Ende 2019 wurde die Südostasien-Sammlung des Weltkulturen Museums um rund 200 Objekte aus der Sammlung von Annegret Haake bereichert. Das Museum unterhält seit Jahrzehnten Kontakte zu der Kronberger Sammlerin, die seit den 1970-er Jahren javanische Batiken und Schattenspielfiguren sammelt.

Ab 1976 kuratierte Annegret Haake zudem regelmäßig Batik- und Wayang-Ausstellungen, hielt Vorträge und gab Workshops – auch im Weltkulturen Museum. Die umfangreiche Dokumentation u.a. mit Datierung und Benennung der Wayang Kulit-Figuren macht die Sammlung Haake so bedeutend für das Weltkulturen Museum. Die füllige Limbuk und ihre dürre Mutter Cangkik sind Spaßmacherinnen (panakawan) aus dem javanischen Schattenspiel, deren Rolle es ist, auch jenseits der festgelegten Handlung frei zu kommentieren. Ähnlich können auch Sammler*innen wie Annegret Haake als „Stimmen aus dem Off“ die Museumssammlungen kommentieren.

In late 2019 the Southeast Asia Collection of the Weltkulturen Museum was augmented by around 200 objects from Annegret Haake’s collection. The museum’s ongoing relation with this collector from Kronberg stretches back decades. Not only has Haake been collecting Javanese batiks and shadow puppets since the 1970s, from 1976 onwards she regularly curated batik and wayang exhibitions, held talks and presented workshops – in the Weltkulturen Museum, among other venues. It is the extensive documentation, including details such as the dates and names of wayang kulit characters, that makes the Haake collection so significant for the Weltkulturen Museum. The stoutly built Limbuk and her spindly mother Cangkik are “clown servants” or jesters (panakawan) in Javanese shadow puppetry, who deliver a running commentary parallel to the fixed plot. Similarly, collectors such as Annegret Haake can comment on museum collections like “offstage voices”.

liebe freundinnen und freunde des weltkulturen museums

dear friends of the weltkulturen museum

Persönliches, soziales und politisches Engagement ist von enormer Bedeutung – nicht nur für ein Museum, sondern für jede Gemeinschaft. Wir widmen diese Ausgabe allen, die sich aktiv für eine gute Sache stark machen. Engagement für ein Museum – das bedeutet Schenkungen, Spenden und freiwillige Mitarbeit. Es zeigt sich aber nicht nur im bürgerlichen Ehrenamt. So setzen sich unsere freien Mitarbeiter*innen trotz ihrer oft ungünstigen Vertragskonditionen intensiv für unsere Bildungsarbeit, unsere Ausstellungen und Sammlungen ein.

Die fest angestellten Mitarbeiter*innen zeigen mit ihrem über die Alltagsaufgaben hinausgehenden Einsatz, wie sehr sie sich dem Haus und seinen Inhalten verbunden fühlen. Davon zeugen die Artikel über Nachwuchsförderung in unserer Restaurierungsabteilung und über eine akribisch durchgeführte Provenienzforschung. Mitglieder unseres Freundeskreises erklären, warum sie sich für das Weltkulturen Museum einsetzen, und eine Multiplikatorin des Programms „Kultüröffner: Museum“ erzählt von ihrem sozialen Engagement. Passend zu unserer Ausstellung im Weltkulturen Labor berichtet ein Medienvertreter von Sea-Watch vom Einsatz der Rettungsschiffe im Mittelmeer. Die Weltkulturen Bibliothek liefert wieder passende Lesetipps und der iranische Regisseur des auch in „Weltenbewegend“ gezeigten Films „Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time“ gibt ein Interview. Außerdem geben wir einen Einblick in unsere Zusammenarbeit mit Aktivist*innen aus den USA und Südamerika. Wir wollen immer wieder engagierten Menschen direkt Gehör verschaffen. Da die Ausstellung „Weltenbewegend. Migration macht Geschichten“ viele Anknüpfungspunkte dazu bietet, werden wir sie bis zum 31. Januar 2021 verlängern. Das Museumsteam dankt allen, die unsere Arbeit engagiert begleiten.

Personal, social and political commitment is of enormous importance – not only for a museum, but for each and every community too. We hereby dedicate this issue to all those who actively support a good cause. Showing commitment to a museum – that means gifts, donations and voluntary work. But this level of enthusiasm is not only evident from the volunteers. Our freelance staff is wholeheartedly passionate about our educational work, our exhibitions and our collections, despite the often unfavourable conditions of their contracts. Our permanent employees clearly feel a deep connection to the museum and its contents, displaying a dedication that goes way beyond their official roles. Articles on training the next generation of conservators and on meticulously conducted research into provenance bear witness to this. Members of our friends’ association explain why they are committed to the Weltkulturen Museum, and a multiplier in the “Kultüröffner: Museum” programme talks about her social commitment. Extending the theme of our exhibition in the Weltkulturen Labor, a Sea-Watch media representative reports on the deployment of the rescue ships in the Mediterranean Sea. The Weltkulturen Library once again supplies some perfect reading tips, and their is an interview with the Iranian director of the movie “Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time”, which is also shown in “Worlds in Motion”. In addition, we give an insight into our cooperation with activists from the USA and South America. We are always keen to make sure the voices of committed people can be heard. The exhibition “Worlds in Motion. Narrating Migration” provides so many points of reference in this respect that we have decided to extend it until 31st January 2021.

Willkommen in meiner Realität 03.

Als Aktivist*innen gelten Menschen, die sich öffentlich und mit großem persönlichem Engagement für eine besonders wichtige Sache einsetzen: die Umwelt (Greenpeace), Bürger- und Menschenrechte (Amnesty International), Rechte von Tieren (Animal Rights Watch) u. v. m. International berühmt geworden sind u. a. der Bürgerrechtler Martin Luther King und die Sozialaktivistin Angela Davis, beide aus den USA; aus Südamerika kennt man die guatemaltekische Menschenrechtlerin Rigoberta Menchú Tum und aus Europa die junge schwedische Klimaaktivistin Greta Thunberg. Mit letzterer teilt sich im Jahr 2019 Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, der indigene brasilianische „Dalai Lama des Regenwaldes“, Umweltaktivist, Anführer und Schamane, den Alternativen Nobelpreis „Right Livelihood“.

nicht auf Petitionen, Vorträge oder Demonstrationen beschränkt.

Auch politisch motivierte Bildende Kunst, Performance, Film, Poesie und Musik eignen sich zur Weitergabe kritischer Botschaften. Im Weltkulturen Museum waren in den vergangenen Jahren einige ganz unterschiedliche Aktivist*innen aus den beiden Amerikas zu Gast und haben in der Frankfurter Stadtgesellschaft für ihre jeweiligen Anliegen ein interessiertes Publikum gefunden. Unter ihnen waren politische Anführer*innen, Künstler*innen und Rap-Musiker, die ihre jeweiligen Themen auf individuelle Weise vorgetragen haben.

Für die 2018 verstorbene Künstlerin Shan Goshorn, Eastern Band Cherokee aus den USA, war die eigene indigene Herkunft ein wichtiger Bezugspunkt ihre­s politischen Kampfes und ihrer Kunst. Politisch kämpfte die Künstlerin für indigene Eigen-

ständigkeit, Rückführung von Kulturgut, gegen Genozid und Gewalt, insbesondere an Frauen und Kindern. Ihre kritischen Werke stellt die Korbflechterin in den Dienst der persönlichen und kollektiven Erinnerung an die traumatische Geschichte der Native Americans in den USA. Als Gastkünstlerin in der Ausstellung „Der Rote Faden. Gedanken. Spinnen. Muster.

Bilden“ im Weltkulturen Museum präsentiert Shan Goshorn 2016 einige farbige Körbe, aus Papierstreifen geflochten und mit besonderen Mustern aus Schriftzügen, Fotos und geometrisch-abstrahierten Formen. Ihre Werke enthalten Ehrung und Protest. In „We Are Them“ (2015), acht Miniaturkörbe mit Frauenporträts, verewigt die Künstlerin in Archiven vergessene historische Fotos westlicher Fotografen von US-amerikanischen indigenen Frauen und Mädchen. Ein anderes Werk zur Kritik am Internatssystem in den USA erinnert an das Schicksal von Shans Großmutter, die wie viele andere indigene Kinder in ein staatliches Internat gezwungen wurde, wo sie fern von den Eltern in das westliche System hineinwachsen sollte. Abwechselnd flicht die Künstlerin die Namen von indigenen Internatsschüler*innen sowie den Text eines Cherokee-Erinnerungslieds in den Korb mit dem Titel „Embracing the Precious“ (2015). Wie in einer Umarmung umgibt der Liedtext die Namen der Kinder, spendet endlich Trost, macht das Leiden unvergessen und hilft, ein generationsübergreifendes Trauma zu überwinden.

Die Erinnerung an den fast 500 Jahre dauernden transatlantischen Sklavenhandel und an das Trauma der Sklaverei in Brasilien bearbeitet der afrobrasilianische Künstler und Wissenschaftler Ayrson Heráclito 2017 in der Ausstellung „Entre Terra e Mar. Zwischen Erde und Meer. Transatlantische Kunst“.

Ziel seiner kritischen Kunst ist, historische Wunden der Menschheit durch die Kraft der Erinnerung zu transformieren und zu heilen, ohne anzuklagen. In der Performance „Die Verwandlung des Fleisches“, aufgeführt 2018 im Metzlerpark hinter dem Weltkulturen Museum, macht Ayrson Heráclito die in der Vergangenheit praktizierten, historisch verbrieften körperlichen und seelischen Gräuel an Sklav*innen auch für Zuschauende unmittelbar sinnlich nachvollziehbar. Der Künstler kleidet eine Prozession aus freiwilligen Teilnehmer*innen in aus Trockenfleisch genähte Oberteile und setzt darauf mit einem heißen Eisen Brandzeichen auf. „Erinnerung an Missbrauch und Sklaverei. […] Der Körper, gebrandmarkt von dieser Vergangenheit. […] halb Fett, halb Fleisch – Metapher für die Körper der Sklaven. Die Versklavung der Schwarzen hat der

ganzen Welt Schmerz und Wunden zugefügt und betrifft uns alle. Alle sind eingeladen: Ein glühendes Eisen auf der Haut. Erweckt uralte Erinnerungen. Geruch, Geräusch, Qualm – die Wunde muss durch Kunst verwandelt werden...“ (Ayrson Heráclito).

Sechs Aktivist*innen besuchen das Weltkulturen Museum in den Jahren 2017, 18 und 19, um auf Vertreibung und Völkermord an den indigenen Guarani in Brasilien aufmerksam zu machen. Im Bundesstaat Mato Grosso do Sul, wo das Volk der Guarani Kaiowá nahezu vollständig von agroindustriellen Großgrundbesitzern vom angestammten Land vertrieben wurde, drängen sich inzwischen über 40.000 Kaiowá in Slums, neben Großfarmen oder in Camps entlang der Landstraßen und Autobahnen. Ihre Versuche, auf ihr Land zurückzukehren, beenden bewaffnete Großgrundbesitzer mit Gewalt. In der Nähe der Metropolen São Paulo und Rio de Janeiro sind Guarani von Urbanisierung, Straßenbau und Immobilienspekulation bedroht.

