Für das Weltkulturen Museum hat der peruanische Künstler Roldán Pinedo (geb. 1971), unterstützt von seinem Sohn Harry Pinedo, vier Gemälde als Auftragsarbeiten angefertigt: vier mächtige Bäume des Regenwaldes, prächtige Solitäre vor farbigen Hintergründen. Pinedo zeigt damit eine Indigene Perspektive auf das Ökosystem Regenwald. Seine Bäume verkörpern in ihrer Essenz mächtige Energien der Natur und wirken als spirituelle Hilfsgeister der Schamanen. Auf Bitte des Museums machte Pinedo Angaben zur Verwendung der Bäume: Aus dem Holz von Cashinbo und Huangana caspi werden u. a. Möbel hergestellt, aus der Zeder und dem Copaíba-Baum gewinnt man Medizinen.

Roldán Pinedo ist Indigener Herkunft (Shipibo) und kommt aus der ländlichen Tieflandregion um San Francisco de Yarinacocha. Sein Name in Shipibo lautet Shoyan Shëca, „Ruhelose Maus“.

1997 folgte er einer Einladung nach Lima, wo ein Team aus Malern aus verschiedenen Orten Perus zusammenfand. Seit dieser Zeit lebt und arbeitet er dort. In seine visionäre Malerei lässt Pinedo eigene Erfahrungen aus dem Gebrauch der Ayahuasca-Droge einfließen und visualisiert Indigene Vorstellungen von Geistern und spirituellen Entitäten, wie Tieren und Pflanzen des Regenwaldes. Er verwendet dafür Naturfarben aus eigener Herstellung. Peruvian artist Roldán Pinedo (b. 1971), assisted by his son Harry Pinedo, has created four paintings that have been commissioned especially for the Weltkulturen Museum: four mighty rainforest trees, each solitary and magnificent with vibrantly coloured backgrounds. With these works, Pinedo is presenting an Indigenous perspective on the rainforest as an ecosystem. His trees incorporate the vital forces of nature in their very essence, functioning as helping spirits of the shamans. The museum requested that Pinedo should include details of how the trees are generally used: furniture, among other things, is made from the wood of the cashinbo and the huangana caspi, while cedar and the copaiba tree produce medicines. Roldán Pinedo is of Indigenous Shipibo heritage and comes from the rural lowland region around San Francisco de Yarinacocha. His name in Shipibo is Shoyan Shëca, which means ‘restless mouse’. In 1997 he accepted an invitation to travel to Lima, where a team of painters from various parts of Peru were assembled. Since then he has been living and working in the city. Pinedo lets his own personal experiences from using ayahuasca, a psychoactive brew, flow into his visionary painting, visualising Indigenous notions of spirits and spiritual entities such as the animals and plants of the rainforest. For the process he uses natural paints that he has manufactured himself. The idea for the acquisition came from a Facebook post by Harry Pinedo which referred to Roldán Pinedo’s 2020 solo exhibition ‘Solo árboles’ (‘Only Trees’) at Centro Cultural Inca Garcilaso in Lima. • mona suhrbier, curator americas

Die Corona-Pandemie lässt unseren Alltag mitunter grau erscheinen und der Winter bescherte dazu noch sehr düstere Tage. Doch leuchtend weißer Schnee und Sonnenschein zeigten, wie sehr sich Licht und Farben positiv auf das Gemüt auswirken können. Mit einer neuen, sehr farbigen Ausstellung möchten auch wir zur Stimmungsaufhellung beitragen. Unter dem Titel „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras. Farben ordnen Welten“ thematisieren wir menschliche Farbwahrnehmung, Materialität von Farben sowie kulturell unterschiedliche Farbsymboliken. Wir möchten Sie dazu anregen, die Welt der Farben mit anderen Augen zu sehen und neu für sich zu entdecken. Im November mussten die Museen im harten Lockdown wieder schließen. Kurzarbeit in Betrieben führte zu Verzögerungen bei der Beschaffung von Materialien, die für den Ausstellungsaufbau benötigt wurden. Sehnlichst erwartete Probedrucke für das Begleitbuch blieben auf ihrem Weg mit der Post im Schneechaos stecken und unser Dienstfahrzeug für den Transport der Exponate weigerte sich im bitteren Frost anzuspringen.

Stress pur – aber kein Grund zum Schwarzsehen!

Diese Probleme waren lösbar und unser Arbeitsalltag wurde mit dem Thema Farbe immer bunter.

An dieser Buntheit möchten wir Sie teilhaben lassen.

Darum berichten wir hier über Sammlungsobjekte von besonderer Strahlkraft und über Künstler, die Farben meisterhaft in Szene setzen. Ein Beitrag zeigt, wie sehr unsere Restauratorinnen darauf achten, die Farben in jedem noch so kleinen Sammlungsobjekt zu erhalten. Auch in den kleinen Dingen des Alltags lassen sich Buntes, Neues und Faszinierendes entdecken!

The corona pandemic sometimes makes our everyday lives seem so grey, and this winter has given us even more utterly gloomy days. But glistening white snow and sunshine have shown us that light and colour can have such a positive effect on our mood. We’d like to help raise people’s spirits with a new and truly colourful exhibition entitled ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass. Colour Coding Worlds’. In this show, we explore how people perceive colour, the material aspects of colours, and the variations in colour symbolism in different cultures. We would like to inspire you all to rediscover the world of colours by looking at them in a new way. In November, the museum was forced to shut its doors once more as part of the strict lockdown. ‘Short-time working’ in companies entailed delays in obtaining materials needed for the exhibition. The eagerly awaited proof copies of the accompanying publication got stuck in the postal system amidst chaotic snow conditions, while our company vehicle tasked with transporting the exhibits refused to start its engine due to the bitter cold. It was pure stress – but no reason for us to ‘see black’ (to use the German term for being pessimistic)! Not only did we manage to solve these problems, but thanks to dealing with the topic of colour, our working day also became increasingly colourful. We’re keen to let you have a share of this multi-coloured world, and so we’ve included reports about objects from the collection that emit a very special radiance, and about artists who are adept at setting the scene with colour. One article shows just how much our conservators strive to preserve the colours in every single object, no matter how small. It all goes to show that the little things in our everyday lives can be sources of colour, innovation and fascination too!

Vier Fragen an Frauke Gathof

weltkulturen museum: Frauke, du bist wissenschaftliche Volontärin in der Abteilung Afrika. Woran arbeitest du gerade? frauke gathof: Als Volontärin arbeite ich in verschiedenen Tätigkeitsbereichen des Museums. Neben der Betreuung der Afrika-Sammlung recherchiere ich Themen für kommende Ausstellungen und aktuelle Projekte. Momentan beschäftige ich mich vor allem mit dem Ausstellungsprojekt „Invisible Inventories. Zur Kritik kenianischer Sammlungen in westlichen Museen“ als Teil des International Inventories Programme.

Das ist eine Kooperation mit Künstler*innen aus Kenia und Europa, dem Nairobi National Museum sowie dem RautenstrauchJoest-Museum in Köln, in dem wir uns mit Sammlungen kenianischer Objekte in Museen des Globalen Nordens auseinandersetzen. Neben dem Aufbau einer Datenbank sind die Ausstellungen in den drei beteiligten Museen zentral für die Sichtbarmachung des Themas und dem Zugang für die Öffentlichkeit. Wir am Weltkulturen Museum (die Afrika-Kustodin Leonie Neumann und ich) haben hierfür die Provenienz ausgewählter Objekte unserer Sammlung erforscht. Das waren z.B. Schmuck der Swahili, ein spezieller Kanga oder ein Schild der Maasai. Von den Maasai befinden sich auch Schmuckobjekte in der Frankfurter Sammlung. Diese werden in der Ausstellung „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras“ zu sehen sein, weshalb ich auch dazu recherchiert habe. wkm: Und was hat dich bei deiner Recherche über den Perlenschmuck für die Ausstellung „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras“ besonders interessiert? fg: Der Perlenschmuck der Maasai hat viele Facetten und Geschichten, deshalb sind es so spannende Objekte. Der eine interessante Punkt ist, dass anhand der Farbwahl und -anordnung innerhalb eines Ornamentes sowie der Ornamente im Ganzen verschiedene Eigenschaften der Tragenden verdeutlicht werden – wie Herkunftsregion, Verwandtschaft, sozialer Status, Geschlecht, Alter und vieles mehr. Jede Untergruppe der Maasai hat eigene Präferenzen in Farbe und Design, bestimmte Ornamente werden nur von Mitgliedern eines Altersgrades, von verheirateten Frauen oder Frauen, deren Sohn ein ilmurran (Krieger) ist, getragen. Dadurch können z. B. der soziale Status und die Zugehörigkeit zu einer Gruppe von anderen Maasai abgelesen werden. Es sind mehr soziale als modische Objekte. Gleichzeitig unterliegt die Anordnung und Kombination der Farben traditionell sehr strengen Regeln. Dass jede Sektion verschiedene Präferenzen hat, bedeutet nicht, dass Farben völlig frei wählbar sind. Der andere spannende Aspekt liegt

in der Geschichte der Perlen: Heute sind Bilder von MaasaiMännern und –Frauen mit Perlenschmuck in weiten Teilen der Welt bekannt. Die Ornamente aus kleinen bunten Glasperlen gelten als „typisch“ für die Maasai. Und tatsächlich sind sie ein wichtiger Teil der materiellen Kultur und zentrales Identifikationsmedium. Allerdings setzte die starke Präsenz des Perlenschmucks erst zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts ein. Überwiegend aus Europa wurden große Mengen nach Ostafrika importiert und dort in den lokalen Handel integriert. Zwar wurden bereits vorher Glasperlen, vor allem aus Indien und Venedig, in Ostafrika gehandelt, diese waren jedoch sehr teuer.

