Halton Parish Council The Clerk to Halton Parish Council is retiring, so a new Clerk is to be recruited for 12 hours per week, with one Parish Council Meeting, which is held bi-monthly. The hourly rate will depend on qualifications and experience.

Being a Clerk is an interesting, but sometimes, challenging position. ‘Clerk’ is an old term maintained by the National Association of Local Councils as a reflection of times past. The more modern title, adopted by some councils, is ‘Chief Executive or Proper Officer’. But at parish level, we defer to ‘Clerk’.

The responsibilities will include but are not limited to: • maintaining and reporting on the financial position of the Parish Council.

• attending meetings on behalf of the Parish Council • researching legal topics, and maintaining the website (with professional help) • planning • street lighting • submitting grant applications and many other duties as they arise.

Significant building works happening all around

EKFB are making progress with construction works in the Nash Lee Road area close to the Chiltern Brewery. Two temporary roads are being built from the roundabout at the North end of the Bypass to allow the excavation of the cutting through Nash Lee Road at the junction with Nash Lee Lane.

Public Right of Way open between Nash Lee Lane and Wellwick Farm which should allow walkers on the “Aylesbury Ring” to avoid needing to use main roads.

Further North the “ELL/20” path between the Triangle Business Park and Terrick is now closed for three years to allow construction of the line. Construction of culverts that allow massive dump trucks on the “haul road” to cross Stoke Brook is happening now.

Demise of Ellesborough Cottages

We understand that demolition of the empty cottages in Ellesborough Road has been delayed by Natural England until the end of March due to the presence of hibernating bats. Resulting spoil from the demolition should be removed for use in the site of the new access road that has been established to the bypass in the field behind the (now closed) Cricket Ground.

Small Dean Piling

HS2 started to “sheet pile” retaining walls next to the Chiltern Line at Small Dean where the viaduct will cross over. These walls will protect the railway line from significant excavation needed beside the line to form the foundations for the Small Dean Viaduct piers. Having been delayed on safety grounds due to the protestors in the tunnels in the vicinity, this work will now continue into January with more weekend Chiltern Line closures.

We remain very concerned that the few PROWs which remain open are under threat of closure for years without offroad diversion routes. We are also very concerned that these highly popular PROWs will never re-open, and this cannot be allowed to happen. You can see the map of where these are on our website www. whs2.org.

A New Year Resolution?

New Year is traditionally the time for new resolutions. This might include exercising more, or eating or drinking less, but how about including ensuring that your legal affairs, such as your Wills, are in order as well? It may not sound as exciting, but it could make a significant difference to both you and your family and friends.

Peace of mind It is extremely important to have a well-planned and up-to-date Will. This allows you to specify who benefits from your assets and who looks after your affairs, including guardians for any young children you may have. This can provide peace of mind for both you and those left behind.

Protection A Will can help reduce inheritance tax and provide protection. This could be for possibly vulnerable and / or ill beneficiaries, those going through relationship breakdown, and protecting your assets in relation to care fees.

It also avoids intestacy, where the law dictates

what happens to your assets if you do not have a Will.

Review Reviewing Wills regularly is also important to ensure they still meet your wishes. I recommend at least every 3-5 years, or sooner if there is a change in circumstances or legislation. As Wills are automatically cancelled on marriage, this is another important time to review them.

Lasting Powers of Attorney I also recommend preparing Lasting Powers of Attorney (LPAs). These authorise your chosen attorneys to look after your financial and health and welfare affairs for you if you were no longer able to do so yourself, for whatever reason.

Wendover Dementia Support Helping families through difficult times Registered Charity no. 1182184

Wendover Dementia Support has been using the OMI ‘magic table’ since the Monday club reopened earlier this year. It has been enjoyed immensely by all the visitors and has provided much shared laughter, communication, social involvement and stimulation during the sessions.

The Tovertafel OMI projector has been bought by Wendover Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA), who obtained funding from Wendover Parish Council and LHC Community Benefit Fund to buy and use the projector in the local community. The interactive technology, known as the Magic Table (the English translation of the brand name), is to be lent to various local organisations to use.