Als Tagelöhner*innen sind sie überall ohne regelmäßiges Einkommen und ohne Land fehlt die Möglichkeit zur Selbstversorgung. Der indigene Anführer und studierte Geschichtswissenschaftler Ládio Veron, Guarani Kaiowá aus Mato Grosso do Sul, bereist 2017 zehn europäische Länder, trifft Politiker*innen, NGOs, Kirchenvertreter*innen, Journalist*innen und hält Vorträge für die Öffentlichkeit. Im Weltkulturen Museum spricht Ládio Veron von alltäglichen Ermordungen von Kindern und Erwachsenen und von systematischen Tötungen indigener Anführer*innen. Er fasst die Situation zusammen: „Die Milizen der Großgrundbesitzer kommen, schießen und töten“. Auf diese Weise wurde auch Ládio Verons Vater im Jahr 2003 in einem Streit um Land ermordet. Die für Indigene oft tödlichen Auseinandersetzungen setzen sich bis heute fort.

Die Schulleiterin Alenir Ximendes und die Gesundheitsbeauftragte Janete Alegre, beide Anführerinnen der Guarani Kaiowá-Frauenorganisation „Kuñangue Aty Guasu“, reisen 2019 durch drei europäische Länder. Sie berichten über Menschenrechtsverletzungen im Gebiet der Kaiowá und bitten um internationale Aufmerksamkeit und Hilfe. Im Weltkulturen Museum prangern sie Themen an, die besonders Frauen betreffen: sexualisierte Gewalt, Diskriminierung und Misshandlungen im staatlichen Gesundheitswesen, insbesondere bei der Geburtshilfe. Sie berichten auch über die Schönheit ihrer Kultur und ihren Kampf um deren Erhalt. Sie sagen: „Das Land ist unser Leben, unsere Identität, unser Erbe“.

Drei junge indigene Rap-Musiker, die Brüder Bruno und Clemerson Veron von der Gruppe Brô MCs aus Mato Grosso do Sul sowie Wera MC aus São Paulo, besuchen 2018 anlässlich der Ausstellung „Entre Terra e Mar“ das Weltkulturen Museum. Sie geben Konzerte, treten gemeinsam mit Frankfurter Rappern auf und diskutieren mit Student*innen. Sie treten auf wie Krieger, fordern in ihren kritisch-politischen Songtexten die Rückgabe des Landes der Guarani und prangern schlechte Lebensbedingungen an: „Wir sind mehr als 15.000 / Zusammengepfercht im Reservat, während die Gutsbesitzer / Unser Land besetzen / Einheimischer Kämpfer, Erbe von Brasilien […] / Der weiße, feindselige Mann, der tötet und massakriert“ (Brô MCs; Song „Humildade“). Die Rapper wollen ein selbstbestimmtes Leben führen, wollen anders sein als die Weißen, wollen indigene Lebensweisen und Weltsichten als Teil des modernen Lebens in Brasilien fortführen. Die neue musikalische Kunstform des Rap ist Teil einer Bewegung junger engagierter Guarani, die ihre Themen in eigenen Worten einer größeren Öffentlichkeit präsentieren und rappen: „Willkommen in meiner Realität“. Darin möchten auch sie mit Stolz die Schönheit und Würde ihrer Kultur zeigen. „Mein Land ist kein Staub / Mein Gold ist der Lehm, auf dem ich laufe und auf dem ich pflanze …“ (Brô MCs; Song „Tupã“; Übersetzungen Arno Holl und Maike Wiechert).

Bio: Dr. Mona B. Suhrbier studierte Ethnologie in Frankfurt und Marburg. Seit 1990 ist sie Kustodin der Abteilung Amerikas.

Sie beschäftigt sich mit Fragen der Gegenwart in der Ethnologie, mit indigenen Landrechten im Amazonasgebiet, mit Dekolonisierung und Sklaverei sowie mit Kultur, Religion und Kunst. Sie arbeitet mit zahlreichen indigenen Partnern sowie mit internationalen Künstlern zusammen und sammelte für das Museum zeitgenössische indigene und afrobrasilianische Kunst. Sie realisierte Ausstellungen, Kataloge, Veranstaltungen und wissenschaftliche Beiträge sowie drei Filme: über die Religion Candomblé in Salvador da Bahia und über den Besuch indigener brasilianischer Rappgruppen in Frankfurt. Sie machte Feldforschung u. a. bei Guarani in Brasilien und hatte Lehraufträge an den Universitäten in Marburg, Frankfurt und São Paulo (USP).

Bio: Dr. Mona B. Suhrbier studied anthropology in Frankfurt and Marburg. Since 1990 she has been the curator for the Americas at the Weltkulturen Museum in Frankfurt. Her focus is on contemporary anthropology, indigenous land rights in the Amazon region, decolonisation, slavery, culture, religion and art. She works with many indigenous partners and with international artists and has collected contemporary indigenous and Afro-Brazilian art for the museum. Not only has she been responsible for various exhibitions, catalogues and scholarly publications, she has also realised three films: about the Candomblé religion in Salvador da Bahia and the visit of indigenous Brazilian rap groups in Frankfurt. She has done fieldwork in Brazil with Guarani and has taught at USP in São Paulo and at the universities of Marburg and Frankfurt.

in recent years the weltkulturen museum has invited various indigenous and afro-brazilian activists from north and south america to come to frankfurt. americas curator mona suhrbier reports on these visits and on the collaboration between the museum and the activists.

Welcome to My Reality

People are regarded as activists when they publicly campaign for and are committed to an issue that is of great personal importance to them: the environment (Greenpeace), civil and human rights (Amnesty International) and animal rights (Animal Rights Watch), to name but a few. Some figures have achieved worldwide fame, such as the civil rights activist Martin Luther King and social activist Angela Davis, both from the USA, while South America has the Guatemalan human rights activist Rigoberta Menchú Tum, and in Europe there is the young Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg. In 2019 the latter shared the Right Livelihood Award – known as the “alternative Nobel Prize” – among others with Davi Kopenawa Yanomami, the indigenous Brazilian “Dalai Lama of the rainforest”. Activism is expressed in many different ways, which are by no means limited to petitions, lectures or demonstrations. Politically motivated artworks, performances, films, poetry and music are also suitable genres for passing on critical messages. In recent years, a range of activists from North and South America have been guests at the Weltkulturen Museum, where the people of Frankfurt have been an eager audience for their causes. These activists have included political leaders, artists and rap musicians, who have each presented their issues in their own unique way.

The artist Shan Goshorn, an Eastern Band Cherokee artist from the USA who died in 2018, viewed her own indigenous origins as an important point of reference both for her political struggle and her art. She campaigned politically for indigenous autonomy and the return of cultural goods, and against genocide and violence, particularly that directed at women and children.

The critical works produced by this basket weaver aid the personal and collective remembrance of the traumatic history of Native Americans in the USA. As a guest artist at the Weltkulturen Museum’s 2016 exhibition “The Common Thread: The Warp and Weft of Thinking”, Shan Goshorn presented several colourful baskets woven from strips of paper and featuring unique patterns composed of lettering, photos and abstract geometric shapes. Her works are both a tribute and a protest.

“We Are Them” (2015) comprises eight miniature baskets with women’s portraits; this was the artist’s way of immortalising indigenous US women and children portrayed on historical photos, which were taken by Western photographers and then left to languish in the archives. A further work criticises the boarding school system in the United States and recalls the fate of Shan’s grandmother who, like many other indigenous

children, was forced to attend a state-run boarding school, the aim being that the pupils would adopt Western culture once removed from their own parents. The names of indigenous boarding-school pupils alternating with the text of a Cherokee song of memory have been woven into the basket, which is entitled “Embracing the Precious” (2015). The words of the song surround the names of the children like an embrace, finally offering solace, ensuring that the suffering is not forgotten, and helping to overcome a trauma that crosses the generations.

The memory of the Brazilian slave trade, which lasted almost 500 years, and the trauma of slavery in Brazil was explored in the 2017 exhibition “Entre Terra e Mar. Between Land and Sea. Transatlantic Art” by Afro-Brazilian artist and scholar Ayrson Heráclito. His critical art aims to transform and heal humankind’s historical wounds through the power of memory, yet devoid of any accusations. His performance “Transmutação da Carne” (Transmutation of the Meat), which was presented in Metzlerpark behind the Weltkulturen Museum in 2018, gave the audience an immediate sensual impression of the physical and psychological horrors inflicted upon slaves in the past.

The artist clothed a procession of voluntary participants in garments stitched from dried meat and then branded the items with a hot iron. “The memory of abuse and slavery. […]

The body, branded by this past. […] half fat, half meat – a metaphor for the bodies of the slaves. The enslavement of black people, inflicting pain and wounds on the entire world, affects all of us. Everyone is invited to attend the ‘transmutation of the meat’. A glowing iron placed on the ‘skin’ (garments of dried meat) awakens primeval memories. Noise, odour and smoke – wounds needing to be transformed by art...” (Ayrson Heráclito).

Six activists visited the Weltkulturen Museum in 2017, 2018 and 2019 in order to draw attention to the displacement and genocide of the indigenous Guarani in Brazil. In the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, where the Guarani Kaiowá people were almost entirely displaced from their ancestral lands by the large agro-industrial landowners, over 40,000 Kaiowá are now crowded into slums, next to large farms or in camps along highways and motorways. The armed landowners have violently curtailed attempts by the Kaiowá to return to their land.

Guarani are under threat from urbanisation, road construction and property speculation near the metropolises São Paulo and Rio de Janeiro. Their work as day labourers leaves them without a regular income and their lack of land means they

have no way of being self-sufficient. In 2017, the indigenous leader and historical scholar Ládio Veron, a Guarani Kaiowá from Mato Grosso do Sul, travelled to ten European countries, meeting politicians, NGOs, church representatives and journalists, and giving talks to the general public. In the Weltkulturen Museum Ládio Veron talked about the everyday murder of children and adults and the systematic killing of indigenous leaders. He summed up the situation as follows: “The large landowners’ militias come along, shoot and kill”. This was how Ládio Veron’s father was murdered in 2003 in a dispute about land. The conflicts, which have often ended up being deadly for indigenous peoples, are still ongoing.

In 2019, the school principal Alenir Ximendes and the health official Janete Alegre, both leaders of the Guarani Kaiowá women’s organisation “Kuñangue Aty Guasu”, travelled through three European countries. They reported on human rights abuses in Kaiowá territory and appealed for international attention and help. In the Weltkulturen Museum they denounced practices that affect women in particular: sexualised violence, discrimination and abuses in the state health system, especially maternity services. They reported too on the beauty of their culture and their struggle to preserve it. As they said: “The land is our life, our identity, our heritage”.

Three young indigenous rap musicians – the brothers Bruno and Clemerson Veron of the group Brô MCs from Mato Grosso do Sul along with Wera MC from São Paulo – visited the Weltkulturen Museum in 2018 for the exhibition “Entre Terra e Mar”.

They gave concerts, performed with Frankfurt rappers, and held discussions with students. Their warrior-like performances and critical political lyrics demand the return of Guarani land and decry the poor living conditions: “There are more than 15,000 of us / Crammed into the reserve, while the landowners / Occupy our land / Native fighters, the Brazilian legacy […] / The belligerent white man who kills and massacres” (Brô MCs; song “Humildade”). The rappers want to lead a self-determined life, to differentiate themselves from white people, and maintain indigenous lifestyles and world views as part of modern life in Brazil.

