The fields of Hartley Farm in Rocky Lane are now fenced off by HS2 HS2 cometh Thank you WPC We’ve known about the HS2 project since 2010, and in recent weeks we’ve seen a lot of activity in the fields around Wendover, not to mention a hole in the ground at Great Missenden. Wendover News has tried to keep the public informed of the proposals and has published a regular HS2 column, sometimes two, since April 2010. In this edition, Effage Kier JV, engineers for this part of the route have sent us some information about current engineering works see page 14. Wendover HS2 contribute on page 20, The regular column is on page 23.

Wendover News was greatly honoured at the Wendover Annual Parish Meeting on Wednesday 10 April.

Even before the end of the war there were discussions in towns and villages throughout the country concerning the possible form of a war memorial. These memorials demonstrated a public and national commitment never to forget those who had given their lives. They were a powerful and unifying force that brought together both the survivors and the dead and they took many forms - stone crosses or monuments, bronze or marble figures, stained glass windows, lych-gates, hospitals, gardens, village halls and clock towers. Most were unveiled in the 1920s, but the planning, often not without heated discussion, took place in 1919.

In May 1919 the Ellesborough Parish Council discussed plans for the village war memorial. Miss Faith Moore of Ellesborough Manor proposed to give a field as a site for a village recreation ground and to have a permanent memorial erected there. Lord Lee said he would assist in the work required.

The plans for a memorial in Wendover caused much ill-feeling between the Lord of the Manor and the Parish Council and it wasn’t until 1922 that the War Memorial was finally dedicated. In November 1921 Mr Wood at a Parish Council Meeting said that on his recent holiday he had travelled through many villages large and small and they had all had their memorials and it was shameful that Wendover still hadn’t got theirs. He said the residents of the village blamed the Parish Council for the problem but that the memorial had been taken out of their hands by the Lord of the Manor (Mr E P Smith).

A local resident writing under the pseudonym “SEMPER VIGILANS” [Ever Watchful] wrote to The Bucks Herald dated November 26th 1921: “It is pleasing to read the Council have given the reason of the apathy for the erection of the war memorial. The statement of the Councillors that the hold-up was a scandal and a disgrace is quite refreshing for the old world town. It is also stated the Council are blameless. They in committee have done their utmost, and I am given to understand, although plans had been accepted and approved by them, the Lord of the Manor (who does not live therein) did not approve, not with-standing the desire of the people, committee, and subscribers. ‘I will have my own architect’ so ‘tis stated he re-marked two years since.

Naturally the representatives of the people were crushed, and I suppose, the plans are so elaborate that it will be some time yet before they are executed. There is mention of a site for the war memorial after many schemes and counter schemes, and I gather the Lord of the Manor has decided to allocate a small portion of ground outside a chemist’s shop, and by virtue of this deed of goodness he has apparently taken over the war memorial scheme, lock stock and barrel. Many years since there lived a Lord of the Manor at Wendover who loved to live among the people, and the people loved him. So great was his love for the people that he presented the town with a building, and called it a Literary Institute.”

He said that the Council had approved the design and proposed site opposite the Old Monastery and that the appeal should be left in his hands. As a result he had personally sent a copy of the appeal with a picture of the proposed cross to every householder in Wendover. The design for the memorial, he said “is the result of serious consideration by two very experienced architects, Mr A A Hudson, of Bacome, and Mr Gerald Cogswell. Mr Cogswell went to Wendover and carefully studied characteristics (red tiles) and made the design specially to suit them and its old world associations, a reproduction of the village cross of centuries ago. The opinion is that the cross, if erected, will be second to none with regard to beauty, and the site chosen is the most suitable. I am sending a copy of this letter to the press.

Cashpoints in Wendover On Tuesday 26 March Budgens alerted Wendover News to a notification from their ATM supplier. It was immediately uploaded to the Wendover News social media feeds on Facebook and Twitter and our website.

The ATM at the BP garage had already started charging about two weeks beforehand. The £50 free cash back in Budgens 'requires no minimum purchase'. Counter withdrawals at Wendover Post Office are also free.

Amidst the springtime felicitations of lambs, calves, blossoms and bluebells, although we gaze across the valley at a broadening landscape excavation scar, we’re definitely excited that Road Farm Countryways CIC now has a wonderful toilet block with proper disabled facilities and excellent workshop room for woodcraft.