Die Maasai nutzten deshalb für ihren Schmuck überwiegend Perlen aus Metall. Der Schmuck aus Metall hatte deutlich weniger Aussagekraft als später der Perlenschmuck. Stattdessen waren die Bemalungen auf den Schilden der Krieger starkes Identifikationsmedium. Hier konnten regionale und familiäre Herkunft sowie sozialer Status abgelesen werden. Jedoch befahlen die Kolonialregierungen (in Kenia Großbritannien, in Tansania Deutschland) um die Jahrhundertwende, die gesamte Bevölkerung zu entwaffnen. Da im Zuge der Entwaffnung auch die Schilde nicht mehr öffentlich getragen werden durften, suchten die Maasai eine neue Möglichkeit der Identifikation nach außen. Die Glasperlen wurden gerade populär und durch die niedrigeren Preise für viele erreichbar. Die Maasai integrierten diese in ihre materielle Kultur und luden sie mit neuen Bedeutungen auf. wkm: Lass uns noch mal über Farben sprechen, das Thema unserer Ausgabe. Die Farben und ihre Anordnung unterliegen also einer gewissen Ordnung. Könntest du uns etwas dazu erzählen? fg: Für den Perlenschmuck verwenden die Maasai hauptsächlich die Farben Gelb, Grün, Rot, Schwarz, Blau, Weiß und Orange. Für die Kombination der Farben innerhalb eines Ornaments bilden verschiedene Farbsets die Grundlage. Sie geben vor, welche Farben in welcher Anordnung verwendet werden. Neben der klassischen Kombination aus Weiß, Rot und Schwarz/Blau bestehen die Sets meist aus mehreren Farbpaaren. Diese bilden sich aus einer „starken“ (Rot, Schwarz oder Blau) und einer „schwachen“ Farbe. Das Ziel hierbei ist die Erzeugung möglichst starker Kontraste, die die Aufmerksamkeit des Betrachtenden anziehen. Da zwei „schwache“ Farben wie Gelb und Orange weniger kontrastreich sind als z. B. Blau und Orange, dürfen weder zwei „schwache“ noch zwei „starke“ Farben direkt nebeneinander verwendet werden. Dieses Prinzip

der Vereinigung von Gegensätzen spiegelt die Basis der sozialen Weltordnung der Maasai wider. Das Ideal verbindet Ungleichheiten wie Mann und Frau, Tag und Nacht, rechte und linke Hand. Auch hier gibt es immer einen dominanten Teil. Jedoch sind beide Partner voneinander abhängig, sie ergänzen sich und bilden ein Ganzes (z.B. die Aufgabenverteilung zwischen Mann und Frau). wkm: Gerade die Maasai sind zumindest hier in Deutschland durch zahlreiche Romane und Filme bekannt – sicherlich tragen dieser Bekanntheitsgrad und das vermittelte Bild dazu bei, Kenia oder Tansania auch als touristische Orte zu vermarkten. Welche Rolle spielt denn der Tourismus heute vor Ort? fg: Das heutige Bild der Maasai in der westlichen Welt stützt sich häufig auf die als traditionell wahrgenommene (halb-)nomadische pastorale Lebensweise dieser Gruppe. Die Maasai hielten Rinder, Ziegen und Schafe und lebten von deren Produkten. Im Laufe der Zeit passten sie sich, wie auch andere Gesellschaften, sozialen, politischen und klimatischen Veränderungen an und fanden neue Wege der Repräsentation und Erschließung neuer Einnahmequellen. In den letzten Jahrzehnten ist der Tourismus als neuer Wirtschaftszweig in Kenia und Tansania stark gewachsen. Ein Weg für die Maasai, dies zu nutzen, ist die Herstellung von Perlenschmuck nicht mehr ausschließlich für Familienmitglieder oder Freund*innen sondern auch für den Verkauf. Die stereotyp-behaftete Popularität als „typische afrikanische Gruppe“, auch durch Bücher und Filme gefördert, führte zu einer erhöhten Nachfrage des Maasai-Schmucks als beliebtes Souvenir. Diese Bekanntheit wussten die Maasai zu nutzen. Der anhaltende Verkaufserfolg der Perlenornamente führte zur Ausweitung dieses Wirtschaftszweiges, vor allem in den Städten. Der Schmuck verlor teilweise an sozialer wie persönlicher Bedeutung und orientierte sich stärker an den Präferenzen des Marktes in Bezug auf das Design. Der Schmuck wird heute oftmals nur zu bestimmten Anlässen oder sogar aus rein modischen Gründen getragen. Dennoch sind die definierten Farbsets weiterhin bekannt. Gleichzeitig bietet der Verkauf eine Möglichkeit größerer Unabhängigkeit für Maasai-Frauen, da sie es sind, die den Schmuck herstellen. Durch den Verkauf des Schmucks erhalten diese Frauen ein eigenes Einkommen und dadurch mehr Autonomie.

weltkulturen museum: Frauke, you’re a research assistant in the Africa department. What are you working on at the moment? frauke gathof: As a research assistant, I work in various sections of the museum. In addition to looking after the Africa collection, I research topics for upcoming exhibitions and current projects. Right now I’m primarily concerned with the exhibition project ‘Invisible Inventories: Questioning Kenyan Collections in Western Museums’, which is part of the International Inventories Programme. This is a cooperative project involving artists from Kenya and Europe, the Nairobi National Museum and the Rautenstrauch-Joest-Museum in Cologne, exploring the issue of collections of Kenyan objects in museums in the Global North. As well as setting up a database, the exhibition in the three participating museums are pivotal for ensuring that the issue really comes to the fore and is accessible for the general public. Here at the Weltkulturen Museum, we – the Africa curator Leonie Neumann and I – have researched the provenance of selected objects in our collection. These included Swahili jewellery, a special kanga, and a Maasai shield. Moreover, there are examples of Maasai jewellery in the Frankfurt collection.

These will be going on show in the exhibition ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass’, providing the perfect opportunity for me to do some research on them too. wkm: And what did you find particularly interesting while researching beaded jewellery for the exhibition ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass’? fg: Maasai beaded jewellery has many different facets and histories, that is what makes the objects so fascinating. One interesting thing is that the selection and arrangement of the colours for a decorative piece, as well as the ornaments as a whole, reveal various characteristics of the wearer – such as the region where they come from, their kinship relation, their social status, sex, age, and much more. Each Maasai sub-group has its own preferences for colour and design, and certain ornaments are only worn by people in a particular age group, or by married women, or women whose son is a ilmurran (warrior).

This makes it possible for other Maasai to interpret the wearer’s social status and their belonging to a certain group. They’re social objects rather than fashion items. At the same time, the arrangement and combination of colours is traditionally subject to very strict rules. The fact that each section has particular preferences doesn’t mean that there is complete freedom to select the colours. The other exciting aspect is the history of

the beads: today images of Maasai men and women adorned with beaded jewellery are widespread in many parts of the world. These ornaments made of small, colourful glass beads are regarded as ‘typically’ Maasai. And it is true that they are an important part of material culture and a key means of identification. However, beaded jewellery only became prominent in the early 20th century. Large quantities of mainly European exports were shipped to East Africa, where they were integrated into local trade. While glass beads, predominantly from India and Venice, had previously been traded in East Africa, they were extremely expensive. Consequently, the Maasai tended to use metal beads for their jewellery. Metal jewellery was, however, much less expressive than the later beaded jewellery. Paintings on warriors’ shields became a powerful means of identification instead, making it possible to distinguish someone’s regional and family background as well as their social status.

But around the turn of the century, the colonial governments – this was Great Britain for Kenya, and Germany for Tanzania – ordered the entire population to disarm. Consequently, shields were no longer permitted to be carried in public, and so the Maasai sought a new way of identifying themselves to others.

Glass beads were popular around that time, and their low price made them accessible to a wide market. And so the Maasai integrated them into their material culture and injected them with new meanings. wkm: Let’s go back to colour, which is the main theme of this edition. The colours and the way in which they are arranged are subject to a particular order. Can you tell us something about that? fg: The Maasai mainly use the colours yellow, green, red, black, blue, white and orange for their beaded jewellery. Specific colour sets form the basis for the combination of colours on an ornament. They determine which colours can be used, and in which order. In addition to the classical combination of white, red and black/ blue, there are generally several pairs of colours in each set. These comprise a ‘strong’ colour (red, black or blue) and a ‘weak’ one. The aim here is to produce maximum contrast, which draw the viewer’s attention. As two ‘weak’ colours such as yellow and orange have less contrast than blue and orange, for example, neither two ‘weak’ colours nor two ‘strong’ ones may be placed directly adjacent to each other. This principle of unifying opposites reflects basic notions of how the Maasai order the world in social terms. Ideally, there is a link between imbal-

ances such as man and woman, day and night, the right hand and left hand. Here too, one part is always dominant. Yet both partners are dependent on each other; they supplement each other and form a whole (for instance, in the way tasks are divided between men and women). wkm: The Maasai are well known, at least here in Germany, from numerous novels and films – no doubt this familiarity and the image thereby conveyed has contributed to Kenya and Tanzania being marketed as tourist destinations. What role does tourism play there today? fg: The contemporary image of the Maasai in the Western world frequently relies on perceptions of the group’s supposedly traditional (semi-)nomadic pastoral way of life. The Maasai farmed cattle, goats and sheep and lived from their products.