Rap, as a new musical artform, is one aspect of a movement of young, dedicated Guarani who present and rap their issues in their own words to a wider audience: “Welcome to my reality”.

They seek to use this as a medium for proudly communicating the beauty and value of their culture. “My land is not dust / My gold is the clay I walk on and sow plants on ...” (Brô MCs; song “Tupã”).

Bilder, die Grenzen überwinden Von 2013 bis Dezember 2019 wurde der iranischkurdische Journalist, Dichter und Aktivist Behrouz Boochani von der australischen Regierung auf Manus in Asylhaft festgehalten. Mit seinem Smartphone hat Boochani auf der Insel Aufnahmen gemacht, die sowohl den Alltag im dortigen Gefängnis, die angespannte psychische Verfassung der Gefangenen und die Beziehung zu den Bewohner*innen der Insel dokumentieren, als auch das unrechtmäßige Vorgehen der australischen Regierung anklagen. So entstand ein kollaboratives Filmprojekt mit dem iranischen Regisseur Arash Kamali Sarvestani, der in den Niederlanden lebt: Aus den Aufnahmen hat er den Dokumentarfilm „Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time“ montiert, der in Ausschnitten in der Ausstellung „Weltenbewegend.

Weltkulturen Museum: Was bedeutet„Chauka“ und wie wurde der Begriff zum Titel des Films?

Arash Kamali Sarvestani: Der Chauka ist ein Vogel, der auf der Insel Manus lebt. Aber für die Inselbewohner*innen ist er auch ein wichtiges Element ihrer Kultur: Der Chauka ist ein Symbol für Zeit. Wenn der Vogel morgens singt, wissen sie, dass es sechs Uhr oder halb sieben ist. Er schmückt auch die Flagge der Provinz Manus und laut der Inselbewohner*innen repräsentiert er auch ihre Identität.

Man kann sehen, wie sie diesen Vogel lieben.

Andererseits war „Chauka“ der Name der Isolationszellen im Gefängnis der australischen Regierung auf Manus, wo Menschen physisch und psychisch gefoltert wurden. Behrouz und ich wollten den Chauka als Metapher in unserem Film verwenden. Der Verlust von jeglichem Zeitgefühl ist meiner Meinung nach die schlimmste Form von Folter. „Chauka“ hatte also eine völlig andere Bedeutung für die Geflüchteten.

WKM : Wie bist du auf die Idee gekommen, ein kollaboratives Filmprojekt über das Gefängnis auf Manus zu entwickeln? Wie bist du in Kontakt mit dem Journalisten Behrouz Boochani getreten?

AKS: Im Februar 2015 nahm ich an einem Workshop des Filmemachers Abbas Kiarostami teil. Dort habe ich den Film „Title of Essay: The Sea“ gedreht: Ich wollte herausfinden, was Student*innen aus einer Küstenstadt über das Meer denken. Zeitgleich sprach man in Europa von einer Flüchtlingskrise, in der das Meer stark präsent war. Als im Iran geborener Künstler war ich mir der Tragödie um Asylsuchende (viele von ihnen aus dem Iran) bewusst, die ihre Leben riskieren um über den Indischen Ozean nach Australien zu gelangen. Meine Idee war es, geflüchtete Familien zu kontaktieren, die auf der Insel Nauru festgehalten wurden, und die einzige umsetzbare Option war, einen der Geflüchteten Aufnahmen mit einem Handy machen zu lassen. Das scheiterte, einerseits wegen der geringen Internetabdeckung dort und andererseits wegen der Angst der Familien, ihr Asylverfahren zu gefährden. Aufgrund des Ernstes der Lage im Camp auf Manus habe ich mich dann entschieden, dort zu arbeiten und nicht auf Nauru.

Es stellte sich jedoch als schwierig heraus, dort mit jemandem in Kontakt zu kommen.

Und als ich mit der Recherche begann, musste ich mich außerdem gleichzeitig um meine beiden Kinder kümmern. Als Abbas Kiarostami

starb, erinnerte ich mich an all seine schönen Bemerkungen. Am letzten Tag des Workshops sagte er: „Das ist nicht der letzte Tag eures Workshops, das ist erst der Anfang. Geht los und macht eure Projekte.“ Also fing ich sofort an, weiter zu recherchieren und fand Artikel von Behrouz Boochani im „Guardian“. Ich war überrascht, dass ich vorher noch nicht von ihm gelesen hatte, aber aus Sicherheitsgründen hatte er die ersten zweieinhalb Jahre unter einem Pseudonym geschrieben. Also schickte ich ihm eine Nachricht über meine Idee auf Facebook.

WKM : Wie hast du mit Boochani kommuniziert und wie habt ihr Material ausgetauscht während er im Gefängnis war?

AKS: Nachdem wir ein paar Nachrichten auf Facebook ausgetauscht hatten, wollte Behrouz über WhatsApp weiter sprechen. Du wirst lachen, aber ich wusste nicht was WhatsApp war, weil ich Smartphones hasste (und immer noch hasse). Also musste ich mir ein Smartphone kaufen, um mit ihm zu kommunizieren. In der ersten Woche tauschten wir viele Sprachnachrichten aus. Das Internet auf Manus war wirklich schlecht. Manchmal musste ich lange auf eine Nachricht von ihm warten aber ich glaube, dass das fehlende Internet ein großer Gewinn für uns war: Wir mussten beide warten, um unsere Stimmen zu hören und das machte sie sehr kostbar. Ich nannte sie ein Goldstück. Manchmal hörte ich seine Sprachnachrichten zehnmal. Ich glaube, dass es für ihn genauso war. Um zu verstehen, wie wir den Film gemacht haben, muss man darüber nachdenken, wie moderne Technologie uns im Austausch von Informationen geholfen hat.

Behrouz schickte mir 30 Sekunden Material.

Die Qualität war sehr schlecht aber ich sah es trotzdem wie ein Goldstück an, weil wir nun über etwas diskutieren konnten, das wir beide sahen. Also begannen wir, über das Filmen, die Handlung und technische Dinge zu sprechen.

Die meiste Zeit war es so, als würden wir einfach an einem Tisch sitzen und über das Projekt reden.

WKM : Das Gefängnis wurde im Oktober 2017 offiziell geschlossen, kurz nach der Veröffentlichung von „Chauka“, aber Hunderte Gefangene sind immer noch in Asylhaft. Wie ist die Situation in den Gefängnissen heute?

AKS: Ja, das Gefängnis wurde offiziell geschlossen, aber die Geflüchteten werden noch genauso behandelt. Vielleicht sogar schlimmer.

Die australische Regierung spielt ihr Spiel einfach weiter. Jetzt, nach sechs Jahren, wurden einige Geflüchtete nach Australien in andere Gefängnisse gebracht, wo sie nur eingeschränkten Zugang zur Welt draußen und keinen eindeutigen Status haben.

WKM : Welche Rolle können Dokumentarfilme wie „Chauka“ spielen, um das Vorgehen der australischen Regierung gegen Geflüchtete und Migrant*innen zu verbessern?

AKS: Als wir begannen, den Film zu produzieren, wollten wir zur Geschichte beitragen.

Wir hätten aber nie gedacht, dass er auf Festivals gezeigt und von Nachrichtenagenturen wie BBC, Reuters oder Al Jazeera über ihn berichtet werden würde. Wir wollten einfach ein Stück Geschichte künstlerisch herstellen. Aber als wir das Projekt fast beendet hatten, wurde uns klar, dass der Film die Qualität haben würde, um von einem größeren Publikum ge-

sehen zu werden. Als der Film beim Sydney Film Festival und später im ACMI (Australian Center for the Moving Image) in Melbourne gezeigt wurde, bekamen wir viele positive Reaktionen.

WKM : „Chauka“ wurde auf zahlreichen Filmfestivals in Australien und Europa gezeigt, z.B. bei den Berliner Festspielen. Wie hat das Publikum auf den Film reagiert?

AKS: Ich glaube, dass das Publikum abhängig von seinem politischen, sozialen, künstlerischen und geografischen Hintergrund unterschiedliche Fragen zu diesem Thema hat.

Menschen in Europa wussten nicht viel über Australiens Vorgehen und als sie den Film sahen, waren sie schockiert. Aber ich denke, dass der Film auch für Menschen, denen das Thema bekannter war, viele Fragen aufwarf.

Als Teil einer abschreckenden Asylpolitik, die zynisch „Pazi- fische Lösung“ genannt wird, will die australische Regierung Asylsuchende, die zumeist von Indonesien aus versuchen, mit Booten nach Australien zu gelangen, vom Festland fernhalten. Stattdessen werden die Gef lüchteten und Asylsuchenden in Internierungslager auf der Insel Manus, die zu Papua-Neuguinea gehört, sowie auf den kleinen, abgelegenen Inselstaat Nauru gebracht. Dort werden sie oft für Jahre in Asylhaft festgehalten – ohne Perspektive auf ein ordentliches Asylverfahren.

Images that Cross Borders DIRECTOR ARASH KAMALI SARVESTANI ABOUT THE EMERGENCE OF THE COLLABORATIVE FILM PROJECT “CHAUKA, PLEASE TELL US THE TIME” AND A FILM’S POTENTIAL TO MAKE HISTORY. INTERVIEW BY MAIKE WIECHERT 09.

From 2013 to December 2019, the Iranian-Kurdish journalist, poet and activist Behrouz Boochani was held in immigration detention on Manus by the Australian government. With his smartphone, Boochani made film recordings on the island, documenting the everyday life inside the detention centre, the tense mental health condition of the detainees and the relation to the Manusians, as well as criticizing the unlawful activities of the Australian government. In collaboration with the Iranian director Arash Kamali Sarvestani who lives in the Netherlands, a film project was created: Sarvestani compiled and edited Boochani’s footage into the documentary film “Chauka, Please Tell Us the Time” which is shown in parts at the exhibition “Worlds in Motion. Narrating Migration”.

Weltkulturen Museum: What does “Chauka” mean and why did it become the title of the film?

Arash Kamali Sarvestani: The chauka is a bird which lives on Manus Island. For the local people, however, it is not just a bird. It is also a very important element in their culture: The chauka is a symbol of time. In the morning when the chauka sings, they know it’s six or half past six in the morning. It also

decorates the flag of the Manus provinces. And according to the locals, the chauka represents Manusian identity. It is obvious how much they revere this bird. At the same time, “chauka” was the name of the solitary confinement cell that Australia constructed in the detention centre on Manus, where they tortured people physically and mentally. Behrouz and I decided to use the chauka as a metaphor in our film. In my opinion the highest level of torture is when they make you lose the meaning of time. That is what I call using time as a tool of torture. In this case, the name “chauka” meant something totally different for the refugees.

WKM : How did you come up with the idea to make a collaborative film project about the prison on Manus Island? How did you get to know the journalist Behrouz Boochani?

