Have your say on how Health and Social Care is delivered in Bucks Health and social care providers in Buckinghamshire, including GPs and Buckinghamshire Healthcare NHS Trust, are calling on residents to participate in the new Health & Social Care Survey. They would like to understand how residents from all backgrounds currently use health and social care services and are particularly interested to hear which services are working well and where possible improvements could be made.

Woodlanders' Lives & Landscapes

Lockdown challenges help Bucks New University-led history project progress Organisers say the coronavirus-enforced lockdown led to quicker than expected progress for a Buckinghamshire New University-led five-year research project examining the lives of people who lived and worked in central Chilterns over the past 150 years.

Dr Helena Chance (pictured), Associate Professor in Design Studies, who is heading the project, said lockdown had been 'a catalyst' in collecting data more quickly and improving communication between volunteers in the project, Woodlanders' Lives and Landscapes.

It examines the day-to-day lives of people who worked in the chair-making and woodware industries, and in lace-making, beading and plaiting straw in the central Chilterns, going back to the 19th Century.

Volunteers include two Bucks New University BA (Hons) Graphic Design students, Caitlin Martin and Charlotte Ketteridge, with the University also employing Research Associate Lesley Hoskins. Caitlin and Charlotte have used their skills to create promotion and information material for the project.

Dr Chance said: "Caitlin and Charlotte's contribution has been extremely beneficial for both them and the project and I'm looking forward to working with them more in future, and also working with students elsewhere in the University. We now have 23 volunteers actively working on research, with five volunteers coming forward during lockdown.

"The lockdown has given time for researchers to collect huge amounts of data from the population censuses from the mid 19th to early 20th centuries, giving us a breakdown of age, gender and occupation of village residents, so that they can analyse how the numbers of those working in the village industries we are researching change over time."

"During the lockdown period, volunteers were willing and had the time to learn new skills, and our online meetings gave them the opportunity to share information and help each other," added Dr Chance.

"Plus, online training was an innovation we were able to explore and record, meaning it is now available to volunteers at any time, and for volunteers joining in the future. This is a great benefit.

"Now that we are beginning to collect data from so many villages, it will be possible to understand how the range of and changes in occupations varied regionally across the central Chilterns.

Butterfly Bazaar’s Autumn and Winter Craft Fairs Following the success of their Autumn Craft Fair 2019 in Prestwood, Butterfly Bazaar has decided to host both an Autumn and a Winter Craft Fair this year. Wendover Christmas Carol Trail As we go to press in September, new rules about social activities are being decreed.

One thing everyone has worked out is that Christmas 2020 will be like no other we have ever experienced. At the moment we don't even know how many people, if any, we can invite to eat in our own homes!

There will be Christmas Trees with lights although Wendover Parish Council has already had to cancel the usual Lights Switch On gathering on the Manor Waste.

There will not be a CribFest this year either.

Instead, we need an outdoor activity to help us feel Christmassy. We'll also need to make sure we keep a safe distance from people from other households.

We also need to feel that we, as a community, are doing something together.

What better, then, than preparing and visiting displays of Christmas Carols?

Bear in mind that if you have an outdoor display it will need to be weatherproof. We never know what to expect. If it's in a window, take care that curtains can be closed or opened safely if that's what you plan to do.

Your display will need to be ready by Friday 11 December and be in place at least until Monday 21 December. That gives people two weekends to follow the trail and enjoy all the Carol displays. An easy to follow trail will be made available so that everyone will be able to enjoy this community activity.

£2.1m boost to Buckinghamshire's rural broadband

More than 750 rural homes and businesses will get gigabit-capable broadband by December 2021 as part of a £2.1 million scheme to extend the fibre-optic network further into Buckinghamshire's countryside.

The project is a partnership between Buckinghamshire Council, Buckinghamshire Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP), and telecoms provider Openreach.

The Buckinghamshire Rural Business Broadband project will provide 'fibre to the premises' connections capable of gigabit (1,000mbps) speeds to 270 of the county's most rural businesses, and 485 residential premises in the surrounding communities.

The scheme is funded by a £1.8m grant through the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA) from the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development, and a contribution from Openreach.

Welcoming the news, Martin Tett, Leader of Buckinghamshire Council, said local authorities in Buckinghamshire had a strong track record of support for broadband improvements for residents and businesses in areas considered commercially unviable.

Since 2013, through partnership schemes with the LEP, superfast broadband has been

connected to more than 50,000 homes and businesses in the county, and 96.4% of premises now have superfast broadband speeds - up from 68.3% when the work began in 2013 Martin said: “In Buckinghamshire we have one of the highest percentages of small businesses of any council area, and they make a significant contribution to the national economy.

