To mark the death of His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh on Friday 9 April 2021, several flags in Wendover were flown at half mast until his funeral planned for Saturday April 17. The Clock Tower flag was decorated with a black ribbon. Wendover News went to press on Wednesday 14 April.

May Elections

On Thursday 6 May elections will be held for the new Buckinghamshire Council and Buckinghamshire Parish Councils. These were postponed from 2020.

The Bedford Competition

(International Short Story & Poetry Awards) Wendover resident and local writer Isabella Mead has won first prize of £500 in the 2020 Bedford International Poetry Competition, judged by poet Lesley Saunders, for her poem ‘Toy Mouse, Discovered at Vindolanda Roman Fort, May 2020.’

Isabella wrote the poem while on furlough during the first lockdown, coming across an unusual article in the Guardian that was light relief from news of the coronavirus. Curatorial staff at Vindolanda Roman Fort were using their spare time to go through several bags of ancient leather. They discovered amongst them a shape that looked very much like a mouse: perhaps it was a toy. You can read more about the mouse here: www.vindolanda. com/news/roman-leather-mouse-discovered.

The judge Lesley Saunders said about the poem: "This poem captivated me the first time I came across it reading through a whole pile of entries, and I marked it out as one to come back to. But there’s always a possibility that a poem that makes a strong first impression

won’t sustain your interest when you come back to it. So I was so pleased to find that I appreciated it more each time I read it. The evocation of other lives and times on the island of Britain is done with an economy of detail, and the ancient superstition to ward off the plague is neatly laid without comment next to the modern archaeologist’s ‘wishful thinking.’ The relationship between past and present is given a very contemporary nuance, without being heavy-handed; the toy mouse is the perfect vehicle for this, as well as being a complete delight in itself."

Share your garden and help raise money Could your garden raise vital funds for Rennie Grove and spread some joy?

An enormous amount of hard work and love goes into creating and maintaining beautiful gardens all year round, and Rennie Grove is offering local Buckinghamshire and Hertfordshire residents the opportunity to showcase the result of their labours as part of its Open Gardens Scheme – running from May to September 2021.

Now, more than ever, Rennie Grove is working hard to organise events to fund care for local patients with a life-limiting illness.

The Open Gardens Scheme is a great way of encouraging the local community to take part and have fun at the same time.

Louise Hewitt, Senior Community Fundraiser, explained: “We know that many people have spent hours in their gardens this past year and that there are many beautiful sights hidden behind our garden gates. We also know from previous years that people

or would like to hold a simple driveway plant sale instead then we’d be delighted to hear from you.”

Gardeners also have the opportunity to club together with neighbours and provide a series of gardens to view. By collecting a small entry fee to view individual or groups of gardens, local people will be able to help raise funds to support others in need in their local communities. In previous years, gardeners love to visit local gardens to admire and be have also held plant sales, raffles and sold tea inspired, so we’re encouraging the owners of and cake to boost their fundraising. these hidden gems to open up their gardens for others to enjoy. HS2 update This Month

Our recent effort has revolved around Buckinghamshire Council (BC) and the Schedule 17 (S17) planning notice for the Wendover Dean flyover. The WG are working alongside WHS2 to ensure that this first application is dealt with correctly. There is still confusion about the WPC’s role in the S17 process. To ensure that we continue to influence the process we are using the official Planning Portal and working to support BC officers in their efforts. Because of the Hybrid Bill process that the High Speed Rail Act was formed by, planning permission is deemed to be granted by Parliament. BC are the planning authority but, because of this deemed consent, can only refuse applications on distinct local issues; issues that show a failure to keep promises made in the Act. So, considering all of this, that BC has refused to accept the Lorry Movement element of the Local Transport Management Plan and has asked for more time and more information to clarify elements of the S17 shows that all

of the community stakeholders are holding I’ve also asked the BC assurance team to push HS2 to account. for answers on the two lorries questions.

Wendover Dean Viaduct A Blot On Our Landscape What’s the status?

At press date, a Schedule 17(3) application (reference 21/00860/HS2) has been made

by HS2 Ltd to Buckinghamshire Council for the Wendover Dean Viaduct, who have until 23 April to respond to it.

Unlike a normal planning application, they cannot object to it. However, the council review the submission and request changes where the local environment, flood risk and amenities (including highways) are affected, where reasonably practicable. They also check that Undertakings and Assurances in the act have been met.