These could include people with dementia and their carers, day centres, special needs settings, schools, and other community groups to help enhance their learning and quality of life.

Wendover Parish Council HS2 update As you will see in other pages on HS2, work is now continuing apace. The design and Schedule 17(3) application is in for Stoke Mandeville but contains no reference to any water diverted from the Wendover/Coombe Hill aquifer so wellies and boats may be needed downstream. There is a proposal to have a “microbore” tunnel beside the HS2 line to carry the water – 2.4m wide and 1.6km long! Not so micro! Could almost put a train down it……!

Club Corner Aston Wine Club

Aston Wine Club has been established for more than 25 years, and is probably one of the best local wine clubs in the country! Our aim is to have fun socializing with friends and enjoy tasting wine from all over the world. It provides the opportunity to taste unusual & sometimes very expensive wines outside of the wines that we might normally imbibe. With old and new world, still & sparkling, red, white, rosé and orange, we have a really varied & interesting tasting programme.

We meet on the third Friday evening of most months in Buckland Village Hall, where you will be welcomed with a glass of wine in advance of a relaxed, fun and informative evening, led by a wine merchant, wine writer, wine educator or other expert. We sample eight wines with a break for a light supper after the first four, then on to the last four wines. All this for a whopping £15 for members and £20 for guests!

We like to keep things lively and over the years we have enjoyed trips to Waddesdon Manor for private tastings in their cellars, fish n’ chip & champagne evenings, members’ nights where members introduce their personal favourite, presentations focusing on certain countries or regions within a country, and special Christmas events with a meal.

On 11 December we had the needle match between the Ladies and Gentlemen. Teams of three did battle in a series of short games. In the morning session the men romped away, then the ladies came back at them in the afternoon, but not enough to win overall. A super day made more enjoyable by an all day buffet organised by one of our ladies, Sharon Razey. There was so much food that I suspect that it was a ploy to get the men to overeat and relax too much after lunch. In fact there was so much food that a meal, that was planned at the end of play, was cancelled to give a chance to make inroads into the excess.

closed whilst these works take place. We will be working 24 hours a day from midnight on Saturday 25 December until 4.00am Wednesday 29 December. Work will then resume, 24 hours a day from 1.00am on Saturday 1 January to 1.00am Monday 3 January. We will aim to get the work completed as quickly as possible. Local News Movember Thanks

I would like to use Wendover News to thank the citizens of Wendover who supported my Movember charity appeal, particularly the regulars at the King and Queen pub. At the beginning of the month I was dared to grow a moustache and ask donors to support my efforts. Well, the moustache is now established and opinion is split as to whether it makes me even more handsome, or makes me look like a young Father Christmas.

Green Homes Grant

Residents are being encouraged to check if they are eligible for a new scheme to improve the warmth of their homes, lower carbon emissions, and save money on fuel bills this winter. Under the Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery scheme, delivered by Warmworks on behalf of Buckinghamshire Council and through funding from the UK Government, householders can apply to receive improvements to their home.

The scheme offers a wide range of insulation measures and renewable heating technologies which are designed to support homes to reduce their impact on the environment, including air source, ground source, and hybrid heat pumps.

The Green Homes Grant Local Authority Delivery scheme is open to homeowners, private tenants and people in social rented accommodation, where the home has a low energy rating and a low annual income.

Students planting 400 trees

CWA have been given 400 trees by The Woodland Trust that the students are planting whilst participating in "The Big Climate Fightback" to help get 50 million more trees in the ground across the UK. The Big Climate Fightback aims to rally the nation to get behind tree planting by finding those underused areas in our communities that could accommodate more trees and make a difference in the fight against climate change and provide havens for wildlife.

With the environmental impact of HS2 in the local area, we thought it would be a great idea to get involved and plant more trees on the Wendover grounds.

