Win or lose, Wells will benefit from City of Culture bid THE group behind Wells’ bid to become the UK’s City of Culture 2021 are determined to use it as a springboard to benefit the city - whether Wells wins the competition or not.

A shortlist of candidates was due to be announced by the Department of Culture, Media and Sport at the end of June, as Wells Voice was going to press, or in early July.

“It really matters whether Wells wins, not least because the funding that could be accessed would enable us to undertake projects of far greater size than without the status of City of Culture,” said the Wells bid’s project lead Andy Webb, of Wells Visitor Information Service.

“That said, we have had a lot of useful and inspiring conversations and if we do not get shortlisted, we will set out our plans for what we will try to make happen within our city and the surrounding area anyway.”

There are 10 other cities in the running to be City of Culture 2021, including Swansea, Hereford, Sunderland and Perth.

The Wells bid incorporates

Wells, Glastonbury, Street, Shepton Mallet and Frome, together with Cheddar, Castle Cary and Bruton.

“Uniquely, the Wells bid has been assembled through a process of dialogue with a range of individuals, organisations and businesses,” said Andy.

“It is not led by the local authority – rather it is a true community bid. Although the team that led the bid were predominantly from Wells, the team would be expanded to include our partner towns – and local authorities – if Wells was shortlisted.”

The team contacted more than 170 local artists and cultural organisations by email survey and phone, along with approximately 30 local charities, support groups, heritage organisations and civic and community groups and all 60 local schools.

Traders lose status as farmers' market WELLS has lost its farmers’ market – at least in name.

Somerset Farmers’ Markets has pulled out of the city’s Wednesday market in Wells Market Place.

The organisation said that its operation in Wells was running at a loss and was unsustainable.

Most of the food producers in Wells it represented are still turning up but now deal directly with Mendip District Council like the other market stallholders – and cannot call themselves a farmers’ market.

“I understand the financial side of it but I feel let down. We all do,” said Janet Wood of Mere Fish Farm, who has been trading at Wells for 16 years.

“I’ve always been proud to be a member of Somerset Farmers’ Markets and it’s disappointing that’s no longer the case at Wells.

I did like the identity of being Somerset Farmers’ Markets.”

The food and drink traders had suggested renaming their area Mendip Farmers’ Market at Wells but could not get agreement from the district council. The entire market is now known simply as Wells Market.

n NEWS Wells City Council news for June The Mayor The Mayor has attended some poignant events this month: leading the vigil at Wells Cathedral after the Manchester terrorist attack; working with civic leaders in the face of the atrocities; and attending the funeral of former Mayor of Wells, Councillor Chris Briton.

Shops join initiative to create art gallery with a difference WELLS city centre is to become one big art gallery with paintings displayed in dozens of shop windows.

The Half Mile Gallery is the brainchild of Wells artist Chris Lee who approached traders with the plan for a very public display of his work, and he says they have embraced the idea with enthusiasm.

“I've been painting in Wells ever since I moved here six years ago, and have exhibited the work in many galleries, including a big one-man show at The Bishop's Palace and regularly at the A2 Gallery, but this time I wanted to share my love of Wells with a much bigger audience - everyone walking up the High Street,” he said. “Most my drawings are of the architecture of this beautiful city. Who else gets a cathedral, a palace and a moat in the city centre?”

So far 25 businesses have agreed to display work in their windows during Somerset Art Weeks, from September 23 to October 8.

“More shops will join I'm sure, as the enthusiasm was overwhelming,” said Chris.

“We obviously have some very far-seeing and generous businesses in Wells, and thanks to them all.”

Most of the pictures to be displayed will be Chris’ distinctive ‘wobbly’ work, many being images of Wells itself.

“I've become well known for my wobbly line work, which I put down to a very precarious three-legged stool, but can also be attributed to me looking at my watch and checking if the pub is open.”

The show then runs down Sadler Street, into the Market Square and down the High Street where it meanders down Broad Street and Queen Street and on to Priest Row. “Every painting is for sale, and I think the show will open people's eyes to the beauty of our city. So many of the shops and pubs are architectural wonders in their own right, just look at The Crown,” said Chris.

