Music, Fashion & Subcultures

Music and Fashion are closely linked as they often reflect and influence eachother. Different Music genres often influence different fashion trends, often that symbolise the culture and social ongoing of their time Fashion trends can also influence music, with song artists adopting specific styles to shape their public image and brand

Music and subcultures are intricately entwined. For example, punk music’s rebellious ethos directly influences punk fashion, which consists of a DIY aesthetic, torn clothing and bold statements. Similarly, the rise of hip-hop brought along a distinctive style marked by oversized clothing, streetwear and flashy accessories.

The concept of subcultures created through music is a big part of history because it drives innovation and diversity by challenging conventional norms and introducing new styles By reflecting and shaping cultural trends, fashion subcultures contribute to the rich tapestry of social and artistic expression.

For those who don’t know, fashion subculture is a distinct group within a culture characterized by its unique style, fashion choices, and aesthetic preferences. These subcultures often emerge around particular music genres, ideologies, or social movements, and they cultivate specific looks that set them apart from the ‘ norm ’

The 1920s marked a significant era in the evolution of subcultures, with the emergence of the flapper movement Flappers challenged traditional gender norms with their fashion choices and behaviors, symbolizing a broader shift towards greater social freedom and individualism. This era, characterized by jazz music and progressive attitudes, laid the groundwork for future subcultures that would continue to question societal expectations.

A notable fashion subculture is goth, which emerged in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Rooted in the post-punk music scene,

goth fashion quickly developed into a distinctive subcultureknown for its dark, dramatic aesthetics and themes of romanticism, mysticism, and the macabre.

Mental Health

Are you aware of how much affect exercise has on our mental health? In this article we speak to a Mental Health professional Jo, to get her opinion on exercise in regards to mental health.

What are the overall benefits of exercise on mental health?

Regular exercise creates many benefits such as improved mood, reduced stress levels and better sleep

Can regular exercise reduce symptoms of specific mental health conditions, such as anxiety or depression?

Yes, regular exercise can significantly reduce symptoms of specific mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression

It does this because exercise lowers levels of stress hormones like cortisol which will help to alleviate anxiety Physical activity also increases the production of endorphins, which are natural mood lifters that can reduce anxiety symptoms

As well as this, participating in group activities or even team sports can provide social support and reduce feelings of isolation, which are common in depression

What types of exercise are most effective for managing stress and anxiety?

Some of the most beneficial exercises proven to boost your mental health include, swimming, running, yoga, strength training or even simply walking

How much exercise is recommended for mental health benefits?

Aerobic exercises such as running or swimming is recommended at 30 mins 3 times a week to help depression Also, performing exercises such as yoga a few times a week is proven to reduce anxiety

And finally, briskly walking for 30 minutes a day is a simple way to not only reduce stress and better your mental health but is also a basic necessity for your health

& Exercise

What recent research or studies highlight the relationship between exercise and mental health?

Sure, in 2019 a study reviewed 49 studies involving nearly 267,000 participants

The analysis found that individuals who engaged in high levels of physical activity had a significantly lower risk of developing depression compared to those with low levels of physical activity Regular exercise was associated with a 26% reduction in the odds of becoming depressed

What are some practical tips for starting and maintaining an exercise routine for mental health?

I would recommend starting small and setting small manageable goals

Choose exercises that you enjoy rather than forcing yourself into the gym if you dislike every single minute Track your progress, this could be on your notes app on your phone or even in a notebook

Reward yourself and celebrate the small wins, treat yourself to a new piece of workout wear for example if you went for 3 walks this week.

of society of society of society

Do you ever feel like an outcast in society? Like you’re a duck surrounded by swans, or a donkey surrounded by horses? No matter how people seem on the outside, everyone is the same. They do the same things, same routines even if they don’t want to admit it.

Awkward situations society never like to talk about is when you fake a laugh even though you have no idea what the other person has said just to avoid asking them to repeat what they said. This has happened more times than anyone can count, and it makes it especially awkward when they expect you to reply. Or another scenario for the socially awkward humans is when you’re waiting for someone in public when you’re alone and you pretend to text or talk on the phone to avoid the awkwardness even though no one around you is even paying attention but everyone feels like they have to as we are in a society where loneliness is seen as a weakness.

