Spring 2022 feels like the right time to celebrate the people of Wembley Park, in a new way. Those who run our shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

Those who call Wembley Park home. But most importantly, the many who work tirelessly behind the scenes to keep the area running smoothly, day in, day out, and whose contribution we appreciate wholeheartedly. It is with this spirit that Park Life was born. A new magazine for the People of Wembley Park, which – we hope – will inspire you to make the most of your neighbourhood, learn where it has come from and where it is going. EQL Fitness Opening at the end of the year, EQL Fitness will be bringing their community-focused, fitness lifestyle gym to Wembley Park in the 30,000 sq ft site next to Union Park. The gym will be a destination for all things fitness, including a fully fledged CrossFit studio on the lower-ground floor which will also host events and competitions from leading brands.

They even have fresh coffee to go and deli food prepared onsite.

The Cuddle Club Catering to Wembley Park’s growing community of furry residents, The Cuddle Club is opening its first dog grooming and boutique concept in Wembley Park.

The Club also offers a doggy day care service, providing a social pet playground under the supervision of The Cuddle Club’s fully trained staff.

What’s new at London Designer Outlet

We see some big brands expand at London Designer Outlet, with Nike, Calvin Klein, and Tommy Hilfiger all growing the size of their stores. Set to open this June, the new Nike Unite concept store will extend to two levels and features a community wall highlighting the store team and local partners, with design elements incorporating local landmarks and hometown heroes – taking pride in Brent’s roots. Increasing its footprint by 68%, Nike Unite joins Tommy Hilfiger and Calvin Klein who have doubled and tripled their store sizes and outlet fashion offering.

My name is Atul Kochhar. I’m a chef and restaurateur with restaurants across the UK, including Masalchi in Wembley Park.

Can you give us a bit about your background?

My interest in cooking started from a very early age, growing up in India. My family are from Northern India, but I travelled all around the country picking up many different culinary techniques and cultures. I moved to the UK in 1994 and started at a restaurant called Tamarind.

In 2001 I became the first Indian chef to get a Michelin star whilst I was at Tamarind. It was an amazing achievement. I think I didn’t sleep for days afterwards. In 2003 I set up my own restaurant called Benares which earned me my second star in 2007. I continued my journey opening several award-winning restaurants and today my focus is to continue the success of Atul Kochhar Hospitality Group.

At Masalchi we celebrate not just one Indian cuisine, but all the regional cuisines across the country. That’s a big difference, because you cannot put the whole country on one plate. You’ve got to explore it and understand how the food is constructed and markets and street vendors are the first place to get inspiration.

Parking Updates

Wembley Park’s award-winning, multi-storey Pink Parking has launched 39 electric charging stations, covering 78 bays spread across three levels. Residents will benefit from a 25% discount for EV charging of their electric vehicle by signing up for contract parking. Visit wembleyofficialparking.com for more information.

And the good news doesn’t end there: all car parks in Wembley Park will soon be going barrierless, a pioneering concept which will make access a breeze.

Through a system of cameras, licence plate recognition and dynamic pricing, drivers will be able to enter the car parks without the need to pre-register and will have the ability to pay by coins, notes, credit cards or contactless. Stay tuned.

Synonymous with some of the world’s biggest artists and shows for over 60 years, the iconic concert and events venue is expected to welcome over 1 million visitors this year alone.

I was previously a teacher. At some point, I wanted a change – still in a role that I’d find rewarding. One day, I saw a recruitment ad for the Met Police. And here I am today, three years on, in Wembley Park!

What does your average day look like for you and the team?

We’re a team of one sergeant and six police constables. We work on shift patterns, seven days a week. It’s quite a varied role. One day on admin, another day outside, keeping an eye on the neighbourhood.

10 — Safety

How do you keep Wembley Park safe?

Proactive patrols are key. Our uniforms alone can deter people from getting up to no good. We do plain clothes patrols too, so just because you don’t see the uniform doesn’t mean we are not around! Talking with residents, businesses and concierges also helps us build pictures of what is going on and what people’s concerns are.

Keeping You Safe Hi, Claire. Why did you decide to become a police officer?

Under a special agreement with The Mayor’s Office for Policing and Crime, Wembley Park funds six police constables and one sergeant to support the community and deter crime. In this interview, PC Claire King talks more about her role and relationship with the neighbourhood.

How do you work with Wembley Park’s estate protection officers?

Very closely. We are in their Control Room daily, discussing any identified concerns or reported issues. We review each situation together, working towards a positive outcome.

We all stay in contact with a two-way radio, which allows us to act quickly when we’re needed.

In your view, how safe is Wembley Park as a neighbourhood?

It is certainly a clean, well-lit neighbourhood.

