Happy Easter 2022

As we emerge from the strangest two years of many of our lives, we are really hoping that there will be some normality in our celebrations of Easter in 2022 - our doors were shut in 2020, some were able to go to church in 2021, but with much hesitancy so let’s hope this year we can enter into this most wonderful festival with a real sense of joy. We will do so however with the knowledge that war is raging in Ukraine with many losing their lives and homes, with fire blazing in the beautiful towns and cities of that country. We are filled with bewilderment and perhaps fear; we’re uncertain of how things will develop and looking for ways in which we can make things better for those who are fleeing. Once again human nature means that supplies have gone from many places to help those displaced and injured, donations made, and homes opened to welcome those who have lost theirs.

St George’s Day us good news stories are there alongside the coming of spring and the new life around us. Jesus came that we would have life in abundance (John 10:10) and know his love for each one of us. His death on the cross on Good Friday was totally devastating for his friends and followers and they thought that their world had come to an end but three days later he rose from the dead and saw that new life is possible. New life is possible for each of us in which we can know God’s forgiveness and joy; new life, we pray, for the country of Ukraine and peace in our world; new life that brings love and joy to each one of us. That was God’s promise when he sent his son Jesus as a baby to live among us and then allowed him to die on the cross.

Simply Walk currently provide 2 types of walk, each one accompanied by a qualified Leader and Backmarker: • Level 1: This is ideal for beginners, or those who are ‘less able’ or who need to undertake gentle exercise as part of their recovery from an illness or injury. They typically last 30 mins to 1 hour. • Level 3: This is ideal for people with some experience of walking who are looking to maintain their fitness, or are maybe thinking of attempting a walk with the Chiltern Society or Ramblers Association. They typically last from 1 - 1½ hours. The immediate need however, is to recruit more Walk Leaders so that the group can provide these walks every week. Candidates should preferably have some experience of walking and like working with people. Wendover Dementia Support Helping families through difficult times Registered Charity no. 1182184

WDS held another Family Support Group meeting in Feb where sons and daughters of our Café visitors came to work with us to support their parent, some from quite a distance away. The theme of the meeting was the importance of stimulation and meaningful activities to enhance a sense of wellbeing. Sadly many people living with dementia find they are unable to take part in their normal activities and hobbies and spend too much time doing very little. In fact many people living with dementia are capable of taking part in many of their previous activities, sports and pastimes if they are given a little help, usually in the form of tactful supervision and prompts. Many of our visitors are able to do things like play golf, go fishing or take regular country walks

once they find a companion to go with them. Others have rediscovered their enthusiasm for sewing, music, gardening or cooking, if someone is able to remind them what order to do things or how to work a machine. Others will join in new activities like dominoes, painting or jigsaws, particularly if grandchildren do this with them. These activities help people with dementia to feel more engaged with life and help them have a sense of achievement and purpose. Working with a companion fosters vital communication with others and promotes feelings of self-esteem and contentment. If you would be prepared to act as a companion to someone living with dementia, please contact us on wendoverds@gmail.com.

Saturday 4 June 2022 As you are, hopefully, aware – Wendover Celebrates is finally back this year. It has been a long wait and we are very much looking forward to the community coming together again and celebrating all things Wendover and, of course, Her Majesty the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It was ten years ago in 2012 that Wendover Celebrates in its current form began so it is the perfect opportunity for a special celebration whilst raising funds for local causes. We do hope that as many of you as possible will be coming to join us and we are currently busy making it all possible. We will, once again, be at the Chiltern Way Academy site with an afternoon and evening full of fun. We will not be having stalls this year, but you can expect a wide range of catering outlets, bars and soft drinks’ stalls to enjoy around the central arena, where the activities will take place. Then in the evening an array of local talent will entertain us on the main stage and the evening will culminate with a “quiet” firework display set to music.

But we are now looking for people to take part in other arena activities – if you are a member of a group, club or society that would like the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and skills, please get in touch and we will try to book you a slot. We look forward to welcoming you on Saturday 4 June from 2pm. Bob, Fiona & Matt Directors, Wendover Celebrates

If you have ever thought of giving bowls a go our Chairman has told me that we will have open evenings every Friday in May at six o'clock. All we ask is that you wear flat shoes; stiletto heels upset the green keeper no end. We will guide you gently through the mysteries of this simple but frustrating game. Wendover is one of the friendliest clubs and you will be made most welcome. Don Knight

Our club is tribal. It is roughly divided into two groups, namely the Dark Greens and the Light Greens. Each play other clubs in the league culminating in a needle match between each other. The Light Greens have been doing very well in matches and they showed no mercy when they took on the Dark Greens. As the indoor season draws to a close we are all looking forward to getting outside again. Sadly we will be without our Parrot House as, at present, it has a roof but no walls. They say fresh air is good for you!!