AKS: In February 2015 I participated in a workshop offered by the filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami. There, I made the movie “Title of Essay: The Sea”: I wanted to know what a group of students living in a coastal city thinks about the sea. The workshop coincided with the refugee crisis in Europe in which the sea has had a strong presence. As an Iranian-born artist I was aware of the tragedy happening to the asylum seekers (many of whom are Iranian) risking their lives to cross the Indian Ocean to get to Australia. My idea was to contact the refugee families detained on Nauru Island. And the only viable option was to have one of the refugees make shots using a mobile phone. I failed to do this partly because of very poor internet coverage there and partly because of the families’ fear of losing their refugee cases or appeals. Due to the severity of the situation in the camp on Manus at that time, I decided to work there rather than on Nauru. Finding a connection there was difficult. When I started my investigation, I also had to take care of my two kids at the same time. Then Abbas Kiarostami passed away and I remembered all

those beautiful comments he had made. One of them was on the last day of the workshop: “This is not the last day of your workshop, this is the beginning of it. Just go and make your projects.” So I started immediately then to investigate again and I found some articles from Behrouz Boochani in “The Guardian”. I was surprised that I had not read about him before. Later I realised that for security reasons, he worked under an alias for the first two and a half years. So I sent him a message about my idea via Facebook.

WKM : How did you communicate and exchange material with Boochani while he was in the detention camp?

AKS: After we exchanged some messages on Facebook, Behrouz asked me to continue communicating with him via WhatsApp. You may laugh, but at that time I didn’t know what WhatsApp was, because of the fact that I hated (and still hate) smartphones. So I had to buy a smartphone to communicate with him. During the first week we exchanged many voice messages. The internet speed on Manus was really bad. Sometimes I had to wait for a long time to get a message from him. But I believe the lack of internet service was a big benefit for both of us: We each had to wait to hear one another’s voice and that waiting made it very valuable. I used to call it a piece of gold. Sometimes I listened to his voice messages maybe ten times over. I believe it was the same for him.

To understand how we made this film, it is important to think about how modern technology helped us to exchange information.

The quality was absolutely bad but I valued it like a piece of gold because now we could discuss about something that we both could see.

We started then to talk about filming, about the storyline, and technical issues. Most of the time it even felt like we were sitting at a table talking about the project.

WKM : The prison was officially closed in October 2017, shortly after the release of “Chauka”. But hundreds of detainees are still kept in immigration detention. What is the situation in the detention camps today?

AKS: Yes, the prison is officially closed but the way of treating refugees is still the same.

It is maybe even worse than before. The Australian government just continues its game.

Now, after six years, some refugees were moved to Australia to other detention centres and have no or just limited access to the outside world. Even if they have access they do not have a clear status.

WKM : Which role do you think documentary films like “Chauka” can play in helping to improve the treatment of refugees and immigrants by the Australian government?

AKS: When we started making the film we just wanted to contribute to history. We never thought that it would be screened at festivals and covered by news agencies such as BBC, Reuters or Al Jazeera. We just wanted to make a piece of history in an artistic way. But when we had almost finished the project, we realized that the film would have the quality to be seen by a broader audience. When the film was screened at the Sydney Film Festival and later at ACMI (Australian Centre for the Moving Image) in Melbourne, we received many positive reactions.

WKM : “Chauka” was screened at various film festivals in Australia and Europe, e.g. at the Berliner Festspiele. How did people react to the film?

AKS: I think that depending on the audience’s political, social, artistic and geographic backgrounds, they have different questions about this issue. What I could see in general was that people in Europe were not aware of Australia’s actions. When they saw the film, they were shocked. But I think the film raised many questions, even for those who are closer to this issue.

Aufgrund der hohen Anforderungen an eine moderne Restaurierung hat sich schwerpunktmäßig die Ausbildung weg von einer rein handwerklichen hin zu einem praxisbezogenen, einschlägigen Studium entwickelt. Wer sich heutzutage dafür entscheidet den Beruf des Restaurators zu ergreifen, schlägt meistens den Weg über ein mehrjähriges Studium an einer (Fach-)Hochschule mit einem vorangegangenen, mindestens einjährigen fachbezogenen Pflichtpraktikum ein. In diesem einen Jahr lernen die Praktikant*innen den Berufswunsch zu festigen und einschlägige Kenntnisse mit an die Hochschule zu nehmen, um zielgerichtet in das Studium zu starten. Zu diesen Kenntnissen zählen neben dem Umgang mit Kulturgütern unter anderem das Analysieren und Dokumentieren (Skizzieren, Zeichnen, Fotografieren), um den Erhaltungszustand zu beschreiben, das Erstellen von Maßnahmenkonzepten und die Durchführung der geplanten restauratorischen und konservatorischen Maßnahmen. Des Weiteren wird der/die Praktikant*in mit den Arbeiten des Restaurators oder der Restauratorin im Ausstellungsbetrieb, im Leihverkehr und im Depot vertraut gemacht. Auch in der Restaurierungswerkstatt des Weltkulturen Museums werden seit 2016 erfolgreich Praktikant*innen ausgebildet. Durch die umfassende Vermittlung von Theorie und Praxis unter Berücksichtigung moderner ethischer Restaurierungsgrundsätze soll ein verantwortungsvoller Beitrag zur Nachwuchsbildung dieses „Orchideenberufs“ geleistet werden. Für die Ausstellung „Weltenbewegend. Migration macht Geschichten“ hat die Praktikantin Lena Klar zum Beispiel die Göttin Yemanjá aus Stroh restauriert. Hierfür hat sie die Enden dieses sehr spröden und zerbrechlichen Materials mit eingefärbtem Japanpapier und einem geeigneten Klebstoff gesichert. Darüber hinaus wurden nähtechnische Sicherungen mit hauchdünnem Polyestergarn durchgeführt. An einem Bootsmodell, das ebenfalls in der aktuellen Ausstellung präsentiert wird, fertigte sie Holzergänzungen an und rekonstruierte den Verlauf der Takelage.

The high standards placed on current conservation methods have led to a shift in training from an apprenticeship to a practice-oriented degree program. These days, most people who decide to become a professional conservator choose to study at tertiary level for several years, preceded by a compulsory internship in a related field lasting at least one year. During this year, the interns strengthen their career aspirations and gain experience in the conservation field while also being prepared for their studies. Aside from learning how to deal with cultural heritage, they are also trained in analyzing and documenting (sketching, drawing, photographing) the condition of the artifacts as well as taught in planning and executing appropriate conservation treatments. Furthermore, the interns are introduced to the tasks of a conservator regarding exhibitions, loans and the storage facilities. Since 2016, the conservation department of the Weltkulturen Museum has also been successfully training interns. The comprehensive teaching of theory and practice, taking into account modern ethical conservation principles, is intended to make a responsible contribution to the training of young people in this rare profession. Intern Lena Klar, for example, has restored the straw goddess Yemanjá for the exhibition “Worlds in Motion. Narrating Migration”. She used dyed Japanese paper and a suitable adhesive as backing material to conserve the brittle and fragile straw. Additionally, she secured loose parts with wafer-thin polyester yarn. On a boat model, which is also on display in the exhibition, she filled areas of loss with wood and reconstructed the rigging. Die Rückkehr der Rettungsschiffe 12.

„Piraterie im frühen achtzehnten Jahrhundert war im Grunde ein Kampf für das Leben, gegen den sozial organisierten Tod.“1 Diese Definition der Piraterie aus Markus Redikers „Villains of all Nations“ wird dem damaligen italienischen Innenminister Matteo Salvini wohl kaum durch den Kopf gegangen sein, als er im Juni 2019, angesichts der Rettung von 52 Menschen durch die Crew der Sea-Watch 3, proklamierte: „ein weiterer Akt der Piraterie durch eine geächtete Organisation“.

Und doch tobt auf dem Mittelmeer seit mittlerweile fünf Jahren ein ebensolcher Kampf: Die Staaten Europas haben an ihrer gemeinsamen Außengrenze eine Zone erschaffen, in der alle durch die EU proklamierten Werte, ihre Bürger*innen- und Menschenrechte suspendiert sind. Ein Ausnahmezustand, der das Meer zur Waffe degradiert, Menschen zur Verhandlungs-

masse – und die fluide Südgrenze des europäischen Kontinents zur tödlichsten Migrationsroute der Welt macht.2 Die europäischen Aktivist*innen von Sea-Watch und anderen Rettungsorganisationen, die sich dem widersetzen, sind keine Pirat*innen im historischen, legalen oder ideellen Sinne: Die historische Piraterie war, nach Rediker, ein (Klassen-)Kampf um das eigene Leben, der blanken Trotz dem Tode gegenüber voraussetzte. Die zivile Seenotrettung im Mittelmeer ist in erster Linie ein solidarischer Kampf, aus der privilegierten Position heraus, dass es eben nicht das eigene Leben ist, welches zur Disposition steht. Es sind die Leben der Anderen – also derer, die durch nationalstaatliche Logik aus dem europäischen Wir ausgeschlossen sind –, die zehntausendfach in der Sahara und auf dem Mittelmeer verloren gehen, die in libyschen Inter-

nierungslagern vor sich hin vegetieren und für deren Rückverschleppung von hoher See die EU eine sogenannte Libysche Küstenwache mit Millionenbeträgen bezahlt. „Ich brauche mir fremde Probleme, Sorgen und Unterdrückung nicht anzueignen“, erklärte Pia Klemp, eine der Kapitäninnen der zivilen Seenotrettungsflotte, der in Italien ein Prozess wegen Beihilfe zur illegalen Einreise droht: „Solidarität bedeutet zu erkennen, dass diese Probleme schon von Anfang an meine eigenen sind. Egal, ob sie Auswirkungen auf mein tägliches Leben haben oder nicht.“ Vielleicht ist es genau diese Idee, die eine Konstruktion des Anderen und damit die Ignoranz gegenüber dessen Leid ausschließt und damit in der momentanen Mentalität der EU einen Akt gedanklicher Piraterie darstellt.

In den Berliner Kollektiven jib und Peng! beteiligte er sich an zahlreichen Reportage-Projekten und aktionskünstlerischen Interventionen. Dem Bundeskriminalamt ist Grodotzki „als Angehöriger der deutschen linksextremistischen Szene und Umweltaktivist bekannt“ und darf deshalb nicht über weltpolitische Gipfeltreffen berichten. Stattdessen unterstützt er Sea-Watch und war über die letzten Jahre festes Mitglied des Medienteams der Organisation.

Info: Die sogenannte Libysche Küstenwache ist ein Verbund von Milizen, der bereits seit 2016 durch die EU ausgerüstet, finanziert und im Rahmen der EU-Marinemission SOPHIA trainiert wurde. Bereits im April 2016 hatte eine Besatzung dieser „Küstenwache“ die Sea-Watch 2 bedroht und geentert, bevor sie Schiff und Besatzung am 10. Mai 2017 durch ein halsbrecherisches Manöver vor dessen Bug erneut gefährdete. Im August beschossen sie die Bourbon Argos und enterten diese, im September entführten sie das Schnellboot Speedy inklusive Besatzung nach Libyen (die Crew kam kurz darauf wieder frei, das Boot nicht). Im November schließlich bedrängte das Patrouillenboot Taleel sogar versehentlich die deutsche Marine-Fregatte MecklenburgVorpommern. Allein im Jahr 2017 erhielt die international anerkannte „Regierung“ Libyens – die nur etwa ein Drittel des Landes kontrolliert – 156 Millionen Euro aus dem „Emergency Trust Fund for Africa“, um irreguläre Migration durch das Land und über das Meer zu unterbinden.

