Wendover Celebrates
The Bonfire and Fireworks event took place on 5 November at Ashbrook/Castle Park. Tickets sold out within days of release. Great entertainment and fun for all led to positive feedback.
Wendover
Celebrates
started in 2012 to celebrate
HM Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee and was planned as a summer event that would be organised thereafter every two years. Covid changed the pattern - hence a different celebration this year with 1000 visitors attending. Side stalls and a variety of musical entertainment plus the bonfire and fireworks, drew in Wendover and have raised much needed funds for Wendover Dementia Support and the Scannappeal. Watch this space for the final figures.
Thanks are due to Fiona, Matt and Carole for carrying the baton of Wendover Celebrates for so long; time for a well-earned rest. Having
being involved myself as a director since the very beginning, I hope someone else takes on the role but it has been an absolute pleasure to be involved with the organisation of such a successful community event which has raised in excess of £38k for worthy local causes. Thanks too must go to the various companies, sponsors and donors who have parted with their cash over the years to ensure that Wendover Celebrates has remained to put on various events that have given joy to thousands of local people of all ages and interests. Bob Duggan
A Warm Welcome in Wendover
In response to the cost of living challenges, “Warm Welcome” spaces are opening up around the country and Wendover is no exception. “Bridging the Gap” inter-generation group, already offers a warm space with hot drinks on Tuesdays 10am to 12noon and 1.30pm to 3pm at Wendover Christian Centre (WCC) (on Aylesbury Road, opposite Wharf Road, behind St. Anne’s Church). Churches Together in Wendover opened a Wendover Warm Welcome space on Thursday 24 November, also in WCC. This will be available on most Thursdays from 2pm to 5pm, with light refreshments and a Saturday time is envisaged. Watch for posters and on social media. Feel free to attend. To volunteer contact Wendover News.
Wendover News, established 1989, is delivered through the door to many local households. If you do not receive one at home and would like to volunteer to deliver for us to your road, please contact the office (see above). Wendover News would like to thank all its willing volunteers.

HS2 Commissioners visit
The HS2 Independent Construction and Residents Commissioners visited Wendover to help resolve our current issues in November. We’ve escalated HS2’s apparent avoidance of the night-time peak noise requirements in the Act to the DfT, and we await a response from the new Minister. On the Water issues Bucks Council and the Environment Agency now understand that both aquifer groundwater and surface storm drainage from the Wendover area will flow downstream increasing the flood risks in Stoke Mandeville and Aylesbury. They have asked for further consideration of the design before giving approval. We also pointed out the unreasonable number and timing of proposed closures of the A413 during the festive season, and inadequate roadside advanced warning. The Commissioners had some success with similar A413 problems at Little Missenden, and we’ll work with them on all three areas.
Construction works
Meanwhile work has started on building the temporary bridge for the Ellesborough Road diversion over the cutting works (top photo). This should enable dump trucks to cross the road without disrupting local traffic from next spring. A similar bridge has been installed for the Nash Lee Road
diversion (bottom left photo). Piling work has also started for the Small Dean Viaduct foundations (bottom right photo).
We’re still expecting the plans for the Small Dean Viaduct and Embankment to be submitted very soon, and these will become available on the Bucks Council/AVDC Planning Applications website (just search for “HS2”).
Got an HS2 problem?
Please make use of the HS2 Helpdesk (which is available 24 hours a day) on 08081 434 434 to register your complaints! The commissioners also advised us to make sure that your issue is registered as a “complaint” and get a case reference number to ensure some action. “Enquiries” may just get counted by HS2…
Want to get involved?
Planning submissions
In the Green Tunnel design submission there are landscaping proposals for about 25 acres near the old Cricket Ground, but we would like your feedback about how the area should be used. Should it become parkland, sports facilities, or a nature reserve? Thanks to those who managed to navigate the whs2.org website to give us their opinions. We would welcome more responses and a direct link is now available at www.whs2.org/survey.htm
If you would like to help us “Do what’s right for Wendover”, have a look at our website whs2.org where you’ll find details of what we’re doing. If you need further help, want to join us, or have ideas and suggestions that would mitigate the community impact, then get in touch at enquiries@whs2.org