BBOWT in April

To mark our return to the great outdoors we kick off with our opening season dinner. As we missed it last year due to the wretched virus it is good to feel that things are getting back on track and we can enjoy the social side of the club again.

The event is suitable for families with children aged 3 to 11 years. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Allow 1-1.5 hours to complete. Booking recommended on www. bbowt.org.uk/events.

St David's Day Thanks

Diolch yn fawr - thank you very much - for noting on the front page of your March 2022 issue of Wendover News the fact that 1 March is St David's Day. It does surprise me, especially in the younger generation, how many are ignorant about our four saints days of the year. It was something drummed in to us back in my schools days - admittedly a long time ago - but as these saints have been revered for centuries why should children not still be told about them today? Before the Music Stopped Regular members of Wendover Choral Society's audience will be familiar with my name as the choir’s Music Director since 2000.

the Music Stopped’ looks at the life of a professional musician in London 1965-2000.

In March, 2020, three months into the celebrations for the 250th birth of Beethoven, all music performance abruptly stopped. This presented professional musicians with the unexpected and unwelcome experience of sitting at home with time to kill. In my case, I had the opportunity to finish writing a book, published at the end of 2020, that I had been working on for years. ‘Shakespeare and Emilia’ is a highly researched look at the personal life of Shakespeare and Emilia Bassano. My ancestor was nominated as the Dark Musical Lady of the Sonnets by Elizabethan historian A.L.Rowse. The continuation of lockdown for theatres and concert halls left me time to write a much lighter hearted book requiring less scholarly research. Its title, influenced by the pandemic ‘Before

The book tracks incredible international and technical developments forced on the music profession through encounters with iconic conductors such as Klemperer, Barbirolli, Abbado, Maazel, Muti, Giulini, Svetlanov and many others. The development of the early music revival is traced through concerts and recordings with David Munrow, Musica Reservata, His Majesties Sagbutts & Cornetts, John Eliot Gardiner and his Monteverdi Choir. The popular areas of music are covered in recording music for films, like ‘Oliver!’, ‘The Lion in Winter’, ‘The Meaning of Life’ and ‘Watership Down’. Entertaining anecdotes are retold in tours with the Bee Gees and Pink Floyd and how it was that I came to sing on ‘Hey Jude’ with The Beatles. Peter Bassano See Wendover Choral Society article p18.

Bees Matter Bees and other pollinating insects are essential to life as we know it, pollinating the food we need to survive and the crops that feed our livestock. However, a 33-year study undertaken by Nature Communications across the UK outlines evidence that bees and other pollinators are declining and 35 of the UK's bee species are currently under threat of extinction. If action is not taken, pollinator declines will have serious implications for biodiversity, food production, garden birds and wildlife.

already on a bee line, but we need to strengthen this pathway by planting more bee-friendly plants at regular intervals around the area. To tackle this challenge, Climate Action Wendover is excited to launch our new community project, ‘Bee Squared’ locally, alongside other groups in Hazlemere and across Buckinghamshire.

We invite you to join us in brightening up Wendover to help our bees and other pollinators which have massively declined over the past 50 years to stop this decline The main problem affecting most pollinators and help our wonderful natural friends. is the loss of suitable habitat for foraging During April 2022, we will be distributing and nesting as well as land use change. Beethoven’s Mass in C is the main focus of Wendover Choral Society’s spring concert on 21 May. Originally, to mark the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, in 2020, it was to have been part of a more ambitious all-Beethoven programme. Instead, this year, it is presented in all its emotive glory, juxtaposed with Mozart’s Symphony No. 39 and hauntingly beautiful motets in praise of the Virgin Mary from the Renaissance to more recent times. Those who attended the choir’s Christmas Concert of the cautiously selected and relatively straightforward but exquisite Requiem by Fauré would have heard the choir in good voice after a prolonged enforced silence. This spring’s more ambitious programme has been conceived for the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee year by the choir’s musical director, Peter