One month ago our Thursday Youth Group set themselves the challenge to run/walk 60km in the month of November to raise money for Movember UK. Every member absolutely smashed this target and completed over 100km. They raised a total of £236.73. Special note to Zac, our winner, who did 276.66km of activity, but we are so proud of everybody who took part! Thank you so much to everybody who donated. News from Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity Local charity thanks their volunteers

Volunteers are key to Florence Nightingale Hospice Charity, in helping the Charity raise funds through their network of shops and at their events, as well as supporting the work of the Hospice as Hospice Volunteers, Volunteer Drivers and Bereavement Support Listeners.

Vicky Harman, Volunteer Engagement Manager at the Charity says, “All our volunteers make an impact, and we are very grateful to them for their role in our recovery from Covid in reopening the shops, supporting events and opening up the services at the Hospice.”

Volunteering offers an opportunity to gain new skills, meet new people, experience something different, as well as giving back to your local community. It can also help you develop your career by gaining valuable experience, build confidence and resilience and connect with other people.

We are looking for new volunteers to join our happy team of drivers to take patients of Wendover Health Centre to medical appointments If you enjoy driving and would like to support those who are unable to make their own way to hospital or the surgery we need you!

Our bookings are made over the telephone between 1 and 3pm each weekday, you choose when you are available and how far you are willing to travel. New Plan launched to address local Wildlife decline: Can you become wilder?

A new Biodiversity Action Plan has been launched to urge action for wildlife across Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes.

Published by the Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes Natural Environment Partnership (the “NEP”), the Plan, “Forward to 2030”, sets out important ambitions and targets for nature in our area to 2030.

Nature and wildlife are vital to life, our economies and communities. As well as being important homes for wildlife, we all rely on nature for food, clean air and water, to help prevent flooding, for natural resources and for physical and mental health and wellbeing.

"We all have a role to play in recognising the importance of the nature around us, and in doing our bit to protect and conserve it, to create and improve wilder areas, connect them up and take care of them into the long term to make sure nature continues to provide us all with many the benefits that we rely on.

But whilst Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes may appear green and pleasant, globally we are in the middle of a mass extinction event and there are multiple threats to nature at all scales. Remembrance Parade & Poppy Appeal 2021 A huge thank you to the people of Wendover for an amazing turnout for the annual Remembrance Parade in November. I inherited the role of Parade organiser after my dad John Thompson passed away in December 2019. Covid last year stopped our full parade in 2020 but with help we managed to pay our respects in a socially distanced minimal way. So for 2021 to be my first full parade I am blown away by the turnout and help from everyone involved to make it happen.

My thankyous start with Sally and Remco from the two churches taking the service. A brilliant turnout from all the organisations.

The wreath-layers all did an amazing job with our local MP Rob Butler taking his turn.

RAF Halton Spring Nursery, RAF Halton, takes part in The Queen’s Green Canopy Nursery Manager Madieke says: “On Thursday 18 November our nursery took part in the The Queen’s Green Canopy (QGC), which is a unique tree planting initiative created to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022 and invites people from across the United Kingdom to ‘Plant a Tree for the Jubilee.'”

Congratulations to Corporal (Cpl) Taylor who was the recipient of a prestigious Station Commander’s Coin in December.

Taking on the position of Chair of the Junior Ranks Council 6 months ago, Cpl Taylor has been a breath of fresh air; enthusiastic, articulate and determined to do good. One of the Station Commander’s top priorities for 2021 was to enhance the communications across the Station - particularly for the Junior Ranks - and Cpl Taylor has led the way by creating an MS Teams forum to enable this. It has proved beneficial for not just the Junior Ranks Council but also the Junior Ranks Welfare Committee. At meetings with the Station Commander and Station Warrant Officer she has excelled as Chair, capably providing clear and concise direction and updates.

A truly well-deserved award – well done!

Local Face: Peter Dorling Peter Dorling fell in love with "the Wireless" as a child and became an avid listener to every genre of radio programme.

From an early age he set his sights on joining the BBC and after his National Service in the Royal Corps of Signals at the age of 20, two unsuccessful attempts didn’t deter him from trying a third time. He finally joined the ranks of the BBC as a junior technician in 1956.

