Christmas Wishes

Dear Friends, What do you wish for this Christmas? Is it the latest mobile phone, a new laptop, peace in the world (or just at home), or time to spend with those we love? The adverts on the television will be trying to tell you that happiness can be bought, at their shop or on their website, and that it is all about giving gifts in order to feel close to each other. Even when the other person is on the moon!

sometimes in the countdown of “Shopping days to Christmas” we can forget that the real reason for the season is the gift that God has given us. Sometimes it might feel like God is a million miles away, perhaps further than the moon, but Christmas is the reminder that God wants to be close to us. When we remember the birth of Jesus all those years ago, and we remember that he came to earth to be one of us because he loves us so much, we might start to understand how valuable we are to God. And when we realise what it is we have been given, and the love that is behind the gift, then we understand the reason for the celebrations and the joyful songs that tell of the wonder of the birth of God’s son.

Of course, it is nice to give gifts and it is also very nice to receive them. It is really special to see a smile on the face of the other person when they open the wrapping and you can tell that they really like whatever you bought or made for them. And those times when we receive a really thoughtful gift we experience that warm glow of knowing that someone is thinking of us, we are remembered and loved. It doesn’t have to be a big gift; it really is the Last year’s Free Church Nativity thought that counts. But with live animals, see page 3