“While we're building a gigabit Britain, many of our rural residents and businesses are still struggling to operate with broadband at a snail's pace, and I'm pleased this project brings many more out from a digital backwater and on to the superfast highway."

Martin said the Council and the LEP would work with the Government to ensure that all residents and businesses in Buckinghamshire can benefit from improved digital connectivity, and see how the county could benefit from the £5 billion Whitehall has set aside for gigabit-capable broadband.

Richard Harrington, CEO of Buckinghamshire LEP, said: “We are thrilled to be able to support this project in its aim to provide better connectivity to our poorest served businesses.

"It is vital we support businesses in their aims to digitise, especially as we look past COVID-19 and the changes to workplace models we are seeing. Buckinghamshire LEP are working towards a new digital strategy for Buckinghamshire, and better digital infrastructure forms a core component of this."

Laura Whelan, Openreach Regional Partnerships Director South and East, said: “We have already made a great deal of progress across Buckinghamshire as a result of our partnership on the Connected Counties programme, making faster broadband available to tens of thousands of properties for the first time.

"The last five months have proved the vital importance of being connected. We know there is more to do, particularly in the most remote areas, and that’s why we’re delighted to be working with Buckinghamshire Council on extending that reach even further.

"We’ve also recently announced our own Openreach commitment to extend our fibre build to include the Gerrards Cross and Penn exchanges as part of our ambition to cover more harder to reach areas in the County.”

Lindengate Mental Health Charity

We are delighted to be able to start running some of our programmes this month.

Rest & Reflect continues to be a success, with over 750 visitors since opening our gates in the middle of June, offering anyone who has been affected by COVID-19 a peaceful environment to take time for themselves.

Wellbeing Pathways is our weekly programme for people with low to moderate mental health needs. We have started the process of enabling people to come back to Lindengate, based on nature based activities in groups, linked to our Five Ways to Wellbeing.

Nurture Pathways, for all care workers looking after someone at home, in their home, a care home, or similar environment. Take part in arts and crafts activities or gardening, on the 1st and 3rd Friday of the month, between 10am - 12pm. Those attending will need to register in advance.

Planted is a six week programme for 13-15 year olds, starting on Friday 25 September,

Healing Pathways is for adults and children aged 13-15 years, bi-weekly over 6 weeks. Again, using the Five Ways to Wellbeing, to provide hope, support and understanding, for those experiencing loss, grief and bereavement.

Minority Women’s Wellbeing Group, for adults, taking place every month starting 3 October, supporting women from the BAME community, offering a safe and relaxing environment to build resilience and improve wellbeing.

We also have very successful kitchen gardens.

Our produce is used as part of our nature based activities for our Gardeners, for cooking projects and sold locally at Buckmoorend Farm, to bring additional revenue back into Lindengate.

During lockdown, a member of the Chilterns MS Centre decided to set himself a very tough challenge to help keep him active and also raise money to help others with multiple sclerosis (MS). Patrick Burke, from Berkhamsted, decided to walk for one hour using his rollator, and set himself a large fundraising target.

MS affects messages from the brain going to his legs, meaning Patrick has chronic muscle fatigue and poor balance which make walking extremely difficult. Despite this, he completed training most days and managed to walk for the full hour. Although he was incredibly tired afterwards, he said: “I am thrilled that I have proved to myself that I can walk for an hour. Way back in June when I started practising I could only manage 15 minutes so this really has been a big personal achievement and it is something I will remember for a long time.

Squadron Leader Laurence ‘Loz’ Humphreys has passed the command of Recruit Training Squadron at RAF Halton before departing for Winterbourne Gunner to take up a position in The Defence Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Centre, (CBRN).

He handed over the Sword to new Officer Commanding, Squadron Leader Katy Steed, Provost Branch, who said: “Having previously served as an instructor at RAF College Cranwell, I am delighted to take over command of RTS and be back within a Phase 1 training environment.

“Originally from Chesterfield in Derbyshire, I come to RTS with over 19 years’ service, both in the ranks and commissioned service. I look forward to the challenges of Command and being part of RAF Halton Station.”

Tribute: Valerie Moir 1934 – 2020

Val was a long term resident of Wendover, arriving in 1971, and staying in the same house on the Tring Rd for the rest of her life.

There she raised her two sons and welcomed her two grandchildren.

Her overriding sense of fairness meant that she would never prejudge and would put herself out on a limb to ensure, where possible, that justice was done. She was not afraid to speak the truth where it may not have been welcomed.