Those that have already agreed to put pictures on display include Armandine Gallery, The Swan Hotel, Ensemble, Alexandra King, Liberty Café Bar, The Crown, Kitty Banks, Cadeaux & Co, Miles Morgan Travel, Waterstones, The Laundry, Santé Wines, Basil Powell Shoes, Thompson Carpets, Mercia Kitchens, Whiting & Son, Cinnamon Corner, Queen Street Deli, A2 Gallery and Lynnsey Kelly Flowers.

Wells Chamber of Commerce chairman Robert Powell said: “The chamber of commerce thinks this is a great idea, and it encourages the public to come into the city centre to participate in a living art gallery.”

There will be more work on display in Wells during Somerset Art Weeks in the Somerset Guild of Craftsmen and Heritage Courtyard galleries, as well as Frameus in Market Street.

Planning applications Applications before the city council planning committee for consideration have included a telecommunications mast on Strawberry Way and the signage at The Works shop in the High Street. Both of these have attracted a lot of attention from the public; councillors have been kept busy dealing with enquiries and listening to opinions from local residents. The final decisions now rest with Mendip District Council. Members of the public are always welcome to attend the local planning committee meetings at 7pm on the first and third Thursdays of each month (not August).

Wells in Bloom The Wells in Bloom team have been out around the city completing the annual ‘Big Plant Out’ to make our city look beautiful for the summer; many thanks to all the council staff and the volunteers who helped on the day. Competition judging will take place during July, so keep on with that weeding!

Toilets The city council has taken charge of the public toilets at the bus station, so you may notice some changes there; the roof is clean instead of green and the locking system is now working properly. Watch out for further improvements over the coming months.

Town Hall Lettings at the Town Hall are increasing all the time; the building is busy with classes and events of all kinds. This week sees the exams taking place for the Wells Dancing School; lots of nervous little ballerinas practising in the vestibule. Good luck everyone! u From the Town Hall, page 8

Two special people at heart of pair's charity fundraiser TWO Wells women are organising a special fundraising event at the end of July in aid of causes close to their hearts.

Rachel Rostron and Keisha Padfield are hoping to raise hundreds of pounds with a 12hour spinathon at Wells Leisure Centre.

Half of the money raised will go towards creating a garden at Southmead Hospital for patients and their families, and the other half towards a cancer charity.

Keisha’s father Daren, a much-loved coach at Wells Football Club, was knocked down by a car while walking along Strawberry Way in March last year.

He was cared for at Southmead Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit but died 12 days later.

“The care Dad received at Southmead was professional, compassionate and respectful

throughout,” said Keisha, a midwife.

“The money raised will help to create a garden for patients and family members. This garden will provide a sanctuary at times of greatest need.”

Cancer Research UK Kids & Teens is a charity that means a lot to Rachel after a Wells girl she taught to swim, Esme Deacon, was diagnosed with cancer.

Rachel – a firefighter, a personal trainer and a group exercise instructor, as well as a swimming coach – discovered that Esme had cancer after she stopped turning up for swimming sessions at the leisure centre.

“She's a lovely little girl and a super swimmer," said Rachel.

"All of a sudden she wasn't coming to lessons.

“At first her mum wasn't sure what was wrong.

appointments it was finally diagnosed.”

The diagnosis was acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Esme was just five. She is now nearly a year into a two-and-a-half-year treatment plan.

“The survival rates for childhood cancer are improving every day and this is largely down to the research and work of Cancer Research Kids & Teens,” said Rachel. “Thank you for any donation you can make.”

Keisha and Rachel are being joined for the fundraiser, on July 29, by colleagues from Wells Fire Station and people who attend Rachel’s exercise classes including Donna Hand, Kate Gumbleton, Oliver Coughlan, Leanne Tilling, Claire Bryne and Jade Allen.

The fundraising day will also feature a family barbecue from 5pm till late at Wells Rugby Club, with live music from Parfenon.

Chairman excited as festival gets set to celebrate 25th anniversary THE new chairman of one of the longest-running literature festivals in the country is very excited about its 25th anniversary which takes place this year - and Richard Manning says that plans for the celebration of the Wells Festival of Literature are well advanced.

The festival has grown from small beginnings 25 years ago, when two friends attended the Cheltenham Literary Festival, and decided to replicate it in England’s smallest city. It is now a thriving and financially secure annual event with an audience of around 5,000 and many generous sponsors. The

vision is unchanged - to continue to attract brilliant authors and to entertain and educate audiences in equal measure.

