Christmas Wishes

Dear Friends, What do you wish for this Christmas? Is it the latest mobile phone, a new laptop, peace in the world (or just at home), or time to spend with those we love? The adverts on the television will be trying to tell you that happiness can be bought, at their shop or on their website, and that it is all about giving gifts in order to feel close to each other. Even when the other person is on the moon!

sometimes in the countdown of “Shopping days to Christmas” we can forget that the real reason for the season is the gift that God has given us. Sometimes it might feel like God is a million miles away, perhaps further than the moon, but Christmas is the reminder that God wants to be close to us. When we remember the birth of Jesus all those years ago, and we remember that he came to earth to be one of us because he loves us so much, we might start to understand how valuable we are to God. And when we realise what it is we have been given, and the love that is behind the gift, then we understand the reason for the celebrations and the joyful songs that tell of the wonder of the birth of God’s son.

Of course, it is nice to give gifts and it is also very nice to receive them. It is really special to see a smile on the face of the other person when they open the wrapping and you can tell that they really like whatever you bought or made for them. And those times when we receive a really thoughtful gift we experience that warm glow of knowing that someone is thinking of us, we are remembered and loved. It doesn’t have to be a big gift; it really is the Last year’s Free Church Nativity thought that counts. But with live animals, see page 3

Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan

Aylesbury Vale District Council is asking local residents, businesses and community groups to have a voice in the future of housing, jobs and key policies, as part of consultation on the next stage of the Vale of Aylesbury Local Plan (VALP).

Following approval by councillors, a document setting out the issues and options for the VALP has been produced and is available to view at www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/valp. Residents have until 4 December to view this document and give their views and ideas on what the plan should achieve, how new homes and jobs should be distributed, and what new policies could be introduced to manage development between now and 2033. Councillor Carole Paternoster, Cabinet Member for Growth Strategy, said: “We need to build another 31,000 new homes in Aylesbury Vale by 2033 and the new Local Plan will provide the framework for how the Vale will grow and develop to accommodate this. It is really important that people take this opportunity to get involved by letting us know

what they think about the different options we have identified and by raising any issues they feel need addressing.” The Local Plan will, once finalised, provide firm guidance on how planning applications should be considered and say where new development should or should not take place. This is the second public consultation stage in the new Local Plan’s preparation and it includes nine potential options for distributing new development. The options include developing urban extensions at Milton Keynes/Bletchley; using land more efficiently by raising the average density of new development; creating a whole new settlement somewhere in the Vale; and a combination of these. You can view the consultation and give feedback via www.aylesburyvaledc.gov.uk/ valp. The responses received will inform the development of a draft local plan. There will be two further consultation periods prior to the Local Plan public examination in 2017.

December 1915 The Gallipoli Campaign was acknowledged as a failure and the allies began to withdraw. The Battle of Verdun ended with 550,000 French and 450,000 German casualties. General Sir Douglas Haig replaced Field Marshal Sir John French as Commander in Chief of British forces in France. Strict instructions were sent from both the British and the German Headquarters forbidding a repeat of the Christmas 1914 fraternisation, but that did not stop some minor gatherings in No Man’s Land on Christmas Day. As a result, two British officers appeared in front of a Court Martial, but, because of their good service records, received only light reprimands.

In Wendover efforts were made to entertain the troops who were billeted locally. The Parish Church Record noted that: “Teas were served on Xmas afternoon and again on Boxing Day afternoon to nearly 400 soldiers. There were two ‘sittings-down’ each afternoon and everything went without a hitch in spite of the fact that not a single piece of bread and butter had been cut at 1 o’clock. HS2 In the case of Wendover if it was just barriers for example it probably means you could not claim it is noisier, however you could claim it was more visually intrusive.

If the rumours are true then sometime after the end of November the Select Committee will finally make a decision on the mitigation for Wendover. By then most of the Wendover petitioners will have been heard, including our MP David Lidington. Now whatever the mitigation is the details will be contained in what is termed Additional Provisions – AP5. These changes will go out for consultation and those who are impacted will have the opportunity to petition again.

the Select Committee would tell them to do. Now as I write this the Select Committee have not heard the detail about TBOW – Tunnel bored one way from the south. Neither have HS2 Ltd., so it is not surprising that they have not mentioned it. That being the case we can only hope that on the 25th November Hilary Wharf put up a good technical case for it, that Wendover HS2 have strongly supported it and David Lidington has thrown his support behind the proposal. We should know soon.