This is something massively positive to enrich others which we would certainly not have without significant help from the HS2 Community Environment Fund, following the grant awarded last year. Previous Wendover News articles have detailed steady fundraising support from others over four years, for which we’re hugely grateful.

Your article states: 'the landlord had new plans for the building and would not be budged on this decision' when in fact the landlord had spent almost three years in negotiations with the tenant(s) for their purchase of the property, known as The Raj, but ultimately the landlord, with much sadness, had no option but to bring this long drawn out 'saga' to a conclusion and move forward to market the property, known as 23/25 Aylesbury Road.

Eiffage Kier’s works in the Wendover area have been focused on understanding the ground underneath where the track will be built. This is called ‘Ground Investigation’ or ‘GI’.

GI is particularly important in high speed rail, as modern high speed trains travel at around four times the speed of Victorian trains.

When the original railway network was built in the 19th century, the track and trains could follow the landscape’s natural curves. High speed trains need a flatter track, passing over and under the natural landscape; so understanding the ground conditions is vital to building a safe railway. HS2 has completed the largest GI programme in the UK, with 8,000 boreholes dug across Phase One, and over 1 million lab tests carried out.

L'Etape UK The magic of the Tour de France comes to the Chilterns

L’Etape UK is the UK’s official Tour de France sportive and takes place on 14 July. During this year’s Tour de France (628 July), Buckinghamshire businesses have a unique chance to capitalise on all the fun and activity by getting involved with the UK’s affiliated event – L’Etape UK – the only official Tour de France sportive (cycling event) in the UK. Cycling tours such as Tour de Yorkshire and L'Etape Caledonia have been proven to massively boost the local economy, in Yorkshire’s case by £98 million. The organisers are hoping for 3500 riders and 7000 spectators to come and support along the route in addition to going to the festival site at Penn House.

Fittingly, this Chilterns cycling extravaganza takes place on Bastille Day, France’s national day. This is a great chance to showcase local businesses, who can get involved with this

A Hidden Wendover

Wendover Tennis and Squash club has undergone a major renovation over the past few months.

The squash courts have been refurbished, with glass doors installed.

The three main tennis courts have been resurfaced with Tiger Turf Pro, which is a state of the art surface, ideal for recreational and match play. This was a massive investment for the club of £60,000.

The club is very successful. Several of our squash juniors play at County level and many are county champions. We are also incredibly proud of 15 year old Katie Malliff who plays for England and regularly wins against girls two age groups above her own. We currently have 90 junior squash members, and the club is buzzing with activity every day after school and at the weekend. Regular adult leagues and social sessions of squash and racketball are popular.

We have a new tennis coach, who is encouraging beginner, intermediate and advanced adults and children to develop their ball skills. Keith is proving to be very popular, and the enthusiasm for tennis is most definitely on the up.

For those who like playing matches there are several tennis teams playing successfully in two local leagues.

There are four social tennis sessions for adults weekly and the Whatsapp group plays as many days as they can. A junior club night for all rackets after school happens on a Wednesday, at no extra cost.

The Lionel Abel-Smith Trust funded the purchase of a recycled portacabin to be used by volunteers, who give their time to work on the stunning 5 acre site where the charity supports those with mental health needs.

This lovely facility creates a space for volunteers to store personal items, have a cuppa and relax after their hard work in the gardens.

Wendover Dementia Action Alliance Last month Wendover Dementia Action Alliance (WDAA) published a diagram showing the various local organisations which are all working together to make Wendover a Dementia Friendly place.

Youth Wendover Youth Centre (never Wharf Campus. underestimate the young) WYC’s 7th AGM was held at the end of March with an emphasis on what the young people of Wendover have been involved in during the past year and a Vision for the future of Youth Work in Wendover. Finances continue to be tight but with the help of the Community, Wendover Parish Council and The Lionel Abel -Smith Trust, see page 15, we manage to survive.

The numbers show an impressive footfall through the Centre. During term time an average weekly attendance is over 300, and during school holidays we still see attendance approaching 250 per week.

In addition to being involved in the Clubs, activities and trips, Young People are also active Volunteers in the Community. The WAY Board (funded by BCC) facilitates them being active participants with local Councils and other organisations. RAF Halton World War Experience for Local Children Bucket Collection Children from Aston Clinton School visited for RAF RAF Halton in April to experience a day in Benevolent Fund the life of a child during World War 2.