As the number of sponsors has increased, the Education Group has been able to support a wider range of schools with visits from famous authors and creative workshops throughout the year, and the largest ever number of primary school children will be enthralled by a well-known writer, under one roof. The children’s literacy charity Beanstalk has also benefited from support, helping it to launch in the South West and supplying volunteers who

work on a one-to-one basis with reluctant readers.

“When I became involved with the Wells Festival of Literature a few years ago, it was as someone who had attended many talks over the years, but with little idea of the scope and scale of the effort required to make it all work," said Richard.

"I am now under no illusions about just how much energy, enthusiasm and creativity so many people put into all aspects of the festival's activities, including its charitable endeavours to encourage reading and literacy in schools around Wells. The event is run by an entirely voluntary committee.”

The Festival of Literature will take place from October 13-21 in a marquee in the grounds ofThe Bishop's Palace. It will largely follow the format of previous years, with a mix of authors from across many different genres.

“It has been a huge learning experience for me in this my first year as chairman and I would like to thank all of our many volunteers who give up so much of their time to make the festival the success it is,” said Richard.

“We have a friendly and professional ethos and we all love books. I anticipate that we have a secure platform to do so over the next 25 years."

TRADERS made an emergency call after noticing a strong smell of gas in the High Street.

A Wales & West Utilities engineer sent to investigate discovered a leak in a gas pipe at the junction with Broad Street, and repair work was carried out.

Ray Besant, Wales & West Utilities operational manager for Somerset, said: “We were alerted to a smell of gas in the High Street area of Wells on June 2 and immediately sent an engineer.

"On arrival, the engineer found a small leak on a gas pipe under High Street and made a temporary repair.

“An engineering team then worked to make a full repair, finishing work and leaving the area on June 9.

“We know this work can be disruptive, but it was important that we repaired the leak as quickly and safely as possible to keep gas flowing to homes and businesses in the area.

“Wales & West Utilities, the gas emergency and pipeline service, brings energy to 7.5 million people across the south west of England and Wales.

"If anyone smells gas, thinks they have a gas leak or suspects carbon monoxide poisoning, they should call us on 0800 111 999 and our engineers will be there to help, day or night."

Two rescued after hair curlers start fire FIRE crews from Wells and Shepton Mallet were called out to a fire in Wells last week - caused by hair curlers.

Two people were rescued from the property in St Thomas Street.

Crews extinguished the fire in a bedroom using one hose reel jet, two breathing apparatus and one covering jet.

Re-elected MP spells out his priorities JAMES Heappey will press for more money for public services and improved digital connectivity after being re-elected as Conservative MP for Wells.

He fought off the challenge of Liberal Democrat Tess Munt to win with a majority of more than 7,500. Voter turnout was 73.8 per cent.

"It is a huge honour to be elected again as the Member of Parliament for Wells. Although the constituency extends well beyond the city, it is amazing to have such a vibrant community and so much history and heritage right at the heart of this fantastic constituency," he told Wells Voice.

"The work now continues to deliver the plans for our area that we were discussing on the doorstep over the last seven weeks. We are still too poorly connected – both digitally and by road and rail – and the formulas which allocate money from

for decades which means we need an industrial strategy for our county that focuses on the industries that will allow us to grow our economy and the prosperity of those who work here. An important part of that will be making sure we’ve got the right skills within our workforce.

"And finally, we need to make sure we get the right deal from Brexit for our community and for local businesses."

Ms Munt, who won the Wells seat in 2010 but was beaten by Mr Heappey at the previous general election in 2015, said: "When you look at the figures, as politicians do, we've done rather well. The Conservative majority has been reduced a little and bearing in mind that was a combination of UKIP and Conservatives, I think we should be celebrating."

She was elected a Somerset county councillor in May when she stood in Wells against

Somerset County Council leader John Osman, and has said she will stand again at the next general election.

She added: "I'm back on the doorstep listening and talking to people locally, and I'm amazed at the huge level of disappointment in both David Cameron, for calling a referendum and then walking away when he didn't get the result he wanted, and in Theresa May, for her poor judgement in calling an election purely for political advantage, with no consideration for the fact that elections do not always deliver the result politicians want.

"I'm continuing to work with my colleagues to make sure that we get the best possible deal for this part of rural Somerset."