Tax efficient gifting at Christmas
For many of us, Christmas is, amongst many things, a time for giving. I thought it might be a good time to outline how some gifts can also be tax efficient as well as festive!
Inheritance Tax (IHT) is expected to affect more people over the next few years as the current tax-free amount (£325,000) is frozen until at least 2026. IHT-efficient gifting is one way of both providing for others – at Christmas or other times – and reducing your potential IHT liability in the future.
Some of the main IHT “free” gifts include:
• Annual allowance
Each tax year you can give away £3,000. NB this is a total of £3,000 and not £3,000 for each recipient. An unused allowance can be carried forwards by one tax year.
• Gifts on marriage or civil partnership
You can give £5,000 to a child before they marry or enter into a civil partnership; £2,500 to a grandchild; and £1,000 to someone else. You can also give £1,000 to their partner.
• Potentially Exempt Transfers.
If you make a gift of any amount and survive it by (currently) seven years, the value of the gift should not form part of your estate for IHT. However, if you die within seven years, there could well be an IHT implication, depending on the value of the gift.
• Gifts to charities
Any gift to a registered charity is free of IHT.
If you are considering making gifts for IHT purposes I recommend that you take specialist professional advice first.
If you have any questions, or would like to discuss any of the above, or related matters, please contact me on iain@ wanstallconsulting.co.uk or 01296 415700 You can also find more on my website: www.wanstallconsulting.co.uk and advert page 11

It has been busy at Wendover Youth Centre as we approach Christmas. We have provided a wide range of activities; highlights included a night walk up Coombe Hill and going bowling!
on Saturday 17 December 10am-2pm at the Local Produce Market, Manor Waste outside Budgens. We will be promoting the work we do, as well as selling homemade cakes and biscuits to raise money for the Centre.
SLQ Learner of the Year
In November, Harry Jones, a student at the Chiltern Way Academy in Wendover, was named the national winner of SLQ Sports Leaders’ annual Learner of the Year Award.
The Learner of the Year Award is the annual opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements and progress made by young people taking courses with the awarding organisation before a panel of staff select three runners-up and an overall winner. Harry was selected by the panel after they were impressed with his entry describing the transformation he felt he underwent by becoming a Sports Leader.

Following a week of intensive half-term rehearsals, over 100 local school children took to the big stage at Aylesbury Waterside Theatre for a very special charity production of "Nativity! The Musical". Raising money to fund local hospice care, the one-night extravaganza, which took place on Sunday 30 October, kicked off the festive season in style with a buzzing sell-out crowd and plenty of ‘sparkle and shine’.
Dedicate, Remember, Reflect, Share