Over time, just like other societies they adapted to social, political and climatic changes and found new ways of representing themselves and developing new sources of income. In recent decades tourism has snowballed as a new economic sector in Kenya and Tanzania. One way for the Maasai to make the most of this is by producing beaded jewellery not just for family members or friends, but also as items for sale. The stereotypical popularity of the Maasai as a ‘typical African group’, which is enhanced by books and films, has led to a huge demand for Maasai jewellery as a popular souvenir – and the Maasai knew how to exploit this familiarity. The sustained commercial success of these beaded ornaments has led to an expansion of the economic sector as a whole, particularly in the cities. To some extent, the jewellery has lost its social and personal significance and its design has become more closely aligned with market preferences. Today, the jewellery is often only worn for specific occasions or purely as fashion. Nonetheless, people still know about the defined colour sets. At the same time, selling the jewellery offers Maasai women – who make the items – a greater degree of independence. By selling their jewellery these women receive their own income and hence greater autonomy. wkm: Thanks, Frauke

LICHT UND SCHATTEN – WIE FARBEN VERBLASSEN/ LIGHT AND SHADE – HOW COLOURS FADE „Erst beim Öffnen der Tasche erlebt man sein blaues Wunder“

Licht ist schon faszinierend. Einerseits ist es essenziell, damit der Mensch überhaupt Farben sehen kann, andererseits hat es auch die Energie Farben zu zerstören. So scheint mit einer Tasche aus Afrika auf den ersten Blick alles in Ordnung zu sein. Sie wurde aus braunem Leder hergestellt und mit bunten Stickereien verziert. Erst beim Öffnen der Tasche erlebt man sein blaues (oder vielmehr rotes) Wunder: Unter der Abdeckung ist das Leder leuchtend rot. Das gesamte braune Leder war einmal rot gefärbt. Diese Färbung ist aber durch den Lichteinfluss im Laufe der Zeit verloren gegangen und blieb nur in verdeckten – lichtgeschützten – Bereichen erhalten. Aber wie konnte es dazu kommen? Grundlegend hierfür sind Lichtwellen, die auch das Prinzip des Sehens bestimmen. Das sichtbare Licht trifft dabei in unterschiedlichen Wellenlängen auf eine Oberfläche und je nachdem welche Wellenlängen reflektiert werden, erscheint vor unserem Auge eine bestimmte Farbe. In diesem Fall absorbiert das rote Leder Strahlen von jeder Wellenlänge, mit Ausnahme derer, die der Farbe Rot entsprechen. Diese Wellen werden reflektiert und vom Auge als Rot wahrgenommen.

Wenn ein Gegenstand weiß ist, bedeutet das, dass er das gesamte Licht reflektiert hat. Schwarze Gegenstände hingegen absorbieren alle Wellenlängen des sichtbaren Lichts. Bei der Zerstörung von Farben spielen die unterschiedlichen Wellenlängen eine wichtige Rolle. Kurzwellige Strahlung (unsichtbare UV-Strahlung und violettes Licht) ist energiereich und daher schädigender als langwellige Strahlung (unsichtbare Infrarot-Strahlung und rotes Licht).

Daher sind von der Zerstörung durch Licht vor allem die Farben betroffen, die das schwächere rote Licht reflektieren und das energiereiche violette Licht absorbieren. Deshalb bleicht auch zuerst Rot und Grün und zuletzt Blau aus. Bei der ehemals roten Tasche hat ebendiese Energie zu einer Anregung der roten Farbstoffmo-

leküle geführt. Diese konnten dadurch chemische Reaktionen mit Substanzen aus der Luft eingehen. Dabei wurden chemische Bindungen in den Farbstoffmolekülen zerstört und deren ganze Struktur verändert, sodass vornehmlich Stoffe entstanden sind, die ihre Fähigkeit verloren haben, Licht sowohl zu absorbieren als auch zu reflektieren und uns daher transparent erscheinen. Generell sind Lichtschäden am Beginn der Beleuchtung eines Gegenstandes deutlich größer und nehmen mit fortschreitender Beleuchtung ab. Gefährdet sind deswegen v. a. Objekte, die noch nie ausgestellt wurden. Hierunter fallen beispielsweise auch Buchmalereien, da sie immer unbelichtet und damit geschützt sind, wenn das Buch geschlossen ist. Wird so eine Malerei ausgestellt, ist die Gefahr von Lichtschäden sehr groß. Gleiches gilt für die afrikanische Ledertasche: Würde sie geöffnet ausgestellt werden, wäre eine Veränderung der letzten roten Farbbereiche in kurzer Zeit zu erwarten. Da es nicht möglich ist, mit restauratorischen und konservatorischen Mitteln die ursprüngliche Farbgebung eines ausgebleichten Objektes wiederherzustellen, ist es Aufgabe von Restaurator*innen, durch geeignete Maßnahmen eine Lichtschädigung der Objekte von vornherein zu verhindern.

Light is undoubtedly fascinating. On the one hand it is a prerequisite for people being able to see colour, yet it also has the power to destroy those colours. A bag from Africa, for example, seems completely fine at first glance.

Made of brown leather, it is decorated with colourful embroidery. Only upon opening the bag do you discover its true glory – for under the flap the leather is a bright red. In fact, the brown leather was once dyed red all over. Over the course of time this coloration has faded away due to the effects of light, remaining intact only in concealed areas which are protected from brightness. But how did that happen? Fundamental to this process are light waves, which also govern the principle of how we see. Visible light hits a surface at various wavelengths and, depending on which wave lengths are reflected, appears in front of our eyes as a particular colour. In this case, the red leather absorbs rays from every wavelength apart from those that correspond to the colour red. These waves are reflected and perceived as red by our eyes. If an object is white, it must have reflected all the visible light. Black objects, by contrast, absorb all the wavelengths of visible light. The various wavelengths play a key role in destroying colours too. Short-wave radiation (invisible ultraviolet radiation and violet light) is high in energy and thus more damaging than long-wave radiation (invisible infrared radiation and red light). This means that the destruction wrought by light primarily affects colours that reflect the weaker red light and absorb the higher energy violet light. For this reason, red and green fade first, with blue being affected last of all. In the case of this once red bag, this energy has led to the molecules of red dye becoming excited and entering into a chemical reaction with substances in the air. In the process, chemical bonds in the molecules of dye are destroyed and the entire structure is changed, primarily producing

materials which have lost their capacity to absorb or reflect light, and which thus appear transparent to us. Generally speaking, light damage is much more significant when an object is first subjected to light, and as the exposure continues the danger decreases. For this reason, objects which have never been displayed are at most risk. These include book illuminations, for example, which are always protected from the light when the book is closed. If an illumination is placed on show, the danger of being damaged by light is extremely high. The same is true with this African leather bag: if it were left open when placed on display, we would expect the final remaining sections of red to change very quickly. As it is impossible to recreate the original colouration of a faded object through restoration and conservation techniques, conservators are obliged to take suitable steps which would prevent an object becoming damaged from light in the first place.

mehrere dieser werke sind derzeit in der ausstellung „grüner himmel, blaues gras“ zu sehen – gemeinsam mit den sago-palmblattmalereien, die eike haberland 1961 in avim sammelte. fidelis apot, ein künstler aus avim, verbindet gewissermassen die beiden sammlungen, da er 1961 wie 2019 an den künstlerischen prozessen beteiligt war. wir haben tomi bartole einige fragen zu seinem forschungsaufenthalt gestellt. weltkulturen museum: Du hast zur Malerei aus Avim in PapuaNeuguinea geforscht. Wie bist du zu diesem Thema gekommen? tomi bartole: Mein Interesse für die Malereien erwachte, nachdem ich erfahren hatte, dass die beiden verwendeten Hauptformen,– die runde Form, die manga heißt, und die spi-

ralförmige namens manganem –, zugleich Konzepte darstellen, mit denen die Menschen von Avim ihre Welt und sich selbst vorstellen. Ich bat die Künstler, diese Werke zu malen, um diese beiden Konzepte zu beleuchten. wkm: Wie gestaltete sich die Zusammenarbeit mit den Künstlern vor Ort? Und kannst du uns etwas dazu sagen, wie die Arbeiten, die in der Ausstellung zu sehen sind, angefertigt wurden? tb: Wir alle haben die Arbeit an diesem Projekt genossen.