Andy Merryfield polled more than 7,000 votes for Labour, while Lorna Corke of the Christian Peoples Alliance picked up 320.

Extraordinary year as city's first citizen This month, former Mayor of Wells, Councillor Alison Gibson, sums up her year WE have now said a fond farewell to our 643rd Mayor of Wells and it is safe to say that Councillor Alison Gibson has had an eventful, memorable and challenging year wearing the prestigious chains.

Starting off her mayoral year with the mayor making ceremony, a day which Alison says was her fondest highlight of the year, all of her friends and family were gathered together to honour her new role as the head of the city council and first citizen of Wells. As Mayor of Wells she attended countless civic events, chaired council meetings and was a part of the carnival parade.

Alison considers the most memorable event to have been Dancing on the Green "for the sheer spectacle of all the children

country dancing." She battled the elements and joined in with the dancing (fully robed) with the pupils of Stoberry Park School.

It would also seem that carol services were strong contenders for favourite moments for the mayor. Having attended various services over the year, two in particular stood out for her. The first was at Wells Cathedral with the WI, their anthem Jerusalem made her hairs stand on end with the accompaniment of the iconic organ. The second memorable service at Christmas was organised by St John Ambulance, a moment which gave her the opportunity to rock out to ‘All I want for Christmas is You’ by Mariah Carey.

Not only has it been a valuable and humbling experience for Alison, who was already a well known figure in Wells, but it has also opened her eyes to what Wells has to offer.

"Wells has so much, from

tourist attractions, various festivals to attend, a twice weekly market, many clubs and organisations to become a member of, to name just a few things," she said.

It’s not just the events and landmarks which have made Alison realise how special a place Wells is, it is also the people.

Wells is rich with volunteers who

give up their valuable time to maintain the city. From events such as the Moat Boat Race, to Wells in Bloom, Wells really does have a strong and valuable volunteer team.

Although it has only been a year, the mayor, which is a voluntary role in our city, manages to engage in a wide variety of activities and events as well as attend their normal council duties. Alison in particular enjoyed visiting the schools and seeing what the local pupils are up to as they always provide something unique and interesting to enjoy.

Wells is steeped in tradition and history, and the mayor is part of that, so it is important to keep that going and highlight the importance of maintaining that role.

Alison said: "I am just an ordinary girl who has done something extraordinary for a year."

Big turnout for classic motorbike run THE Wells Classic Motorcycle Club’s Tortoise and Hare run attracted more than 120 classic motorcyclists from across the South and West.

Riders brought café racers and cruisers, Vincents and Velocettes, Scotts and Suzukis along for the ride.

Machines made before the First World War lined up alongside fire-breathing modern classics in the Market Place before being waved off by Wells Town Crier Len Sweales and Mayor John North and thundering out of Wells into the Mendip Hills.

The run took larger and more modern bikes, the ‘Hares’, on the longest route, past Priddy Mineries and on to Wrington, before they headed back to their first stop and Shipham Village Hall.

Businesses get vote of approval to earn top five placing in awards

Charities to make pitch for share of funds ALREADY 24 charities have been helped by Wells SOUP. Now it is the turn of another four.

This event follows a similar but much gentler pattern to TV’s Dragons’ Den with charities the beneficiaries rather than entrepreneurs.

Four charities will each make four-minute presentations without technology at Seager Hall in Union Street, Wells, on Saturday, July 8, from 1pm-2pm.

Best to arrive at 12.45pm to be sure of a good seat.

The audience enjoys a light lunch, asks questions of the charities then votes on how the prize fund is distributed between them.

All are welcome to come along and enjoy the delicious soup provided by Sadlers Brasserie of the White Hart Hotel in Sadler Street.

“We are delighted to support such a brilliant community initiative as Wells SOUP,” said hotel owner Tudor Hopkins.

“We have supported 24 charities so far,” said Ross Young

The run, which was sponsored by a multitude of local businesses big and small, raised money for Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance.

'To share in the journey of these young people has been an honour' As Steve Jackson prepares to retire at the end of the summer term after 28 years at the Blue School, the past 18 as headteacher, he reflects on his time at the school and looks ahead to what he will do in the future How are you feeling as your last day at the Blue approaches?

Since submitting my resignation in December it's been a proverbial emotional rollercoaster. Please don't tell anyone but I've already started breaking down in tears. Can't imagine what it will actually feel like at the end of term but I know I'm not looking forward to it.