Club Corner Into summer with the Wildlife Trust

College Lake Reserve and Visitor Centre will be open from 10am Tuesday through Sunday moving to seven day opening from June. The cafe will be serving a new and exciting menu to enjoy in our refurbished outside seating area.

The gift shop will be selling many new products including a local range from the Chiltern Brewery while secondhand books and trampers will also be available. We are very keen to hear from old and new volunteers to help us run efficiently and there are lots of roles available. We expect the car park to be busy so please be patient and consider making a donation to Trust funds.

Events for adults and children will be posted online at bbowt.org.uk as they become possible but all local nature reserves are freely available now so do go out and enjoy them at their best at any time.

Wendover Evening WI

Wendover Evening WI meets on the second Tuesday of each month. At the moment our meetings are via Zoom but we are hoping to restart at our usual venue of St Anne’s Hall once lockdown restrictions have been lifted. We have a very interesting and varied programme of speakers booked for the next few months.

Wendover Bowls Club

At last we will soon be allowed back on to our green.

Even though there will be restrictions with the use of the clubhouse and numbers it is a huge step.

We did manage a few days play last summer before lockdown but most of us have not picked up a bowl for almost a year.

The absent class: Fertility Yoga We are blessed in this area to have a number of incredibly knowledgeable and specialist practitioners, who work alongside the excellent services provided by the NHS, to support expectant and new parents. Some of these services are free; others require payment – they include antenatal classes, pregnancy yoga, hypnobirthing, specialist physiotherapists or even simply, but crucially, the opportunity to build relationships and share experiences with other expectant parents through 14

What happens before this point?

The journey of parenthood certainly doesn’t necessarily begin the moment you see the positive reading on the pregnancy test; for some there are long, unrelenting emotionally charged months and years to even reach that point, and the level of support at this time is not so abundant. Yoga with Alice D, based in Wendover, hopes to address this imbalance in our area.

Known for her specialisms in yoga for pregnancy, the postnatal period, and women’s cycles, Alice has used lockdown to additionally train and qualify in Fertility Yoga (85 hours CPD).

How is yoga helpful for fertility? Yoga reduces levels of stress hormones in the blood stream which means the body can focus on reproductive hormones instead.

It stimulates the heart and pelvic areas, encouraging blood flow to the reproductive organs. It supports and helps to regulate the endocrine system which helps balance the hormones – very important for fertility.

Alice writes “My wish is to support women during this stage of their lives as much as I can. I can’t make any promises unfortunately, but I can certainly guide women in the right direction. This may be on a physical level by helping them to elicit the relaxation, as opposed to a stress, response in their bodies. It may be more about positive thinking, focusing on the power of the subconscious, positive affirmations and encouraging a belief in their fertility. It might be about considering a more holistic approach to fertility, opening discussions they may have overlooked, such as the importance of sleep and nutrition; or focusing on the fundamentals of acceptance

and mindful self-compassion. There are so many dynamics in play here, but hopefully amongst all these areas, there may be something that makes a difference, or if nothing else, helps improve the lifestyle and resilience of those who attend these classes.”

Who is the class suitable for? The yoga classes are suitable for all stages of the menstrual cycle including the two weeks wait; and the classes include slight adjustments according to where you are in your cycle and if you are menstruating. Fertilityfocused yoga is extremely complementary to Assisted Reproductive Technology, with the exception of the 48-hours post-retrieval and postimplantation period.

What happens during a typical class?

Each week has a different focus or theme; this is discussed and attendees are given the chance to connect with one another (if they wish – confidentiality and personal preference on the way women wish to interact within class is respected). We work through specific breathing techniques for fertility; meditations; chosen fertility asanas (postures); and relaxations.

Yoga with Alice D is based in Buckinghamshire, Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire, offering pregnancy, postnatal and women’s classes. Fertility Yoga launches in June in Aston Clinton. Alice is Mummy to Millie (4), Jasper (2) and Laurie (born in February).

An Aylesbury Vale resident for 35 years, Richard moved to the area to work as a Prosecutor for Thames Valley Police, based in Wendover. Elected to AVDC in 2017 Richard is now Chairman of the Audit & Governance Committee, and sits on Infrastructure and Planning Committees where he promotes energy efficiency.

On Buckinghamshire Council he has been working to mitigate HS2. He is a member of the Chilterns Conservation Board as protecting our AONB from both HS2 and overdevelopment are hugely important to Richard.