This was the start of a 40-year career with the BBC, where he became a familiar face reading the TV news.

Over the next ten years, they did some 50 cruises taking them all over the world, visiting 80 countries. Peter gave 200 expertly-produced, illustrated lectures on the history of the BBC, and other newsworthy topics of the time, and became something of a celebrity on board.

Peter became one of the youngest-ever radio announcers, working alongside famous wartime news readers, and still has a charming, sonorous BBC voice. While doing sound effects, like rattling the teacups on Mrs Dale’s Diary, he was cautioned by his boss that his career wouldn’t blossom unless he moved into television before he was 30.

Over the next 25 years he took on various roles in Television News, as producer, reporter, interviewer, film director and programme anchor man. Peter’s face became well known reading the news and covering politics. He even had an office in the Houses of Parliament, where he identified newsworthy stories from Parliamentary debates. He covered five general elections, presenting BBC2's coverage each night of the campaigns. Then came the Falklands War and the two Gulf Wars which he helped cover from the London newsroom.

Peter’s experience was so wide that he was prized as a trainer within the BBC, shaping journalists into the very best, for which the BBC was famed. As he was about to retire, he was spotted by representatives of the Singapore Television Station, a government institution, who wanted advice on how to present its policies to viewers, in a way which didn’t seem like government propaganda.

For nine years in the 1990s, in three-month stints, Peter, accompanied by his wife Isobel, trained Singaporean journalists in the art of balanced TV news reporting. It went down very well and some of his trainees are now top Government Ministers. He remembers his time in Singapore fondly, as a place of garishly colourful noisy markets, spicy food and the most efficient transport system.

Isobel arranged trips for them both, all over South East Asia, which became a precursor to the next adventure in their lives. Peter was invited to take up guest lecturing on cruise

They were rarely at their home in Gerrards Cross, but Peter found time to sing bass with the choir of St James' Church, as well as being relief organist at nearby Fulmer Church. He was also, for many years, a member of the local South Bucks Choral Society. Meanwhile, Isobel taught maths at St Mary’s School in Gerrards Cross and was finance governor at the village school in Fulmer for 40 years.

One of their two daughters lived in Wendover with her family and had always been singing Wendover’s praises. So, when the time came to downsize, it was a natural destination to move to Wendover.

Unfortunately, Isobel became ill shortly after their move, and passed away before making what would certainly have been her usual valued contribution to the local community.

Nevertheless, Peter says he very much enjoys living in Wendover, with its excellent facilities and family within walking distance.

Now aged 87, he still frequents local cafés and restaurants, so if you recognise him, do say hello.

Wendover Parish Council Matters Arising View from the Chair

In the words of a famous song “Another year over and what have we done….” Much confusion with Covid and restrictions! Not as good as the original song lyrics but there we go. Since my last View, we have managed the scheduled program of events with the Old Nickers winning the final of the Parish Quiz at the Bowls Club. It was a night of very challenging questions from quiz master Alan Myers and closely fought semi-finals. My thanks to all 16 teams and their supporters, Alan, and Jane Ellis who organised the event for the Council.

Following a consultation with the community, the Council has adopted a new Vision for Wendover and a Community Action Plan, to bring the vision to life. More details can be found here: www. wendover-pc.gov.uk/vision.

Another highlight of the festive period was the annual Christmas Event. Again, my thanks to WPC staff and Councillors, the crowd, stall holders and shop keepers who make this a really lovely occasion.

The Council are investigating the use of the Manor Waste within its Charter. As part of this we are running a consultation until Monday 10 January, both on WPC Facebook and website, so please comment. As the New Year starts, there are some initiatives which should be completed by spring. Bucks Council will be installing a CCTV camera on the junction of Church Lane and South St to monitor HS2 HGV traffic, due in January. The Wendover and Villages Community Board have pledged monies towards the proposed new Skate Park and the NHS health check bus is due to visit Wendover on 6 January 2022 in the library (see WPC website).