How would you say that the school has changed over the past 28 years?

The most significant changes have undoubtedly been higher standards, increased professionalism and greater accountability. Those working in schools have responded brilliantly to these challenges and I'm so privileged to witness what they do day in and day out for the benefit of young people. Teaching has genuinely

been transformed and I really hope that the current climate of devastating financial cuts will not undo the great improvements that have been made over recent years.

What have been the highlights during your time at the school?

This is an easy one. For 28 years the highlights have been the new Y7 students who join us each September together with the Y11 and Y13 young women and men who leave having completed their time at The Blue. To share in the journey of these young people as they grow and flourish, moving through the school, has been an honour. There have been so many occasions when I have been deeply moved by their contributions and achievements.

So many lovely young people - the future is indeed in good hands.

Have there been any embarrassing moments that you can share?

Hundreds - but sadly none I can share! Well, if you insist, perhaps the time I walked into a packed St Cuthbert's Church at 7.30pm to give the introductory reading at our Carol Service to discover it had started punctually at 7pm.

Steve Jackson has been the Blue School's headteacher for 18 years If you could give your successor, Mark Woodlock, one piece of advice, what would it be?

Mark's already an experienced headteacher so I wouldn't presume to offer him any advice.

I think he's going to be much better than the guy who had the job before him.

Have you got any plans for life after The Blue?

I've spent the last 32 years in senior leadership diligently advising colleagues who are approaching retirement to attend seminars and plan carefully for this major step in their lives. So the answer to this question is no, I've ignored all my own advice, not been on any retirement courses, not made any plans and therefore have no idea what happens after The Blue! More seriously, I'm looking forward to spending more time with Christine, my much better half, who is also retiring. I'm also going to devote time and energy to beating Type 2 Diabetes.

Are you looking forward to spending more time out and

about in Wells?

Yes, very much so. We were so fortunate that work led us here to Wells and we couldn't have wished for a better place to bring up our family.

What are the best aspects of living in the city?

There's so much! We can walk to great restaurants and love the market and the coffee shops.

Wells netball and football clubs have given our children years of fun and friendship. The independent shops on the High Street are a real privilege and our view of the cathedral lit up by the sun in the evening is uplifting.

By far the best thing about Wells, however, is the lovely (and very patient and tolerant) people we have come to know and are so fortunate to be able to call our friends.

What has a career as a teacher taught you?

I have learned the central importance of an immutable faith in the improvability of the human condition. Nothing but the best, for all students, at all times.

Path repairs designed to combat floods WORK has been taking place to repair a footpath in Wells that was damaged by torrential rain late last year.

The joint footpath and permissive cyclepath, which runs along the back of Bekynton Avenue in Wells, was damaged by floodwater during one of last winter’s storms.

As well as reinstating the footpath, the council has cleared a ditch which runs alongside the path, removing rubbish, weeds and overgrown bushes and shrubs.

By clearing the ditch it is hoped that, should such severe weather hit again, it will help divert water away from the immediate local area.

Work began on June 12 and was due to last for three weeks.

The path has remained open throughout.

We are also taking the opportunity to clear a nearby ditch, which we hope will reduce the risk of flooding in this area.”

The path has been damaged by floodwater several times over the years, with residents complaining that previous repairs have not been effective enough. But the district council says that the current repair work should prove more permanent.

A spokesman said: “We are

reinstating the footpath with materials that should be more resistant to heavy rain. We are hopeful that this work, coupled with clearing the ditch to improve capacity for floodwater, will help reduce the risk of further damage to the footpath in the event of future storms.”

Plants for sale at the English Country Garden Festival, and a performance by Cam Valley Morris Men

Thousands enjoy talks, tours and music in great outdoors Men on Sunday, and a stunning performance from The Longest Johns on Sunday afternoon.

There was also a demonstration by Georgie Newbery from Common Farm Flowers, who wowed the crowd with her wealth of knowledge on growing and arranging flowers.

The visiting garden experts all commended head gardener James Cross on the skilful development and presentation of the 14 acres of RHS Partner Gardens, with the Phelps Rose Garden taking particular praise.

Stihl Power Tools, Griffin Glasshouses, Pilgrim Finance and Chalmers HB. The Palace plans to continue this event for a fourth year next June and is currently in discussions with a range of celebrity gardeners about next year’s appearances.