There’s constantly people around, and the Wembley Park estate protection team are always on patrol, day and night. These combined forces help keep the area safe.

What are the most frequent issues you are currently experiencing?

Do you offer opportunities to meet your team?

Cannabis use, shoplifting, anti-social behaviour, and criminal damage to property are quite common. There’s been a recent increase in mobile phone thefts, too, which is an issue across the wider borough. Riders approach pedestrians and take phones straight out of their hands – it happens in seconds.

Of course. This year, we have held one surgery so far, with others to come. We would love for residents to come along and meet us.

Don’t be afraid, we are human!

Within a nice, relaxed atmosphere like Wembley Park, people can tend to let their guard down. I always recommend being aware of your surroundings and putting yourself in the perspective of those looking for targets. Think: “is my handbag properly closed, phone in my pocket? Am I holding it up or waving it around?.”

Beat the Heat 1 Keep yourself hydrated. There are several clean water drinking fountains in Union Park, and one by the entrance of Amazon Fresh, on Wembley Park Boulevard. Limit the consumption of alcohol, fizzy drinks, coffee, energy drinks, or other caffeinated beverages, as they dehydrate you.

2 Avoid direct sun and find shade, if possible.

Make use of the benches dotted around Wembley Park, such as the orange seaters under the cherry trees in Market Square.

Apply sunscreen regularly to avoid getting sunburnt.

3 Eat smaller meals and more regularly, particularly food with nutrients (not empty carbs) and higher water content (fruits and vegetables). There are plenty of options across Wembley Park for healthy snacks and light meals – for example at BOXPARK Wembley.

If you see an offence happening right in front of you, or someone’s life is in danger, call 999. Non-emergency situations can be reported online or via 101. On Crimestoppers, users can report crime or suspicious circumstances anonymously if they prefer. I always encourage people to stay vigilant and alert, reporting any crimes to the police. Also, it may sound a little old fashioned, but do get to know your neighbours, because you never know when you might need them, or they might need you!

Wembley Park’s Health & Safety Team share seven tips to keep staying healthy when the thermometer goes up.

4 Wear light, loose-fitting, airy, light-coloured clothing and a hat made of breathable material. Tight clothing traps heat.

5 Be able to recognise the symptoms of heatrelated illnesses and true heat emergencies, such as heat cramps, heat rash, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

6 Heat stress may affect older people more than others. Provide a helping hand for those over 65 years old, as they may be at increased risk of heat-related illnesses.

7 If you have babies or young children, keep a close eye, as they quickly lose body fluids through sweating. They need to drink regularly, wear light clothing, and be kept cool.

Lights, camera, action!

Wembley Park is London’s new hotbed for filming, having recently featured in some of the world’s most popular shows at the cinema and TV. Wembley Park has recently welcomed crews from a range of popular productions, including the UK’s most watched soap, EastEnders, Apple TV+ smash hit Ted Lasso, which scooped an impressive seven Emmy® Awards, and Don’t Look Up, which was nominated for four Oscars, received four Golden Globe nominations and set a new record for the most viewing hours in a single week on Netflix.

Bridgerton, the Shondaland hit series on Netflix, also revealed its own Wembley Park connection, with Secret Cinema producing a spectacular show inviting visitors to Lady Whistledown’s Society Ball at a secret location named only as ‘a stunning indoor ballroom in Wembley.’ The string of recent film and TV productions in and around Wembley Park has also included Little Mix The Search, Peter Crouch’s Crouchy’s Year-Late Euros, The Grinch Musical and Fulwell 73’s

Stand Up To Cancer. An episode of The Apprentice was filmed in 2016 at Wembley Park, and there are currently four major streaming services in production across the neighbourhood. Wembley Park is certainly no stranger to being used as a filming location, with major motion pictures including RocknRolla and Get Him to the Greek featuring the area’s iconic entertainment venues. Remember that scene in Avengers: Age of Ultron where the Hulk has an epic battle with Tony Stark? All filmed inside Brent Civic Centre in the heart of Wembley Park, which is also credited with the Stephen Hawking biopic, The Theory of Everything. Historical drama The Crown features a range of scenes shot around Brent, while even Friends couldn’t resist Wembley Park’s charms – both The One with Ross’ Wedding and The One After Ross Says Rachel were filmed in the old Fountain Studios – today home to the Troubadour Wembley Park Theatre.

Over the years, Brent has also produced an impressive array of acting talent, including Wembley born and bred Riz Ahmed, Brentbased Laura Aikman and former long-term Queen’s Park resident Cillian Murphy. Oh, and did we mention that both Daniel Craig and Sienna Miller have chosen to make Brent their home over the years?

Wembley Park springs to life with ‘Figures of Change’

An incredible art trail consisting of eight major public realm artworks all by leading female artists from around the world.