The end of the year is always a time for reflection; as autumn turns to winter and the festive season draws near, one thing we can all agree on is that we have seen much change since I last wrote for Wendover News. Our new Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, has pledged to bring stability back to the government after a tumultuous period, and I feel sure that we would all welcome a period of calm.
As a country, we face many serious challenges, not least with the rise in the cost of living – much of it caused by Russia’s illegal and inhumane invasion of Ukraine. The government has made a significant
contribution to assist people through these difficult times, including a minimum £400 grant and an energy price guarantee. There are other national and local schemes to help people who are struggling to cope, and I am always happy to signpost people to sources of assistance.
Locally, I was delighted to reopen the Haddington Playpark formerly the "Helicopter Park" recently (with the lease now transferred to Wendover Parish Council). It was fantastic to see the play equipment reinstated following my representations to ministers at the MOD on behalf of many concerned residents. The enthusiasm of local children showed how well-loved this facility is.
I was deeply honoured to lay a wreath at the War Memorial on the Manor Waste on Remembrance Sunday. It is vitally important for us all to commemorate the sacrifice of those servicemen and women who fought for our right to be free from tyranny. This is
all the more pertinent when we see what is happening in Ukraine and how it is absolutely imperative to ensure evil cannot triumph.
In conjunction with Bucks Council HS2 lead Cllr Peter Martin and your Buckinghamshire Council Wendover councillors, my office facilitated a meeting with the HS2 Residential and Construction Commissioners. This was extremely beneficial, allowing Wendover Parish Council and the Wendover HS2 Mitigation Action Group to present the concerns of the community to Sir Mark Worthington and Stewart Jackson. I will continue to work with the Parish Council and the Action Group to ensure Wendover’s voice is heard.
As this is the final edition of Wendover News of 2022, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, and all those close to you, a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Cutting Waste at Christmas
Most of us aren't thinking about the environmental impact of Christmas when we cut into our turkey, open our gifts, or socialise with family and friends but our three days of Christmas festivities equate to 5.5% of the UK's annual total carbon footprint.
So, let’s consider our impact on the environment and take small steps towards a more environmentally friendly Christmas. Everything you need already exists…
Buying recycled or second-hand items for Christmas presents is a great way to reduce your carbon footprint and save money. Online websites such as Freecycle, Facebook marketplace and Gumtree have lots of listings for children’s toys, household items such as vases, plants and ornaments.
Alternatively, you could visit a local charity shop where you can buy books, puzzles and games and give to a much needed good cause at the same time. In fact, now is a great time to have a clear out and donate any unwanted items that you no longer use
to a charity shop and give them a new lease of life.
Cut down on wastage
According to Biffa, 100 million bags of rubbish are sent to landfill in the UK and we waste around £64million of food over the Christmas period including 2 million turkeys, 5 million Christmas puddings and 74 million mince pies. Why not start by making a meal plan and sticking to a shopping list to minimise food wastage and free up space in your freezer so if you do have unused food, you can save it for another occasion.
Small changes make a difference
There are numerous small changes that collectively will make a huge difference to reducing the carbon footprint of Christmas.
In this unprecedented year of rising costs, let’s remember that what matters most is spending precious time with family and friends and that creates zero carbon footprint.

Christmas Appeal 2022
2022 Christmas gift appeal launches to help support Buckinghamshire’s children
The annual Buckinghamshire Christmas gift appeal, led by the local charity Inspire Bucks, launched mid-November.
Now in its eighth year, the appeal is a big drive to give Christmas presents to vulnerable children in Buckinghamshire who otherwise might not receive much – or anything – at Christmas.
Last Christmas more than 2,000 Buckinghamshire children and young people with disadvantaged backgrounds received presents thanks to the generosity of local donors, who pushed funds well over the target of £10,000. And during the past year funds have allowed birthday gifts to be given to 200 children.
This year Inspire Bucks chairman Paul Irwin says that the impact of rising food prices and energy costs makes it all the more important to ensure children in crisis or need have a happy Christmas.
“Christmas gifts go directly to vulnerable children here in Buckinghamshire, and I’ve seen the wonderful difference this makes to their families,”
said Paul. “Thanks to the fantastic generosity last year, Christmas was a time of cheer for these families. I know these times are tough for everyone, but this year I’m asking the people of Buckinghamshire to pull out the stops again and give whatever they’re able.”
The appeal is inviting donations of money online via the charity’s GoFundMe page https://www. justgiving.com/campaign/buckschristmasappeal
As in previous years, the Inspire Bucks Christmas gift appeal will work closely with Buckinghamshire Council’s social care teams to ensure gifts get to the right families, and that no one is left out.
Paul said gifts of money would ensure suitable presents could be bought for all ages, including children with additional needs and disabilities, older children and young people leaving the Council’s care.
Through its wider work during the past year the charity has helped refugees from Afghanistan and Ukraine, including support for a bike refurbishment scheme for refugees from local volunteers.