THE third English Country Garden Festival attracted more than 4,000 visitors to The Bishop's Palace.

The festival, which took place from June 9-11, was opened by celebrity gardener Matthew Biggs.

He praised the quality of the gardens, on what was his first visit to the site. His talk, Lessons From Great Gardeners, was packed out and very well received.

Visitors were treated to expert garden tours throughout the festival by the experienced team of gardeners from the Palace, and an array of 45 stalls with nursery plants, garden tools and gadgets, gifts and food.

Other celebrity gardener talks were given by Anne Swithinbank, Tamsin Westthorpe, Alan Power, Jane Moore and Cleve West.

Project aims to bring barn back to heart of community life in 130th anniversary year JUNE marked the start of the 130th anniversary of the Wells Recreation Grounds and The Bishop's Barn – the magnificent 15th century barn right in the heart of Wells – being given to the city.

The Bishop's Barn, which is nestled within the Recreation Grounds, was given to the city

by Bishop Lord Arthur Hervey in two parts, in 1887 and 1897, as a place for recreation and amusement.

It has a varied history: from a medieval tithe barn storing grain in the 15th century to a 1970s venue for iconic bands such as Status Quo, Supertramp and Slade - housing audiences of up to 1,500; from a site for the quartering of Royalist troops during the Bloody Assizes to a roller skating skating venue in 1910; from an overspill

Now, some 600 years after it was first built, plans are underway to bring The Bishop’s Barn back to the heart of community life in Wells.

Project development manager Louise Lappin-Cook said: “The 130th anniversary of the barn being given to the people of Wells marks a unique opportunity to push plans for developing the space forward. Wells Recreation Ground Trustees are committed to improving the barn and making the most of this magical and versatile community space.

We are currently in discussions with Heritage Lottery Fund about restoring the barn as well as other funders to explore making improvements to the Recreation Ground site.

"We are delighted to have the support of Historic England, Mendip District Council and Somerset Buildings Preservation Trust in progressing this project.

The barn and grounds are of great significance to the local community and it is vital that

this space is preserved for generations to come. We are currently exploring means of developing the barn to ensure it provides a versatile community space for exhibitions, performances, workshops and community activity."

The barn was the starting ground for Gordon Poole’s entertainment and speaker agency – as a teenager at Wells Cathedral School he programmed many acts in the barn. Gordon recalled: “All the kit and the bands were on farm trailers which we wheeled in. We ran events every Saturday and most of the groups playing has No1 records.”

Despite its rich cultural history, in recent years the barn has been used less and is in urgent need of repairs and modernisation to bring it back to full use. As part of the consultation process residents are being invited to offer feedback on the use of the site and programme of activities.

Feelgood art show WELLS Town Hall was the venue for tiny treasures of the art world in June. Visitors to the Hilliard Society of Miniature Art's annual exhibition were given magnifying glasses to allow them to appreciate the astonishing detail in the pictures.

"People were very enthusiastic, there was a really good feelgood factor," said Ros Pearson, co-founder of the society and one of the exhibitors.

"It's an exceptional exhibition to have outside London and we're lucky to have it in Wells."

Next year's exhibition will take place from June 2-9.

ROD Major, who runs Wells Funeral Services, is bringing a modern approach to the funeral sector.

Forging stronger links with colleagues in the area is just one example of this fresh approach, as is a new-look website (www. wellsfuneralservices.co.uk).

"The role of modern-day funeral service providers is becoming much more complex and subtle - the days of a local builder or carpenter doubling up as a funeral director are becoming rare," said Rod, a familiar sight on his stall at the Wednesday market in Wells.

As well as offering funeral plans, bespoke funeral services and affordable packages, Wells Funeral Services can liaise with will writers and probate experts.

Rod can also call upon the services of Nicola Sutton, a fully qualified civil celebrant.

Wells Funeral Services has responded to the growing interest in green burials by working with Musgrove Willows at Westonzoyland, who offer handwoven coffins made from Somerset withies. Family members can help weave a coffin for a loved one if they wish.

Rod said: "For some people that can play an important part in the grieving process. I've know family members who've shared memories of a loved one whilst helping to make the coffin."

Bloom challenge THERE is still time to enter this year's Wells in Bloom competition. Entry forms are available at several places in Wells including the town hall.

