With around 200 commons, from more than 100ha to less than 0.01ha, they are a vital feature of our historic landscape. The historic use of commons has left a legacy all around us today. At this fascinating one-day seminar, our guest speakers will provide an insight into the history of the Chiltern commons and their heritage from the dawn of time to the 20th century. Other numbers will run side-by-side until All electrical work undertaken the end of March, but if demand for the current number drops 01296 625185 07944 251828 it may be discontinued earlier.

In January the NHP team will arrange opportunities for people to come to the police station to mark any new IPods, mobiles, laptops and other such items. Keep an eye out in next month’s newsletter for this. I would also like to make a personal plea to all party-goers leading up to New Year to not drink and drive. By all means have fun but please think before you drive both after a night out and in the morning after enjoying a night out. If you are going out and know you will be drinking, organise alternative transport or a designated driver to ensure everyone is able to enjoy the festive period safely. Stop checks will be carried out in your neighbourhood. PC Jo Smith Anti-Social Behaviour In November, no complaints were received regarding the previous problem behaviour on the central park/play area of Princess Mary Gate. Two groups of youths were moved on by local officers, but the incidents were minor, the children failing to consider how easily their voices were travelling. The police have also received positive feedback from various residents living near to the park who have stated that the situation has vastly improved. The local officers will continue their patrols whenever possible. We would also like to take the opportunity to advise residents that the earlier incident of disorder on this estate was in fact an isolated and domestic related incident and not connected to normal day to day activities in the area.

HS2 HS2 announcement delayed The new Transport Secretary, Justine Greening, has delayed her announcement about High Speed 2 until January. In a written statement to Parliament, she said: “Since taking up office in October I have been considering the issues, raised as part of the consultation and additionally have listened to the views of Honourable Members. In order to ensure that my decision is based on a careful consideration of all relevant factors, I have concluded that I should allow myself until early in 2012 to announce my decisions. I am therefore notifying the House that I will not be making a further statement on the subject of high speed rail this year, but I expect to announce my decisions in January.” To read David Lidington’s www.wendover-news.co.uk

I am fortunate enough to have grown up in Wendover and I have always been proud to be a Wendovrian, and in particular of our welcoming, open spirit. There is always something going on in the village, and everyone is welcome to participate and share the joy. Over the last 20 years, the makeup of the High Street has changed significantly, with different shops coming and going, and all have been supported by the good people of Wendover as far as I know. I was so disappointed to learn that this has changed. A new coffee shop applied for change of use of the old Barclays Bank building, and some local shopkeepers decided to start a petition, indulging in a vicious campaign to prevent another coffee shop from opening. This conduct is wrong, unethical, and the very opposite of what I consider to be in the spirit of a Wendovrian. Personally, I don’t like coffee, but I truly detest this disgraceful behaviour and I believe it has no place here – your shameful conduct is a stain on our beautiful village. Having done a little research into the matter and discovered that far from being a corporate giant, Costa Coffee is a franchise based organisation, and the group that wants to open a store in Wendover currently has 7 stores, this will be their eighth. I am yet to hear of how a chain of 8 coffee shops can threaten the very fabric of our society. I have also discovered that the new store will need staff, and that in their other stores, over 80% of staff are under 25. Given that youth unemployment recently hit 1 million, do we really want to encourage youth unemployment in Wendover? I’m also curious as to how many coffee shops is too many? Is there a mathematical formula? Surely that is for the

You Write consumers of Wendover to decide, not rival shopkeepers. There are several public houses, a similar number of hairdressers and salons, as well as competition within other markets such as flowers, antiques and estate agents. As far as I know, none of these shopkeepers have gone out of their way to exterminate competition in such a callous fashion. So next time someone there is a petition against bringing jobs and investment to the village, I hope all Wendovrians will carefully consider whether they really are prepared to endorse such a campaign. Wendover Parish Council Page

Matters Arising View from the Chair As we look to 2012, some things never seem to change! The lights go up in the village, the decorations in the shops and the streets, everyone in a festive mood. Thanks to Wendover Chamber of Trade and Commerce and Jill from the Clock Tower for organising a wonderful late night shopping evening on 7 December. Congratulations to Lets Rent for their winning shop window. Congratulations also to the runners up and, in fact, all the entrants. Our target next year is to get ALL shops to enter. Another idea for 2012 is that we encourage other competitions throughout the Parish. How about best garden, best citizen in different categories (Senior and Junior), best village organisation, best employee in the village. We could have an awards ceremony at the 2012 late night shopping event. Any other ideas for competitions to the Clock Tower marked for the attention of Councillor Walsh. Christmas comes and goes and we are now looking forward to 2012. Others make reference to W endover Celebrates. I would also like to plug this event which takes place at the beginning of June. A lot of people are already working hard to ensure it is a success. If you want to volunteer in any capacity contact Wendover Celebrates through their website or via the Clock Tower.

Finally I would like to thank the Councillors and staff of Wendover Parish Council. Councillors are unpaid and commit a lot of their personal time to ensuring that things move forward in the interest of the people of Wendover. Sometimes things don't work out and projects don't get off the ground as quickly as others but by sheer perseverance we are getting there. Special thanks to Jill Bottomley and all staff for all the hard work and unseen effort that ensures that things are being steered in the right direction. The Parish Council would like to thank Jane Larkham, editor of the Wendover News, for her generosity and support in getting ‘Matters Arising’ off the ground.

Christmas Lights We have a new system of lights for the Clock Tower this year as the old ones were failing and there was concern about possible damage to the building by the old heavy frames. This is our first year with the new system. It is much cheaper and easier to change than before and improvements can be made as we go along. The white light theme will be kept and we hope to upgrade the lights for the Christmas tree next year.