So what is likely to be in AP5? We know what HS2 Ltd. would like it to be, because they have published a summary – an extension to the green tunnel to the south by 100m and a whole load of 6m high noise barriers. Now when I first read this I thought that it was completely undemocratic that it had been decided while the Select Committee were still hearing petitions from Wendover. However it was pointed out to me that this was just HS2 Ltd. trying to get ahead of the game by doing the work on the minimum changes they thought

So AP5 could contain the changes necessary for a tunnel, could be extensions to the green tunnel or just a collection of barriers. So we should all read AP5 with interest. Now people adversely impacted by AP5 will have the opportunity to petition against it. However I need to mention that HS2 Ltd. are taking a tougher stance on AP petitions. Their argument is that it is not sufficient that you do not like it, you have to be specifically Lets hope the Select Committee put them right. adversely impacted by the Additional Provisions compared to the original scheme. Brian Thompson

I said earlier that HS2 Ltd. have not mentioned the TBOW tunnel because they are at this point unaware of it, however even if they did know about it they would still continue their stance of denying us a tunnel as not necessary. They have not listened to the petitions, and only pay attention to the Select Committee. So it was not surprising that they were continuing this mantra on the 7th November when they turned up in Wendover for an information day. Despite the horrible weather the turnout was excellent. I have to say I did not learn anything new. The HS2 Ltd script was the same as ever – their scheme is wonderful, you have no real problems, you do not need a tunnel.

Local News Sharing Pavements

Wendover News has been asked to pass on that unpowered scooters and skateboards may not be used on footpaths, pavements or cycle tracks, as they have no right-of way (source - The Independent, 12 Oct 2015). Cycles are only allowed on pavements where they are designated as shared use. Mobility scooters are only allowed on pavements if they travel at or below 4mph; otherwise they should use the road. Although the above information is all correct, enforcement of a ban on scooters and skateboards on pavements is very difficult, and they are also not allowed to be used on roads, leaving little choice for their riders. Please share the pavement, and don’t ride if the pavement is crowded.

Chosen Charity The Trustees of The Wendover Swimming Pool are delighted that Wendover Parish Council has nominated the pool as this year’s charity at the Christmas Evening on Friday 4 December. We will be there on the night, so please visit us and let us know your thoughts on this valuable community asset. We are seeing increased numbers of swimmers at all times, whether mid-morning, evening lane swimming or weekend family splashes. Are you coming to any of these sessions? Is there anything else you would like to see at the pool? Several swim schools offer lessons for every age and ability, from babies to adults, as well as a swim club and fitness classes. Have you or your children signed on yet? We are always interested in hearing about your swimming experiences. Over the past two years we have set up a charity to take over the management of the pool and we have shown that we can successfully run it for the community. This has only been possible with the significant help we have received from grants contributions (particularly the Lionel Abel Smith Trust), and the time given by our amazing team of volunteers. Without our volunteers, the pool would have shut. On that note: We need more volunteers. Our volunteers cover all sorts of areas – from tidying the pool area to front desk administration for our public swimming sessions. Many of these roles do not need detailed training, nor are they a fixed long-term commitment: even a couple of hours a month could make a tremendous difference. Come and chat to us at the Christmas Evening and find out how you can help keep this pool open for the community. Alternatively, contact us via our website www.wendoverswimmingpool.co.uk. See ad page 9. Open: Tue: 6pm-11pm Wed-Thur: 11.30am-2.30pm & 6pm-11pm Fri: 11am-2.30pm & 5.30pm-11pm Sat: 11.30am-3pm & 5.30pm-11pm Sun: 11.30am-5pm

Now you can enjoy Debbie’s brilliant meals and drinks in truly elegant surroundings. Please note, they are taking a well earned break from 21 December to 5 January.