Fire Brigade Visit!
The Shepherd’s Hut Outdoor Nursery in Wendover had the great privilege of being visited by Aylesbury Fire & Rescue Service on 1 November. The team arrived in their fire engine and the children couldn’t believe their eyes! They greeted the firefighters by singing their favourite fire engine song. The firefighters joined us in the nursery and asked the children several questions about what they knew about fire safety. The firefighters then mentioned some dangers, with it being close to Halloween and Bonfire night, which coincided with our recent topics and they taught the children what they should do in an emergency – call 999! The children were able to inform the firefighters that we have smoke alarms to help notify us of a fire. We then all had a practical lesson of STOP, DROP & ROLL if they were ever on fire – the children were very good at this! The children then had great fun spraying the fire hose and sitting inside
the fire engine. We are very proud of our children for completing their fire safety lesson. We would like to say a big thankyou to the Green Watch from Aylesbury Fire Rescue Service! TSH
News from Wendover Canal Trust
The towpath on the Wendover Arm of the Grand Union Canal is set to be made more accessible to local people through a £367,000 partnership project led by the Wendover Canal Trust and national waterways and wellbeing charity the Canal & River Trust.
The work has been funded by the HS2 Chiltern AONB Review Group, Wendover Parish Council, Lionel Abel-Smith Trust, Wendover Community Board and Halton Parish Council. In total over 28 local, regional, and national organisations supported the campaign to upgrade the towpath, which was led by the Wendover Canal Trust in conjunction with the Canal & River Trust. These included all the schools in Wendover, the Chiltern Society, Chilterns Conservation Board, Inland Waterways Association, Sustrans and Chiltern Railways.
The project builds on previous small scale towpath improvements undertaken by the two
Trusts in Wendover in the past year. Design work is currently being undertaken and the works are being programmed to commence in January 2023 and be completed by March 2023.
TV personality and vlogger Robbie Cumming has become a patron of the Wendover Canal Trust (WCT) as the charity celebrates its 25th anniversary since work began on the canal’s restoration.
Robbie, who presents BBC Four’s ‘Canal Boat Diaries’ which records his experiences whilst cruising the canals on his boat ‘Naughty Lass’, joins current patron, actor Sir David Suchet CBE of ‘Poirot’ fame. More from WCT on page 21.

Saving Ilona
In October, a stronghold group of local residents joined forces to celebrate a monumental breakthrough in a campaign to save an iconic lone veteran Oak, locally known as Ilona, from unnecessary destruction by HS2. Ilona the Oak is
some 250 years old and supports approximately 2,500 species.
As part of the campaign effort, over 200 letters were personally written to HS2’s CEO Mark Thurston, each with their own reason for protecting Ilona and their beloved historical landscape. HS2 are responding to residents to say that “HS2 are now reviewing their plans.”
This is the first time that a group of AONB residents have challenged HS2 and their contractors by conducting their own surveys, carrying out research and producing reports; culminating in meetings with HS2 and their subcontractors in order to hold them to account and review their plans.

Local support for young onset dementia
Healthwatch Bucks launches new research
project
People with young onset dementia first experience symptoms before the age of 65. This means their support needs may be quite different from those of older people with dementia.
Healthwatch Bucks wants to know how these individuals, and their families and carers, feel about the support they receive. People can offer their feedback in confidence, via an online questionnaire on www.smartsurvey.co.uk/s/ YoungOnsetDementia/ or in person. To chat with Alison on the phone or face-to-face, please contact her via the Healthwatch Bucks website www. healthwatchbucks.co.uk or on 01494 924421.
At the end of the research period for this project, Healthwatch Bucks will provide a report that includes recommendations for improving support for people with young onset dementia to service providers, policymakers and commissioners for review and response.

Wendover Canal Trust (WCT) has staged its biggest ever community engagement event with more than 100 guests from 85 different organisations, to mark the 25th anniversary of work starting on restoration of the Wendover Canal.
The occasion also enabled the Trust to provide an update on its activities, hold a dialogue with representatives from local organisations and thank its current supporters.
At the event, which was held in “Your Café in the Park” in Aston Clinton, WCT chairman Clive Johnson said the canal was almost impenetrable when the decision was taken to restore it and the first task was to clear the hawthorn scrub.
He said that volunteer construction started in 1997 and that "our wonderful volunteers have been doing heavy construction work for 25 years - and we are all unpaid."
He added: "Our plan is that by the end of 2025 we will complete our lining of section which has
always leaked near Tring, then we will restore the water level all the way to Wendover for boats to Buckland, and eventually Wendover. None of this would have been possible without the funders of the restoration and the towpath upgrade.”
The canal and its towpath were becoming a green corridor, he said, “accessible to us all to boost our well-being, with increased biodiversity.”
Ros Daniels (Canal & River Trust Director for London and South East) proposed a celebratory toast and other distinguished guests included Commodore Tim Hennessey, RN DL, Deputy Lieutenant of Hertfordshire; Wing Commander Anna Toothill, Deputy Station Commander, RAF Halton and Councillor Christopher Townsend, Mayor of Tring.
More than 30 WCT volunteers liaised with the guests and the event, held on 1 November, was sponsored by FCC Environment, Fairhive Homes, Independent Hire and Village Environmental Services.