Seit die MS Sea-Watch 2015 in See stach, um diese Idee zu vertreten und dem Sterben an der Außengrenze etwas entgegenzusetzen, hat sich jedenfalls einiges getan: 2015 und 2016 in der Zivilgesellschaft gefeiert und von den staatlichen Stellen in das offizielle Such- und Rettungsnetzwerk eingebunden, drehte der politische Wind im zentralen Mittelmeer schnell.

Im ersten Halbjahr 2017 begannen Schlüsselpersonen der europäischen Politik die Behauptung zu etablieren, die zivilen Retter*innen arbeiteten auf die eine oder andere Weise mit den Menschenschmugglern in Libyen zusammen. Gestützt auf „Arbeitshypothesen“ des sizilianischen Staatsanwaltes Carmelo Zuccaro verkündete beispielsweise der damalige österreichische Außenminister Sebastian Kurz, der „NGO-Wahnsinn“ müsse beendet werden. Auch der damalige deutsche Innenminister Thomas de Maizière übernahm die unbelegten Behauptungen Zuccaros, „dass die Schiffe in libysche Gewässer fahren und vor dem Strand ihre Positionslichter einschalten“ würden.

Was er nicht übernahm, war Zuccaros weitere (und in der konservativen politischen Mitte womöglich unpopulärere) Arbeitshypothese, „dass manche Hilfsorganisationen Migranten nach Italien bringen wollen, um die Wirtschaft zu schwächen“.

Parallel zur öffentlichkeitswirksamen Kampagne an Land zogen sich die staatlichen Militär- und Polizeioperationen aus dem Suchgebiet vor der libyschen Küste zurück, um, wie Paolo Cuttitta im Border Criminologies Blog der Universität Oxford darlegt, „der libyschen Küstenwache Raum zu geben, Migrant*innen zurück zu verschleppen, sowie NGO-Schiffe zu vertreiben und einzuschüchtern.“3 Im Sommer 2017 wurde schließlich das Rettungsschiff Iuventa des Vereins Jugend Rettet in Italien beschlagnahmt. Mehrere humanitäre Organisationen stellten daraufhin ihr Engagement im Mittelmeer ein. Als ein knappes Jahr später, im Juni 2018, die Regierungskoalition aus 5-SterneBewegung und Lega in Italien an die Macht kam und der rechtsradikale Innenminister Matteo Salvini verkündete, die Häfen des Landes zu schließen, schien das Ende der zivilen Seenotrettung nahe. Auch das sozialdemokratisch regierte Malta, das den NGOs lange als Operationsbasis gedient hatte, schloss in

der Folge seinen Hafen, nur umgekehrt: Es ließ die Rettungsschiffe Lifeline, Seefuchs und Sea-Watch 3 über Monate nicht mehr auslaufen.

Doch aus der humanitären Intervention wurde eine Widerstandsbewegung: Die verbleibenden aktiven Rettungsorganisationen – Sea-Watch (DE), Mediterranea (IT), Open Arms (ES) und Sea-Eye (DE) – ließen sich weder von wochenlangen Stand-Offs 4 noch von den regelmäßig danach blühenden Beschlagnahmungs-Perioden abschrecken. Auch auf ein Minimum an Schiffen dezimiert und jeglicher Effizienz im Einsatz beraubt, führte die von manchen Aktivist*innen „No Borders Navy“ getaufte zivile Rettungsflotte ihren Kampf gegen Windmühlen unbeirrt fort: Jedes Leben, das auf See in Gefahr ist, muss gerettet und an einem sicheren Ort an Land gebracht werden. „Punto!“, wie Matteo Salvini sagen würde.

In seinem Essay „Of Other Spaces“ beschreibt Michel Foucault das Schiff als „die größte Reserve der Vorstellungskraft.“5 Die zivile Seenotrettung hat dieses geistige Potenzial des Schiffes nutzbar gemacht und gegen die tödliche Tristesse einer Festung Europa in Stellung gebracht. Sie hat ihre Schiffe als Vehikel nicht nur für Menschen, sondern für die Idee eines solidarischen, offenen Europas bereitgestellt – und das wurde dankbar angenommen. So schreiben die Politikwissenschaftler Beppe Caccia und Sandro Mezzadra der italienischen Seenotrettungsorganisation Mediterranea: „Unser Schiff wurde von einer Vielzahl von Standpunkten angeeignet und irgendwie neu erfunden. Sie reichen von besetzten sozialen Zentren bis hin zu Kirchengemeinden, Universitäten und Schulen, von Kleinstadtkreisen bis hin zu Großstadt-Versammlungen.“6 Die Schiffe, ihre Crews und Kapitän*innen zeichnen ein Bild, das die Probleme der Anderen zu unseren macht. Gleichzeitig werden damit aber auch die Lösungen zu Lösungen für uns. Matteo Salvinis wiederholte Forderung nach „Beschlagnahmung des Piratenschiffes“ unterstreicht daher nur die Foucaultsche Erkenntnis: „In Zivilisationen ohne Schiffe versiegen die Träume, Spionage ersetzt das Abenteuer und die Polizei die Piraten“7.

chris grodotzki is a permanent member of the sea-watch media team. in his text he writes about how civil sea rescue in the mediterranean sea has changed from humanitarian intervention to resistance movement.

The Return of the Rescue Ships

“Piracy in the early eighteenth century was, at bottom, a struggle for life against socially organized death.”¹ It is unlikely that this definition of piracy, from Marcus Rediker’s “Villains of all Nations”, was going through the mind of the then Italian minister of the interior Matteo Salvini when, in June 2019, he proclaimed that the rescue of 52 people by the crew of SeaWatch 3 was “yet another act of piracy by an outlawed organization”. And yet a similar battle has been raging on the Mediterranean Sea for the last five years: the European states have created a zone along their shared external border where all the values, citizens’ and human rights proclaimed by the EU have been suspended. A state of exception which degrades the sea to a weapon, people to bargaining chips – and the fluid southern border of the European continent to the most deadly migration route in the world.2 Whether viewed from a historical, legal or conceptual perspective, the European activists at Sea-Watch and other rescue organisations which are opposing this development are not pirates: according to Rediker, piracy in the past was a (class) struggle for survival, which presupposed a sheer defiance of death. But civil sea rescue in the Mediterranean Sea is primarily a fight for solidarity, coming from the privileged position that it is not the rescuers’ own lives on the line. It is thousands of other people – those who are excluded from the European “We” due to the logic of the nation state – whose lives are lost in the Sahara and the Mediterranean Sea, who are left to rot in Libyan detention camps, and whose forced return from the high seas is implemented by the so-called Libyan Coast Guard, which is funded to the tune of millions by the EU. “I do not need to make foreign problems, worries or oppression my own,” explains Pia Klemp, one of the captains of the civil sea rescue fleet, who is facing a court case in Italy for facilitating illegal immigration. “Solidarity means recognizing that all these problems are my very own from the beginning.

It doesn’t matter if the effects of it are noticeable in my everyday life or not.” Maybe it’s precisely this idea that rules out the con-

struction of “the Other”, and thus ignorance of their suffering, which constitutes an act of intellectual piracy in the current mentality of the EU. Since the MS Sea-Watch set sail in 2015 to epitomise this idea and take action against the fact that people were dying on the external European border, quite a bit has happened: in 2015 and 2016 the organisation was acclaimed by civil society and integrated into the official search and rescue network by the state authorities, but the political wind in the Mediterranean Sea changed direction swiftly. In the first half of 2017, key figures in European politics began to make the claim that the civilian rescuers were somehow colluding with the people smugglers in Libya. Based on “working hypotheses” presented by the Sicilian public prosecutor Carmelo Zuccaro, the Austrian politician Sebastian Kurz, then foreign minister, declared that the “NGO madness” had to be stopped. The German interior minister Thomas de Maizière similarly accepted Zuccaro’s unfounded claims that “the ships travel to Libyan waters and switch on their floodlights close to the beach”. What he didn’t go along with was Zuccaro’s further working hypothesis (and one that was quite possibly more unpopular among politically conservative centrists) that “some aid organisations want to bring migrants to Italy to weaken the economy”.

Parallel to the effective publicity campaign on land, the state-run military and police operations retreated from the search area off the Libyan coast, as Paolo Cuttitta of Oxford University’s Border Criminologies Blog reports, “in order to leave the Libyan Coast Guard free to push back migrants as well as to chase and intimidate NGO vessels”.3 Finally, in the summer of 2017 the rescue vessel Iuventa was seized from the NGO Jugend Rettet in Italy, which led to several humanitarian organisations abandoning their work altogether in the Mediterranean Sea. Just under a year later, in June 2018, civil sea rescue seemed to be nearing its end when a coalition of the 5-Star Movement and the Lega came to power in Italy, and the extreme right-wing interior minister Matteo Salvini an-

nounced that the country’s ports would be closed. Even Malta, a country ruled by Social Democrats which had long been used by NGOs as a base for operations, subsequently shut its harbour, but went about it the other way around: it prevented the rescue boats Lifeline, Seefuchs and Sea-Watch 3 from leaving the port for months on end.

But the humanitarian intervention turned into a resistance movement: the remaining active organisations – Sea-Watch (Germany), Mediterranea (Italy), Proactiva Open Arms (Spain) and Sea-Eye (Germany) – were deterred neither by stand-offs lasting several weeks 4 nor by their ships being regularly impounded. Even though the civilian rescue fleet was decimated to just a few vessels and left unable to deploy efficiently, it was dubbed the “No Borders Navy” by some activists as it steadfastly continued to “tilt at windmills”: every life in danger at sea has to be rescued and brought to a place of safety on land.

“Punto!”, as Matteo Salvini would say.

In his essay “Of Other Spaces”, Michel Foucault describes the ship as “the greatest reserve of the imagination”.5 Civilian sea rescue has harnessed this abstract potential of ships and positioned it against the deadly bleakness of a Fortress Europe.

It has made its boats available not just for people, but also for the notion of an open Europe operating in solidarity – and that has been gratefully accepted. As the political theorists Beppe Caccia and Sandro Mezzadra of the Italian sea rescue organisation Mediterranea comment: “Our ship has been appropriated and somehow reinvented from a wide range of standpoints that go from occupied social centres to parishes, universities and schools, from small town circles to metropolitan assemblies.”6 The boats, their crews and captains paint a picture that makes other people’s problems our own. At the same time, however, this also turns the solutions into solutions for us.

Matteo Salvini’s repeated demand for “confiscation of the pirate ship” merely underlines Foucault’s verdict that, “In civilisations without boats, dreams dry up, espionage takes the place of adventure, and the police take the place of pirates”.

Info: The organisation known as the Libyan Coast Guard consists of an alliance of militia groups that has been equipped, financed and trained as part of the EU navy operation Sophia since 2016. By April of that year, one of the “Coast Guard” crews had threatened and boarded the Sea-Watch 2, and then on 10th May 2017 it once more endangered ship and crew with a reckless manoeuvre across its bow. In August they shot at and boarded the Bourbon Argos, and in September they abducted the powerboat Speedy along with its crew and took them to Libya (the crew was released shortly afterwards, but not the boat). In November the Taleel, a patrol boat, even accidentally threatened the German naval frigate MecklenburgVorpommern. In 2017 alone, the internationally recognised “government” of Libya – which only controls about one third of the country – received 156 million euros from the EU’s “Emergency Trust Fund for Africa” in order to prevent irregular migration by land and sea.