You Write Macmillan Fundraising 2015

I am delighted to report that this year’s fundraising has reached another record total of £7.341.00. Thank you so much to everyone who got involved and gave me such fantastic support this year. This money will help make a difference to many people and their families who are facing the toughest battle of their lives. Once again my very grateful thanks. Julie Needle

“Voice for Esmé” Concert Thanks

Thank you for the support that the local community showed Saturday 7 November for the “Voice for Esmé” concert at St Mary’s Church. Listeners enjoyed the acclaimed Weybridge Male voice choir and soloists performing an array of pieces which included remembrance pieces with Remembrance Sunday the following day. Colonel James Barnett from RAF Halton, accompanied by 2 other officers in full dress uniform, helped raise awareness of Esmé’s condition and raise funds for her future needs and training.

We’d also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who this year has helped us to raise money and awareness for Rett syndrome and Esmé’s Allstars. We’d especially like to thank all the runners for One True Grit including The Wendover SparrowHawks, members of MS Centre, RAF Halton and locals. If you’ve been to one of our quiz nights, curry nights or cake competition, our Black Tie or Concert for Esmé or even run a Marathon (Anna B), we thank you all for your care and support. Next year we will be hosting even more events to raise vital funds and awareness for Girls with Rett Syndrome and Esmé. If you’d like to help us, then please get in touch on esmesallstars@yahoo.com or www.facebook. com/esmesallstars or Twitter @esmesallstars. Abigail & Anthony Davison-Hoult

Ethical Produce?

I bought a box of Medjoul dates from the Wendover market. They had a prominent label in Arabic: Jordan River. There was a tiny trade mark HADIKLAIM. No stated country of origin. On browsing the web, I found that this is a deliberate ploy by the Israeli exporters to conceal the origin of their produce. Some may be grown in Israel proper, but most is from the occupied West Bank, where the only employment available to many Palestinians is minimum-wage work for the illegal Israeli settlers in dangerous conditions. Children are routinely taken out of school, illegally, to pick the dates. The exporters mix a llittle Israeli produce with a lot from the illegal settlements and sneak it into our shops, even those which try to be ethically conscious. Before anyone accuses me of anti-Semitism I would like to identify myself as an anti-Zionist Jew, one of many who believe that Israel will never stop grabbing Palestinian land and provoking violent resistence without external

Bats and Owls at RAF Halton

Here at RAF Halton not only do we have the barn owl that lives and hunts around the airfield but also the tawny owl that can be heard in most of our woodland, but especially around Halton House. Wendover News December 2015

Tribute: Ron Welch On 12 October 2015, Wendover lost one of its most caring and charismatic residents Thomas Ronald Welch, Ron to everyone who knew him. He was born in Lincolnshire in 1928 and settled in Wendover with his family in 1970. Young enough to miss fighting in World War 2, he was determined to forge a successful life and career, though circumstances made his academic path difficult. However his determination and strength of character won through and after studying at night school he qualified as a Chartered Chemist in 1952. He worked in Road Research from 1946 and developed a new surface first used on a street in Lydney, Gloucestershire. He was admired for his conscientiousness, thoroughness and determination. He always succeeded in achieving anything he set out to do. He joined BP in 1956 and stayed for 31 years, retiring in 1987 after an extremely successful career.

80s. The elderberry was the best and I recall a potent tasty drink of about 15% alcohol. I have fond memories of picking the berries around Wendover in my schooldays in the 70s – it was an excellent use of this free fruit that usually goes to waste. His orange wine went into his famous punch, which made for much merriment at many summer parties held from the 70s to the 90s at Garden House in Wendover. I hope some readers will recall these times. He played football in his 20s and headed the winning goal in a local cup final for Uxbridge. He became a keen tennis player and joined Wendover Tennis Club in 1970. In 1981 he was inspired by the ‘running boom’ and at the age of 53 did Abingdon marathon in a time of 3h54. He got down to 33m30 at the Hillingdon 5mile and 16m10s at Gunnersbury 2.5m, plus a 1h33 Reading half-marathon. Extraordinary performances I can’t get close to now I am a similar age. I enjoyed many wonderful weekends going to races with Dad in the 1980s.