No one ever talks about when you are struggling to get to sleep and then you stress to the point where you calculate how many hours of sleep you’re going to get which stresses you out even more.

Or when you’re ill and google the symptoms you have, and convince yourself you’re going to die soon even though you probably only have a common cold.

What about when you’re driving in an unknown place and have to turn down the music so you can ‘see’ better even though you don’t see through your ears. Or when you’re bored at home and keep opening the fridge waiting for better food to appear but you already opened it 3 times and there’s still the same amount of food as before.

The point is everyone is the same. We do the same embarrassing things, have the same habits and have been put in the same scenarios at some point no matter who you are or where you are from. Even though we should embrace the individualities of each other, everyone has the same habits and do the same things. Everyone is an outcast in their own way.

FEATURING

Threenagers LITTLE PEOPLE, BIG ATTITUDES

When children turn three, a new sassiness and mischievous streak will emerge The terrible twos are over but now you have a threenager. Every day brings playfulness, cheeky grins, and moments of stubbornness The innocence of toddlerhood blends with a growing independence, creating a whirlwind of laughter, frustration, and endless love

T H R E E G O I N G O N T H I R T E E N

Here are some top tips for handling a threenager: Managing a "threenager" demands patience and constancy. Three-year-olds start to push boundaries and show independence, which can be difficult.Establish clear rules and firmly enforce consequences to control this. Giving them options makes them feel more in charge and lessens power disputes. Remain positive and emphasise good behaviour rather than only punishing poor behaviour. Routines give security and facilitate smoother transitions. Breathe deeply and realise that this is a common moment when frustration rises. As parents, encourage one another and don't be afraid to seek for support when required. Accept the mayhem and appreciate the happy and enlightening times. Though it's difficult to consider now, you'll miss this when they're older.

THE EVOLUTION ON CHILDRENS CLOTHING

Decades of design

The developments in children's fashion, practicality, and views towards childhood that have occurred in society are reflected in the evolution of children's clothing. Children were frequently dressed the sames an adults, just a smaller version in the 18th and early 19th centuries, wearing elaborate and constricting clothing. Girls were dressed in corseted dresses, and boys wore waistcoats and trousers. This began to shift mid 19th century as a result of evolving perspectives on childhood as a unique and valued stage of life. With looser fits and simpler designs that permitted play and mobility, children's clothing became a lot more functional. By the 20th century, easy-care fabrics and fashions that mimicked adult trends but were modified for durability and comfort were introduced, revolutionising children's fashion due to mass production in the emergence of casual wear. A shift in the late 20th and early 21st centuries has seen a further shift towards more gender neutral clothing as well as a huge focus on ethical and sustainable fashion today.

RUNNING AWAY

The Nike P-6000s have been rapidly growing over the past three years. Running away from tradition and taking style inspiration from the vintage Nike Pegasus 25 and 2006, this sneaker gives a versatile running aesthetic that has also become a trend as casual wear in the fashion industry, blending athleticism with everyday fashion. The 2024 colourways include a lot of metallic statements, and bold colours, as well as the staple black, white, and earth tones, with materials 'having leather and synthetic material breathable mesh' all tied together to create a blend of the 2000's and modern aesthetic. The P-6000s are trending on Instagram with over 11.1 thousand tags, as well as being featured in multiple 'Top 5 sneakers of the year in 2024' videos on TikTok

As well as the sneaker trending on social media, on the Nike website itself, members of the Nike community who order the sneaker post their style inspiration, allowing people to see exactly how others are wearing the shoe. You could be one of them! 'How others are wearing it' allows customers to see the versatility of the shoe, as well as giving them the opportunity to share their wardrobe and have a chance to be featured and tagged by Nike if you upload a photo.

Living in the city is thrilling, especially when it comes to dating. But it can also be extremely stressful. Cities are melting pots of cultures, backgrounds and personalities and while there are endless opportunities for social interaction in coffee shops, among the vibrant nightlife or on dating apps, urban dating comes with its own challenges.

Getting dating right can feel like an impossible task; is a sit down meal too serious? How long do I wait before I text? Or should I call? And the chaos of city living only

multiplies this pressure. With so many people in the dating pool, competition can be fierce, it's easy to feel overwhelmed by the sheer number of potential partners and the pressure to stand out. The C y

enrich your experience and broaden your horizons. Endless fun: Living in a city offers a huge variety of dates. Try to be open to new experiences and embrace the vibrancy of city life.