Über Austausch auf Augenhöhe, kulturelle Teilhabe und Self-Empowerment Weltkulturen Museum: Können Sie mir kurz über Ihr Engagement bei „Kultüröffner: Museum“ erzählen?

Charlotte Njikoufon: Ich bin eine „Kultüröffnerin“. Seit 2001 engagiere ich mich beim AmkA als Multiplikatorin in mehreren Projekten. Aus meiner Sicht bietet „Kultüröffner“ den Teilnehmer*innen – in meinem Fall nur Frauen – eine günstige Gelegenheit, Neues kennenzulernen. In diesem Rahmen ist es für die Beteiligten eine gute Chance, während der Ausflüge ihre Freizeit zu genießen, aber gleichzeitig auch viel zu lernen. Das bedeutet, die Kooperation mit dem AmkA und den Museen trägt zum Empowerment der Frauen in den von mir organisierten Gruppen bei.

WKM : Welche Rolle haben Sie bei den Museumsausflügen?

CN : Zunächst kümmere ich mich um viele kleine Details, damit die Frauen überhaupt ins Museum kommen können. Bei unserem Besuch im Weltkulturen Museum habe ich für zusätzliche Dolmetscher*innen gesorgt, damit alle Frauen der Führung folgen konnten. Es gab Arabisch, Somali, Französisch und Farsi sprechende Frauen in der Gruppe. Meine Rolle bei der Führung war es, auf Französisch zu übersetzen.

WKM : Wie haben Sie und die Gruppe Ihren Besuch in der aktuellen Ausstellung erfahren?

CN : Wir fanden die Ausstellung sehr gut.

Wir waren alle begeistert, denn wir konnten uns in der Ausstellung wiederfinden. Wir begannen zunächst in den Räumen der Bildung und Vermittlung. Dort konnten wir uns mit den ausgestellten Objekten zum Anfassen beschäftigen. Und jede von uns konnte irgendeinen Bezugspunkt zu den Objekten finden.

Jede Frau konnte etwas zu einem Objekt sagen und noch mehr – sich zum Teil damit auch identifizieren. Nachher ging es weiter in die Ausstellungsräume in den beiden unteren

Stockwerken. Auch hier fanden wir es sehr spannend, weil wir in den Räumen Verbindungen von Religion, Politik, Geschichten und Musik entdecken konnten. Für die Gruppe war viel Interessantes dabei. Wir waren außerdem sehr fasziniert von den verschiedenen Stoffen (Wax-Prints und Wachsbatik). Die Geschichte der Stoffe, wie die Stoffe von Indonesien nach Afrika gewandert sind zum Beispiel, fanden wir äußerst interessant. Für einige von uns war es ein besonderes Erlebnis, die Stoffe in einem Museum zu sehen. Ein Highlight für mich persönlich war, dass Präsident Paul Biya, seit 36 Jahren im Amt, aus meinem Land Kamerun auf einer der Stoffbahnen abgebildet war.

WKM : Die Gruppe freute sich über die vielen Anknüpfungspunkte in der Ausstellung?

CN : Ja. Es gibt zum Beispiel eine Vitrine mit Koranversen, die die muslimischen Frauen in der Gruppe spontan für die anderen übersetzt haben. Sie fingen auch an, diese vorzulesen. Besonders für uns Christinnen in der Gruppe waren die Bilder verschiedener Religionen, wie zum Beispiel Mami Wata, von großem Interesse. Wir Frauen, die aus afrikanischen Ländern kommen, haben uns gegenseitig angeschaut [lacht], da Mami Wata für uns eher ein geisterhaftes Wesen (Wassergeist) darstellt. In afrikanischen Ländern wird Mami Wata nicht immer positiv angesehen. Es kann sein, dass ihr Bild in anderen Ländern romantisiert wird, aber in Afrika ist diese Figur, meiner Erfahrung nach, sehr mystisch und eher ambivalent.

WKM : Frau Njikoufon, Sie sind nicht nur bei „Kultüröffner“ aktiv. Für welche anderen Projekte engagieren Sie sich?

CN : Ich arbeite in einem Beratungszentrum als psychosoziale Beraterin für Frauen afrikanischer Herkunft. Bei „FIM – Frauenrecht ist Menschenrecht e.V.“ werden Frauen aus vier Kontinenten beraten. Zudem bin ich Vorsitzende vom Verein „Kone – Netzwerk zur

Förderung kommunikativen Handelns“. „Kone“ bedeutet Solidarität und in diesem Zusammenhang haben wir den Frauenbesuch im Weltkulturen Museum organisiert. In meiner Arbeit geht es immer um Empowerment von Frauen, Mädchen, Jugendlichen und Kindern in der Diaspora oder mit einer Migrationsbiografie, insbesondere afrikanische Frauen in der Diaspora. „Kone“ bietet regelmäßig verschiedene Workshops gegen Rassismus an. Wir organisieren viele unterschiedliche Projekte und sind außerdem Mitglied bei „DaMigra e.V.–Dachverband der Migrantinnenorganisationen“.

WKM : Wie kommt es, dass Sie sich persönlich so stark engagieren?

CN : Mein Vater war Diplomat in der kamerunischen Botschaft in Bonn von 1977 bis 1987, das heißt, Engagement habe ich zu Hause vorgelebt bekommen. Als Studentin in Aachen war ich auch sehr engagiert als Kulturvermittlerin. Danach kehrte ich nach Afrika zurück und habe als Entwicklungshelferin in Togo gearbeitet. Ich bin jemand, der durch und durch sozial engagiert ist.

WKM : Das ist für Sie selbstverständlich?

CN : Für mich ist es selbstverständlich. Ich teile gerne das, was ich habe. Frauen mit Migrationshintergrund dürfen aber für mehr als nur als Multiplikatorinnen eingesetzt werden.

Sie können mit ihrem Wissen und ihrem Knowhow an den richtigen Stellen etwas Wichtiges beitragen. Sie müssen jedoch auch entsprechend bezahlt werden. Und wenn das passiert, dann ist es ausgeglichen. Es ist schade, wenn Menschen mit Migrationshintergrund, die hochgebildet sind, die ganz viel zu geben haben, immer wieder im Schatten bleiben und nur nach vorne geholt werden, wenn es nützlich ist. Das finde ich mittlerweile ziemlich ungerecht. Es gibt sehr viel zu tun hier in der Gesellschaft und jede Migrantin, ob bereits etabliert oder nicht, kann etwas beitragen und eine Bereicherung für die Gesellschaft sein. Da

ich sehr vernetzt bin, weiß ich, wovon ich rede.

WKM : „Kultüröffner: Museum“ und Museen wie das Weltkulturen Museum arbeiten zusammen, um mehr Partizipation zu ermöglichen. Wie wichtig schätzen Sie solche Bemühungen ein?

CN : Gesellschaftliche Partizipation kann nur in Zusammenarbeit stattfinden. Um mehr beitragen zu können, ist ein Geben und Nehmen notwendig. Ich finde es wichtig für die Migrantinnen in meinen Gruppen, dass sie die deutsche Kultur entdecken. Und es gibt viel zu entdecken. Sie werden dadurch aus der Isolation, aus ihren Communities rausgelockt.

Gleichzeitig werden sie auch gestärkt – dadurch, dass sie mit Neuem, wie beispielsweise einer Ausstellung in einem Museum, in Berührung kommen. Vielleicht hatten sie in ihren Heimatländern nicht die Möglichkeit dazu, häufig, weil sie mit anderen Aufgaben beschäftigt waren. Mehr Partizipation bietet diesen Frauen die Möglichkeit, sich hier weiterzuentwickeln und auch Spaß zu entdecken. Das ist nicht nur für sie vorteilhaft, sondern auch für die ganze Familie. Sie können mit ihren Kindern Ausflüge unternehmen und sich dann mit ihnen darüber austauschen. Auch das gehört zum Empowerment. Denn es ist sehr wichtig, die Frauen zu stärken, damit sie als Vorbilder für ihre Kinder dienen können und helfen, dass die Kinder selbstbewusst ihren Platz in der Gesellschaft einnehmen.

Bio: Charlotte Njikoufon studierte BWL mit Abschluss Dipl.-Betriebswirtin an der FH Aachen, sowie Erziehungswissenschaften, M.A. und Erziehung und internationale Entwicklung an der Goethe-Universität Frankfurt. Weltkulturen Museum: Can you give me a brief overview of your involvement with “Kultüröffner: Museum”?

Charlotte Njikoufon: I’m a “Kultüröffnerin” – a “cultural opener”. I’ve been working with AmkA since 2001 as a facilitator on several projects. The way I see it, “Kultüröffner” gives the participants – in my case that’s only women – a great opportunity to discover something new. The way it is structured, not only do these excursions give them the chance to enjoy their spare time, they also learn a huge amount in the process. So this cooperation with AmkA and the museums contributes towards empowering the women in the groups I organise.

WKM : What role do you play in the excursions to the museums?

CN : First of all I take care of many small details that make it possible for the women to visit the museum. For our visit to the Weltkulturen Museum, I organised extra interpreters so that all the women could follow the tour.

There were women in the group who spoke Arabic, Somali, French and Farsi. My role during the tour was to translate into French.

WKM : What did you and your group think of your visit to the current exhibition?

CN : We thought the exhibition was really good, and we were all delighted because we could really see ourselves reflected there. We started off in the rooms of the education department, where we were able to touch the objects on display. Each and every one of us was able to find some way of relating to the items.

Everyone had something to say about an exhibit, and in some cases could even identify with it. Following this, the tour moved on to the exhibition itself on the two lower floors.

That was really exciting for us too, because we discovered connections to religion, politics, history and music. The group found so many different things interesting. We were also really fascinated by various fabrics (wax

prints and wax batik) on display. The history of the fabrics was very engrossing: for instance tracing the migration of the fabrics from Indonesia to Africa. Seeing the fabrics in a museum was a really special experience for some of us. One personal highlight for me was to find Paul Biya, who has been president of my home country Cameroon for the past 36 years, depicted on one of the bolts of cloth.

WKM : So the group was happy that there were so many points of reference in the exhibition?

CN : Yes. For example there was a display case with verses from the Qur’an, which the Muslim women in the group spontaneously translated for the others. They also started reading them out loud. The images from various religions, such as Mami Wata, were particularly intriguing for us Christians in the group. Those of us from African countries looked at each other [laughs] because to us, Mami Wata denotes rather a spiritual being, a water spirit. In African countries Mami Wata is not always viewed positively. It might well be that her image is romanticised in other countries, but my experience is that in Africa she is seen as a very mystical and somewhat ambivalent figure.

WKM : Mrs. Njikoufon, “Kultüröffner” is not the only project you’re actively involved with.

What other projects do you devote your time to?

CN : I work in a counselling centre as a psychosocial counsellor for women of African heritage. At “FIM – Frauenrecht ist Menschenrecht e.V. (‘Women’s Rights are Human Rights’)”, women from four continents receive advice. Moreover, I am chair of the “Kone association”, which is a network supporting dialogue between groups. It was via “Kone”, which means solidarity, that we organised the women’s visit to the Weltkulturen Museum.