Since he retired in 1987, he entered a remarkable and wonderful phase of life in which he completely changed focus from his corporate career to helping people in pain. He studied hard and qualified in Alexander Technique, Cranial Sacral Therapy and Vortex Healing and built up a detailed knowledge of human anatomy. He explored the human energy system and became a powerful and much sought-after healer. He developed an integrated, eclectic healing approach that focussed on his clients’ wellbeing, adapting techniques to find what worked best. He helped many people recover from serious injury. One long-standing client told me only Ron could relieve his shoulder pain; no other conventional or alternative methods worked.

In parallel to his new healing vocation, a spiritual quest and in particular heart energy became central to his life. From 1998 he was He met Marian in 1949 at a dance and drawn to the Heart Healing run by Jill and Joe they bonded over their shared love O’Carroll from Vancouver, Canada. He came of music. Local Face: Amanda Ryan Amanda has lived in Wendover for virtually all of her life – she was born in Aylesbury and lived in Wendover throughout her childhood where she attended each of the Wendover schools. Little did she know that at the age of 15, Amanda would meet her future husband, Matt! Despite Matt moving away to Devon, their relationship continued until Matt eventually moved back to Wendover and they married in 1997. They moved to Aylesbury for a few years when they both worked at Trusthouse Forte and in 1999 their first child Sam was born. Not long after, they returned to Wendover and Sam was soon followed by Rebecca, Charlie and Joseph. Family plays a huge part in Amanda’s life. She has happy memories of Sunday lunches with her Grandparents, who also lived in Wendover. Today this continues as her parents, Neville and Rosemary Morton, and sisters, Julia and Claire, meet regularly, giving the children a chance to spend time with their cousins.

Aside from her duties as a mother of four, Amanda juggles the busy life of family and friends and is an active member of St Mary’s church where she also finds time to sing in the St Mary’s music group.

Amanda’s day job is as the Church Administrator of St Mary’s and she can be found in her office at the back of the newly refurbished Just on the High Street. The role of the church office is to manage the administration of St Mary’s Church

here in Wendover and St Michael’s Church in Halton. In light of the variety of activities that take place in and around St Mary’s this is a significant role. Amanda Ryan is the face behind the emails and the phone calls who enables all these activities, from baptisms to burials, and from concerts to classes, to run smoothly. Her friendly and efficient approach enables the ministry and outreach of St Mary’s to function well. Amanda is ably supported by a team of volunteers who work alongside her, but as the main lead in parish administration Amanda holds the reins. As Mark Dearnley (Vicar of St Mary’s) told us, “Having a well-run parish office is such an asset. It frees me, and the members of our ministry team, to tend to other aspects of the life of our church family. Amanda and those who assist her do an important job in our community, for which I’m very grateful.”

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

As we enter the season of goodwill to all men (and women), it’s very sad to note the devastation caused to the Florence Nightingale Charity shop by some lowlife who were intent on thieving cash from the ATM. They must be very stupid people if they believe they can get their mitts on other people’s property and get away with it in this day of Internet banking and CCTV. I really hope that in a few weeks time when the Constabulary have done their work they will be brought to justice and made to face the people whose property they have damaged. It is also sad to note that in the last few weeks there has been an incident at St. Mary’s Church. The ‘key safe’ has been wrenched off the wall and stolen. Because of this the Church will be locked during the day while the security system is reviewed. The HS2 Select Committee are still hearing petitions from Wendover folk. A really huge thank you on behalf of the community to all who have presented to the Select Committee. Aside from the hard work in preparation there is also the mental anguish in presenting to such an organisation. For most it’s the first time they will have had to present their views in such a way. In my mind it has certainly raised the issue of whether we do live in a democracy and whether the people’s views really do count. We now move forward to petitioning on Additional

provisions as and when they arise (but note saving LED lights and will, hopefully, look the short timescales) and then trying to get even better than usual. the House of Lords to hear our cases. It just remains for me to wish everyone in Wendover a Happy Christmas and prosperous New Year and to say thank you for all your support in 2015. Robert Duggan, Chairman.

The Question of Grants

In the near future the Parish Council will be taking over a range of services from Transport for Bucks. Grass verge cutting, sign cleaning, footpath edging and some enforcement tasks, will become the responsibility of the Parish.
