items no longer made today yet all still indicative of the tremendous diversity of designs epitomizing the Wendt & Kühn world.

The Sample Cabinet holds a few hundred different creations from the workshops: angel musicians, blossom kinder, soldiers, fairy tale figures and many other diverse treasures. Hundreds more sketches are archived in thick design portfolios awaiting the day when they, too, turned into a beloved wooden cohort or enchanting music box, will be given a place of honor in our Sample Cabinet.

The Sample Cabinet today Renovated in 1997, the Wendt & Kühn Sample Room grants a vision of the fertile world of figurines created in the workshops. Besides for the bounty of figures, documents detailing the company’s eventful history and other examples of our artistic trove are also on display.

This repository is thus a stable constant at Wendt & Kühn. Much has changed in the years since its acquisition, yet the Sample Cabinet itself remains. The old publishing house is no longer being used as a private dwelling today, instead now accommodating the offices of the workshops and a charming retail shop.

The room in which the Sample Cabinet stands also serves exclusively as the Sample Room today. In earlier times, it was simultaneously used as the office for processing orders from all over the world. “I can still remember the huge map of the world which used to hang in the Sample Room and how much it fascinated me when I was just a kid,” relates Tobias Wendt, today’s managing director of the workshops. “The map was crammed with countless pins, each one symbolizing a customer somewhere in the world.”

In bygone days, the three glass doors of the Sample Cabinet were lined with fabric to conceal its mysterious contents.

When the doors would then be opened, a chorus of “Ooohs” and “Ahhhs” would go up around the room as visitors were overcome by the sight of all the treasures inside. The legendary checkered fabric which made the whole experience so suspenseful was removed many years ago so that the contents of the cabinet are now immediately visible to all who enter

the room. The old half-timbered house, where our Sample Room has always been located, was lovingly renovated in 1997.

In the process, the old Sample Cabinet was also disassembled and then rebuilt by skilled specialists. It received a new coat of paint as well as interior lighting and now gleams again with all its former splendor. This renovation work also unearthed something utterly unexpected: a stockpiled wealth in the hollow spaces within the cabinet’s lower section – flour

and sugar at the far left, bottles of wine in the middle, and hard liquor on the right.

The wine dates from 1935 to 1938 and bears the labels: “Olly” and “Grete”. The two ladies had probably squirreled these supplies away in 1945 as a hidden reserve and simply forgot about them after the war – they certainly had more important things to do at the time: Grete Wendt had to see to securing goods so production could continue, finding options and material to keep the workshop areas heated, not to mention coming to terms with the new post-war conditions. The Sample Cabinet meanwhile also survived this era, symbolizing the conscientious overseeing of the venerable inheritance left by founders Grete Wendt and Grete Kühn as well as designer Olly Wendt.

In the course of the 1997 renovations, not only the Sample Cabinet, but the entire Sample Room was given a facelift. Many additional display cases, designed to match

the external character of the original Sample Cabinet, were added to supplement our showroom and to feature numerous further designs that simply would not fit into the Sample Cabinet. And yet even these additional display areas are wholly insufficient to showcase all the designs created within these walls since the company’s founding in 1915.

How large would a cabinet have to be to hold all our designs? That will probably always remain a mystery because we’d have to find room for one thousand creations… and counting!

Wendt & Kühn Family Ties

Gerlinde Lange, just turned 57, has spent more than two-thirds of those years at Wendt & Kühn. The allure of the cherubic little figurines is somehow in the family blood: her mother was a gluer at Wendt & Kühn and her son works in the undercoating department.

Such family ties are not that uncommon at our workshops – many employees seem to feel so “at home” here anyway, as if working together in one big family.

Gerlinde Lange began her career as a painter; since 1971, she has specialized in the artistic adorning of our music boxes.

She is currently working on our new intricately-painted Music Box “Round Dance” – for an experienced painter like her, a particularly ambitious and rewarding task because it demands a great deal of skill and intuitiveness: “It’s especially important to distribute the flowers evenly across the body. After all, the overall end effect should be a picturesque illustration,” Gerlinde explains.