Während die Künstler über die verschiedenen Motive gesprochen und sie gemalt haben, habe ich jeden Schritt des Prozesses über Fotografien, Videos, Notizen und Audiomitschnitte der Diskussionen dokumentiert. Der hochrespektierte Sebastian Katuk, der als Hüter des traditionellen Wissens gilt, wies den

Künstlern die verschiedenen Motive zu, die gemalt werden sollten. Sein Verhältnis zu den Künstlern musste aber immer wieder ausgehandelt werden, im Besprechen der Motive wie auch durch praktische Hilfestellung bei der Ausführung. wkm: Worum geht es in den Malereien? tb: In den Malereien geht es um zwei Mythen, die davon sprechen, wie die Menschen erschaffen wurden, wie sie die Region zu besiedeln begannen und wie das heilige Wissen des Männerhauses, wo die Initiationsriten stattfanden, nach Avim gebracht wurde. Die Darstellungen sind immer zweideutig. Auf einem Bild zum Beispiel ist ein Fisch zu sehen, der zugleich ein Geistwesen ist, dessen wahre Form die menschliche Frau ist. Auch einfache Objekte wie Aufhängehaken stellen Geister dar, die moralische Prinzipien verkörpern. Die Werke sind also le-

im jahr 2019 reiste tomi bartole in das dorf avim in der provinz east sepik in papua-neuguinea. nachdem er sich dort bereits 2013–2014 für eine ethnologische feldforschung aufgehalten hatte, wollte er seine forschungen zu politik und religion vertiefen. als neuer schwerpunkt kam die auseinandersetzung mit kunst hinzu: bartole kehrte mit 18 malereien auf papier, die er bei elf künstlern vor ort in auftrag gegeben hatte, nach europa zurück […]

bendiges Zeugnis davon, dass es die Aufgabe der Künstler ist, die Geister zu erschaffen, die die Kosmologie von Avim bevölkern. wkm: Lass uns über Farbe sprechen: Könntest du etwas zur Bedeutung der Farbe Rot sagen? Sie bildet ja die Grundierung aller Bilder … tb: Die Farbe Rot fungiert als Hintergrund, aus dem eine Vielzahl lebendiger Motive hervortritt. Die Künstler von Avim selbst stellten diese Analogie her zwischen ihrer Verwendung der Farbe Rot und der Geschichte davon, wie der Geist Api sein peniles Blut der Schöpfungsmischung hinzufügte, aus der er die Menschen erschuf. Rot und Blut sind die Grundsubstanzen, aus denen alles erschaffen wird, Menschen wie Geister. wkm: Gibt es ein Motiv, das dich besonders beeindruckt hat?

TB: Ich mag Kinin Kumnya sehr, die „Mutter der Fische“.

Diese Malerei aus dem Jahr 1961 stammt von Fidelis Apot, dem einzigen überlebenden Künstler dieser Zeit, der auch 2019 noch malte. Die Mutter ist ein Geistwesen, das die Menschen als Fisch sehen, doch alle Künstler aus Avim wissen, dass es sich in Wahrheit um eine menschliche Frau handelt. Nur Verrückte, die allen Verstand verloren haben, können die wahre Form des Geistwesens erkennen. Meiner Ansicht nach wirft das die Frage auf, ob auch Geistern die Menschen als Fische erscheinen. wkm: Was hat sich für die Bevölkerung Avims und ihre Malerei im Zeitraum zwischen Haberlands Forschung und deinem Aufenthalt verändert? Und wie würdest du die Veränderungen erklären? tb: Zweifellos hat sich seitdem viel verändert, wobei ein paar Entwicklungen durchaus überraschen. Ich möchte ein Beispiel geben. In den 1960er Jahren kamen erstmals katholische Missionare in die Gegend, heute ist der Katholizismus fest verankert. Die neue Religion hat den Niedergang des Kults um das Männerhaus sowie um Geister und Initiationsriten direkt beeinflusst. Das Repertoire gemalter Motive hat sich allerdings im Zeitraum von 1961–2019 um ein Drittel erhöht – also nicht verringert, womit man eigentlich hätte rechnen können. wkm: Du bist Co-Kurator der Ausstellung „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras“. Wie kam es zur Zusammenarbeit? tb: Christian Kaufmann, Anthropologe und Kurator mit einem immensen Wissen über den Sepik, erzählte mir von den Malereien aus Avim am Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt.

Als ich Frankfurt besuchte, kontaktierte ich Matthias Claudius Hofmann, Kustos des Sammlungsbereichs Ozeanien, der mir einige der Malereien aus Haberlands Sammlung zeigte. Ein paar

Monate später lud mich Matthias dazu ein, an der Ausstellung mitzuarbeiten. Wenn ich ehrlich bin, hatte ich die ganze Zeit auf diese Einladung gehofft. wkm: Wie fühlt es sich für die Künstler an, ihre Werke in einer Ausstellung am Weltkulturen Museum zu wissen? Und wie für dich selbst? tb: Ich habe erst relativ kürzlich mit Sebastian Katuk telefoniert. Als Hüter des traditionellen Wissens und Hauptkünstler freute er sich sehr über die großartigen Neuigkeiten. Ich kann mir gut vorstellen, dass auch all die anderen Künstler äußerst stolz sind. Ich bin sehr glücklich, dass die Werke jetzt in Frankfurt sind, denn sie gehören, wie ich hinzufügen möchte, mit denjenigen von 1961 zusammen. Die beiden Serien sind lebendiges Zeugnis der Beziehungen zwischen Avim und dem Museum. Tatsächlich war es auch so, dass die Malereien von 2019 mithilfe von Fotos der Malereien aus dem Jahr 1961 angefertigt wurden. Eva Raabe, die heutige Direktorin des Weltkulturen Museums, hatte die Fotos an die inzwischen verstorbene und für eine NGO tätige Ethnologin Nancy Sullivan vermittelt. 2011 war Eva, die damalige Kustodin des Sammlungsbereichs Ozeanien, von Barry Craig kontaktiert worden, dem Kurator am South Australian Museum. Er unterstützte Nancy bei der Forschung und wusste von der Sammlung in Frankfurt.

Nachdem diese Verbindung hergestellt war, fanden die Fotos ihren Weg von Frankfurt nach Avim. wkm: Vielen Dank, Tomi!

PAINTERS OF THE WESTERN PACIFIC in 2019, tomi bartole travelled to avim, a village in the east sepik province of papua new guinea. bartole had already conducted anthropological research in avim between 2013 and 2014, and five years later he returned there to further his research on politics and religion. on the second field trip, however, bartole also focused on avim art, returning to europe with 18 paintings on paper, which he had commissioned from 11 local artists. many of these paintings are currently on show in the exhibition ‘green sky, blue grass’, shown in conjunction with the sago palm sheath paintings that eike haberland collected in avim in 1961. the living link between the two collections of paintings is avim artist fidelis apot, who was involved with the painting processes both in 1961 and in 2019. we met up with tomi bartole and interviewed him about his research trip.

weltkulturen museum: You conducted research on the paintings in Avim, Papua New Guinea. How did you come to this topic? tomi bartole: I became interested in the paintings once I learned that the two main forms employed – the round shape called manga and the spiral shape called manganem – were also two concepts through which Avim people conceptualise their world and themselves. I asked the artists to paint the works because I wanted to discuss these two concepts. wkm: What was it like working with the artists in Avim?

And can you tell us something about how the works in the exhibition were produced? tb: We all enjoyed working on this project. While the artists discussed the various motifs and painted them, I documented every step of this process by way of taking photos, videos, writing down my observations and recording discussions. Sebastian Katuk, a respected man and today’s guardian of traditional knowledge, divided up the motifs to be painted amongst the artists. However, his role had to be constantly renegotiated via discussions about the motifs as well as practical help with the painting. wkm: What are the paintings about? tb: The paintings are about two myths that recount how humans were created, how they inhabited today’s lands and how the sacred knowledge of the men’s house, where initiations used to take place, was brought to Avim. The paintings’ representations are always ambiguous. One painting, for example, offers the viewer a fish, which is also a spirit whose true form, however, is that of a female human. Simple objects such as suspension hooks are also spirits that embody moral principles.

Avim paintings are living testament to the fact that it is the artists’ task to create the spirits that inhabit Avim cosmology.

wkm: Let’s talk about colour: could you say something about the meaning of the colour red? It does form the basis of the paintings . tb: The colour red functions as a background upon which a variety of motifs acquire life. Avim artists themselves made the analogy between painting with the colour red and the spirit Api letting his penile blood into the creation pot from which he created humans. Red and blood are the basic substances from which everything is made, humans and spirits alike. wkm: Is there a motif that particularly impressed you? tb: I really like Kinin Kumnya, or the ‘Mother of Fish’. The 1961 painting of it was created by Fidelis Apot, the only surviving artist from that period who was also still painting in 2019. The Mother is a spirit that humans see as a fish, but all Avim artist know very well that in reality she is a female human. Only mad people who have lost all reason can see the spirit for what she really is. In my opinion, this motif begs the question about whether spirits too might see humans as fish. wkm: What has changed for the Avim inhabitants and their painting between Haberland’s first research in the 1960s and your studies? How do you explain these changes? tb: Many things have undoubtedly changed since then, but perhaps some of the changes are surprising. For example, in the 1960s the first Catholic missionaries established their presence in the area and today Catholicism has been fully embraced. The new religion has had a direct influence on the demise of the cult of the men’s house, spirits and initiations. However, the repertoire of the painted motifs had increased by a third in 2019 compared to 1961, rather than diminishing, as one would normally assume. wkm: You are co-curator of the exhibition ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass’. How did this collaboration come about?

tb: Christian Kaufmann, an anthropologist and curator with an immense knowledge of the Sepik, told me about the Avim paintings at the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt. When I was visiting Frankfurt I contacted Matthias Claudius Hofmann, the curator of the Oceania collection, and he showed me a part of the paintings from Haberland’s collection. After a couple of months, Matthias invited me to help with the exhibition. To tell you the truth, I was secretly hoping for that invitation to arrive all along. wkm: What is it like for the artists (and for you), having their works on show at the Weltkulturen Museum? tb: I spoke with Sebastian Katuk on the phone quite recently. As the guardian of traditional knowledge and lead artist, he was thrilled to hear about the good news. I can well imagine all the other artists being extremely proud of the exhibition. I am extremely happy that the paintings are now in Frankfurt, where, I might add, they belong with the paintings from 1961. Both series of painting are a living testament to the relationship between Avim and the museum. In fact, in 2019 the Avim artists created their paintings with the help of photos of the 1961 paintings. Furthermore, it was Eva Raabe, today’s director of the Weltkulturen Museum, who equipped the late Nancy Sullivan, an NGO anthropologist working in Avim, with the photos. In 2011 Eva, at the time still curator of the Oceania collection, had been contacted by Barry Craig, curator at the South Australian Museum who helped Nancy with her research and knew about the Frankfurt collection. Once this connection was made the photos found their way from Frankfurt to Avim. wkm: Thank you very much, Tomi!