The price of lockdowns is too high with soaring mental health problems, beyond damaging effects of social isolation, closure of businesses, missed cancer diagnoses, and restrictions in essential healthcare to name a few. Every worker is a key worker and we should all enjoy the same rights to earn a living and send our children to school. I am unaware of illness/death rates of key worker children throughout the lockdowns. My child has been forced to spend months in isolation from her peers. Together we can ensure the vulnerable are safe while the rest of us get back to living normally.

Local News Wendover Water Changing Club

Over the last year I have stepped up my aquarium hobby. As we are looking forward to being able to travel on vacation again, I realize that although I have solutions for the dog, the cats, and the plants, I do not know someone who feels comfortable doing the weekly water changes and watch over the aquarium.

This year Walkers are again being asked to walk a minimum of 5 miles, wherever they want, starting at 5am on Saturday 10 July. Thanks must also go to Rumseys for their outdoor table service (and to the Parish Council for letting them). We were among those who were rather sad when the Manor Waste was resurfaced but hasn’t it proved its worth. Unlike so many places, Wendover is rarely deserted and it’s been so good to see people out and about (and invariably with a cup in their hands!), proving to all that Wendover might be sleeping; it is certainly not dead. Who knows how things are going to pan out over the next few weeks and months, but we are so lucky to live here.

St Anne’s and Wendover Free Church displayed a Lenten Giving Tree for the first time. This was to collect Easter Eggs, chocolates, cakes and biscuits to give as Easter Treats to staff and residents of local Houses: Abbeyfield House, Cherry Tree House in Wendover and Fremantle Court in Stoke Mandeville. They were received with relish. Some local individuals were equally delighted to be recipients. Other items were collected for the Aylesbury Women’s Aid. £2.5m for on-demand rural bus services in South East Projects to improve bus services in rural areas of the South East are set to benefit from £2.5 million, Transport Minister Baroness Vere announced in March, as the Government unveiled the most ambitious shake-up of the bus sector in a generation.

The investment is part of a £20 million fund to support innovative on-demand services, such as minibuses that can be booked via an app, which are able to get closer to where people live in rural and suburban areas, and at a time convenient for them.

The changes include: • Simpler bus fares with daily price caps, so people can use the bus as many times a day as they need without facing mounting costs • more services in the evenings and at the weekends • integrated services and ticketing across all transport modes, so people can easily move from bus to train • all buses to accept contactless payments

The funding being allocated will enable local authorities to trial innovative projects in rural and suburban areas, where traditional timetabled services often aren’t practical.

Buckinghamshire Council will receive £1,114,000 for a project that will see six 11-seater vehicles with Wi-Fi access and full wheelchair accessibility rolled out to boost accessibility to villages surrounding Aylesbury. The scheme, which would enable passengers to book through a mobile app, would improve the links to villages such as Weedon and Hartwell where there are currently only one or two bus services an hour, and Halton, where there are no bus routes serving the village. It will also improve connections to Stoke Mandeville Hospital.

Transport Minister, Baroness Vere, said: “Buses are the life-blood of our communities.

In January 2021, I saw an Instagram post about a charity sponsored run for MIND, 27 miles in 27 days. This amazing charity provides advice, help and support for anyone experiencing mental health problems.

Today, five times as many students experience mental health issues as ten years ago. Although I enjoy team sports, I am not a runner, but was interested to take up this challenge and push myself to raise money for a great cause.

New CEO at Chilterns MS Chilterns MS Centre appoints Andy Graham as new Chief Executive Officer Andy Graham has been appointed to the position of Chief Executive Officer at the Chilterns MS Centre, an independent charity that offers therapy and support for people living with multiple sclerosis. The charity has been without a CEO for over a year, and Andy was previously the organisation’s Chief Operating Officer.

“My aim is simple – to help build a sustainable organisation that has the most positive impact on those we care for.”

Speaking about his new role he comments, “I feel honoured to accept the position of CEO for the Chilterns MS Centre. My role as COO was more focused on directing the inner workings of the charity, and as COVID become our centre of attention, to ensure we were best placed to face the future. Our next phase, securing the long-term future of the charity, now needs our leadership to be focused outwards.

The position forms part of a period of change for the charity, which is also recruiting for a new Head of Fundraising, and has recently restructured its clinical team to reflect a more integrated approach to supporting and treating people with the incurable neurological condition.