There are nine categories for residents and businesses to enter, with judging taking place on July 17, 18 and 19.

The winners will be announced at a presentation evening in the town hall on September 27.

Friendly gathering of folk and dance fans THE Priddy Folk festival is a little gem on the doorstep: a packed three days of international-class folk music and dance which all takes place in the picturesque setting of Priddy’s village green.

Renowned nationally for its friendly atmosphere, with plenty to do for adults and children alike, it has a loyal following and people coming from all over the South West and further afield to soak up the ambiance.

The festival started as a local PTA fundraiser in the early 1990s, and is now in its 26th year. Although the quality of the acts has risen dramatically in that time, it retains its community feel. For example, one of the most popular food stalls is still the local PTA nosh tent selling home made breakfasts, dinners, cakes and lunches.

All the money raised from the festival goes to local good causes, including supporting young musicians to learn and hone their craft.

This year, the festival features

an array of talent from all over Britain and beyond. Acts that will be performing at the festival include Irish folk stars Flook, Welsh band Jamie Smith’s Mabon, and from Scotland prodigious young award-winning trio Talisk and the all-women supergroup The Shee.

From England there is the fast-rising band Mawkin, BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards nominee Jim Causley and the all-star trio Faustus.

For those with more global tastes there’s the Balkan/gypsy mash-up of Briston-based Ushti Baba, the sounds of Brittany from Topette!! And the infectious Americana of Medicine Creek.

As ever there will be plenty of dance to enjoy, including appearances by the National Youth Folklore Troupe of England, a late-night ceilidh, a fringe featuring the best of local acts and a full programme of children’s events.

There’s also great food, a craft fair and a festival bar.

Art, music and magic realism IT is not long until Wedmore Arts Festival which promises an exciting mix of events, including a ground-breaking poetry-play written by awardwining poet, Sarah James. The Magnetic Diaries features a modern Madame Bovary in a contemporary English setting, and will be performed at Wedmore on Thursday, July 13.

Music-lovers are also in for a treat. Brunel Sinfonia will be featuring two extremely young and talented string players with their 30-piece orchestra – a ‘big and beautiful’ sound; Wedmore’s favourite pianist, Richard Lennox, and organist James Kealey, Senior Organ Scholar at Wells Cathedral, will both be performing lunchtime concerts in St Mary’s Church.

n AROUND THE SOCIETIES WELLS & MENDIP ASTRONOMERS IN the UK we are generally unaware that our space industry is one of the fastest growing sectors of the economy (8.8% annual growth since 2000). It supports directly or indirectly 100,000 jobs and is now worth almost £12 billion per year to the economy.

This is set to treble by 2030, provided the right investment is made and that we have a qualified workforce to drive it.

Beyond this, the exploration of space is the greatest human adventure of our time, and may one day ensure our survival and that of our planet.

It is against this background that the Wells & Mendip Astronomers collaborates with international bodies like the British Interplanetary Society (BIS) – the world’s oldest space advocacy organisation – to raise public awareness of the space industry and to inspire both young and old. In this context, the Wells & Mendip Museum has been privileged this June to host ‘Visions of Space 2’, a breathtaking exhibition of art works by the UK’s and USA’s top members of the International Association of Astronomical Artists (IAAA), including Britain’s David A. Hardy. Many of the artists were also wellknown writers, scientists and engineers, and there were even three astronauts, including Apollo 12 Moonwalker and Skylab Commander Alan Bean.

During a distinguished career of over 60 years, David A. Hardy’s work has been featured in many astronomy publications, as well as in hundreds of science fiction books and magazines. He is one of only a few artists to have an asteroid named after him.

The exhibition also included a history of space exploration illustrated with spacecraft models by Mat Irvine, TV and film special effects wizard, designer and producer.

Following its opening with illustrated talks by Hardy and Irvine, and two live Skype-ups with IAAA artists and astronauts at Spacefest 8 in Arizona, the show attracted visitors from far and wide, and was also taken out to local school children by Joanne Richardson’s Space Detectives and IAAA artist Jackie Burns. The Mayor of Kluczbork, Jaroslaw Keilar, and the committee of Wells Twinning Association says, "motivate them to believe that they, too, can take an active part in the explorations and adventures of their lifetimes". He and other astronaut artists, like cosmonaut Alexei Leonov, are the first, but certainly won’t be the last.