VERBORGENER BLICKFANG/ A HIDDEN EYE-CATCHER eva ch. raabe über den giebel eines kulthauses der abelam/ eva ch. raabe on the gable of an abelam cult house

Kulthäuser mit hoch aufragenden Giebelfronten dienen den Abelam in Papua-Neuguinea (Maprik-Hügelland, Sepik-Region) zur Aufbewahrung sakraler Bildwerke, die mit dem Anbau des Hauptnahrungsmittels, der Knollenfrucht Yams, in Verbindung stehen. Die Giebelflächen bestehen aus zusammengenähten Scheiden von Sagopalmblättern und werden von den Männern des jeweiligen Dorfes gemeinsam unter der Anleitung der ältesten versierten Maler mit Erdfarben bemalt. Die Ahnen- und Yamsgeister, deren Gesichter in den Malereien zweidimensional dargestellt sind, finden sich verborgen im Inneren des Kulthauses als Schnitzereien. In dieser plastischen Darstellung dürfen sie nur von initiierten Männern und aktiven Yamspflanzern gesehen werden. Diese Giebelmalereien dokumentieren auf eindrucksvolle Weise Kreativität, Kunstfertigkeit und Farbgefühl der Abelam-Maler. In der Ethnologie immer wieder beschrieben, wurde diese Malerei schließlich auch im westlich geprägten Kunstbetrieb als eigene zeitgenössische Kunstgattung Papua-Neuguineas gewürdigt. Zur Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, einem bedeutenden Kunstereignis im australischen Brisbane, wurde 2012 eine Gruppe von Abelam-Künstlern, die Brikiti Cultural Group, eingeladen, um einen Giebel aus modernen Materialien herzustellen und ihre Malkunst zu demonstrieren und zu erläutern.

Bereits 1961 erwarben Meinhard Schuster und Eike Haberland während einer von der Stadt Frankfurt finanzierten Sammelreise an den Sepik und dessen Nebenflüsse einen solchen Kulthausgiebel, wahrscheinlich als Auftragsarbeit. Beide Ethnologen sahen in der großflächigen Malerei mit den farbintensiven Ornamenten einen besonderen Blickfang für eine zukünftige Frankfurter Dauerausstellung. In den 1960er Jahren besaß das im Krieg zerstörte Museum noch kein eigenes Ausstellungshaus, die Sammlungen waren der Öffentlichkeit unzugänglich in Magazinen untergebracht und bereits damals wurde ein Museumsneubau in Aussicht gestellt, aber nicht realisiert. Daran hat sich bis heute nichts geändert. Die Flächen der zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre bezogenen Ausstellungsvilla am Schaumainkai sind ohne Klimatisierung für Dauerausstellungen ungeeignet, für Großobjekte und damit auch für den Giebel sind sie außerdem zu niedrig. So wurde das Kunstwerk tatsächlich nur einmal 1987 in der Kunsthalle Schirn in der Ausstellung „Neuguinea – Nutzung und Deutung der Umwelt“ gezeigt. 2020 wurde es während der Vorbereitungen zu „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras“ zum Fotografieren aus dem Magazin geholt, restauriert und kurz im Freien aufgestellt. Ein großer Aufwand! Aber mit den Fotos können wir wenigstens einen flüchtigen Eindruck von der sinnlichen Wirkung dieser Großmalerei vermitteln. Leider musste der Giebel danach sofort wieder ins schützende Magazin zurück und bleibt nun wieder für Jahre allen Blicken entzogen.

Cult houses with towering gable fronts are used by the Abelam – who come from the mountainous Maprik district in the Sepik region of New Guinea – to store sacred images that are associated with growing yams, the tuber which is their staple food. The front of the gable consists of sago palm leaf sheaths which have been sewn together and painted with earth tones by the men of the village, working communally under the supervision of the oldest experienced painter.

The faces of the spirits of ancestors and yams are represented two-dimensionally in the paintings, while the actual spirits are concealed as carvings inside the cult houses. Only initiated men and active yam planters are permitted to see this sculptural depiction. These paintings provide an impressive record of the Abelam painters’ creativity, artistic skill and feeling for colour. The gables have frequently been described in ethnological writings, to be finally recognised by the western-influenced art world as a characteristic form of contemporary Papua-New Guinean art. In 2012, a group of Abelam artists called the Brikiti Cultural Group was invited to the Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary Art, a major art event in Brisbane, Australia, to produce a gable from modern materials and thereby demonstrate and explain their pictorial art. It was back in 1961 that Meinhard Schuster and Eike Haberland travelled to the Sepik and its tributaries on a collecting trip financed by the city of Frankfurt. While there they acquired one of these cult house gables, probably a commissioned piece. Both ethnologists believed that this large-format painting with its intensely colourful ornamentation would be an eye-catching addition to a future permanent exhibition in Frankfurt. In the 1960s the museum, which had been destroyed in World War II, did not yet have its own exhibition space. A new museum building had been promised but not yet realised, and in the meantime the collections were in storage, where they could not be accessed by the general public. Even today, that situation has not changed. In the early 1970s the museum moved into the exhibition villa on Schaumainkai, but the display areas here have no air conditioning, which makes them unsuitable for permanent exhibitions, and in any case the ceilings are too low for large objects such as the gable. Consequently, this work of art has only ever been displayed once, in 1987 for the exhibition on New Guinea at the city’s Kunsthalle Schirn. During the preparations for ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass’ in 2020, it was taken out of storage so that it could be photographed, restored and then erected outdoors for a brief period. All in all it was a huge effort! But the photos will at least give us a fleeting impression of the impact that these massive paintings have on our senses. Sadly, the gable then had to be swiftly returned to its protective storage, where it will remain for years to come, out of view.

stephanie endter: Die Ausstellung ist nicht aus dem Nichts heraus entstanden, sondern es gab eine lange Vorlaufzeit. Viele Gespräche, Projekte, Workshops und auch die Publikation „Das Museum verlernen? Kolonialität und Vermittlung in ethnologischen Museen“, die im Rahmen von Traces1 entstanden ist, haben diese Ausstellung vorbereitet. Der rassistisch motivierte Anschlag in Hanau und darauffolgende Diskussionen waren auch sehr präsent. Ende Februar 2020 haben wir uns dazu entschieden, eine Ausstellung mit einem antirassistischen Fokus im Labor vorzuschlagen, und die Direktorin Eva Raabe stimmte dem zu. Die

Ausstellung sollte mit möglichst vielen Kooperationspartner*innen entstehen und wir wollten die Themen mit Schüler*innen diskutieren und erarbeiten und die Ergebnisse dieses Forschungsprozesses in der Laborausstellung zeigen. Doch dann kam der erste Lock-Down und die Ausgangslage hat sich komplett geändert. julia albrecht: Ja, das hat leider dazu geführt, dass wir unsere Arbeitsweise grundsätzlich verändern mussten. Die Kooperationsmöglichkeiten im Realen waren jetzt eingeschränkt, an Workshops mit Schulklassen war nicht mehr zu denken. se: Wir sind von unserem Vorhaben, mit vielen Kooperationspartner*innen zu arbeiten, auf ein Ausstellungskonzept umgeschwenkt, das wir mit unseren internen Möglichkeiten als Team der Bildung und Vermittlung bewerkstelligen können. Und damit hat sich auch der Fokus etwas verändert. Von unserer ursprünglichen Idee ist aber geblieben, dass BIPoC-Perspektiven2 wahrgenommen und sichtbar werden sollen. ja: Genau – da wir das Konzept jetzt anpassen mussten, haben wir uns darauf konzentriert, wie wir unsere dekolonialen Vermittlungsprozesse in ein Ausstellungsformat bringen können. se: Ausgangspunkt waren die Workshops „Was macht das hier?“ und „Störbilder“, die wir schon seit ein paar Jahren anbieten. Zentral war hierbei eine Frage, die uns schon sehr lange in der Vermittlungsarbeit begleitet, nämlich welche Referenzen auf die koloniale Vergangenheit wir brauchen und welche Bilder wir zeigen, wissend, dass wir Gefahr laufen, die Gewalt in diesen Bildern zu wiederholen und Besucher*innen des Museums möglicherweise zu verletzen. Wir haben entschieden, uns in der Ausstellung nicht nur auf die Vergangenheit zu konzentrieren, sondern Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft zusammenbringen und einen empowernden Raum zu schaffen. Ein Moment war hier für mich sehr augenöffnend.

Sehr früh war klar, dass wir in Absprache mit glokal e.V. aus dem Online-Tool „Connecting the Dots. Lernen aus Geschichte(n) zu Unterdrückung und Widerstand“ Zitate für den Treppenaufgang verwenden wollen. Und ursprünglich hatten wir jeweils hegemoniale und widerständige Zitate ausgewählt, die sich in ihren Aussagen entgegenstanden. Beim Lesen hatten wir das Gefühl, dass wir manche der hegemonialen Aussagen gar nicht mehr lesen oder so prominent ausgestellt sehen wollen und daraufhin haben wir sie alle rausgenommen und hatten damit eine vollkommen andere Perspektive auf koloniale und postkoloniale Geschichte.

