Support (WDS) continues to provide support for people living locally with a diagnosis of dementia. Many of these families become isolated from the community and so their problems are often hidden. Neither the NHS nor Social Services is funded for the sort of holistic support that is needed and national charities such as Alzheimer’s Society and Dementia UK do their best but do not have sufficient resources either. Wendover Dementia Support offers different options depending on individual circumstances. These include: • a weekly Monday Club Café for enjoyable activities, live music and an opportunity to meet others in a similar position • Home Visits for individual assessment and advice •a Family Support Group where
workshops and online forums provide information, coaching and advice for sons and daughters who may not live locally. WDS are currently actively supporting approximately fifty people and their families. The charity believes in a positive approach where people living with dementia can be helped to achieve a real and sustained sense of contentment and wellbeing. Volunteers who attend the Café on Monday mornings set up the Café layout, provide drinks and cake and spend time with visitors, talking, doing activities and supporting family members. Voluntary drivers pick up Monday Club visitors and any accompanying carer from their home to bring them to and from the Café. If you would like to join in our fun on Monday mornings in the Café; or help with the transport for people please contact 01296 620342 or email wendoverds@gmail.com.

Public Rights of Way
During February we started to see more disruption to life in Wendover, with the closure of many popular “rights of way”, including closure of the Cricket Ground for dog walkers. HS2 need to maintain a path to Coombe Hill for the Ridgeway National Trail, which passes down Ellesborough Road. For anyone seeking a circular route, we were pleased to hear that EKFB are now “committed to keeping an access open for cyclists and walkers” at Small Dean Lane. They are building a new bridleway that will provide a link to Dunsmore from the southern end of the bypass. At the northern end we’ve managed to keep the path from Nash Lee Road to Wellwick open, maintaining an off-road route to Butlers Cross.
Wendover Bypass Works
The building of the concrete “batching plant” next to the Wendover Bypass is nearing completion with the four new silos being camouflaged but still visible from a distance. The plant is expected to limit the number of local “Large Goods Vehicle” concrete lorry movements to a peak of (only) 536 per day over a four-year period, compared to delivering pre-mixed concrete from elsewhere.
Other works happening
In early March Ellesborough Road will be closed to allow various HS2 works, including removal of the vegetation opposite the doomed cottages for the “green tunnel” cutting, and also for the temporary link road

Do I really need Lasting Powers of Attorney? Many people think that Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs) are only for the elderly, or where there is a risk of an illness such as dementia. However, I recommend that all of my clients consider them, whatever age.
Not just for ill health LPAs are also extremely useful if you are in good health, but are not around to deal with matters yourself. This could be due to travelling or living abroad, or being in the military and based overseas, away on exercise, or deployed on operations.
Why have LPAs? If you do not have an LPA (or Enduring Power of Attorney) and you lost mental faculties, for whatever reason - such as ill health or accident - no-one is authorised to assist you with your financial, health or welfare affairs without first applying to be appointed as a Deputy at the Court of Protection. Deputyships are costly (with ongoing annual fees), take several months and can be restrictive.
Lasting Powers of Attorney Having well planned LPAs does not affect your independence, but it does offer you, and your family, peace of mind : you authorise your chosen attorneys to look after your financial and health and welfare affairs for you if you either need, or wish, them, to do so.
This can cause significant delays and issues in helping look after not only yourself, but also your family, such as affecting access to funds, being able to sell a property, and arranging care and medical support.

It is very simple to use the bus. We have a co-ordinator called Joanne who arranges journeys – just call on 01296 317769 — and she will book in the time and date for the journey together with the return. The bus will come to your home to pick you up, find a convenient place to drop you off at your destination and then pick you up later and return you to your home. It’s a great local service but, like many local organisations after Covid, its future depends on you using it. We are now looking to increase the number of people using the car. Wendover Parish Council HS2 update Early in February, the WPC HS2 Working Group met with Rob Butler to discuss our alternative mitigation ideas. He has agreed to promote two of these, an extended cut and cover tunnel or canopy, with Andrew Stephenson (HS2 Minister) and Grant Shapps (Minster of Transport) in an effort to improve the noise outcome for residents in the Thornton Crescent / Dobbins Lane area (about 400 homes). We are hoping for a more positive response, although the mined tunnel is still the best option.