My work always concerns the empowerment of women, girls, young people and children in the diaspora or who have a migratory back-

ground; but particularly African women in the diaspora. “Kone” regularly stages antiracism workshops. We organise numerous projects on various themes and are also a member of “DaMigra e.V.”, the umbrella organisation for migrant womens’ associations.

WKM : Where does your strong sense of personal commitment come from?

CN.: My father was a diplomat in the Cameroonian embassy in Bonn from 1977 to 1987, and that meant I saw involvement with the community being practised at home. As a student in Aachen I also did a lot of work as a cultural mediator. After that I returned to Africa and was active as a development worker in Togo.

I am a totally socially committed person.

WKM : So it is something that is intrinsic for you?

CN : It’s an integral part of who I am. I’m happy to share what I have. But women with migrant backgrounds have more to offer than just being facilitators. Their knowledge and skills can make a key contribution in the right places. But they also have to be remunerated appropriate to their qualifications. And if that happens, it balances out. It’s a pity when highly educated migrants, who have so much to offer, remain in the shadows, and only get brought forward when they’re useful. I’ve gotten to the stage, where I find that rather unfair. There’s so much to do here in society and every migrant, whether settled or not, can make a contribution and improve society. I have a big network here which means that I know what I’m talking about.

WKM : “Kultüröffner: Museum” and Institutions such as the Weltkulturen Museum join forces to increase levels of participation. How important do you think these efforts are?

CN : Social participation can only happen if we work together. If people are to contribute more, a degree of give and take is necessary. I think it’s important that the migrants in my group discover German culture. And there’s a

lot to discover. It draws them out of their isolation, out of their communities. At the same time it gives them a boost – the fact that they experience new things like an exhibition in a museum. Perhaps they didn’t have the opportunity to do that in their home countries, often because they were preoccupied with other tasks. More participation gives these women the chance to develop themselves while also discovering what fun is about. That is advantageous not only for them but for their entire family too. They can go on excursions with their children or discover new places and then talk about them with their families.

That is a part of empowerment too. It is really important to bolster these women, so they can be role models for their children and help them take their place in society with confidence.

In her autographical novel, she gives a vivid insight from a child’s perspective into her homeland’s political situation in the 1980s; the Shah’s rule, the Iranian Revolution and Khomeini’s regime, and war with Iraq. With great sensitivity she describes how, after arriving in Germany, her family made first experiences in refugee hostels. Finally, they are assigned their own home in Heidelberg and she and her sister and brothers can at last visit a school and learn with their peers. (Wuppertal: Hammer Verlag 2017. 145 pages. Malik, recognising the dangers to humans and nature alike, gets ready to set off. Despite huge doubts, the eighteen-year-old plucks up the courage to leave his country, while dreaming of a better future for himself and his beloved homeland. The Autobiography of a Senegalese Woman Reading about Ken Bugul’s experiences in this, her first book, gives us an insight how a young African woman feels in Western European society. The process of being ‘uprooted’ throws her into a painful personal crisis. In addition to her activities as an author, Ken Bugul has also been involved with an international NGO for many years. Ein ‚Old-Shatterhand‘ der Südsee?

Bio: Matthias Claudius Hofmann studierte Ethnologie und Religionswissenschaft in Göttingen, Apia (Samoa) und Wellington (Neuseeland). Sein Forschungsinteresse gilt der Ethnografie Polynesiens mit besonderer Berücksichtigung Samoas, der materiellen Kultur und oralen Tradition dieser Region sowie der ethnologischen Objektforschung. Im Rahmen seines wissenschaftlichen Volontariats am Weltkulturen Museum von 2016 - 2018 begann er seine Forschung über die Sammlung „Höllerer“ aus Nordost-Neuguinea. Seit 2018 leitet er als Kustos die Abteilung Ozeanien.

mit matthias claudius hofmann auf den spuren einer kolonialzeitlichen sammlung. zu den beständen des frankfurter weltkulturen museums gehören ethnografische objekte aus neuguinea, die 1906, in der anfangszeit des museums, angekauft wurden. heute sind noch rund hundert objekte dieses zu den ältesten beständen der ozeanienabteilung gehörenden konvoluts unter dem namen „sammlung höllerer“ erhalten.

Das Rätsel der Sammlung Die Objekte stammen aus dem nordöstlichen Teil des heutigen Papua-Neuguinea, das damals als ‚Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land‘ deutsche Kolonie war. Die Sammlung umfasst viele Alltagsgegenstände wie Schüsseln, Netztaschen, hölzerne Zierkämme und Schmuckstücke, Kleidungsstücke aus Rindenbast etc., aber auch verschiedene Waffen wie Steinkeulen und Holzschwerter. Dazu kommt noch eine große Anzahl von Ritualobjekten: Trauerkleidung, Schwirrhölzer und allerlei Zaubermittel.

Während der alliierten Luftangriffe auf Frankfurt während des Zweiten Weltkrieges wurde 1944 das damalige Völkermuseum mitsamt aller darin verbliebenen Ethnografika – darunter auch 41 Objekte aus der Sammlung Höllerer – völlig zerstört. Überdies wurde auch die gesamte Sammlungsdokumentation Opfer der Flammen. Zusammen mit den Erwerbsakten gingen tragischerweise auch die Informationen über die Hintergründe und Geschichte dieser Sammlung in Rauch auf.

Als ich begann mich mit diesen Objekten etwas näher zu beschäftigen, schien es mir zunächst eine schier unmögliche Aufgabe, Licht ins Dunkel der Sammlungsgeschichte zu bringen. Wo sollte ich ansetzen, um mehr über die Herkunft der Sammlung und vor allem etwas über den Sammler in Erfahrung zu bringen?

Die einzigen im Archiv des Museums erhalten gebliebenen Dokumente waren die Inventarkarten und das Inventarbuch, in das neu erworbene Objekte eingetragen werden und wo sie eine Inventarnummer bekommen; manchmal finden sich hier auch kürzere Einträge zum Erwerb. Auf den Inventarkarten werden die einzelnen Objekte genauer bestimmt: also worum es sich bei einem Gegenstand genau handelt. Die Maße und Materialien sind aufgelistet, die Funktion wird beschrieben und auch die Kulturregion, aus der es stammt, häufig ergänzt um eine Zeichnung oder ein aufgeklebtes Foto. In den analogen Zeiten han-

delte es sich hierbei immerhin um die grundlegenden Archivalien in der Museumsarbeit.

In der Regel werden hier auch die Namen der Vorbesitzer und der Sammler vermerkt.

Zum Vorbesitzer erfahren wir aus dem Inventarbuch, dass es sich um einen Architekten namens Höllerer (nach dem die Sammlung benannt ist) handelt, der 1906 die Objekte an das Museum verkauft hatte. Wesentlich bedeutsamer allerdings war ein Hinweis auf den Sammler: Ein (leider namentlich nicht genannter) Techniker der Neuendettelsauer Mission habe die Objekte zwischen 1904 und 1905 in der Gegend von Finschhafen gesammelt. Es ging nun darum diesen Hinweisen zu folgen und zu versuchen, die Identität des Sammlers herauszufinden!

Dem Sammler auf der Spur Finschhafen ist eine Hafenstadt im heutigen Papua-Neuguinea, die 1885 als Handelsstation gegründet wurde, als der nordöstliche Teil Neuguineas als ‚Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land‘ Kolonie des Deutschen Reiches wurde. Die in Neuendettelsau bei Nürnberg angesiedelte Missionsgesellschaft hatte etwa zu dieser Zeit ihre Missionsarbeit unter den Einheimischen nahe der Stadt Finschhafen aufgenommen. Das Archiv der Mission war inzwischen in Nürnberg im Landeskirchlichen Archiv der EvangelischLutherischen Kirche in Bayern untergebracht worden. Hier konnte ich neben vielen Dokumenten und Briefen auch die Mitarbeiter der Mission in Neuguinea für den besagten Zeitraum recherchieren. Es stellte sich heraus, dass nur einer hier in Frage kam: der Missionstechniker Hans Meier. Die Identität unseres Sammlers war somit gelüftet! Es fand sich im Archiv überdies noch eine Fülle an biografischen Angaben, Zeugnissen, Berichten und Briefen, aus denen ich viel über unseren Sammler in Erfahrung bringen konnte.

Der Architekt Hans Meier (1876–1955) war von 1904 bis 1911 als Missionstechniker an-

gestellt. Zu seinen Aufgaben gehörten der Haus-, Kirchen- sowie Wege- und Brückenbau. Als Landvermesser begleitete er die Missionare auf vielen, oft tagelangen Expeditionen ins unzugängliche Inland wie auch auf die umliegenden Inseln. Dabei profitierte er bei seiner Sammeltätigkeit von deren umfangreichen ethnografischen Kenntnissen. An einigen der Sammlungsobjekte sind kleine Etiketten angebracht, auf denen Meier den Ort, die Ethnie, den indigenen Namen des Objektes und häufig sogar eine kurze Beschreibung zur Funktion notiert hat.

Dass sich in Meiers Sammlung eine so große Anzahl von Kultgegenständen befindet, erklärt sich vermutlich dadurch, dass Taufkandidaten magische oder rituelle Gegenstände wie Schwirrhölzer als Zeichen ihres Übertritts zum Christentum öffentlich zerstörten oder den Missionaren aushändigten. Da Meier während der Zeit seiner Anstellung Neuguinea nicht verließ, hatte er wohl einen Vertrauten – den Architekten Höllerer–gebeten, die Sammlung in Deutschland für ihn zu verkaufen.

Meier suchte offenbar nach Möglichkeiten, sein Salär über Nebeneinkünfte aufzubessern.

Neben der Sammlung in Frankfurt verkaufte er nach seiner Rückkehr eine ähnlich umfangreiche an die Naturhistorische Gesellschaft in Nürnberg.

Ein ‚Old-Shatterhand‘ der Südsee?

Schließlich gab es auch noch eine unerwartete Entdeckung: Im Archiv in Nürnberg fand sich ein Vermerk über eine Adresse Meiers in Passau aus dem Jahr 1952. Als ich eine Anfrage an das Melderegister des Passauer Stadtarchivs stellte, wollte ich eigentlich nur das Sterbedatum des Sammlers in Erfahrung bringen, um meine Provenienzforschung damit abzuschließen.

Es zeigte sich jedoch, dass Meier dort als „geographischer Schriftsteller“ unter dem Pseudonym Hermann Rönninger bekannt war und sein literarischer Nachlass – zusammen mit Fotos aus Neuguinea – im Stadtarchiv aufbe-

wahrt wird. Ab den 1920er-Jahren veröffentlichte Hans Meier unter diesem Pseudonym eine Reihe von Abenteuererzählungen, vornehmlich in Groschenheften, sowie den vermeintlich autobiografischen Roman „In der Wildnis Neuguineas“. In diesen Schriften gab Meier vor, über seine Erlebnisse in Neuguinea zu berichten, wobei er aber seiner Fantasie freien Lauf ließ und Wirklichkeit mit Fiktion vermischte. Es handelt sich daher auch nicht um Berichte seiner tatsächlichen Arbeit in Neuguinea, sondern stattdessen um fantastische Geschichten über Goldsucher, Jäger und Abenteurer, die durch wilde Dschungellandschaften ziehen und sich in Auseinandersetzungen mit den Eingeborenen bewähren müssen. Er nannte sich später sogar nach seinem literarischen Alter Ego Meier-Rönninger und erklärte sich zum vermeintlichen Kolonialpionier, Goldsucher, Großwildjäger und Plantagenbesitzer, der durch den Ausbruch des Ersten Weltkrieges auf tragische Weise all seine Habe verloren hatte. Tatsächlich war er aber schon 1911 – lange vor Ausbruch des Krieges – im Streit von der Mission zunächst entlassen und dann auf Druck der Missionare zur Rückkehr nach Deutschland bewegt worden.