Val was a member of the U3A and Buckinghamshire Archaeological Society.

She studied her own family history and took her roots back to Oxfordshire and Ross and Cromarty. She was a keen gardener and many stopped to admire the neat and always colourful beds and box hedging on their way up the hill. The “Father Christmas” hats on the topiary always raised a smile.

Local Face: Tess Churchard Tess moved to Wendover 11 years ago with husband Matt and her young son Ben. Having grown up in Great Missenden, Tess loves living in Wendover which she says is so welcoming and friendly.

Tess is a trustee at the Wendover Youth Centre and has worked on a voluntary basis to run drama classes there throughout this summer. “It’s been lovely to offer children who have been off school for so long a chance to meet up and have fun.” She also volunteers at John Hampden School, helps with junior church at St Mary’s and has been a volunteer at Wendover Swimming Pool.

At primary school in Great Missenden, Tess had a teacher who loved drama and gave her part of the witches’ speeches from Macbeth to perform. She remembers ending the speech with a loud scream before having an asthma attack – but she was hooked!

“I went into acting to perform in plays that had an important message to tell or to make people laugh and these are the jobs I have been most proud of.” As an actress Tess started in theatre and has played leading roles in the West End including 39 Steps and Noises Off. After her son Ben was born she didn’t want to do any more theatre tours and moved into more TV work including Call the Midwife, Casualty, Doctors, The Coroner and EastEnders.

“At Drama Hub I treat each student as an individual, drawing on their interests and often writing scripts especially for them. In our shows there is no star - every student gets a decent role. In our recent version of the BFG we had 7 Sophies and 7 BFGs! “Many of my students have been with me from the beginning and some of my older students help out with the younger classes.

Older students take part in film making workshops and we are developing a student technical team.

“Coronavirus has been a challenge for us. We missed a term of face to face lessons due to lockdown but when the regulations changed I was able to change our planned show of the BFG into a socially distanced film which we showed at outdoor screenings in September.”

St Mary’s vicar Sally Moring has been very supportive of Drama Hub and last year Drama Hub students of different ages put on 3 different shows there: one based around Michael Rosen’s poems, a Horrible Histories show and Alan Ayckbourn’s play ‘Ernie’s Incredible Illucinations’.

She moved to London to do a Sculpture degree and then worked for a Victim Support Scheme, saving up to fund a one year postgraduate course at Drama School.

She paid her way over the next few years with work as a waitress, cook, furniture maker and tutor.

5 years ago Tess decided to combine her 2 loves – teaching and acting – and started Drama Hub to provide affordable drama classes to local children and young people.

Drama Hub celebrates its 5th Year anniversary this October and now has over 90 pupils.

When Tess was 30 her father was diagnosed as terminally ill - she took some time out of acting to be with him and take stock. She had always loved tutoring so she decided to do a post graduate teaching course.

Since then Tess has combined acting and teaching. She has taught in hospital, special and mainstream schools.

“It’s a privilege and a joy to teach the children and young people of Wendover.

They are so creative and enthusiastic – we have such fun in lessons. As a shy child drama helped me so much and it’s lovely to see my students grow in confidence and develop their communication and collaboration skills.

Tess is planning to stage an outdoor production involving local children and young people in the first week of the summer holiday in 2021 – she hopes this will become an annual event and will lead to a really established Wendover Youth Theatre.

Matters Arising Wendover Parish Council Page

View from the Chair

As I write this Wendover is bustling as people enjoy a late warm spell. The pavement cafés that are now a feature of the village are bursting with life and I hope it is helping the businesses that surround them as they strive to recover from the lockdown period.

The Parish Council is very aware of the disturbance that is caused by high speed and high volume motors racing along our bypass. I have in the past attended meetings with our County Councillors and the Deputy Police Commissioner for Thames Valley in an attempt to fix this problem but our efforts have trickled away as these things do. The WPC has resolved to set up a community led working group to look at all of the options and to bring pressure to bear on those with the power to improve the situation for residents. One of the results of the WPC’s experience working with the Wardens during lockdown is that we have discovered that while care and support is available it is a fragmented resource. Help is available from many sources and for many things but it’s not clear how it can be accessed. WPC has resolved to work with the community to see if a way can be found to simplify the process. The continental café culture has been well received by the community. Regulars visiting Rumsey’s and No.2 are now joined by visitors from outside the village, all enjoying the delightful atmosphere created by this initiative. The Clerk is now consulting with both businesses to examine the feasibility of this becoming a permanent feature in the village.
