Wendover Parish Council HS2 Update

Following on from the survey, the HS2 WG is pushing ahead to achieve the best possible mitigation and ensure HS2 Ltd meet their obligations / responsibilities under the HS2 Act. We are drafting a response to the letter received from Clive Maxwell, Director General, High Speed Rail Group, to ensure that if the noise limits are exceeded, once constructed, then HS2 Ltd would commit to appropriate retrospective mitigation.

In terms of hydrogeology, settling ponds are being constructed which were not in the original plan so we will monitor this. EKFB are looking to attenuate aquifer and surface water to the south near Grove Farm, before it is piped north and downstream via existing waterways towards Stoke Mandeville village - the Environmental Agency has apparently refused derogation of the Water Framework Directive for HS2’s Schedule 33 application, which could be good news as this is the first time, to our knowledge, that there has been this type of action from the EA.

The next Schedule 17 planning permissions for Wendover will be submitted in July and August.

Thank you

I would like to thank all the people who came to my assistance on Saturday 14 May when I collapsed outside Tesco Express.

I don’t know you, I heard voices and saw hands as you supported my head and covered me to keep warm. There were just 2 people I remember seeing, one was on her phone working to get a message to my wife, the other was the lady with the small dog who was first to come to my help.

She said that she would not leave until I was safe, the only time she left my side was when the ambulance crew arrived, but as I was being taken to the ambulance I saw that she was still close. I will never forget her kindness and care.

You Give - We Give

Budgens sends £100,000 in aid to Ukraine.

The ‘You Give, We Give’ campaign launched in May in Sweeney’s Budgens.

Customers were asked to purchase any blue and yellow symbolic cans with a price mark £1, £3 & £5 and Sweeney’s Budgens would match these donations. All donation money would be spent on essential food and medical supplies and delivered straight to Ukraine by selected aid partners.

Nine other independent Budgens retailers joined the campaign. Dary Sweeney, owner of Sweeney’s Budgens explained how the campaign started. “Alex, one of our store supervisors, advocated we should help a local group to raise money to help the victims of the war in Ukraine. We did this but felt we should do more. I spoke to a couple of other Budgens retailers, they wanted to help, so we came up with the You Give We Give campaign.

"Our awesome customers really rallied behind the fundraiser. The customers of the 10 retailers and the match funding raised a staggering £97,315.

“This has been one of the most rewarding projects I have been involved with for a very long time. It puts Budgens at the heart of the community, our only interest is to help the children and families of Ukraine as much as we can”, said Dary.

The trucks of aid left the UK mid-June.

Thanks from Wendover Singers

Wendover Singers, (Wendover’s new Community Choir), would like to thank everyone who attended their first concert (No 1 Summer Concert), in June at St Mary’s Church Wendover and for helping to make it such a success.

We are now looking forward to next year’s No 2 Summer concert as well as singing carols on the Manor Waste at Christmas (more info on this soon).

Thanks also to our church shop JUST for selling tickets as well as all the Wendover Singers members and friends, who contributed to a great evening.

As you know, we had to pause the fun of admitting new members till after the concert. But the good news now is that we can welcome 20 new members so if you would like to join the Wendover Singers or be added to the waiting list, please contact us soon, on info@wendoversingers.com and take a look at our newly revamped website www.wendoversingers.com. We rehearse on Monday evenings at the John Colet School during term times.

Being a not-for-profit organisation fees are kept very low, and we offer a free ‘taster’ session on your first visit. We are fortunate to benefit from the energy and musical skills of Jill Neenan as Musical Director, Rebecca Izard as accompanist, and local music teacher Pippa Beckford who can and does provide musical cover at a moment’s notice.

If we didn’t meet you at the concert, we hope to see you in September!

Jubilee Party at the Evening WI

Wendover Evening WI celebrated the Queen's Platinum Jubilee at a garden party in a member's garden. Over 50 ladies came to the event and everyone was dressed in red, white and blue except of course the "Queen", who was Valerie Evans. Each lady brought a plate of party food and there was plenty of prosecco flowing throughout the afternoon. A good time was had by all and the WI Ladies thoroughly enjoyed themselves and were very appreciative of the effort made by the Committee.