Club Corner Wendover Evening WI in 2021
What a year that was! The Wendover Evening WI Committee has taken a proactive approach to maintaining contact with their membership during the entire pandemic, including the challenges which 2021 brought. Wendover WI has remained positive and has capitalised on activities which the restrictions permitted. Being a forward-looking organisation, the group transitioned from pre-COVID face-to-face meetings to meeting on-line, fully embracing technology, including WhatsApp and Zoom which enabled: • Wendover Evening WI WhatsApp Group • Regular online contact with members • Monthly virtual speakers • Quizzes • Committee Meetings • Online Denman cookery demonstration whilst the WI members cooked. Once the Turkish cuisine was ready, members sat in front of screens with a glass of wine enjoying a virtual communal meal. Since the return of face-to-face meetings, the Club has gone from strength to strength. Read more about the activities of 2021 at https://bit. ly/34SBsUV. Wendover Evening WI Committee

35th Anniversary Celebration Scannappeal, a local charity based in Buckinghamshire, is preparing for a year of celebrations as the charity marks 35 years of fundraising. Scannappeal raises funds to purchase life-saving equipment for Buckinghamshire NHS hospitals including Stoke Mandeville, Wycombe, Amersham and community hospitals. Since it began in 1987, it has raised over £15m and funded equipment in every major department in the hospitals it supports. 35 years is a fantastic milestone to reach, but only made possible thanks to the wonderful support of the local community. Whilst they have so many milestones and memories to look back on over 35 years of fundraising success, they are asking supporters to help them create some new memories. They are now asking you to join in the celebrations.
There will be something for everyone from open gardens to music and dancing events and their newly launched Hospital Hike. Events include: • Hospital Hike – the new walking challenge uses footpaths and bridleways around Bucks to pass each hospital site Scannappeal benefits. • Secret Cinema – register now to be the first to hear about this exciting outdoor film screening and highly unique location, not to be missed! • Stretcher Challenge – going back to where it began but with an 80’s themed revival. The stretcher challenge promises to be a day to remember.
If Scannappeal has made a positive difference to you or a loved one, please consider pledging your support to help raise funds and spread the word about the impact their fundraising is having on local hospitals. Solar Streets and Earth Hour Solar Streets Update
In September 2021, Climate Action Wendover launched the Solar Streets Project and we’re delighted that 14 households have signed up to install solar panels with four installations already completed. Local Face: Toni Washington Toni Washington was born in Princess Mary Hospital, RAF Halton as most Wendover children were post World War 2 into the 1980s. The family thought themselves blessed to have Dr Riley as their beloved GP who trusted the excellent service from the last hospital where he had been stationed while serving his country. This was a special benefit of living in Wendover at the time. Toni comes from an old Buckinghamshire family. Her nanny worked for Miss Alice de Rothschild of Waddeson Manor, who died in 1922. Her grandfather came from Westcott. The married couple settled in Wendover and most of Toni's siblings, cousins and their children still live in or near Wendover to this day. Toni is therefore surrounded by people who call it "the village" and whom she has known all her life. By contrast the latest generation struggles to stay in Wendover. She remembers a High Street of specialist and necessary shops and, with her contemporaries, mourns these losses.
The times they were a-changing: starting at the new John Hampden Infants School with head teacher Mrs Hatwel, Toni then moved up to the Clock Tower School and class teacher Mrs Chamberlain, still occupying the original Victorian buildings long since turned into spacious dwellings. In 1974, Headmaster, Mr Pammenter walked the whole school to new premises which Wendover Junior School occupies to this day and has the old school gates to demonstrate the heritage. Next, a short move to John Colet School under the legendary Gordon Newman. Toni was delighted to leave school and start work as an apprentice hairdresser, starting her own mobile hairdressing business 8 years later. Toni's Dad, Eric, was chair of the Royal British Legion Club in Chiltern Road for 18 years with her Mum, Pam, serving behind the bar. Toni's cousin Julie, daughter of her Dad's twin sister Ena, is married to Barry Evans who now manages the Legion Club with his daughter Emily behind the bar!
Toni met Gary Thorne, who spent his school boy years in Weston Turville, in the early 1990s and they married in Kenya in 1995. Toni lived in married quarters in Plymouth for 6 years until Gary finally came out of the Navy, when they decided to return home to Wendover. Toni was fully supportive of the charity work Gary did, a lot based from The White Swan in Wendover High Street. It was a great shock when Gary suddenly died in February 2016. It took a while to recover from this tragedy but Toni is now very happily settled with a new partner spookily, he is also a Tony. Toni missed all her regular clients during the first lockdown but fortunately she was able to get back to doing their hair and things are now back to normal. She has known many of her clients for a long time, in the case of Margaret Ridgway over 40 years, and knows their families, too! She is very happy to be an active part of her home village. Thank you, Toni, a regular Wendover girl.