Sustainable Warmth is a new grant funding opportunity delivered by City Energy and the Greater South-East Net Zero Hub on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council. The funding, provided by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy could see hundreds of households benefit from energy efficiency and low carbon heating measures to reduce bills and carbon emissions.
The grants are for households with a gross annual income of less than £30,000 or a household income of less than £20,000 after housing costs and where the property has an energy (EPC) rating of D or lower.
The scheme is open to both homeowners and those who rent privately. For owner occupiers, the work will be carried out for free. For rental properties (whether private or social), the landlord will be expected to pay at least one third of the cost towards the work.
Applications are open to eligible households at: buckinghamshire-applications.co.uk. The closing date for applications is 31 Dec 2022
Buckinghamshire Council has secured just under
£5m of capital funding. This will be allocated as follows:
• £3.2 million through the Local Authority Delivery 3 (LAD3) scheme to support lowincome households in Bucks on the gas grid with energy efficiency and low carbon heating measures such as cavity wall insulation, solar PV and loft insulation
• £1.7 million through the Home Upgrade Grant (HUG) to support low-income households in Bucks that are not connected to the gas grid with energy efficiency and low carbon heating measures such as external wall insulation, underfloor insulation and air source heat pumps
For more information on the funding visit the GSENZH website, www.gsenetzerohub.org.uk/
Anyone worried about their energy bills can access free advice and information via the Big Energy Saving campaign being run jointly by Citizens Advice and the Energy Saving Trust: https:// energysavingtrust.org.uk/energy-at-home/

On Thursday 3 November, The Wendover & Villages Ukrainian Support group (WAVUS) held its launch event in St Anne’s Hall, with nearly 100 hosts, Ukrainian guests and supporters. After a glass of wine, we heard a presentation from the Chair, Andrew Burnett, about the formation of WAVUS, the support we hope to offer, our need for volunteers and the launch of the new website wavus.uk
Following a toast (with vodka) to Ukraine and our Ukrainian guests, a committee member, Tania Orlova, then gave us some insights into the history of Ukraine which helped explain the
current conflict. Finally Svitlana Syrotian from Buckinghamshire Council spoke about the support available to both guests and hosts (in English and Українські).
The chairs were then cleared away and we were treated to a wonderful spread of Ukrainian canapés whilst everyone had a chance to meet others. Though canapés are not part of the Ukrainian tradition, the team came up trumps and the food ranged from borscht to blinis with everything in between.
Wendover & Stoke Mandeville Parish Councils grants.
The Next WAVUS social event will be a Coffee and Chat gathering on Wednesday 14 December in the Christian Centre, Aylesbury Road from 10.30 to 11.45 am. Ukrainian Guests, Hosts and interested members of the Wendover and villages community are welcome. Please RSVP to info@wavus.uk More social events will be arranged, so watch the website for further details.
Our thanks go to David and Marion Payne and their guests Myla, Iryna, Orla and Kate. Also Jenny and Trish. A big thank you to Tanya, Julia and especially Luda Martyniuk who worked so hard for several days. Ladies the food was magnificent! This event could not have happened without the generous support from
In order that we can provide support, we will be reliant on volunteers to help us. We particularly need help with running our social events, form-filling and other admin, transport, English lessons and mentoring/buddying. We have had many offers of help already, but in order to manage this we are asking all hosts, Ukrainian guests and everyone who would like to support us in any way to register with us. This allows us to hold your contact details legally and get in touch with you as appropriate. It's easy - just go to the Join Us page on our website wavus. uk/joinus.html