Swipe smart: Dating apps and social media are powerful tools for meeting people but it’s essential to use them wisely. Don’t share personal details online, look into a person’s online presence and never feel pressured to share anything or meet in person if you aren’t comfortable.

Clear signals: Communication is crucial in the fast paced world of city dating. Be upfront about your intentions. This transparency will help ensure both parties are on the same page.

Me time: Urban living is hectic and it’s essential to take time for self care. Prioritising relaxation and time to

recharge will allow you to have a balanced lifestyle. Keep it real: In a city full of possibilities, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement of new encounters, however, it's important to seek authentic connections Focus on building meaningful relationships with people who share your values and interests.

Dating in the city can be an exhilarating adventure. By embracing the excitement and navigating challenges with confidence and openness, you can make the most of your dating life. Whether you're looking for a casual fling or a serious relationship, the city's vibrant landscape offers endless possibilities for romance and connection. So, step out, explore, and let the city guide you to your next romantic adventure.

It would be an understatement to say that not much good has come out of the pandemic. But one small positive is undoubtedly the fact that numerous lockdowns have made many of us far more appreciative of green spaces. Although lockdowns are a distant memory, our newfound appreciation for nature endures; research shows 65% of people reported that spending time outdoors benefitted their mental health more during lockdown than ever before. For me, lockdown underscored the importance of nature and how crucial it is for my mental and physical wellbeing. During those government-allocated daily walks, I savoured the sight of towering trees and dancing flowers. But for some, finding green space can be challenging. Many people living in urban areas find their nature walks limited to a tour of grey pavements lined with buildings and, if they’re lucky, a rare sighting of a rogue dandelion.

Over half of the population currently lives in cities dominated by high rise buildings. Concrete jungles are great and all, but try hugging a skyscraper when you need comfort. Here, green spaces serve as essential sanctuaries. Whether it’s a sprawling park, a

community garden, or a rooftop greenhouse, these areas offer more than just a breath of fresh air. They play a crucial role in enhancing wellness, encouraging residents to engage in physical activity and enriching the aesthetic appeal of urban environments. And, the mental health benefits of green spaces are profound (and way cheaper than actual therapy). The tranquility and beauty of green spaces provides a mental escape from the chaos and noise of urban life, offering a peaceful refuge that promotes relaxation. But despite the myriad of reasons to preserve these pockets of nature, urban green space continues to decline. Crispin Truman, chief executive of CPRE, said: “The poorer you are and the more nature-deprived your neighbourhood already is, the less likely you are to have any protected local green space. It’s time to address this imbalance and level up everyone’s access to nature.”

And that lack of protection for urban green spaces hasn’t gone unnoticed by young

Also using Covid times to improve city living: Loyle Carner, a London-born hip hop artist “I’m just tryna make my city a little greener, my dad used to plant trees in the city and I’m just following in his footsteps,” he said Carter is an

advocate for many issues; he started a school for kids with ADHD, campaigned for mental health and suicide prevention, and in 2020, he became an ambassador for London National Park City Collaborating with Timberland to create “Nature Needs Heroes,” Carner was keen to inject some much-needed green into his city, linking green space to positive effects on wellbeing Fans nominated areas of London they felt needed love and, through the partnership, Carner shined a light on forgotten places that had fallen victim to the growth of the concrete jungle Carner returned to his old turf in South Croydon to help build a meditation garden “It’s important to show kids that you’ve got a space that you can go chill You can take some deep breaths and chill ” Thornton Heath, close to where Carner grew up, was another focus area for the initiative “I wanted there to be herbs, vegetables, and fruit so that people could maintain it, have a relationship with it, and understand that it’s a living space,” he explains

Green spaces are indispensable components of urban areas, offering a myriad of benefits that go beyond mere beauty They are vital for promoting physical and mental wellness, providing a serene escape from urban stresses and enhancing the visual and environmental quality of cities As urbanisation continues to rise, the importance of preserving and expanding these green oases cannot be overstated Investing in green spaces is an investment in the health, happiness and sustainability of urban communities