Das war für mich ein Schlüsselmoment auch für die anderen Themenbereiche in der Ausstellung. Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hast du auch den neuen Titel „Hidden in Plain Sight“ reingebracht. Der hat all unsere Themen zusammengefasst. ja: Für mich geht es um counter- oder oppositionelles Wissen. Viele widerständige Perspektiven oder Momente des Widerstands zu der kolonialen Situation waren schon immer präsent, aber erst wenn der Blick anders gerichtet wird, kann diese Dynamik in den Fokus gerückt werden. Es ging uns von Anfang an darum, empowernde und widerständige Momente zu zeigen und dann gab es die Frage, welche

Objekte in der Sammlung diesen Kriterien entsprechen könnten. Denn aus unserer Erfahrung bei dem Workshop „Störbilder“ hatten wir das Problem bei der Bildersuche, dass wir keine Beispiele für widerständige Bilder gefunden haben. Deswegen war die Frage: Wie und wo finden wir Bilder oder Objekte, die unser Vorhaben unterstützen könnten? Wenn ich mich richtig erinnere, hatten wir schon sehr früh an die geflochtenen Körbe der Künstlerin Shan Goshorn gedacht. Im Folgenden haben wir alle Kustod*innen gefragt, ob sie für unser Ausstellungskonzept passende Objekte in ihrer Sammlung sehen. Neben anderen Vorschlägen hat Vanessa von Gliszczynski, Kustodin Südostasien, uns auf die Bambusröhren aufmerksam gemacht, auf denen lokale Künstler*innen in figürlichen Szenen Begegnungen von Bewohner*innen Serams und Europäer*innen darstellen. Auch mit Lea Steinkampf, die in der Sammlung visuelle Anthropologie arbeitet, hat sich eine intensivere Zusammenarbeit ergeben. Sie beschäftigt sich mit der Verwendung von Sprache und Kategorisierung am Beispiel des Thesaurus der Sammlung. Ich hatte den Eindruck, dass Sprache und ihre Wirkmächtigkeit als Thema dir sehr wichtig ist. se: Ich fand es sehr spannend, als Alice Pawlik, Kustodin Visuelle Anthropologie, davon erzählte, dass sie gerade die Begriffe der Kategorien des Thesaurus bearbeitet, d.h. manche Begriffe ersatzlos streicht, manche Begriffe abwandelt oder auch neue hinzufügt. Ich finde, dass die Datenbank ein sehr machtvolles Instrument ist, die auch den Blick auf die Objekte, oder in diesem Fall die Bilder, beeinflusst und lenkt. Zudem habe ich mich viel mit der Macht der Sprache auseinandergesetzt, Sprache schafft Ausschlüsse. Gerade auch in einem ethnologischen Museum sind bestimmte Begriffe sehr aufgeladen. Beispielsweise „traditionell“ und „modern“. Dahinter stehen mitunter Ideen, die eine koloniale und hierarchisierende Tradition haben – im Sinne von Fortschritt und Entwicklung. Aber was ich an Sprache auch so spannend finde ist, dass sie wandelbar ist und dass sie fortwährend auch von Aktivist*innen herausgefordert wird und verändert werden kann.

Sprache kann auch neue Wirklichkeit(en) schaffen. Worüber wir im Zusammenhang mit den Objekten viel diskutiert haben war dann der Begriff der „Agency“. ja: Die Frage von Agency ist sehr wichtig, wenn auch nicht ohne Problem. Für mich ist es von Bedeutung, eine empowernde Geschichte mit zu erzählen und nicht nur eine Geschichte von Unterdrückung, obwohl diese massiv war und noch ist. Agency und Resilienz waren (und sind) immer vorhanden in den unterschiedlichen Formen von Widerstand aber häufig wurde diese Agency durch ein Narrativ von kolonialer Eroberung und westlicher Macht verdeckt. Mir war es ein großes Anliegen, in der Ausstellung einen Raum zu schaffen, in der die Stimmen hörbar werden, die vorher keinen Raum hatten. Gleichzeitig benötigt man Besucher*innen, die bereit sind, in ungewohnten Weisen zu schauen und zu hören, damit ein Dialog im Raum entstehen kann. Die Ausstellung bietet meiner Ansicht nach die Möglichkeit für neue Sichtweisen und Auseinandersetzungen. se: Wir haben auch zeitgenössische künst-

lerische Arbeiten für die Ausstellung ausgewählt. Leider hatten wir nicht das Budget, Künstler*innen einzuladen, um komplett neue Arbeiten im Rahmen der Ausstellung zu entwickeln, nichts desto trotz sind für mich die künstlerischen Arbeiten ein sehr wichtiger Teil der Ausstellung. Ich freue mich, dass wir in „Hidden in Plain Sight“ die Arbeiten der Künstler*innen FrauHerr Meko, Kitso Lelliott, Ema Tavola und Joana Tischkau zeigen werden. Wichtig für den Prozess waren auch die Gespräche mit unseren „critical friends“. Im September haben wir insgesamt sechs Personen zu zwei „kritischen Gesprächen“ eingeladen, die aus ganz unterschiedlichen Richtungen3 kommen.

Im Vorfeld hatten wir ihnen den Stand der Planung geschickt, zusammen mit Fragen, die uns beschäftigt haben. In den zweistündigen Gesprächen sind wir dann alle Themenfelder und Fragen durchgegangen. Insgesamt hat sich durch die Gespräche unsere Ausrichtung geschärft. ja: Es ging uns darum, dass die Ausstellung nicht nur unsere Perspektiven oder Blickwinkel hat, sondern dass diese nochmals reflektiert werden. Es war eine kritische Auseinandersetzung mit unserer eigenen Position im Museum und diese kritischen Gespräche sollten unsere Perspektiven und Blickpunkte schärfen und erweitern. Eine wichtige Frage dabei war: Haben wir unsere selbstgesteckten Ziele in der Ausstellungskonzeption erreicht?

Wir waren deswegen auf sehr widerständige Perspektiven in diesen Gesprächen gefasst und wir waren auch bereit, auf Kritik so weit wie möglich einzugehen. se: Ein Kritikpunkt aus den Gesprächen hat mich ziemlich beschäftigt und zwar, dass unser dekolonialer Ansatz vom Museum nach außen vermittelt wird, ohne aber Auswirkungen innerhalb der Institution zu haben. ja: Kritisiert wurde außerdem, dass eine antirassistische und dekoloniale Arbeit oft an die Bildung und Vermittlungsabteilung ausgelagert wird, statt die ganze Institution zu durchziehen. Von manchen wurde die Ausstellung daher grundsätzlich in Frage gestellt. se: Die Ausstellung entstand aus der Vermittlungsabteilung heraus und als Labor-Ausstellung hat sie im Vergleich zu Ausstellungen im Haupthaus weniger Budget, einen kleineren Zeitrahmen und es entsteht kein Katalog.

Es stellen sich Fragen wie, was bedeutet ein dekolonialer Ansatz für eine Institution wie das Weltkulturen Museum oder wie könnte ein institutionelles Statement dabei aussehen? Mit Sicherheit gibt es hierauf viele Antworten, aber ich bin davon überzeugt, dass durch die Ausstellung „Hidden in Plain Sight“ Räume für Diskussionen entstehen können, die möglicherweise Perspektivwechsel und Verschiebungen bewirken können. Dekoloniale Arbeit ist ein langfristiger Prozess, der aus vielen verschiedenen Strategien bestehen kann und mit vielen Akteur*innen gemeinsam geführt werden muss. ja: Die Ausstellung stellt einen aktiven Teil der dekolonialen Arbeit am Museum dar.

Ich würde hier auf eine systemische Ansicht zurückgreifen, d.h. eine Wirkung auf einen Teil kann das ganze System in Schwingung bringen. Und Bildung und Vermittlung ist nun mal ein wichtiger Teil vom System.

stephanie endter: The exhibition didn’t come out of nowhere; there was a long lead up. It grew out of many conversations, projects, workshops as well as through work on the publication ‘The Museum as a Site for Unlearning?

Coloniality and Education in Ethnographic Museums’, which was produced as part of the Traces 1 project. The racially motivated terror attack in Hanau and subsequent discussions were also very present. At the end of February 2020, we decided to propose an exhibition with an antiracist focus for the Labor, which the director Eva Raabe agreed to. The exhibition was to be developed with as many cooperation partners as possible; we wanted to discuss and work on the topics with students and show the results of this research process as part of the exhibition.

But then came the first lockdown and the situation changed completely. julia albrecht: Yes, unfortunately that meant that we had to fundamentally change our way of working. The opportunities for ‘live’ cooperation were now limited and school workshops were out of the question. se: We switched from our plan to work with numerous cooperation partners to an exhibition concept that we, the museum’s education team, were able to manage independently. Because of this, the focus also changed somewhat.

The one thing that did remain from our original idea, however, is that BIPoC2 perspectives should take centre stage and be made visible. ja: Exactly – since we had to adapt the concept, we focused on how to bring our decolonial education processes into an exhibition format. se: The workshops ‘Was macht das hier?’

(What’s that doing here?) and ‘Störbilder’ (Disruptive Images), which we’ve been conducting for a few years now, were the starting point.