After qualifying as a nurse at University College Hospital (UCH) in 1975, Sue went on to train as a midwife at Edgware General Hospital then gained experience including acute medicine, intensive care, paediatrics and theatres.
Sue moved to Wendover in 1982 with her young daughters Rebecca and Claire. In 1988, she returned to work with a newly established organisation called Iain Rennie Hospice at Home; joining the original five pioneer nurses who had formed the service. After working in a number of roles, and in 1998 taking a degree in specialist nursing practice, Sue became Director of Nursing in 2000.
In 2007 Sue took a sabbatical from her role in an effort to make a difference to people with life-limiting illnesses in the developing world. With a grant from UCH she spent 7 weeks in India and Sierra Leone. CanSupport, who deliver palliative support in Delhi, invited Sue to attend their annual conference and deliver workshops to doctors, nurses, social workers and volunteers. In Sierra Leone Sue spent time visiting displaced communities, introducing
the palliative care service via paramount chiefs in tented communities that had sprung up during the civil war and had no running water or electricity. Her personal project was to develop the dispensary; writing protocols and policies and training staff in the management and use of medication. This was a major step in structuring the use and storage of medicines and allowed them to apply for and obtain a morphine licence which they achieved during her stay. Having access to this stronger pain relief for patients would go on to considerably improve patient care.
In 2010 Sue was in the first cohort to complete a Masters degree, Hospice Leadership, at Lancaster University Management School. Her dissertation created a blueprint for Hospice at Home, in particular the 24-hour element, and her work in this area resulted in a merger with Grove House in 2011 when the service became Rennie Grove Hospice Care. Sue was Chair of the National Association for Hospice at Home, regional representative on the National Council for Palliative Care, Network Liaison Lead for the Mount Vernon Cancer Network
and Chair of the Bucks Palliative Care Provider Board. By October 2015 Sue had become the first President of the National Association for Hospice at Home, a position offered in recognition of her dedication and commitment to the association and her expertise in the field. She retired in 2019 following 31 years with Rennie Grove.
During lockdown 2020, Sue returned to support colleagues at Stoke Mandeville Hospital as a PPE Safety Officer. She was so proud to be part of such a wonderful team of people and it epitomised her drive to help others in times of need. Sue was so well loved by all who knew her and was as dedicated to her family and friends as she was to her profession. She adored her daughters and was so proud of her five grandchildren: Oliver, Gennaro, Oscar, Rose and Roman.
Sadly for all who knew her, Sue died on 8 October following a short illness with pancreatic cancer. In her final days she was supported by the organisation she had dedicated her career to; at home, in her place of choice, in comfort

Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre is awarded internationally-recognised Cat Friendly Clinic status
Local veterinary clinic Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre has achieved accreditation as a Cat Friendly Clinic (CFC). The CFC programme has been developed by the International Society of Feline Medicine, the veterinary division of the leading feline charity International Cat Care, and accreditation has been made available in partnership with Ceva, Royal Canin, Boehringer Ingelheim, Idexx, Elanco and Zoetis. It aims to promote well-being and high standards of care for all cats visiting or being hospitalised in a veterinary clinic.
Under the programme, a clinic has to prove rigorous adherence to a set of criteria which includes provision of facilities and demonstration of staff activities and attitudes aimed at reducing stress in cats, both as in-patients and out-patients. The criteria include having separate dog and cat waiting areas, feline-friendly hospitalisation cages, and veterinary equipment specifically for treating cats. Most importantly, staff
are encouraged to approach and handle cats sensitively and respectfully. Clinics are expected to maintain high standards of veterinary care, including continuing to update their knowledge of feline medicine as new knowledge becomes available.
Anna Leach MRCVS, the clinic’s Cat Advocate, was proud to receive the clinic’s Silver Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation: “We wanted to make sure that a trip to our clinic was as stress-free an experience as possible for our cat patients and their owners. Cats can get very anxious when taken out of their usual environment, and this can make owners reluctant to seek veterinary attention when their cat needs it. By undertaking Cat Friendly Clinic accreditation, we’ve committed to delivering high standards of cat care, with compassion and expertise.”
The International Society of Feline Medicine launched the Cat Friendly Clinic initiative to encourage veterinary clinics everywhere
to make changes to improve the welfare of cats in their care. The programme advises clinics on how to make their environment as welcoming to cats as possible, as well as providing support in staff training, handling techniques and cat-specific client care.
Cat owners can find out more about International Cat Care and the Cat Friendly Clinic initiative at www.catfriendlyclinic. org. Wendover Heights Veterinary Centre’s website can be found at www.whvc.co.uk and the practice phone number is 01296 623439. See advert page 12.