Youth Schools Wendover Youth Centre Update

Wendover Youth Centre’s Lead Youth Worker Pete Swinford and staff members from Premier Education are currently training to run the Milton Keynes Half Marathon on May Bank Holiday Monday 2 May. They are teaming up to raise money for the Bucks Activity Project which works with children across Buckinghamshire who do not have access to physical activity due to disability and provide short break activities for them. They plan to raise £1000 for the Bucks Activity Project to ensure that these activities can continue and young people with disabilities can access physical activity. If you would like to support this fundraising effort, please donate through the following link www. justgiving.com/fundraising/premierchilterns.

community to attend. The students provided homemade afternoon tea, cakes, sandwiches, sausage rolls and a chat amongst friends. The event was heavily supported by the community and allowed the students to build positive relationships with their customers whilst giving the students the opportunity of work experience. Nick Hall, Head of Work Ways at Chiltern Way Academy, said: "The community café allows our students to run an enterprise project and gain valuable work skills and life skills. The café provides a friendly and welcoming meeting space for the community to gather, as well as providing an opportunity for the local community to learn more about our school, what we do and get a real insight into its students. The students plan the menu and then set up and run the café largely independently. The students did a wonderful job managing our busiest event yet and the customer feedback has been great."

For more information about what the Bucks Activity Project provides please visit their website: One customer said, “We were blown away by www.actionforchildren.org.uk. ... all the effort and the manner in which the students conducted themselves. What a fabulous Chiltern Way Community Café achievement.” Students from the Chiltern Way Academy, Wendover Campus, set up a pop-up café at the The next event for the pop-up café is on Tuesday Holy Trinity Church Hall in March for the local 5 April at Holy Trinity Church Hall, Prestwood.

Station Commander Coins

Congratulations to Dr Stephanie Rutherford of the Medical Centre, and Chief Technician (Chf Tech) Edgar who each received a Station Commander’s Coin in February. Dr Rutherford, whose cheerful demeanour and professionalism instils a high level of confidence in her consultation and advice, is awarded the coin for her tenacity in patient care. One such example saw her persisting with a patient who was cleared by an A&E doctor, ensuring a further follow up that led to the patient being immediately admitted for emergency surgery. Chf Tech Edgar is the current Officer in Charge of the RAF Halton Winter Sports Club and has been organising monthly visits to the local indoor snow slope for station personnel. He also delivers the Central Fund brief for Phase 1 trainees, demonstrating his passion for sport and the positive impact it can have for the service and its people.

Local Face: Helen Biggs Helen Biggs was bred from Bucks stock and born in High Wycombe. Her father was a tenant farmer on the Hughenden Estate where life was idyllic with Disraeli's nephew as landlord and her brother's godfather. Unfortunately, on Coningsby's death, the Estate was broken up, as often happens, so the family had to move, first to Hampshire and war-time food production then postwar, aged 10, to The Hale and eventually to Boswells where they were very happy working for the Barlows. Here Helen gained a scholarship to Aylesbury Grammar, which was co-ed at the time, and she thrived. She gained experience with young children locally before starting the intensive and thorough 21 month course to become a Norland Nanny, leading to a nationally recognised qualification. There was a very expensive uniform to buy, too! As the job was on call 24/7, all students had to live in. After that, the candidate had to stay in their first job for a year and achieve a

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair

Parish Council Meeting Tuesday 5 April, 7.30pm St Anne’s Hall For all meeting and committee dates please visit our webpage www.wendover-pc.gov.uk/meetings

As I write today, the sun is shining albeit cold and breezy! However, desperate news arrives hourly from Ukraine and our thoughts are with those fleeing conflict and especially those staying to fight on. It puts our concerns very much in perspective. Some of our projects have been delayed following the storms and high winds but we are expecting the remaining trees to be planted shortly. The cycle path will be completed as far as Wharf Rd by the end of March. Some bicycle symbols have been painted along Lionel Avenue which are frequent and large. Following a conversation with the project manager, it is hoped that remaining symbols will be smaller and more spread out. As with all these projects there are rules as to what must be put in, helpful or not.

Annual Parish Meeting

Join us at 6.30pm on Thursday 28 April, in the Sports Hall at Chiltern Way Academy. Hear from our guest speaker Paul Coffey, Head of The Chiltern Way Academy. Receive an update on Wendover Parish Council’s achievements in 2021, and how the local community has been helped through the grants awarded in 2021/2022.