In a not-so-distant past, Wembley wasn’t quite the culture vulture haven. Forward to 2022, and it’s a very different vibe: today, Wembley Park is home to an impressive array of free public art in unlikely spaces dotted around the neighbourhood. The Wembley Park Art Trail features artworks from big-ticket artists, including internationally renowned Jason Bruges and his immersive, digital Shadow Wall, and Mr Doodle, the 27-year-old artist whose cartoons today sell for $1m. In spring, eight additional artworks were added to the trail, titled Figures of Change and created by leading female artists from around the world.

by Brent resident Laxmi Hussain, based at Second Floor Studios & Arts in Wembley Park, pays tribute to the female form. Lois O’Hara’s colossal floor mural, Think Independently Together, aims to create a joyful, immersive space which celebrates the diversity in the area. Sofia Cianciulli’s project, e-motion, seen on multiple digital screens across the neighbourhood, explores themes of body, self-love, connection and disconnection through the blurry representations of a woman. Charley Peters’ Power Up! on the Spanish Steps depicts a succession of shooting stars that move onwards and upwards, mirroring the perseverance and resilience of women’s voices.

Next to each artwork, interactive signage enables visitors to unlock rich content via QR codes linking to a micro-site rich with information, artist interviews, and a GPSenabled map to follow the trail via smartphone. Figures of Change is open until the 30th of June, free to visit across Wembley Park.

Black Sheep Coffee on Olympic Way

to enjoy 365 days a year. This overhaul has included new paving and illumination, a 50% widening of the walkway, new restaurants and attractions such as BOXPARK Wembley, and an award-winning tree planting strategy. If you walk from Wembley Park tube station towards the National Stadium, you will pass through 24 matched pairs of trees that represent the best specimens from the northern hemisphere.

These trees are arranged like a map of the world, unfurled with West Coast America at the north end closest to the tube station, and East Coast Japan at Engineers Way. On the crossing with Fulton Road, the Botanical Bollards display the Latin and common name of each tree, along with its country of origin. A number allows you to you to find its location on Olympic Way. You’ll find the matching numbers engraved on a grille at the base of every tree. While closer to the Stadium, the Olympic Steps now replace the monolithic, 1970s steep concrete ramps known as the “Pedway”. They are equipped with four new high-capacity lifts, each providing space for three wheelchair users and their carers. As a bit of trivia, the area between Quintain Living’s Alameda and Madison, in which the steps sit,

14 — Regeneration

Julian Tollast, Quintain’s Head of Masterplanning and Design, shares some lesser-known facts about the regeneration of Olympic Way. Olympic Way has welcomed some of the world’s greatest events in history. Known by football fans as “Wembley Way”, the street was inaugurated in 1924 for the British Empire Exhibition and originally called “Kingsway”. It was then renamed “Olympic Way” in 1948, ahead of the Olympic Games held at Wembley. In 1993, Bobby Moore Bridge opened, taking its name after the England football hero who had died that year. The transformation of this iconic walkway was completed in June 2021, with the unveiling of the Olympic Steps. A project over 10 years in the making, Olympic Way today provides more space for residents and visitors

is equivalent to the size of the football pitch inside Wembley Stadium. If you walk up, you may notice that there are 48 steps leading up to the landing – a gentle nod to the 1948 Olympics. In all aspects of the designs we deliver at Wembley Park, we seek to ensure that these should activate all five senses. Not just the sight of a place, but also the sound, aroma, touch and – with some of the landscapes – even its taste!

Today, the transformed Olympic Way is a fitting celebration for this internationally recognised part of London.

The Southern section of Union Park

The new Atlantic Court provides a bookable space for games, including tennis and netball. Union Park features a sustainable water run-off system, which carries rainwater from around the neighbourhood, filters it, and then releases it into the main pond. Trees, lawns and wildflowers – even a ‘bug hotel’ – complement the ponds and water features. Visible from Olympic Way, the northern section of Union Park is currently being built on the old Yellow Parking. It will start to open in 2025 and will feature a more biodiverse, naturalistic design, including a bandstand and a dedicated community centre.

With the first section now completed and accessible, Union Park is a new urban park for residents and visitors that puts sustainability and community at its heart.

A New Park for Wembley Park The same building will house the HQ of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, which announced its move to Wembley Park in 2019. With many of Wembley Park’s shops welcoming dogs, including those at London Designer Outlet, and Quintain Living’s rental homes also being pet friendly, Wembley Park is one of the first new neighbourhoods in London that is actively dog-friendly. Union Park adds to these credentials: as well as designated areas for dogs to run off lead, the new Cuddle Club pet parlour, opening this summer, will serve the needs of Wembley Park’s four-legged residents, whilst their owners enjoy a latte at Out of Office Coffee next door.