when
Buckinghamshire Libraries held an engagement day at Wendover Community Library on Saturday 22 October to showcase the design concept and plans for the new library. The day was well attended by approximately 120 people. The plans were well received in the community, with a lot of enthusiasm shared on the prospects of additional meeting spaces and an improved children’s library. Attendees also had some excellent suggestions for further improvement which will be considered for the final design.
We’re very excited to have commissioned the artist Kremena Dimitrova to create a unique art installation for the transformed library. After a competitive process, it was
felt that Kremena’s concept best fulfilled the brief to maximise the impact of the new design of the library building with an installation that is inspired by Wendover’s heritage and communities.
Kremena Dimitrova is a London based illustrator-as-historian, storyteller and lecturer in visual culture and history. She specialises in children's illustration, comics, murals, public art installations, mapmaking/trails, and visual storytelling in the museum and heritage sectors.

RAF Halton Remembers
For this year’s Remembrance Sunday, RAF Halton represented the Royal Air Force at eight towns and villages across three counties. Commemorating those that have lost their lives through war and conflict, RAF personnel from across the Station paraded alongside local dignitaries, other Services, Veterans, and cadet organisations at services of remembrance and wreath laying ceremonies.
In Wendover, OC Policy and Plans, Wg Cdr Toothill laid a wreath.
On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, RAF Halton personnel, joined by children of Halton Combined School, observed a 2 minute silence for Armistice Day at the Station Muster.
The Halton Apprentices Association (HAA) also held a Service of Remembrance at St. George’s Church earlier in November. This service was delivered by the Venerable (Air Vice Marshal) Dr Giles Legood MBE KHC, RAF Chaplain in Chief and Reverend (Wing Commander) Mitchell, RAF Halton Senior Chaplain.

Local Face: Julie Hadley
Julie has lived in Wendover for twenty-four years but has felt so much more a part of the community since starting her role as Parish Administrator for St Mary’s Wendover and St Michael's Halton in January 2022. The Parish Office where she is based is nestled at the rear of the Just Ethical Trading Shop on the High Street, right in the heart of the community and a perfect location to meet and get to know local people and visitors. Julie finds working within the Just shop very inspiring - both for the wonderful array of ethical and fairtrade items available to buy, and to be working alongside the team who staff, manage and run Just as volunteers, all working together to source, buy and display the wide range of products on offer and create wonderful window displays!
When not spending her wages in Just, Julie’s role as Parish Administrator is varied and she very much enjoys supporting the Ministry team at St Mary’s and St Michael’s and to be there for the people of Wendover and Halton at key moments in their lives, whether they be parents organising a baptism, couples planning their perfect wedding, or families navigating grief as they lay lost loved ones to rest. If you would like any information about baptisms, weddings or
funerals at St Mary’s or St Michael’s, then please do pop in and see Julie or contact her at the Parish Office on 01296 623123, or via email at info@stmaryswendover.org
Julie’s role also involves co-ordinating the many activities that take place in the church buildings. St Mary’s has great acoustics, so is a favourite venue for choirs and classical concerts. Please keep an eye out for adverts in Wendover News and posters in Just for upcoming performances. You can often buy your tickets in Just too! The church is also host to many groups and regular activities, including Sparklers for parents and toddlers meeting every Monday morning, Wendover Singers Junior Choir and U3A. Details of regular activities happening at St Mary’s and church services may be found at https://www. stmaryswendover.org (click on What’s On tab).
Christmas is fast approaching; Julie has her work cut out preparing materials for the seasonal services at St Mary’s - including a fun Christingle service (10:45am on Sunday 4th December) and a Carol service at 7pm on Sunday 18th December. On Christmas Eve St Mary’s offers an outdoor Christmas celebration for everyone at 4pm, and
the first Communion of Christmas at 11:30pm. Christmas morning will see us joining together in an all-ages Communion service at 10am.
Outside work, Julie is a keen cook, enjoys the theatre (especially musicals!) and is a new and enthusiastic member of the flower team at St Mary’s, very much enjoying this relaxing and mindful activity. It’s a delight to see all the different arranging styles and creative design ideas when the team comes together for major festivals. Anyone who enjoys flower arranging (or would like to learn) is very welcome to join - there’s no need to be a member of St Mary’s, or go to church. The flower team are holding a Christmas wreath-making workshop on Saturday 3rd December from 9:30am (with breakfast!)why not come along and have a go at creating your own unique Christmas decoration?
Julie looks forward to the privilege of meeting many more of you as she continues in her role and don’t forget to drop into Just next time you’re in the High Street!
For regular Sunday services at all Wendover churches see ad on back page. For Christmas services see page 4.