Central to this was a question that has been linked to our education work for a while now, namely: which references to the colonial past do we need, and which images do we show, knowing that we run the risk of repeating the violence in these images and possibly triggering visitors in the museum. We decided not to focus only on the past in this exhibition, but to bring the past, present and future together in an effort to create an empowering space. One moment was very eye-opening for me. Very early on, it was clear that, in consultation with glokal e.V., we would use quotes from the online tool ‘Connecting the Dots: Lernen aus Geschichte(n) zu Unterdrückung und Widerstand’ (Connecting the Dots: Learning from Histories of Oppression and Resistance) in the stairwell.

Originally, we chose quotes that reflected both hegemonic perspectives and narratives of resistance, which were supposed to contradict each other. As we were going through them, we started to get the feeling that we didn’t want to be reading some of the hegemonic statements or see them displayed so prominently, and as a result we took them all out and turned towards a completely different perspective on colonial and postcolonial history. For me this was a key moment for the other thematic areas in the exhibition too. At this point you also brought in the new title ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’. This brought all our themes together. ja: For me, it’s about counter- or oppositional knowledge. Many opposing perspectives or moments of resistance to colonialism have

always been present, but it’s only when the gaze is redirected that these dynamics can be brought into focus. Right from the beginning we were interested in showing moments of empowerment and resistance, which led us to the question of which objects in the collection were able to meet these criteria. Our experience during the ‘Störbilder’ workshop showed us that we had a problem with the image search, in that it did not come up with any examples of images of resistance. The question then became: how and where can we find images or objects that could support our project? If I remember correctly, we had very early on thought of the woven baskets by the artist Shan Goshorn. After that, we asked all the curators if they had any objects in their collections that would fit with our exhibition concept. One suggestion came from the Southeast Asia curator, Vanessa von Gliszczynski, who drew our attention to the bamboo canes on which local artists depicted figurative scenes of encounters between the Seramese and Europeans. A close collaboration also developed with Lea Steinkampf, who works in the visual anthropology collection. She is working on the use of language and categorisation using the collection’s thesaurus as an example. I had the impression that language and its effectiveness is a very important topic for you. se: I was very excited when Alice Pawlik, our visual anthropology curator, told us that she is currently editing the category terms in the thesaurus; completely deleting some terms, modifying others, or adding new ones to the list. I think that the database is a very powerful tool, which also influences and directs how we view the objects, or in this case, the images. On top of that, I have been looking into the power of language, its exclusionary power. In an ethnographic museum certain terms are also highly charged: terms like ‘traditional’ and ‘modern’, for example. Hidden behind them are ideas taken from a colonial and hierarchising tradition – informed by notions such as progress and development. But what I also find so exciting about language is that it is able to transform and that, through the work of activists, it is constantly being challenged and can be changed.

Language can also create new realities. What we discussed a lot in connection with the objects was the concept of ‘agency’. ja: The question of agency is very important, but it’s not without problems. It is important to me to tell an empowering story and not just a story of oppression, even though this oppression was and still is severe. Agency and resilience were (and are) always present in different forms of resistance, but often this agency has been obscured by narratives of colonial conquest and Western power. It was very important to me to create a space in the exhibition where previously silenced voices could be heard. At the same time, you need visitors who are willing to look and listen in unfamiliar ways, so that a dialogue can develop in the space. In my opinion, the exhibition offers a chance for new perspectives and discussions. se: We also selected works by contemporary artists for the exhibition. Unfortunately, we did not have the budget to invite artists to develop completely new works for the exhibition, but nevertheless, for me these works are a very important part of the exhibition. I am very

pleased that in ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’ we will be showing the work of the artists FrauHerr Meko, Kitso Lelliott, Ema Tavola and Joana Tischkau.

Conversations with our ‘critical friends’ were also important to the process. In September, we invited a total of six people from very different backgrounds3 to two ‘critical conversations’. Before the discussions we sent them what we had developed by that point and some of the questions that were on our minds. In the two-hour discussions we went through all the topics and questions we had. Overall, these discussions ended up sharpening our focus. ja: It was important to us that the exhibition did not just convey our perspectives or points of view, but that these perspectives would then be reflected on. It was a critical examination of our own position in the museum, and these critical conversations were meant to sharpen and broaden our perspectives and viewpoints. An important question in this process was: have we achieved the goals we set ourselves in conceiving the exhibition? We were, therefore, prepared for very resistant perspectives in these conversations and we were also prepared to respond to criticism as far as possible. se: One point of criticism from these talks concerned me quite a bit, and that was that our decolonial approach can be communicated by the museum to the outside, but without having any internal impacts on the institution itself. ja: There was also criticism that anti-racist and decolonial work is often outsourced to the education department instead of permeating the whole institution. The exhibition was therefore put in question by some in a very fundamental way. se: The exhibition is produced by the education department, and as a Labor exhibition it has a smaller budget and a shorter timeframe compared to exhibitions in the main building, and there is also no catalogue. Questions come up, such as what does a decolonial approach mean for an institution like the Weltkulturen Museum or what could an institutional statement look like? There are certainly many answers to these questions, but I am convinced that the exhibition ‘Hidden in Plain Sight’can create spaces for discussion that could bring about shifts in perspective and real change.

Decolonial work is a long-term process that can consist of many different strategies, and it needs to be conducted together with many other actors. ja: The exhibition is an active part of decolonial work at the museum. I find a systemic view here useful: an effect on one part can make the whole system resonate. And education is an important part of the system.

BRIGITTA HAUSER-SCHÄUBLIN: LIFE IN LINES, PATTERNS AND COLOUR An Introductory Approach to Non-European Art, with a Case Study of the Abelam in Papua New Guinea.

Bereits seit den 1980er Jahren liegt einer der Schwerpunkte des Weltkulturen Museums in Frankfurt auf kunstethnologischer Arbeit. Als Berufsanfängerin, auf der Suche nach neuen Wegen der Kunstpräsentation und Kunstvermittlung, schien mir damals die Kunstethnologie mit Ausnahme weniger Studien von beschreibender Stilkunde nach Art europäischer Kunstgeschichte beherrscht. Doch auch die Schriften mit einer innerhalb der Ethnologie immer stärker werdenden kunstsoziologischen Herangehensweise empfand ich oft in einem Punkt als unbefriedigend: Zwar beschäftigten sie sich mit durchaus gewichtigen Themen wie dem Vorhandensein von künstlerischem Spezialistentum, mit geschlechtlicher Arbeitstrennung im Entstehungsprozess sowie mit der Einordnung von Kunst in Alltag oder Ritual, es fehlte jedoch bei vielen an detaillierter Analyse kulturimmanenter ästhetischer Prinzipien. Kulturell andere Kunstformen folgen eigenen Regeln, die nicht mit europäischer Kunsttheorie zu erklären sind. Museumsausstellungen, die außereuropäische Kunst präsentieren, haben aber in der Regel ein Publikum, das weitgehend von europäischer Kunst und Kultur geprägt ist. Wie kann man das, was sinnlich anspricht – Farben, Formen, kreative Kompositionen –, analysieren und für die europäische Rezeption verständlich vermitteln? Das 1989 erschienene Werk „Leben in Linie, Muster und Farbe“ der Ethnologin Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin gibt Antworten auf diese Frage. Die Autorin, die selbst ausgiebige Feldforschung bei den Abelam durchführte, entwirft in diesem Buch eine ganzheitliche Betrachtung der Kunst dieser Bevölkerungsgruppe, indem sie sich immer vor aller ethnografischen Beschreibung auf die kulturimmanenten ästhetischen Regeln und künstlerischen Aspekte konzentriert. Die Kunst der Abelam ist vor allem für die großen bemalten, aus Palmblattscheiden zusammengesetzten Giebelflächen ihrer hoch aufragenden Kulthäuser und bunt bemalte anthropomorphe Schnitzwerke aus Holz bekannt, doch auch Gegenstände aus anderen Materialien wie Flechtmasken, Netztaschen, Tongefäße und Knochendolche werden künstlerisch gestaltet. Die Autorin zeigt in jeder Hinsicht nachvollziehbar auf, wie diese unterschiedlichen Äußerungen künstlerischer Kreativität miteinander in Beziehung stehen. Besonders veranschaulicht werden ihre Ausführungen von einer Fülle von Fotos und Zeichnungen, die Grundelemente und Darstellungsprinzipien der Abelam-Kunst verdeutlichen. Das Buch ist eine didaktisch hervorragende Einführung in ein nicht-europäisches Kunstsystem und war mir zu Beginn meiner Museumslaufbahn gerade für die Auseinandersetzung mit der musealen Präsentation und Vermittlung außereuropäischer Kunst ein inspirierender Augenöffner. Vor diesem Hintergrund freut es mich besonders, dass wir Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin auch als Autorin für unsere Begleitpublikation zur Ausstellung „Grüner Himmel, Blaues Gras. Farben ordnen Welten“ gewinnen konnten. Kunstbegeisterten möchte ich empfehlen, nach dem Besuch unserer Ausstellung ihren Artikel zu lesen, um sich anschließend in ihr hier besprochenes Buch zu versenken. Ganz leidenschaftlich möchte ich diese Lektüre all denjenigen ans Herz legen, die sich mit Kunst und Ästhetik anderer Kulturen im Detail und mit Tiefgang auseinandersetzen wollen.