Rob Butler, MP
As we enter Spring, hopes are high that brighter days lie ahead in the fight against Covid-19. The huge success of the vaccination programme has allowed us to lift Plan B restrictions and move considerably closer to normality. Since my last column for Wendover News, I’ve had a constructive meeting with Wendover Parish Council’s HS2 Working Group about efforts to secure an enhanced package of measures to mitigate unacceptable train noise and environmental damage caused by HS2. The proposals would serve as an alternative to a mined tunnel, which the Department for Transport has rejected; I will be seeking a meeting with the HS2 Minister to discuss them as soon as possible. I received a lot of correspondence about the news that the “Helicopter Park” was dismantled without warning. The park was enjoyed by many local people and the sudden removal of play equipment understandably prompted concern and disappointment. I immediately contacted the Minister for Defence Procurement who has responsibility for defence infrastructure and both he and the Station Commander at RAF Halton have assured me they are urgently exploring ways to come up with a solution that works for everyone. Wendover is home to the Chilterns MS Centre, a charity providing services to people living with Multiple Sclerosis locally. I had a fascinating visit there, seeing first-hand some of the excellent treatments available, including hyperbaric oxygen therapy and hydrotherapy. It was also good to know local people dedicate their time as volunteers. I continue to raise the concerns of Wendover residents in Parliament: recently I’ve asked the HS2 Minister about the traffic problems caused by HS2 Ltd’s contractors’ lorries on the A413, and my office is regularly in contact with Bucks Council. I also presented a petition to the House of Commons calling for the construction of the Aylesbury link of East-West Rail—the railway we do want. As we look ahead, it’s important we don’t become complacent, despite our amazing progress against coronavirus. The best thing we can do is take advantage of the vaccination programme. I’m grateful to all Wendover residents who have been jabbed and for your help in fighting the virus, whether it be working in key roles, volunteering or home-schooling your children. I know it hasn’t been easy. Let’s keep this success story going as we build back better.

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair
This month there are a number of updates from the Parish Council. The cycle path improvements, led by Buckinghamshire Council and part funded by HS2, are well underway with the sections from Worlds End Lane to Grenville Avenue completed to the required width of 3m and finished in a lovely smooth tarmac. Other parts will be completed in April so I look forward to seeing more cyclists using it. Also moving to the next stage is the Parking Review which should be going into the Statutory Consultation in March with the view to getting works completed in the next financial year. Please do respond, especially if you are a resident on the roads specified as it is a numbers issue. At the start of February there was a meeting with Bucks Council Local Area Technician about the highways trees which should be planted by the end of February. Those adjacent to the new cycle path have been delayed until that has been finished but should be imminent. On the 20mph zone and traffic calming, conversations have revealed that to put anything in on South St would require the removal of the current parking bays, something that would not be considered at the moment. The WPC are looking to buy two speed indicator device (SID) cameras which record the speed and number of cars passing which will give data on the times when speeding occurs. These can be moved to problem areas so that issues can be monitored. Thames Valley Police have cleared an area along the bypass so that mobile speed vans can be deployed to help reduce speeding. That’s all for now, enjoy the daffodils! Sheila Bulpett