On arrival, they were split into six groups and moved between the Trenchard Museum and the James McCudden Flight Heritage Centre. They took part in various historical activities which included: trying on respirators, making a simple bed with sheets and blankets, learning about the sort of food and rations they would have been eating, looking at weapons and trying the flight simulator.

During the day they experienced two ‘air raids’ where they were taken to the shelter by the wardens who talked to them about life during an air raid and introduced some songs and games that they would have played and sang to pass the time. The wardens led discussions on life during an air raid, evacuation and dealing with the aftermath.

The team consisted of Cpl ‘Boothy’ Booth and Sgt Owen Clarke, Sgt Clair Watson, CT ‘Swinny’ Swinscoe and Warrant Officer Mark Notts.

The bucket collection raised a staggering £863.

During March 2019 RAF Halton supported the RAF Benevolent Fund at two bucket collection events raising over £900.00.

Sgt Griffiths, who is the Station champion for The Cpl Hill & Sgt Perkes at the RAF Benevolent Fund, said: Aylesbury Odeon.

Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss Nikki Magrath (55) from Amersham has suffered from hearing problems since early childhood, but her life changed entirely when she lost her hearing in a single day. “I had childhood conductive hearing loss which left me virtually deaf in one ear, but my other ear was fully functioning, and I managed for 40 years until suddenly in July 2000 I woke up one morning to find I was totally deaf in my good, hearing ear, leaving me with just 25% hearing in my already deafened ear.

“They also taught me a lot about SSHL and how it should be treated just in case it ever reoccurred; although I never dreamt that it would.” However, in 2016 Nikki was struck by sudden hearing loss again which took all her remaining hearing away leaving her completely deaf, changing her life in an instant.

“I was living in the USA at the time and I became a hearing aid wearer straight away 30

“The childhood hearing loss didn’t affect

me as much growing up as I adapted to only hearing properly with one ear and that became my ‘normal’ hearing. When my good ear became deaf with SSHL it was a lot harder to adjust. I had to become a hearing aid wearer 24/7. The most important thing for me was to be able to always hear my two young children. But then when I had my second SSHL loss my life changed again. I was terrified. This time Aston Hearing were able to help me immediately which meant my hearing loss wasn’t permanent this time.

“With the quick action and support of my audiologist, I was lucky to get the right treatment and to save some of my hearing. I realised how precious the voices of my family are to me and how much I would miss them if this were to ever reoccur. Tribute: Douglas Joss Douglas Alexander Joss was born 15 May 1921 in Aberdeen to Herbert and Dora Joss and would become the eldest of 5 children.

His father worked for the post office and in 1923 went to Uganda as a veterinary assistant. This was the first of his many of travels.

It was a short-lived stay as due to illness his father was repatriated the following year. They returned to Aberdeen before moving to Oundle. At about 5 years of age Doug showed an entrepreneurial spirit - he was able to swap his sister Dora for a bicycle. Whilst he was pleased with the trade, his mother was less so. The family moved again, this time to Coventry, in 1932.

In November 1938, at the age of 17, he went to Birmingham and applied to join the RAF. They persuaded the Flight Sergeant in charge to release me from duties on that day, which I was allowed to spend lying on the deck all day where my friends brought me presents. A few razor blades, a packet of cigarettes or sometimes a few biscuits, whether they had scrounged them or stolen them from the Officer’s Mess, I don’t know. How much the simple things in life can be appreciated in difficult circumstances. I will always remember it and them with much gratitude and affection.”

Following treatment at the Institute of Tropical Medicine at RAF Halton he returned to his duties as a rigger and applied for aircrew.

He and his fellow crew members joined 626 Squadron at RAF Wickenby on 14 June 1944, he was a rear gunner in a Lancaster and 2 weeks later they went on their first sortie of what was to be 31, it was to Siracourt site of V1 bunker the last to Gelsenkirchen on 11 November. His crew was the first to survive a tour for many months.

He was commissioned mid tour and spent a short time in UK before becoming a personnel officer travelling to India, Chittagong in what was then East Pakistan and now Bangladesh, Burma, Malaya then Singapore and helped repatriate female POWs. VJ day had been declared as they approached Malaysia.