15 — Regeneration

The past two years have shown, clearer than ever, how important it is that we all have access to wide-open green spaces to support mental health and wellbeing. And quite fittingly, it was during this period that Union Park – Wembley Park’s first major park in over 100 years – was announced. The southern section of Union Park is now open and ready to welcome children and families this summer. It features a play park, children’s paddling pool and an outdoor gym – which will be an extension of the new EQL Fitness gym beside it, set to open later this year. Next to the gym, Canopy Nursery is ideally located for parents and guardians who live or work in the Wembley Park.

Wembley Park is home to over 10,000 residents, each with their own unique story to tell. Each issue, we’ll chat to one of our residents and discover what life in the neighbourhood means to them. We start with fashion and celebrity stylist Emily and her beloved French bulldog.

A Day in the Life of...

Hi there! What’s your name, and what do you do?

My name is Emily and I’m a Londonbased fashion and celebrity stylist, and mentor.

How long have you been a Wembley Park resident?

16 — People of Wembley Park

I’ve lived in Wembley Park with Quintain Living since Spring 2020. My apartment is in Canada Gardens, very close to the new Union Park.

Can you describe what your average working day looks like?

As a stylist, I need to get a lot done during the working day, so I wake up at 5am every morning and start my day by sending and answering emails. I like to walk my dog around Wembley Park as the sun rises which helps energise me for the rest of the day. After grabbing a coffee from Out of Office Coffee, I make my way back to my apartment to prepare for my team of assistants to

arrive. It’s extremely helpful to have a versatile environment with work-friendly facilities like the study room, clubhouse and quiet roof terrace where I can work comfortably.

The Wembley Park neighbourhood is also very convenient for my lifestyle – everything is close by. The London Designer Outlet is a short walk from my apartment for any last-minute fashion needs and transport links are also excellent – I can be in central London in less than 12 minutes.

How would you sum up the vibe of Wembley Park?

Vibrant, welcoming and convenient.

It’s the best place I have ever lived – feels like a home, like a family. There is pretty much everything I need within walking distance and there’s always something interesting and fun going on. The green spaces and new Union Park are a real bonus, especially for my French bulldog puppy who enjoys the dog-friendly spaces on our morning walks.

Earlier this year, we surveyed local residents and frequent visitors, and asked them to share their experience of life at Wembley Park. A Summer of Fun Jubilee Dance Party To mark the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, Wembley Park will be transformed into a huge street party for the Jubilee Dance Party on Saturday 4th June. Explore five stages of live music, street performers, public art installations, DJs and dance leaders alongside dedicated family zones and plenty of food options.

Visit Olympic Way to soak up the party atmosphere and share the jubilation, or get in the middle of it all and throw some shapes on the dancefloor.

The free to attend festival will not only celebrate the 70th anniversary of Queen Elizabeth II, but also honour the cultural diversity of Brent through different styles of dance, interactive art and eye-catching costumes.

The Sound Shell

At the former Yellow Parking, the entire North East Lands project will deliver over 2,000 new homes, shops, restaurants and commercial facilities and the remainder of the seven-acre Union Park. The first two plots within the wider North East Lands development (called NE02 and NE03) are now under construction including 769 new homes, 201 of which will be affordable.

This first phase of North East Lands also includes office and retail space as well as new parkland. Key works taking place in early to mid-2022 include:

Quintain has been building new homes, shops, restaurants and offices at Wembley Park for 20 years, creating an amazing neighbourhood in which to live, work, and be entertained. Here are the latest construction projects that our team is working on, including the remainder of Union Park.

Samovar Space Previously the Silver Car Park, this space has been refurbished and transformed over recent months. It’s a public area for multigenerational activity and was designed alongside young local adults in partnership with London School of Economics Apprenticeship as a legacy project of London Borough of Culture 2020. One section includes the new Sound Shell, a bandstand for Wembley Park’s busking programme and the other section a giant floor mural forming part of the Wembley Park art trail. The installation draws inspiration from the map of Brent seen from a bird’s eye view. Phase 2 of the project includes the installation of elements designed by the London School of Economics apprentices such as colourful timber decking and sheltered seating areas.

This site was ‘topped out’ (main construction completed) in winter. Works now include external brickwork, internal fit-out and preparing the homes for use at the end of 2022. The latest Considerate Construction Scheme score for this site is 45/50.

Children will go wild for one of Wembley Park’s four adventurous playgrounds, including the allweather play park opposite London Designer Outlet or Wembley Park’s brand-new addition in Union Park.

Shoots, slides, climbing frames and roundabouts will keep your little ones entertained for hours.

Water Works on a hot summer’s day will cool you off. Chill out by the fountains in Arena Square or head to Union Park to check out the clean water children’s paddling pool. A Sports Fan?