Man wähnt sich beinahe auf der Spur eines „Karl May der Südsee“, der an seiner ganz eigenen Old-Shatterhand-Legende feilte. Folgt man den verschiedenen autobiografischen Zeugnissen, Briefen, Zeitungsinterviews und seinen Abenteuererzählungen – den, wie er behauptete, „Tatsachenberichten“ –, so erlebt man die allmähliche Transformation Hans Meiers in sein fiktives Alter Ego Hermann Rönninger.

Ein Schriftsteller, der die eigene Biografie in einen Abenteuerroman umgeschrieben hat.

Die Sammlung ermöglicht uns Einblicke in das Neuguinea des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts und in die Missionsgeschichte während der deutschen Kolonialzeit. Im Sammler Hans Meier begegnet uns außerdem ein faszinierender bis zwielichtiger kolonialer Akteur dieser Epoche.

A Puzzling Collection The objects come from the north-east of what was then a German colony called Kaiser-Wilhelms-Land, now Papua New Guinea. The collection incorporates numerous everyday items such as bowls, net bags, decorative wooden combs and jewellery, clothing made of inner bark, etc. but also diverse weapons such as stone clubs and wooden swords. Then there are a large number of ritual objects: mourning clothing, bullroarers and all kinds of magical objects and paraphernalia. In 1944, Allied aerial bombing of Frankfurt completely destroyed what was then known as the Völkermuseum, along with the holdings remaining within. This included 41 objects from the Höllerer Collection. Moreover, all the documentation about the collection fell victim to the flames. Tragically, not only the purchase records but also background details and the history of the collection went up in smoke.

When I first started looking into these objects in more detail, it seemed utterly impossible that I would be able to shed light on the history of this collection. Where should I even start on my quest to find out more about its background, and above all about the collector himself?

The sole surviving documents in the museum’s archive were the inventory index cards and the inventory book, where newly purchased objects were listed and given their own inventory number; in some cases there are also brief details of the purchase. The index cards describe the objects in greater detail, in other words, what they are exactly. In addition to listing the measurements and materials, the function of the object is set out as well as the cultural region where it comes from; frequently this is supplemented by a drawing or glued-on photo. In an analogue era these were vital records for the museums. Generally, the name of the previous owner and the collector were also mentioned here.

The inventory book tells us that it was an architect called Höllerer – after whom the collection is named – who sold the objects to the museum in 1906. Far more significant, however, is a clue as to the identity of the collector: a (sadly unnamed) technician at the Neuendettelsau Mission Society amassed the items between 1904 and 1905 in the Finschhafen area. The key was now to follow this lead and try to identify the collector!

On track of the Collector Finschhafen is a harbour town in today’s Papua New Guinea, but it was first established as a trading station in 1885, when the north-eastern part of New Guinea became a German imperial colony. It was around this time that the mission society, based in Neuendettelsau near Nuremberg in Bavaria, took up its missionary work with the indigenous population near the town of Finschhafen. The mission’s archive had since been moved to the regional archives of the Bavarian Evangelical Lutheran Church in Nuremberg. It was here that I was able to examine not only documents and letters but also information about the staff at the New Guinea mission during the period in question.

And as it happened, it could only have been one person: the mission’s engineer Hans Meier. So the identity of our collector was revealed! The archive also contained copious biographical details, certificates, reports and letters, all of which gave me abundant information about him.

The architect Hans Meier (1876–1955) was employed as the mission’s engineer from 1904 to 1911. His role included building houses, churches, paths and bridges. In his capacity as a surveyor he accompanied the missionaries on numerous expeditions that often lasted for days on end, travelling to the colony’s inaccessible interior as well as to the surrounding islands.

In the process, his collecting benefitted from the missionaries’ extensive ethnographic knowledge. Some of the objects in the collection

have small labels attached, on which Meier has noted the place, the ethnicity, the indigenous name of the object and often even a short description of the function.

The fact that Meier’s collection contains such a large number of ceremonial objects can probably be explained by the fact that candidates for baptism would apparently destroy or hand over to the missionaries magical or ritual objects such as bullroarers as a sign of their conversion to Christianity. Given that Meier did not leave New Guinea during the period of his employment, he probably asked a trusted aquaintance – Höllerer the architect – to sell the collection for him in Germany. Meier was obviously looking for ways of improving his salary with casual earnings. In addition to the collection in Frankfurt, after his return he sold a similarly large array of items to the Naturhistorische Gesellschaft in Nuremberg.

An “Old Shatterhand” of the South Seas?

Finally, there was another unexpected discovery: the Nuremberg archive contained a note about an address of Meier’s in Passau dating from 1952. When I made enquiries about the residents’ registry in the Passau city archives, I really only wanted to find out the date when the collector died in order to conclude my provenance research.

But it turned out that Meier was also known as a ‘geographical author’ under the pseudonym Hermann Rönninger, and his literary estate – along with photos from New Guinea – was held in the city archives. From the 1920s onwards Hans Meier published a series of adventure stories under this pseudonym, primarily in ‘penny dreadful’ magazines, as well as an ostensibly autobiographical novel, “In der Wildnis Neuguineas” (In the Wilderness of New Guinea). Although Meier claimed to be writing about his experiences in New Guinea, he let his imagination run wild and mixed facts with fantasy. Far from being reports of his actual

work in New Guinea, the stories were fictional tales of gold prospectors, hunters and adventurers who advanced through wild jungle landscapes and were forced to prove themselves in conflicts with the “natives”. Later, he even started calling himself Meier-Rönninger, after his literary alter ego, and declared himself to be a colonial pioneer, gold prospector, big game hunter and plantation owner who had tragically lost everything he owned at the outbreak of World War I. In actual fact, by 1911 – long before the war started – he had been fired by the mission after a quarrel and then compelled by the missionaries to return to Germany. You could be forgiven for thinking you were on the tail of a ‘Karl May of the South Seas’, perfecting his very own “Old Shatterhand” legend.

Karl May was the famous German writer best known for his adventure stories set in the American “wild west”, and Old Shatterhand was one of his main protagonists and May’s alter ego. Looking through the assorted autobiographical documents, letters and newspaper interviews connected with Meier, along with his adventure stories – which he claimed were “factual reports” –it is possible to trace the gradual transformation of Hans Meier into his own fictional alter ego Hermann Rönninger.

This was an author who really turned his biography into an adventure novel.

This collection gives us insights into both early twentieth-century New Guinea and the history of missionary work during the German colonial era. But above and beyond that: the collector himself, Hans Meier, is a fascinating, if somewhat shifty, colonial player of the era.

Bio: Matthias Claudius Hofmann studied ethnology and religious studies in Göttingen, Apia (Samoa) and Wellington (New Zealand). His research interests focus on Polynesian ethnology, particularly that of Samoa, and the material culture and oral tradition of this region as well as the ethnological research of objects. He began researching the “Höllerer Collection” from North-East New Guinea during his research traineeship at the Weltkulturen Museum from 2016 to 2018. Since 2018 he has been the curator in charge of the Oceania section.

austausch geniessen, sammlung erhalten, lebendige vermittlung fördern Seit 1993 unterstützt der Weltkulturen Freundeskreis nicht nur Ausstellungsprojekte und Publikationen des Weltkulturen Museums, sondern steht mit seinem monatlichen Jour fixe auch für lebendigen Austausch von Meinungen und interessante Vorträge ergänzend zum Museumsalltag. Einen Beitrag zur digitalen Museumsarbeit leistete er außerdem im letzten Jahr durch die Finanzierung von Tablets und einem Minibeamer für die Weltkulturen Vermittlung, die in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder Projekte dank seiner Förderung realisieren konnte. Besonders im Gedächtnis geblieben ist der vom Freundeskreis ermöglichte Besuch samoanisch-neuseeländischer Künstler*innen und Tänzer*innen zum Museumsuferfest 2019. Diese führten in der zu Ende gehenden Ausstellung „Grey is the new Pink – Momentaufnahmen des Alterns“ mit der Tanzperformance „Tofa Si O’u Tina – Farewell to my Mother“ eine rituelle Verabschiedung der Fotografien von Raymond Sagapolutele auf: Die Werke, die Sagapoluteles Mutter sowie seine Schwester Ufitia beim Tanzen des traditionellen „Siva Samoa“ zeigen, übersetzten die Tänzerinnen Ufitia Sagapolutele, Lyncia Muller und Natalia Ioane in samoanischen Tanz mit zeitgenössischen Elementen. Außerdem unterstützt der Freundeskreis besondere Aufgaben, die in der Restaurierung anfallen. So wurden zum Beispiel 2017 in der Ausstellung „Entre Terra e Mar. Zwischen Erde und Meer. Transatlantische Kunst“ vom CandombléPriester Amilton Costa gefertigte bunte Kostüme der afrobrasilianischen Götter Oxóssi und Xangô gezeigt.

Für ihre Präsentation wurden lebensgroße Figurinen als Halterungen benötigt, die vom Freundeskreis und einzelner seiner Mitglieder gestiftet wurden.

enjoying communicative exchange, conserving the collection, promoting vibrant education Not only have the Weltkulturen Friends been supporting the Weltkulturen Museum’s exhibition projects and publications since 1993, its monthly jour fixe, featuring a lively exchange of opinions and interesting talks, also provides a fascinating addition to the museum’s main programme. Moreover, last year it made a contribution towards digitising the museum by financing tablets and a mini projector for the Weltkulturen Education. In recent years multiple education projects have been implemented thanks to the generosity of the Weltkulturen Friends. One especially memorable event made possible by the Weltkulturen Friends was the visit of Samoan-New Zealand artists and dancers for the 2019 Museumsuferfest. They marked the end of the exhibition “Grey Is the New Pink – Moments of Ageing” with their dance performance “Tofa Si O’u Tina – Farewell to My Mother”, which took ritual leave from the photographs of Raymond Sagapolutele; the works, which show Sagapolutele’s mother and his sister Ufitia dancing the traditional Siva Samoa, were transposed into Samoan dance with contemporary elements by the dancers Ufitia Sagapolutele, Lyncia Muller and Natalia Ioane. The Weltkulturen Friends also lend assistance with certain issues that arise during the conservation process. In 2017, for example, colourful costumes made by Candomblé priest Amilton Costa depicting the African-Brazilian gods Oxóssi and Xangô were shown in the exhibition “Entre Terra e Mar. Between Land and Sea. Transatlantic Art”. The life-sized figurines on which they were displayed were donated by the Weltkulturen Friends and several of its individual members.