Cycling for the Pace Centre Guy Stapleford cycled 140km every day in the month of March, alongside his full-time job.

Guy, who works for a local Housing Association, covered 4,200km over the course of the month to raise awareness and money for the Pace Centre in Aylesbury.

It’s a simple challenge that Guy hopes will celebrate the 140 children born every month with cerebal palsy in the UK. The rules are simple in that he must ride the full 140km every day, nothing can be rolled over, either on the road or on the turbo trainer.

Finding the time to cycle is often the biggest part of the challenge, “I’m trying to keep to a routine, getting up a 4am to start riding at 4.30am and riding 60-80km before work.”

Whatever distance is left over, he has to

complete after he finishes work in the evening. With the COVID restrictions and early starts this means Guy finds himself riding almost all of the distance on his own.

Pace is a school in Aylesbury, Bucks, dedicated to transforming the lives of children up to the age of 18 with motor disorders such as cerebral palsy. We opened the doors to our Wendover office on Tuesday 6 April and we are looking forward to serving and becoming part of the great community here.

Funeral director Jason Brown and his wife Ana have been looking to have a branch of J Brown Funeral Services in Wendover for many years, and just jumped at the chance when 23 High Street was offered.

We received quite a few entries to our Easter Art competition from Wendover and many local people bought raffle tickets which helped us raise £600 towards the development of the new Children’s Memorial Gardens in Longwick. We also held a Halloween trail and a Christmas trail in Amersham last year which

Due to the great success of two foodbank donation weeks last year during the pandemic, the Youth Centre, in partnership with St Mary’s, Wendover Free Church, Wendover Parish Council and the Wendover Foodbank ran its third Foodbank Donation Week in the last week of March.

During the week the young people came and helped with the cleaning and packing of the food into crates. It was great to see these young people put their time into coming up with ways to be a part of the week and help their community. A special mention to Eva and Mabel who worked together to encourage their street to donate food. They collected over two big trolleys of food from their street and also assisted with the cleaning/packing of the food! A big thank you to them and everyone else for their fantastic efforts throughout the week.

Because of the effects of the pandemic and lockdowns, the number of people accessing the foodbank continues to increase in our local area. Local Face: Miles Lewis Although born in Oxford, Miles spent his childhood in Wendover. He has wonderful memories being raised in one of the famous thatched Anne Boleyn Cottages.

Having Wendy Lewis, a well known author and illustrator as his mother, Miles has been raised with a deep-rooted sense of creativity and originality.

He is truly thankful to have lived in Wendover, a special village that has given him strong connections with the community. Leaving the area for several years to study at Oxford Brookes University, Miles gained his degree in Geography and Ecology. When job roles in this field seemed too few and far between, he returned to Wendover not knowing which professional path to choose. Eventually, he did what many students do, and found work as a labourer with local building firm, NK Building and Renovations.

He really liked the way they worked and

feels he gained a thorough training as a carpenter and foreman for which he is very grateful. After 7 happy years, in common with others, the pandemic took Miles’ work in a new direction. Embracing the new challenge, Miles founded M Lewis Project

him immense satisfaction and sees this as an area soon to be in high demand as people become increasingly environmentally aware. His business philosophy is to be a hands on boss (not “off the tools”) and take care of the needs of his staff as well as his clients and their neighbours in the community. Wildflowers in Witchell Meadow The grounds team have laid some wildflower seeds to create a small wildflower meadow.

The wildflower seeds contain annuals and perennials so we will see some colour within the first year, with the perennials providing more colour from year two onwards. The seeds have been specially selected to increase floral diversity and attract pollinators. If this wildflower meadow is successful, the Council will revisit the idea to add more wildflower meadows along verges in the Village which requires a cultivation licence from Buckinghamshire Council.

Ashbrook Path The Council recently installed a new path at Ashbrook open space. The path starts at the entry gate and runs along the length of the playpark, down to the exercise equipment.

This should make access to the playpark much easier for wheelchairs and buggies.

Wendover Rocks Wendover Produce Market The Wendover Rocks have finally got their Saturday 15 May, 9am to 1pm forever home! Did you decorate a rock to Manor Waste show your support for the NHS and key workers during the pandemic? They now have a permanent home at Ashbrook Park, Parish Council Grants 2021/22 near the bicycle racks.

The WPC Finance Committee recently convened to hear the recommendations from the Grants Sub-Committee.