Since the 1980s, one of the focal points of the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt has been situated at the intersection of anthropology and art. Back then my career had just begun, and I was looking out for new ways of art presentation and art intermediation. At that time it seemed to me that apart from a few isolated studies, the anthropology of art was dominated by stylistic descriptions as it was common in European art history. But even publications that approached the matter from the perspective of a sociology of art – a path that was then becoming increasingly popular in ethnology – were, as far as I was concerned, unsatisfactory in one respect: while it was true that they dealt with undoubtedly weighty issues such as the presence of artistic specialisms, the division of labour according to the sexes in the creative process, and categorising art as part of everyday life or as ritual, many of them failed to provide a detailed analysis of the aesthetic principles which are an intrinsic part of culture. Forms of art which are culturally different follow their own rules, and these cannot be explained by European art theory. Yet the visitors to museum exhibitions presenting non-European art are generally largely influenced by European art and culture. How can we analyse aspects that appeal to the senses – colours, shapes, creative compositions – and convey them to a European audience in a way that will be understood?

Ethnologist Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin’s 1989 publication ‘Leben in Linie, Muster und Farbe’ (Life in Lines, Patterns and Colour) provides answers to this question. In this book, the author, having conducted extensive field research with the Abelam, developed a holistic approach to this people’s art, resolutely focusing on culturally intrinsic aesthetic rules and artistic aspects instead of ethnographic descriptions. Abelam art is best known for two things: firstly, the large painted gable fronts of their towering cult houses, made of sewn-together sago palm leaf sheaths, and secondly, the colourfully painted anthropomorphic wooden carvings. Yet objects made of other materials such as woven masks, string bags, clay vessels and bone daggers are also artistic in design. The author provides a completely plausible account of the relationships between these distinct expressions of artistic activity. Her explanations are supported in particular by an abundance of photos and drawings presenting the core elements of Abelam art and the principles of representation upon which it is based. As an excellent didactic introduction to a non-European system of art, the book was an inspirational eye-opener for me at the start of my museum career, specifically for the development of ways to present and explain non-European art in museums. Bearing this in mind, I am particularly delighted that Brigitta Hauser-Schäublin has written an essay for the publication that we have produced to accompany the exhibition ‘Green Sky, Blue Grass. Colour Coding Worlds’. I would advise all art fans to read her piece after visiting the exhibition, and for an encore they can immerse themselves in the book reviewed here. This is a wholehearted recommendation for anyone who is interested in taking a detailed and profound approach to exploring the art and aesthetics of other cultures. ALEXANDER KRAFT: Berliner Blau. Vom frühzeitlichen Pigment zum modernen Hightech-Material Im Jahre 1706 geschah in Berlin etwas, was die ganze Welt veränderte: die Entdeckung des Berliner Blau, auch bekannt als Preußisch Blau.

Der chemische Unfall, welcher zur Entstehung der Farbe führte, revolutionierte die Malerei. Das lag daran, dass die Farbe lang erhalten bleibt und sich nicht wie ihre Vorgänger nach kurzer Dauer grünlich verfärbt. Darüber hinaus war sie vergleichsweise günstig und einfach zu produzieren. So kam es in Europa zur berühmten Blauen Epoche, welche ihre Hochphase in den Jahren 1730 bis 1765 hatte. Auch weltweit genoss die Farbe große Beliebtheit und nimmt zum Beispiel in Katsushika Hokusais Meisterwerk „Die große Welle von Kanagawa“ die dominierende Rolle ein. Doch nicht nur die Kunst wurde von dem Berliner Blau beeinflusst. In der Wissenschaft eröffnete die begehrte Farbe aufgrund ihrer Zusammensetzung ebenfalls neue Möglichkeiten, sei es in der Herstellung von Displays, bei der Speicherung von Elektroenergie oder in der Nanomedizin. Mit all dem befasst sich der auf diesem Gebiet renommierte Experte und Chemiker Dr. Alexander Kraft seit über zwanzig Jahren. Doch geht der Autor nicht nur auf die Chemie und Kunst ein, sondern schreibt darüber hinaus in unterhaltsamer Art über die Geschichte von Berlin, von den beiden Erfindern Johann Jacob von Diesbach und Johann Conrad Dippel und natürlich von dem globalen Einfluss der Farbe, welchem sich niemand entziehen konnte. SABINE SCHLIMMA UND PETER STOHLER : Rotes Käppchen, Blauer Bart. Farben in Märchen „Rotes Käppchen. Blauer Bart“ ist ein deutsch/ englischer Katalog des Ausstellungshauses Grimmwelt in Kassel.Wie die Kulturwissenschaftlerin Sabine Schimma einleitend formuliert, gab es im späten 18. und 19. Jahrhundert ein verstärktes Bemühen, Farben und Farbwahrnehmung zu analysieren. Nicht nur die Brüder Grimm, sondern auch Johann Wolfgang von Goethe und Philipp Otto Runge, die Märchen sammelten und publizierten, waren von diesen Fragestellungen und Erkenntnissen beeinflusst. Gegliedert nach den Grundfarben erläutert der Katalog die Farbsymbolik der Märchen: hauptsächlich die der Brüder Grimm, aber auch einige von Hans Christian Andersen. Häufig wirken die Farben ambivalent. Zum Beispiel wird im Märchen „Die kleine Seejungfrau“ mit Blau Sehnsucht, Treue und der Wunsch nach Aufhebung der Grenzen ausgedrückt; hingegen kann Blau auch Kälte, Schatten und Unheil symbolisieren wie bei „Blaubart“. Im Kapitel „Mehrfarbig bis bunt“ wird unter anderem mit dem Märchen „Der Fischer und seine Frau“ erklärt, wie die wechselnden Farben des Meeres und des Himmels die ins Maßlose gesteigerte Gier der Frau unterstreichen. Ergänzend äußern sich drei Wissenschaftler*innen über die Erzählkunst, über die inneren Bilder, die Märchen beim Lesen und Zuhören hervorbringen können, und über die psychologische Bedeutung der Farbtriade SchwarzWeiß-Rot bei „Schneewittchen“. ALEXANDER KRAFT: Berliner Blau. Vom frühzeitlichen Pigment zum modernen Hightech-Material In 1706, something happened in Berlin that would come to change the world: the discovery of Prussian blue, also known as Berlin blue. The serendipitous chemical accident that led to the creation of this colour also revolutionised painting.

This was because the colour remained true for a considerable period of time instead of swiftly taking on a greenish tint, as its predecessors had done. It was, moreover, comparatively cheap and easy to produce. In Europe this resulted in the renowned ‘blue epoch’, which was at its height from 1730 to 1765. The colour was also hugely popular around the world, and plays a central role in works such as Katsushika Hokusai’s ‘The Great Wave of Kanagawa’. But the influence of Prussian blue extended far beyond the realm of art. Due to its composition, this highly coveted colour has led to new scope for development in the world of science, too, ranging from the manufacturing of displays to electrical energy storage and the sphere of nanomedicine. Dr. Alexander Kraft, a distinguished expert in the field with a background in chemistry, has been exploring all these aspects for the last twenty years and more. Yet the author goes beyond chemistry and art in this work, with entertaining sections on the history of Berlin, on the two men who discovered the colour, Johann Jacob von Diesbach and Johann Conrad Dippel, and of course on the global influence of the colour, which absolutely nobody can avoid. SABINE SCHLIMMA UND PETER STOHLER : Red Hood, Blue Beard. Colour in Fairy Tailes ‘Red Hood, Blue Beard’ is an English/German catalogue published by the Grimm World exhibition centre in Kassel. As cultural studies expert Sabine Schimma writes in her introduction, in the late eighteenth century and throughout the one that followed, increasing efforts were made to analyse colours and people’s perception of colour. Not only the Brothers Grimm but also Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Philipp Otto Runge – both collected and published fairy tales – were influenced by these issues and findings.

With each chapter focusing on different basic colours, the catalogue explores the colour symbolism of fairy tales – mainly those of the Brothers Grimm, but also several by Hans Christian Andersen. The colours frequently seem to be contradictory in nature. In the fairy tale ‘The Little Mermaid’, for example, blue expresses yearning, loyalty and the desire to remove limitations; yet blue can also symbolise cold, shadowiness and doom, as is the case in ‘Bluebeard’. The chapter ‘Multi-coloured to Variegated’ includes an explanation of how the changing colours of the sea and the sky in the tale ‘The Fisherman and His Wife’ emphasise the wife’s infinite greed. In addition, three scholars talk about the art of storytelling, about the mental images that fairy tales can evoke while we are reading or listening to them, and about the psychological meaning of the colour triad black, white and red in ‘Snow White’. The large-format colourful illustrations that accompany the catalogue truly tempt the reader to discover the deeper significance of these fairy tales and their cultural and historical symbolism. Public Guided Tours Further information at www.weltkulturenmuseum.de/en Tours, workshops and Children’s birthday parties The Weltkulturen Museum’s education programme offers visitors the chance to explore the subjects and themes in the current exhibition in greater depth, to research the objects, and to create their own connections with the collection, thus developing new ideas, questions or creative objects. We want children, young people and adults to see the Weltkulturen Museum as somewhere that belongs to them – not simply visiting the museum, but making it their own. The Weltkulturen Museum offers guided tours and workshops for all age groups in the current exhibition. Some are also held in English.

In numerous cooperation projects, participants become actors in the museum and discuss current social issues and topics.

„Bei der Auswahl der Objekte aus den museumseigenen Sammlungen waren es neben imposanten Ahnenfiguren, prachtvollem Federschmuck und wirkmächtigen Palmblattscheidenmalereien auch die kleinen Dinge, die Anlass zum Staunen und Nachdenken gaben.