Gerlinde also has a very special relationship with flowers in her spare time: “I love to putter around in my own flower garden,” she relates. “Sometimes I also paint everyday items drawing on my own ideas.

This has led to turning many different cabinets, chipwood boxes and other items into unique, colorful showpieces.” Nice to be able to combine hobby and career in such a delightful way! Among her favorite activities at work is all that which involves free painting, for example the savings banks, the “Evening Song” Music Box and the new Music Box “Round Dance”.

The bodies for the new Music Box “Round Dance” are painted in Gerlinde’s department. Only afterwards are the music works set in place. “We use a dozen colors and just as many different brushes and paint the bodies for the music boxes in 17 consecutive production steps,” says Gerlinde in allowing some of the inside story. Each music box she paints reflects her own personal style.

“I can pick them out again immediately.

One can see the small idiosyncrasies that every painter has. They’re minimal, but each music box painter has his or her own style,” says Gerlinde.

Gerlinde runs through part of her work day as a music box painter for us: “Usually the hardest thing is creating an even surface. Then the music boxes first get primed and smoothed before applying two layers of varnish. The varnish coats

are painted on with a brush, we use copal resin to get the primer’s surface so smooth and glossy. Then the music boxes are painted with their individual designs, for instance with stars for the Angel Music Box or the colorful flower garden for our Music Box ‘Round Dance’.” But does Gerlinde herself have a personal favorite?

“No,” she replies, “I find them all wonderfully charming. Although I do have a special affinity for the old Knitting Lady which we found in unpainted individual pieces when we cleared out the attic back in the 70’s. My old colleague Mr. Karlheinz Börner painstakingly restored and painted her for me.”

Gerlinde says that her work has not changed much over the nearly 40 years that she’s been at Wendt & Kühn. Her routine is pretty much the same as it was when she first started. The designs are the same, only the paints were applied in somewhat thinner coats in the past, making them seem more like a glaze. It’s safe to say that the only thing to have undergone a dramatic change is her actual

workplace. While the painters still work in the same building, the rooms today are light, airy and spacious – a far cry from the 1970s standard.

Of course, anyone who has worked as long at Wendt & Kühn as Gerlinde Lange has is also lucky enough to have known the founder of the workshops, Grete Wendt. Lange has fond memories of that time: “Since the train schedule didn’t mesh very well with my work schedule in the 70’s, myself and some other colleagues would stay late in the workshop two days a week. Grete Wendt would often come through the paint shop during those late hours and enjoyed shooting the breeze with us. While we laughed and kidded around, we also learned a lot from her about painting techniques and color effects. The thing that was always closest

to her heart was making sure that all her winsome creations presented that overall adorable impression,” recalls Gerlinde.

Gerlinde especially enjoys having contact with the customers. “It’s so nice when you realize how much enjoyment our figures bring to other people,” she says. One experience she had on an Open House Day stands out in particular for her and her eyes light up as she relates it: “People take a lot of photographs of us during our Open House Days. Two visitors – a father and his daughter – took a photo of myself and a colleague. They were very interested in our work and we chatted for a long time.

One year later, here come the same two again and they gave us an 8" x 10" blowup of the photo they took of us the previous year. Isn’t that the sweetest gesture?

They are true Wendt & Kühn fans and they always come to all our Open House Days.”

After work, Gerlinde can usually be found relaxing in her idyllic home at the edge of the forest in the neighboring village of Floßmühle. There was never any desire to leave her home village: “I was born just a few houses down, this is where I grew up, where I spent my entire life. This is where my roots and my lifelong friends are, it just never crossed my mind to move away from here, even if I miss my grandchildren in Ulm dearly.” We at Wendt & Kühn are very happy to hear that; it means that Gerlinde Lange will be painting many more music boxes to come in her beloved accomplished style.

When the air raid sirens would go off, we’d race to the bunker and sit on wooden boxes which held various items, among them Wendt & Kühn figurines ....