View from the Vice Chair
I am writing this as our Chair, Councillor Bulpett, is away having a much-deserved break, and standing in for her has reminded me just how much she does for the Parish. It’s an exciting time in Wendover and I personally love this time of year as the seasons change, the festive season kicks in and the children are extra excited as the big day gets closer.
I was extremely happy to be able to help open the Haddington Playpark (formerly the ‘helicopter park’) with our MP, Rob Butler, Buckinghamshire Councillor, Peter Strachan and MOD Principal Estate Surveyor, Jonathan Gasson. Whilst anti-social behaviour sadly led to the closure and dismantling of the park earlier in the year, re-opening a bigger & safer park was testament to the positive collaboration between parents, the wider community, Wendover & Buckinghamshire Councils and the MOD. The children were utterly thrilled that the community had rallied together to re-open the park and to see them playing in the gorgeous Autumn sunshine was a real sight to behold.
I was also honoured to be part of our annual Remembrance Parade and laid a wreath on behalf of our Council. As the war in Ukraine
remains at the forefront of many people’s minds, I was reminded about the launch event of the Ukraine Support group (WAVUS) at St Anne’s Hall only 2 weeks’ prior, which was attended by 100+ guests, hosts and supporters and the spirit of community support and positivity was just wonderful to witness.
By the time you read this, the winning team of our Annual Quiz will have been awarded their prize, and the Christmas event will be nearly upon us. Our team work very hard to bring the Christmas event on the Manor Waste to fruition, with the grounds team trimming and fixing the trees and setting up the lights around the high street to make the centre festive and welcoming. The Clocktower team organise every detail – particular thanks to Jane Ellis who has returned from early retirement to support the team and also to all our businesses who sponsor and support too. We hope to see as many of you as possible on Wednesday 30 November, 4pm – 7pm on the Manor Waste, where the lights will be switched on, awards will be presented and community choirs will be entertaining us.
Right now, against a backdrop of rising costs, the Council is setting the budgets for next year with the aim of delivering the same level of services without adding to the financial burdens of the Parish. As the year draws to a close and we reflect on the events of this year of such change, I hope that we can all take some comfort in the spirit of goodwill and community support which the Parish of Wendover consistently displays and so on behalf of everyone at WPC may I wish you and your families a happy & joyful Christmas and a very peaceful new year. Cllr Jo Durden-Moore
Vacancy for a New Councillor
Notice is hereby given in accordance with Section 87 (2) of the Local Government Act, 1972 that one casual vacancy has occurred in the office of Councillor for Wendover Parish Council.
The vacancy on the council can now be filled by co-option, where the council will select by a vote at the meeting on 6 December. Anyone wishing to put their name forward must contact:

To apply, please fill in the form on the webpage www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/co-option and return to the office by 4pm, Friday 2 December 2022.

Gardening & the weather
Andy & Stefan, our Groundsmen, are working hard to put the grounds, verges, parks and hedges ‘to bed’ for winter but the weather seems to want to delay that process. We are cutting grass well beyond our normal times. We also recieve many reports in the office about hedges, grass and paths. In reality, responsibilities for maintenance and upkeep have a complex history with many different organisations responsible for different pieces of land. The Parish Council will always try to direct you to the right organisation for your query.