WELLS TWINNING ASSOCIATION SINCE the AGM five members of the Committee of Wells Twinning Association have visited our Friendship Town of Kluczbork in Poland from May 7-10. This was a reciprocal visit following a Kluczbork delegation visiting Wells in October 2016.

The Kluczbork Mayor and Council organised a varied programme for us. We visited sports facilities, which were exceptional and available for all citizens of Kluczbork. The Mayor received us at the Town Hall where he gave a presentation of the current facilities and plans to develop Kluczbork. Following

the presentation we were given a tour of the Town Hall.

A short walk led us to the museum, to receive a fascinating presentation on the history of bee keeping and honey production, including a collection of beehives from the past 200 years. After lunch the party went to the apiary. The people from Kluczbork are passionate and very proud of their local honey, and we tasted many varieties.

The following day we visited the Potable Water Treatment Plant followed by the town's Waste Water Plant. Our hosts then took us to a day centre for the elderly and disabled, all those attending were being helped with various tasks to enable them to either live on their own or work in the community.

Physiotherapy was also available.

The whole party was very impressed with the facilities, and particularly the staff at the day centre.

The next item on the programme was lunch at a kindergarten and tour of the school. Children arrive from 6am in the morning! Children with special educational needs

were integrated in to the school and had all necessary equipment for their needs which included a brilliant multi sensory room.

Our last visit was to a music school where we were given a tour and a concert, which was exceptional. Finally we had a farewell meal on Tuesday evening with the Mayor of Kluczbork and members of his council and council officers.

Wells Twinning Association could not have had better hosts, and we look forward to developing the friendship between Kluczbork and Wells.

Friday, June 16, saw the twinning association hosting our friends from our twin town of Bad Durkheim albeit for one day.

The highlight of the day was a barbecue at the rugby club in the evening.

The Italian Festival, Romulus and Remus, will be held on July 2 at Beech Barrow, Penn Hill, Wells, from noon – tickets £12.50 with concessions for children. Please do come and join us for a fantastic afternoon and evening of eating, singing and dancing. Tickets from Tony D’Ovidio (07770 994652) and Tony Guidi (07976 511680).

Finally, a visit to Paray Le Monial has been arranged and will take place from August 22-28.

Welcome awaits for players of all ages CITY of Wells Bowls Club is situated in Wells Recreation Ground between the Bishop's Barn, the bandstand and the new children's play area.

We have two Men's League teams, one in Somerset County League Premier 2 playing on a Saturday afternoon. The other team play in the Mid Somerset League on a Wednesday evening. The Ladies play in the Wild League on a Tuesday and Thursday afternoon. We play many friendly games Mixed, Ladies and Men's mainly on a Sunday afternoon but also some on week days. The season is mid-April to mid-September.

Our club nights are on Monday evenings from 6pm.

New members are always welcome. You never know, you might get hooked on the sport.

WELLS AMNESTY GROUP THE Wells Amnesty Group relaunch took place at Wells Museum on Wednesday, June 21. The event coincided with Refugee Week, and the plight of those fleeing persecution or war was the focus of the evening.

A stunning array of photos depicting the plight of refugees was displayed in the lecture hall.

Originally shown in London last year, the Magnum ‘I Welcome’ exhibition includes the work of many photographers who have captured the experiences of refugees from all over the world over several decades.

The exhibition was the

backdrop to a talk by Lisa Incledon, the secretary of the Volunteer Committee for Amnesty Children’s Human Rights Network. Lisa described the various campaigns that the network was involved with, including the call to change the law to allow child refugees in the UK to be reunited with their families.

Roughly 30 people – and potential new members for the Wells group – attended the event and were invited to sign a petition calling on the government to ensure that children are allowed to access their right to register as British citizens.

n SPORT Harrier Luke wins U20 title LUKE Prior of Wells City Harriers is elebrating after winning the Southern Counties U20 5000m title at Crystal Palace in a new PB of 15.14.

Luke finished well clear of the chasing pack in these prestigious championships. Meanwhile a large contingent of Harriers ran well at the recent Yeovilton 5k road race, with Philip Bridge first Harrier home in third place with 15.44.

Also finishing third was Chris Green at the tough little Beacon Batch fell race on the Mendips.