Following another short spell in the UK he was posted to Germany as PA to Deputy Commander in Chief of the British Air Forces of Occupation and was then sent as OC of the Leave Centre in Scharfoldendorf, where he developed a stomach complaint that required hospitalization at the Military Hospital in Rinteln where he was to meet his future wife Lois.

He died on 19 February 2019.

Local Face: Margaret Ridgway Margaret Mortimer was born in Park Street, Aylesbury, in 1919 and naturally attended Queen’s Park School, now the Queen’s Park Arts Centre, leaving at the age normal for the time, 14. Susan Diane, the daughter of Margaret’s brother Frank, later set up the eponymous dance school there! In order to register with an employment agency Margaret had to pay a fee of £1 so her first employment was washing up in local cafés in order to save. Once she had the money she signed up with Kingsbury Servants’ Agency.

In 1934 Margaret secured a position as Scullery Maid with Lord and Lady Anstruther whose London home was not far from Buckingham Palace. As the most junior person on the staff she lived in the attic with other girls where the water froze in winter. She was up at 5am every morning to light the range ready for Cook to come down and start the breakfasts. She used a wooden tub for water and scrubbed the floor on her hands and knees. Her hands became very rough and dry. The work was hard but there was great cameraderie amongst the Below Stairs staff - yes, it was just like the TV show Upstairs, Downstairs. She later trained as a Parlour Maid.

Margaret hadn’t broken her links with home, though. She had a beau, Arthur Ridgway, who would cycle from Wendover to visit her in London! There was a lot of talk of War in those years so they married in Walton Parish Church in June 1939. He had found a one up one down cottage next to the Rose and Crown pub in the Tring Road, demolished and re-developed about 7 years ago. He was called up and Margaret didn’t see Arthur again until the end of the War. Meanwhile, Margaret was contributing to the War effort by cycling to work in Rivetts in Aylesbury. Unfortunately, during that time she became ill and was admitted to Tindall General Hospital for surgery and a long convalescence.

Arthur returned from the War with no teeth but as he had been an ambulance driver, he was able to continue with that work at Princess Mary Hospital, Wendover, until he retired. They were both very sad to see the Hospital close.

Margaret was never able to return to full-time work but she did put the skills learned in service to good use. She made all her own clothes by sewing or knitting and became an expert embroiderer.

Later on she would send embroidery work to her other brother,

Eric, who had emigrated to America. He died about 10 years ago and her eyesight deteriorated so no more needlework.

While Arthur and Margaret were living in Tring Road, they saw the Colet Road estate being built so when their landlord ended the tenancy, they moved to Hampden Road. In those days, Wendover had 3 greengrocers, 2 pharmacists and a wet fish shop. The Manor An example of Waste had Carter’s Garage which is now Margaret’s needlework Budgens. Arthur’s sister eventually moved into Vinetrees and they looked forward to living there in retirement but Arthur died before the move about 25 years ago.

Margaret has really enjoyed living in Vinetrees as it is so close to the High Street. She is now registered blind but is still able to do her own shopping and look after herself. She is particularly grateful to the staff at Wendover Post Office who are most helpful and Budgens who always come to her aid as she enters the shop. Thankfully, her brother Frank does all her reading and writing for her. Bucks Association for the Blind organised for Margaret to attend a Blind Club in Bedgrove once a fortnight. Their last meeting before Easter was on Thursday 18 April and they celebrated her birthday as it was her centenary on Friday 22 April. Congratulations, Margaret.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

Being the Chairman of the Parish Council (PC) can be quite satisfying. It can also be quite frustrating, particularly when you see something that could easily be fixed but which just drags on.

While the PC does solve many problems some, it appears, are intractable. Parking is one of those things. Where the PC directly controls off-road parking facilities it has improved and extended them. More spaces are planned for the Witchell soon. So, it is intensely frustrating that other authorities, the big ones that control on-road parking and the Library car park seem much less engaged.

The Clerk and PC Councillors recently attended a meeting with AVDC/BCC to talk about parking. It was exactly five years since the last meeting, at which action to reline the library car park to add more bays and other improvements were offered, and in that five years nothing has been done.

The Library car park is still scruffy and poorly marked. Casual commuter and school parking still clutters our streets, footpaths remain obstructed and it’s getting worse.

It’s doubtful that the District and County Councils, with unitary transition on their minds, will even consider Wendover parking.

I just wanted you to know that the PC is still pushing the issue with them.
